sILMil20 rush story
So recruitment '05 starts on Monday at Sam Houston State University in texas. I am soooooooo excited, and a bit nervous. i can't wait. I know I am going to have the time of my life and hopefully find sisters for a lifetime. There are four NPC sororities at my school.
Alpha Chi Omega Sigma Sigma Sigma Alpha Delta Pi Zeta Tau Alpha Currently I like all of them and one just a little more, but not much more. I am just excited to get to know more about all of them. I am a little nervous. I am a minority and a junior so I guess that puts me at a slight disadvantage. However, I am prepared to be myself and hopefully find a place i fit in. Leave advice. And thanks in advance for reading my rush thread. |
WOOHOO for another Texas Rush Story....not to mention a school w/ ADPi!
Good luck!!! |
Good Luck!
Just wanted to say Good luck to you and your search for a home! I'm not sure how rush works there, but I wouldn't worry about being a minority or a Junior - a great sister is a great sister no matter what.
Please keep us all updated on how everything goes & good luck! :D |
Yah hoo for another TEXAS school!!! I've heard that all four chapters at Sam are FABULOUS. Any of them would be a good choice. Of course I pull for one a little more than the others.
|
all the best to you...
have fun, meet lotsa nice folks and see what happens. the "who knows" factor is always intriquing. |
I don't usually post in these threads, but don't worry about your race. As a black woman who's an active sorority member- If you be yourself, present yourself well, show alot of interest in being Greek, and have grades/other good qualities, you'll do just fine.

All about ADPi :D GOOD LUCK!!!!!! Have a wonderful time!!!!!! |
Hi Girls. So I just got back a lil while ago from day one of recruitment which was orientation/brag night. It was a lot less stressing then I thought it would be. When I first got there I was a little apprehensive about the minority thing but after a few minutes I forgot about it. So I will name the 4 sororities by cartoon names.
Doug PepperAnn Braceface Lizzie So Doug was pretty nice. All the girls seemed really cool and easy to talk to xcept for the last one I talked to. She seemed really nervous and kept looking out into spacfe. It ws kind of hard to talk to her bc it seemed like she was just waiting for someone else to come toalk to me. PepperAnn was great. It was so easy to talk to these girls and I wasn't nervous at all. One of them actually commented on how calm and collected I was. And that was when I realized I wasn't nervous. It was not nearly as scary as I thought it would be. The girls from this house were super energetic and super excited about their sorority. They had so much to say I actually had lil time to ask ?'s, although they did answer most of them. My fav from today, and from what I heard a lot of other people's fav as well. Braceface was nice. I already knew of a girl from this sorority and she happened to be my first member I talked to. SHe seemed really nervous as well. But overall it was a nice experience. One of the girls i had to talk to didn't have much to say though. It was kind of weird. I kind of felt like they just weren't in to me. Nice girls, but hopefully I'll have better conversations tommorrow. Lizzie was the sorority that I previously liked more then the other ones. However today they kind of fell down the list. The girls didn't have too much to say about their sorority. I wanted to know about community service but they couldn't tell me too much. But some of the girls were very energetic and just came up to me and introduced themselves while I was talking to another member. But the last member I talked to was a lot more lively. She made me like the house a lil better. Very friendly and had a lot of good things to say. I guess if I had to rank them I would say PepperAnn Lizzie Doug Braceface They are all great sororities so it is a really hard choice. I only got to meet a few girls from each so I don't know enough about any of them to be set on one. It is still up in the air. Although I love Lizzie's founder background, and PepperAnn's Philanthropy. Hmm. We'll see. So I know I read somewhere I am supposed to take everything offered. they kept offering me bottles of water, but I drink slow and never finished b4 it was time to go. Is it okay to not take everything. I just hate wasting. Also I kind of ran out of questions to ask. What would be some good type of questions to ask for philanthropy night? Also the simple dress I bought for skit night simply won't fit. I was going to just wear a skirt with a kind of dressy shirt instead. And for philanthropy I am wearing some capris with a dressy shirt and heels. Is that appropriate? Thanx for all the help yall keep giving me. I really do appreciate me. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Wish me luck. Hopefully I'll by friday I can be a cartoon sister, lol. |
Rooting for pepperann!!!!
I think the clothes you have picked out sound good. Can't wait to "read" more tomorrow :D Good Luck!!!! |
Good Philanthropy questions??? I'm sure you've done this, but....
Have you looked at their websites to see what their national philanthropy is? Does it pertain to anything you have done in the past? Can you draw from that experience? What local philanthropies do they support? Is it just raising money or do they actually interact with their philanthropy? Do they participate in campus sponsored projects? Do they support and participate in other Greek orgs phil events? I would be they do a little bit of everything!!! For the sister recruiting you....what's her favorite philanthropy project? How did she feel when she helped out? How is the project you are working on going to help/support the local philanthropy? Has she become more involved/aware of philanthropy opportunities when she joined her chapter. Then, feel free to stray into other topics you are interested in....the chapter's campus involvement, social activities, intramurals, etc. Whatever you are comfortable with. Good Luck!!! |
Yeah! A recruitment story with Sigma in it! I guess I'm going to have to give in to the temptation to become a GC recruitment story addict again this year....sigh...
Best of luck to you! |
So I am so excited for today. At 2 we start our group meetings with our Rho Gammas. Then from 3:15 to 8 we will be attending philanthropy parties. I am excited. I love my outfit. I also bought a bracelet and some cool unique earrings to wear with it. I won't to find a necklace but I couldn't find one that went with the overall look. I'm excited. I want to stick out in a good way, and I want to be remembered so I am trying to think of some interesting ?'s that not everyone is asking. I know I already stick out a lil because of a certain aspect but I don't know. It is kind of hard to share my accomplishments with them because we get so little time. Today is longer so hopely I'll have a longer time to connect with the girls. After much thought I realize that I still like all of the girls and can't choose which I prefer yet. I met the best sample of people from PepperAnn, but I know that they all have a variety of people and I would need to fit with the whole variety. So yeah wish me luck. Thanks for all the comments and PM's I've been getting. They are really encouraging.

Good luck and have lots of fun!
|
I just got back from the parties tonight. I am having so much fun and gaining so much from this experience. Talk about learning how to make friends. Today was great. I had fun learning all about the different philanthropies and community service. I absolutely love giving back to the community so the community service aspect of the sororities was really exciting. I told them all about how I love doing community service and that my family even does community service as a whole. Surprisingly many told me that most girls hate it. But yeah it was a very fun night.
At Doug I had a good time. I really connected with the girls I talked to and loved their skit. I like their philanthropy alot. I like their group but I am not sure if they are the sorority I want. PepperAnn was great tonight as well. Their skit was adorable. It was fun. I really enjoyed talking to all the girls and actually met one who looks like and acts just like one of my best friends. It was very neat and I felt that I connected with them really well, even more so then DOug. Braceface was cool as well. I didn't feel as strong a connection here though. I couldn't think of much to say, and even though their philanthropy is something close to my heart it is not my passion when it comes to community service. Lizzzzzzzzie. Wow tonight these girls were great. I really felt a connection with these girls. I was actually talking to 3 members at one time and I felt totally comfortable. I felt like I was just hanging with some friends, and not at a actual rush event. I loved the craft we made here because it came out really pretty, and if I was on the receiving end I know it would make me happy. I also have a friend who had involvement with their philanthropy, and that I actually helped out as well, so I liked it alot. I always wanted to do stuff with their philanthropy before I knew it was their philanthropy but didn't know how. I was even so caught up in conversation hear that we didn't even realize it was time to go. Overall, this is one of the best experiences of my life. I have had a great time, and I am so glad I decided to finally go through with this. I should have done it earlier, silly me. But yeah my rank PepperAnn and Lizzie are now tied. Doug Braceface Tommorrow is the first day of cuts. I hope I get invited back to at least the top two. But in a perfect world I would get invited back to all, just in case I didn't get the full feel. So tommorrow is Skit Night. I am soooooooo excited. Our Rho Gammas were talking about how the numbers will be dwindled by tommorrow, but they wouldn't say anything about being totally cut. Hopely my dreams come true and I end up in the sisterhood that is right for me. Tonight we are doing a scavenger hunt around campus with our groups. I'm excited. Oh yeah there are 5 groups. From what I heard there are 108 girls rushing and quota is 60. So yeah that seems like a lot of broken hearts. I don't really understand the process so could someone break it down for me if thats allowed. Also what do u think my chances are? I know from a small poll of people most peeps want Braceface and PepperAnn. Thanks again for all the comments. They are really helping to make this week stressfree. I actually feel ahead of the gang bc of all of the suggestions on GC. Can't hurt, might help. lol. |
This makes me want to go through rush..now I see how addicting these threads can be!
Glad to hear you are having such a good time SilMil20!:D Keep up the positive attitude and mostly enjoy yourself - Any of these 4 groups would be lucky to have you! |
okay not to sound like a total dunce...
But if quota is 60 and there are 4 houses that is a possible of 240 slots. If only 108 girls are rushing, everyone is almost like guareenteed a spot. So somewhere the math is wrong. Either quota is lower or more girls are rushing or I'm a blonde and totally confused :D Crossing my fingers for Lizzie and Pepperann tomorrow!!! |
amen to that...keep your chin and your energy level up. sounds like you are a winner. let's see where this leads.
good luck. |
well from what I understand if a chapter already has say 45 girls, then they can only take 15 girls. So yeah, kind of worried. ELIMINATIONS ARE TONIGHT. So yeah a bit nervous, although I seemed to get a good vibe from the houses that I want.
|
Okay, so it sounds like total is 60, not quota. Got it.
Just keep thinking positive :) And remember you have everyone reading this thread who is just as nervous as you are for you :D |
Yes I know, and I thank u all for reading about it. So yeah I woke up at about 6:30 this morning and laid in bed til about 8. So yeah I am so ready to find out who invited me back. PepperAnn and Lizzie. I felt the most at home at these two houses and absolutely loved the girls. So yeah I head down to the lobby at 8:45 for a lil more waiting before we find out. I am sooooo excited, but at the same time scared. Oh well. Wish me luck.
P.S. Sorry for the typos, some times I am kind of a ditz. |
I'm so glad to hear that you're having a great time! I can't wait to hear where you're going back to today.
I will obviously root for whichever one ADPi is, but also rooting for Pepperann and Lizzie!!! Good luck! :D |
Just got back from cuts and I am a little sad. I was cut from two houses. Braceface and Lizzie. Being cut from Lizzie really hurt. As I said earlier, before I started recruitment they were the group that I liked a bit more then the others. And yesterday I had such a great time at their house. I thought I really connected with these girls so it was a huge disappointment. I wasn't that upset about being cut from BraceFace because I really didn't connect with those girls. It was hard to hold a conversation with them. I am sooooooo excited I got invited back to PepperAnn though. They are my top choice. I really would love to be sisters with these girls. And that's kind of funny because coming in to rush I didn't know anything about them really. I am also happy I was invited back to Doug. I felt a connection with these girls as well, just not as much as PepperAnn. The only thing is is that I know that most girls want PepperAnn and BraceFace.
I was already cut from 50% of the houses and there are more cuts in the morning. I am soooooo nervous. I really want to get an invite for Pref night from both PepperAnn and Doug. Obviously I absolutely love PepperAnn the most. What do yall think my chances of getting an invite from PepperAnn are? Is there anything I should do at Skit Night to make a better impression? Also, all of the ?'s they gave us to ask for tonight are the same ?'s we've been asking for the last two days. What should I focus on talking about tonight at the parties? I'm really excited for tonight, but I am also super nervous. I know that if I did join PepperAnn I would be the only minority. Do yall think they could still want me? Sorry for asking all these crazy ?'s but being cut made me a little nervous. I am just so excited and I really want to join the great sisterhood that these sororities portray. We meet at 1:45 again so I will be checking this periodically to see if anyone has any advice. Thanks again. Everyone on this website is making this process so better. I would have probably not even made it to today had I not found this website. I am not a legacy and I don't know anyone in a Panhellenic sorority so I came in kind of blind. |
Good luck! :)
|
My recommendation for tonight is to not focus on asking questions about the sorority. I would just focus on having a real conversation with the girls and getting to know them (and letting them get to know you). This way they can really see how you will fit into their chapter. Others may not agree with me, but I personally think that that will have the most impact on the chapters.
As for being a minority- OF COURSE they will still want you! If you are offered a bid from either of these chapters, know that it is because they saw something special in YOU that they want in their sisterhood- not your race. Also know that if by some chance it doesn't work out, it is also not because of your race. Sometimes things like that just happen. I think that you are doing everything you need to be doing. You are obviously very enthusiastic and the chapters will notice that. So, tonight just focus on being yourself and getting to know the ladies you meet. Things will end up the way they are supposed to! Keeping my fingers crossed for you! :) |
Don't be concerned about your race hun! Seriously, if a chapter wants to have you as a member, they will bid you.
During skit night, be attentive to the skit. Belive it or not, sisters do notice if girls are staring off into space, rolling their eyes, or playing with their hair instead of watching. If you like it, tell the rusher you liked it. Since skit night deals with sisterhood, ask what types of sisterhoods they have, their fave social event, their most memorable XYZ moment, etc. Ask what made them choose their chapter. I'm sure you know no one here can tell you what your chances are, but I can tell that you're dealing pretty well with the stress of cuts and such. They can be tough, but you seem to be pretty good at regrouping afterwards, keep it up! :) |
I totally agree with what Lindz and Jocelyn said. Being anything other than yourself would be a mistake. You will always be proud of yourself for just being you. Cuts may happen and take away some choices, but no one can take away your pride in yourself.
Good luck!!! And have fun!! |
Thanks. I also have another question. What should I say to the sororities to make sure they know I'm interested. Do I tell them that I really like their sorority and feel at home? At PepperAnn I really did feel at home, so I'm just wondering.
|

You're interested in PepperAnn, so SHOW them by engaging in the conversation while genuinely listening to the sister and commenting where appropriate. Like I said, if you really like something they do as a chapter, acknowlegde it with a positive response. Just continue doing what you've been doing. |

Totally agree on the paying attention during skit. I had a small part in one skit and a primary job of mine was to watch girls' reactions. There were those who were laughing and singing along and having a great time and then this one little YKW who was rolling her eyes the whole time and I read her lips as she leaned over to the girl next to her and said, "This is soooo stupid." You can guess how I felt about each.
I also agree with don't gush but DO still look and sound interested in what they are about. I never thought it was weird for a rushee to say, "I have really enjoyed your parties" or something along those lines. Compliment without seeming overly excited or enthusiastic about being there, because that can get weird. Ask good questions like what do they like most about their sorority and relate their answer to yourself. When doing recruitment workshops we have this thing called find a need fill a need. You find what it is the person is looking for and relate to them how your sorority can fill it. Do the same. So like ADPi is super involved with the Ronald McDonald House. You could say (if it's TRUE!!) that you like doing volunteer work and love children, or that you used to work with underpriviledged families back home, etc. See what I mean? GOOD LUCK! And GO PEPPERANN!!!!! |
Quote:
Ditto for rooting on the ADPi one (if we are still in the running :D) I'm sorry that you were cut from Lizzie. :( But there's still PEPPERANN!!!! Is Pref tonight or tomorrow night? Just think positive. Obviously the sisters in Pepperann and Doug saw something in you that said "hey we should invite her back and get to know her some more". Just remember that :D |
amen to that...
keep the faith and see what happens. |
Ok...so I'm going to watch Pepperann tonite with my kid sibling and send good vibes your way. Best of luck!!!!
|
Well I'm back and not nearly as excited. I went to PepperAnn and Doug. Doug just didn't feel like home. Like I didn't feel like these girls were really interested in me xcept for my race. They kept saying how they all heard soooo much about me and wanted me to come back, but I don't know. In PepperAnn I liked their skit, but I don't think they will invite me back. I would really love it if they did, but a lot of people were invited back to them so I know they have a lot of people to choose from. So I don't know. I am getting kind of apprehensive. I guess I can only wait for tommorrow. I really wanted PepperAnn, but whatever happens happens.
But I know I am lucky. SOme girls only got invited back to one house and that was Doug. So a lot of girls were upset and even said that they are quitting. |
Quote:
Also, and I don't know if it is ok to say this (I am not in the sorority that I am about to mention, no "dirty rushing" and all of that). I won't mention the sorority by name just in case it is not ok. Condileeza Rice was in one of those 4 sororities. (not that specific chapter but that national organization i think from California) I found that very interesting. |
Yeah I knew about Condoleeza Rice being in the sorority. But I didn't want to join a sorority because they had black members, I want to join one because I like the sisters.
|
sleep well tonight knowing you have done the best that you can...and see what happens.
until it happens, you just don't know. |
Just think positive.
Like I said earlier, they saw something in you when they invited you back today. I personally feel your chances are good, just keep thinking that. As for Doug, just remember to keep an open mind. Take it as a compliment that they had heard so much about you and they wanted you to come back. |
Well it was a compliment to be invited back and that they talked about me, but their house just doesn't seem like the right decision. It really seemed like all the girls going to that house only went because they had to. We aren't allowed to turn down invites unless we got four. And the parties at their house had like 10-15 people today. And everyone looked glum. I am trying to see the bright side of it, but I don't know. We'll see. I just don't want to pledge a house and spend all that money if it isn't true in my heart. If I get cut from PepperAnn what could I do. They don't do COB at my school so I don't know if there would be any other opportunity. And I feel like Doug will give me a bid. I'm in between a rock and a hard place. Ahhhh, confusion.
|
Quote:
Oh well, listen don't worry about the "cuts" usually it means you are heading "where you belong." Even if you get your second choice, give them a chance. Oh yea, and I went to a smaller school and I was told this by my "rho chi" ALWAYS put down all 4 sororities. No matter where you went for pref, cause you never know how those lists fall. And really how different can those 4 sororities be between eachother. (this is coming from a 34 year old) There are always various different girls in every sorority so no matter where you end up there will be a place for you. DON'T STRESS you seem like you have something to offer any organization. |
