Sigma random thread!

Talk about anything here! New job? Cute new puppy? Annoying new roomates? Anything (as long as it follows the forum rules)!

They're opening a Forever 21 in my area this winter. I'm ready to do some serious damage to my bank account!

sailboatgirl 08-16-2005 12:08 PM

Okay, I'll bite!

First of all...what is "Forever 21" ? Or, am I just showing how un-hip I am?

My exciting random news is that I have lost 22 pounds and counting on Weight Watchers! I've already dropped 2 pant sizes, and I have 14 more pounds to go to be skinnier that I've been since college! But skinny in a HEALTHY way! Sooo excited!

In other random news: I had a fabulous birthday this weekend...I'm officially in my 30s now (31) rather than "just 30"! I had a lot of fun! It's kind of nice to know how much your friends care about you, and my brithday festivities reminded me of that!

(edited to fix spelling/grammar)

It's okay- Forever 21

KSUViolet06 08-17-2005 12:45 AM

Alpha Beta chapter is MOVING! I'll keep you guys posted on the location as soon as we get situated. :)

ShyViolet 08-17-2005 01:37 AM

I finished my MLitt last a week ago, but feel completely unaccomplished. I'm sure I'm meant to feel like I've achieved something with my 68-page dissertation, but I don't. Maybe it's not sunk in yet?
I also fancy the new guy in my building (although we all know how well it always works out when I fancy a guy), so hopefully fate deals me a good hand on this one. I'm still cynical after my last experience. C'est la vie.

I've realised that my life is scarily similar to Megan Crane's novel "English as a Second Language". Scary how life imitates art.

Sigma Love and Mine,
Laura

KSUViolet06 08-17-2005 10:05 AM

Congrats, ShyViolet on your Masters Degree! An M-Lit is the type of masters I want to get eventually. I'm looking at combined MA Literature/Writing programs at Ohio State and good ol' Kent.

More randoms- My chapter is having its first social of the year in Sept. It's a handcuff social with Alpha Tau Omega. You basically get handcuffed to an ATO for the night and we have fun little events with prizes for the handcuffed couples. The favors? Plastic handcuffs of course
:D

jadis96 08-17-2005 04:49 PM

I have a tendancy to get smacked in the face by people wh are my "friends" but then I forgive them over and over again. I can't seem to let them go from my life even when they keep screwing me over. For example, I told a "friend" I liked someone, she just broke up with her boyfriend and I found out that she has a thing for the same guy I do through another friend.

why me? grrrrrrrrrrr

ilovetheviolets 08-17-2005 10:24 PM

enough pity party...
i absolutely love my job!! i seriously do!! i think everyone should have it!!
i live with the love of my life in a great apartment here in NJ, and am about 5 minutes away from my sigma little sister, so after a year apart we are back together as eachother's shoulder to lean on.
i am on the road to getting a promotion sometime in the near future.
and i also love forever21, though do not know where the closest one to me is.

p.s...ihearttrisigma, i totally miss KOP!! though the jersey mall near me is o.k...nothing will ever beat driving down rt.30 to the penn. turnpike and being at the greatest mall in the northeast!!

p.p.s...we are all sigmas, so therefor totally lucky!

sailboatgirl 08-18-2005 05:29 PM

No wonder I didn't know about Forever 21...clearly there is not one anywhere too close to Tulsa, Oklahoma!

In other random news, I was just downtown for a presentation and ran into one of my pledge sisters walking down the street. Very excited to see her! Plus, she said I looked good and then "the exact same as you did in college". God, bless her!

EPTriSigma 08-19-2005 03:42 AM

I am leaving on my very first business trip on Sunday morning! Boston for four days then back to Minnesota. From the conference calls I have been on the past week, I know there will be atleast one other Sigma on the trip as well.

ejbiff 08-19-2005 05:27 PM

I just got my teacher certification and subject area tests results back. I passed all three tests!! I am so excited! I will now be a certified elementary teacher when I graduate in April- woo hoo! I will also be able to teach math and science up to 8th grade, since I passed my subject area tests!:D

KSUViolet06 08-26-2005 09:27 PM

* I will officially graduate on December 16, 2006. :D

*I've decided to apply to grad school @ Cleveland State, Murray State, University of Kentucky, Kent State, and Ohio University. My top 2 are Cleveland and Murray so here's hoping. :)

*I have a HORRIBLE crush on an RA that's on my sister's staff. ;)

ejbiff 08-26-2005 11:15 PM

I am going through the disassociation ceremony on Sunday, making me an official Gamma Rho Chi (recruitment counselor). This will be my 2nd year being a Rho Chi and I am looking forward to it. I had a blast last year and am sure I will this time too.

I am actually looking forward to school starting on the 7th. It is my last semester before student teaching!!

We had our Sigma Rho Chi ceremony last Monday. It was bittersweet since we're losing 3 of our sisters, but we know they'll make awesome counselors and help lots of girls find a home in the KSU Greek system.:)

Omg Forever 21 is to die for. I go to the one at Galleria Mall in Buffalo all the time. After Forever 21, Wet Seal and Charlotte Russe I have no bank account left. lol

Speaking of puppies too, I have a precious little 6 month old Chinese Pug/Toy Poodle mix. I am in love with miniature puppy dogs. She is my little baby. I love her to death.

I have a broken foot from a car accident. I really miss work! I might get to go back on the 15th though :) I still waitress in the Casino/Horse Racing Track and I think it's the best job in the whole wide world.

I miss Sigma so so so so much. I find out the other day, I might not get to go to Cal State East Bay. A bunch of drama with transfer credits and I absolutely refuse to start over. University of Louisiana at Lafayette may be the lucky school to get me. It's my next top choice. I'm crossing my fingers to go in January. I can't wait to affiliate with another chapter, but I will miss Alpha Beta to death. Who am I kidding? I already miss Alpha Beta to death. At least I got the wonderful ladies from the RIT chapter to go visit:D I love them bein just a hop, skip and jump away and I can't wait to go meet all of them!

I'm moving into a new apartment with my best friend and I am super super excited.

Ok, so a ton of people know that I absolutely love going to watch Harness Racing. I won $434 on the Trifecta the other night. Woohoo!

I think thats all my pointless rambling for now. :D

ShyViolet 09-10-2005 11:02 AM

More pointless rambling from across the pond. ;) So 2 weeks ago, I dropped a teeny frozen pizza on my toe and broke it. I know, it takes a special kind of talent to pull that off, haha.

I've been good and have been buddy-taping my toe and had not danced until this last Thursday (the doctor said the bone would start to knit by then) when I found out that I'm dancing in the All-Scotland Irish Dance Championships (in mid-October). I'm excited, as it should be good fun and I know I'm a not-too-bad dancer, but nervewracking as it's my first competition over here and I've got to really get cracking fine-tuning my dances... But I have a broken toe. I have the option of dropping down a level to do graded intermediate competitions, rather than the open championship, but I really don't want to...

Other randomness, the new students have started arriving here, woohoo, out with the tourists and in with the freshers! And the new postgrads in my building will arrive on the 17th, which is exciting as I'm on the hall committee and get to help plan the events for freshers' week.

Sigma Love and Mine,
Laura

ihearttrisigma 09-13-2005 08:50 PM

...that our board isn't as active as it used to be!

...eventhough I graduated almost a year and a half ago I still miss college

...that boys that you like end up getting girlfriends, and those that like you are jerks

..that I quote Will Farrell movies like its my job

..Jake Gyllenhall needs to not date Kirsten Dunst and date me

..I'm obsessed with Addicting website

and Laura, I hope your toe is feeling better!!! :D

ShyViolet 09-15-2005 07:15 AM

Awww, thank you! :)

sailboatgirl 10-26-2005 01:56 PM

Just thought I'd bump this up, even though I don't really have TOO much new to share!

I have lost another 2.6 lbs, and am 3.8 lbs. away from my weight loss goal! (I'm doing weight watchers).

Also, I'm seeing a new boy! Well, I guess since we're both in our 30s, that would be a new man. For the first time in a LONG time, I really am letting myself like someone! I'm so excited about him, but I'm still freaked out all at the same time.

ejbiff 10-26-2005 08:48 PM

Congratulations to both, sailboatgirl! I'm sure you'll make it to your goal soon.

:D

KSUViolet06 08-08-2006 08:26 PM

bumping!

sigma3 08-09-2006 07:19 PM

Jocelyn~ Where did you end up getting into Grad School at and what for?

I saw you had Murray on your list of top 2. Yay for the Alpha Chi chapter.

Well, funny you should ask this, because there's been a slight change of plans! When I first posted in this thread, I was really looking to MA- English programs. After thinking about it for a long time, I realized that wasn't what I wanted to do!

I've since looked into MA- Rehab Counseling programs, and am looking into Kent (where I go now), Penn State and Wright State (PSU does have a Sigma chapter so that would be cool).

I graduate in December, so right now I'm requesting application materials and lining up recommendations! Wish me luck :)

I'm putting in a vote for PSU! Although I am not an alum I am from PA and know a bazillion people who are Penn State proud. It would be great to have you there. There are so many Sigma chapters you could take roadtrips to visit! [hint, call me if you do!] I was up there for State Day last year and the girls at PSU are wonderful..[as are all our sisters everywhere;) ]

Definately keep us all updated on how everything goes!

New random news.... Today was my first day with students this year!!!

sailboatgirl 08-10-2006 10:17 AM

Hmmm...no really exciting news from me, but I thought I'd post just for the heck of it! It is WAY too HOT here in OKlahoma to do anything...it's supposed to be over 100 today...again...

I'm so ready for cooler weather!

Edited to Add: It's 107 degrees outside. No wonder I am zapped of the will to do anything! This heat has got to stop!

ShyViolet 08-12-2006 05:17 AM

Ooh, good luck with the applications and stuff Jocelyn!

And I feel for you sailboatgirl, I was in Venice in late July and though I don't know how hot it actually was (apart from one day when it was 34C at about 7:00pm in the shade), it drained me of all my energy. Best of luck staying cool!

-- I'm in the process of moving flat and spent much of yesterday afternoon playing the address-change game. Who knew it could take so long try to think of everyone/every organisation which has my address. Super exciting. But on a positive note, the flat move is going well, it's a cute little flat in a central location (though more expensive than I was hoping - but St Andrews rent can be comparable to London so I'll stop my whinging) and my lease overlaps with where I'm living now, so I don't have to move everything in one go.

-- As I mentioned in the resolutions thread, I'm in a period of academic burnout, which I think is quite common at the beginning of the second year of the PhD. After coming back from Venice with 96 pages of notes covering roughly 40 books from 1550 onwards, my brain is mush. Also, I can't find any information about several paintings I'm looking at (which I suppose is a godsend as that means no one has done my topic - but is frustrating nevertheless), and have resorted to citing old guide books as that's been the only place I've ever found reference to them.

-- I looooove Venice! Though this does not include the heat, pigeons, mosquitos and tourists (who would stand in the middle of the Rialto bridge whilst I was trying to hurry to the Marciana library to claim a seat by the one and only fan in the Rare Books/Manuscripts reading room). ;) There's just something so captivating about the canals and the architecture. If anyone wants to see pictures (I went a little snap-happy, hehe), let me know and I will post some. :)

jadis96 08-13-2006 12:01 AM

Not too exciting, but tonight was my 10 year high school reunion and I saw a guy who I have only talked to online there and he hugged me!! I think I have a new crush :)

KSUViolet06 09-30-2006 12:51 PM

*I just went to MAC and bought a ton of new stuff.

*I don't remember needing to fill out so much crap when applying to undergrad. Grad schools make you write a book!

*I'm loving living in the house, even as a senior, it's so fun. It's gotten me way closer to alot of the younger chapter members.

*Holy crap! My chapter now has 17 new members!

*I want a baby blue Honda Civic.

The end!

^Lol, so true! I'm in the middle of renewing my student visa and the amount of paperwork required is unbelievable (had to have my mum even send over my bank statements). Good luck with all the applications! When are they due?

And yay for 17 new sisters!!! :D Super exciting stuff.

Cheers,
Laura

ps - My teaching schedule this year is pretty hardcore, four groups, all on a Tuesday. Whew - at least there's a break between the morning two and afternoon two.

ms_gwyn 10-05-2006 06:36 PM

I am an admitted geek...

but I have discovered that some of the company that I keep has made me even more of a geek. I went out this weekend and bought a PS2 and Guitar Hero....oh my...into the depths I tell you...

sailboatgirl 10-06-2006 03:43 PM

Here's my random sharing for the day...

It's October and 90 degrees outside...why?!?!?! I don't want to be at work today...it's too sunny to be indoors!

I'm having dinner and hanging out with my lil sis and her daughter tonight and am so excited! I haven't spent enough quality time with her lately and have missed her! I've been too busy with work, and she's too busy with work, husband, daughter, and being pregnant!

Okay...enough for now...I'll go see if my executive director is off the phone now to do a media interview for me!

sailboatgirl 10-10-2006 02:38 PM

okay, so just 3 days later...it is now cold and rainy in Oklahoma...I wish the sky would make up its mind! The rain/humidity is making my naturally curly hair even more curly and poofy! Yeah! Fun times, fun times...

(Can you tell that I'm avoiding getting any work done, or what?):p

ShyViolet 10-17-2006 12:23 PM

So after a loooong day of teaching (4 sections in one day kills my voice - but the topic was really good today: Jan van Eyck's style, technique and iconography... I digress). In a period of procrastination (aka. long lunch break), I joined the big facebook Sigma Sigma Sigma group and found that there's a Sigma JSA at my uni!!!

Even though I don't know her - you have no idea how happy this makes me. :D I really like the idea that wherever you go, you can find sisters.

On a slightly less fun note - I can't see 10 feet out my office window it's so foggy. Such is life in Scotland, though, and I should just be thankful it's not a downpour (touch wood).

Cheers,
Laura

KSUViolet06 02-14-2007 04:15 PM

*As of December 15th, I'm now an alumna. Yep, I graduated! I'm now working at a great company and am a member of my local alumna chapter!

*I just bought a NEW car (2007 Corolla)!

*I got into my grad program!

*I'm loving life right now :)

lovethedove 03-07-2007 11:57 AM

Last night at school, I saw a sign for Sigma Sigma Sigma. Apparently they're hosting a car blessing before students leave for spring break. I just thought it was really sweet. I've seen and met a few and they all seem like a great group of classy ladies. I guess we (Sig Kaps) have even more in common as far that goes ;)

jadis96 03-08-2007 12:26 AM

Okay I know this truly is totally random..... but I have had a thing for this guy for about a year and we went out last sunday! (Okay so it was as friends more then anything, but still a major coup!)

Thanks fior sharing that! What school do you go to?

lovethedove 03-08-2007 11:19 AM

I go to St. Mary's University in Texas

sailboatgirl 03-08-2007 02:07 PM

What in the world is a "car blessing" ?!?!?
