We are zebras and you are.....?

At Gamma Iota, we use the zebra as our mascot for ZTA. I know a lot of other chapters use the bunny. What's your mascot?

And part two of this question.... does your chapter have a "dessert" (other than strawberries?) Our tradition is the peppermint/oreo dessert. We would make an oreo crust and use pink peppermint icecream inside. Yum!

DixEGalZeta 08-10-2005 11:58 PM

Teddy Bear!

Just strawberries for us!

ZTABullwinkle 08-11-2005 01:18 AM

My chapter started out using a clown, but changed it to a bunny (not sure when).

As for a special dessert, I usually make dirt cake for Preference and retreat. Using strawberries of course for the "plant." My chapter sisters LOVE it!

blueangel 08-11-2005 06:25 AM

That was probably a smart move. Did you know that there are people with "clown phobias?!!"

ZTAngel 08-11-2005 08:17 AM

My chapter used the white tiger as our symbol.

ZTAMich 08-11-2005 08:57 AM

My chapter used the Turtle as our mascot.

It's fun in our alumnae group to talk about what our different mascots our chapters used.

EtaPhiZTA 08-11-2005 09:13 AM

We used the Zeta "cuddle bunny" as our mascot. No special deserts at my chapter. I feel so deprived!:(

radioZTA 08-11-2005 10:31 AM

We used teddy bears my pledge semester. The next year our province president came in and got rid of any animal mascot. That was the late 1980's. Now I've seen the girls use bunnies.

I didn't know that bunnies were considered a Zeta thing until after I graduated from college. I have always collected bunny stuff and now have a little bunny as a pet. He is gray, of course!
http://mysite.verizon.net/resoabei/s...g.w300h250.jpg

We had chocolate covered strawberries at pref and as our special treats.

gaangel5 08-11-2005 04:10 PM

My chapter used angels as our mascot.

FSUZeta 08-12-2005 01:12 PM

back in my day, we had butterflies as our mascot at fsu. now they have the bunny.

and blueangel-that was our dessert!! we always served it at prefs. and it was even published in the zta cookbook that came out in the 90's(or was it the '80's?)

ladies, if you've never tried this, ya just gotta!!

use the largest pkg of oreos you can find and a gallon of peppermint ice cream.finely crush oreo cookies, sprinkle a layer of cookie crumbs into a 13 x 9 pan(reserving half of crumbs ) spread softened peppermint ice cream on top of crumbs and sprinkle the remaining crumbs on top of ice cream. cover and place in freezer until frozen. cut into squares and serve on chilled plates. yum yum!!

we called this "ant hill pie" at our house.

zetamere 08-12-2005 04:00 PM

Delta Lambda's mascot (Ga State) is the gator. Kappa Sigma helped the chapter a great deal when it was colonized in 1961 and as a thank-you the chapter adopted their mascot the gator. We're the only gators we know of in Zeta Land.

There are some other unusual mascots out there, keep the posts coming! Christopher Newport in VA, our newest chapter, adopted the Flamingo!

ZTABullwinkle 08-12-2005 04:45 PM

I had no idea bout CNU. That is too cool. If you want letters with flamingoes, let me know. I know who has them! :D

radiozta - I think the fear of clowns was one reason our mascot was changed to a bunny.

FSUZeta 08-12-2005 04:45 PM

kappa tau chapter at fl. gulf coast university has flamingoes as their mascot too!!

blueangel 08-12-2005 04:56 PM

Just out of curiousity, is there any reason we've never adopted a national mascot?

And... FSU Zeta.... question for you. I don't remember ever hearing any mention of strawberries in connection with ZTA when I was in school. Were strawberries adopted as a symbol fairly recently?

DixEGalZeta 08-12-2005 06:44 PM

Strawberries have always been a part of Zeta....

They've been a symbol since ZTA was founded. Mary Jones received them as a gift and that's how they became our symbol.

cntryZTA5 08-12-2005 09:33 PM

My chapter (Theta Omega) uses the teddy bear.

The chapter I advise (Kappa Theta) uses the bunny.

Yes, I've heard that story... however, there was no mention of strawberries at all in my old pledge manual of 1978. The only symbols mentioned were the crown and the "zeta lady." Nobody ever mentioned strawberries the whole time I was a pledge.

Dianne 08-13-2005 02:31 PM

My chapter used ladybugs. USC uses bunnies, too.

I was so relieved to see your post, blueangel. I didn't know about strawberries either until sometime in the last few years. I pledged in 1985, and I don't remember learning about this during my pledge period at all.

I pledged in 1987 and I vaguely remember hearing about the strawberries but it wasn't until the PP came to town to "clean house" that they were really pushed as a symbol.

Got the bunny picture fixed, too.

What an cute bunny? Is he a baby?

I had a rabbit when I was a kid. I'm a big animal nut! OOOoh... gives me an idea for another thread......

radioZTA 08-14-2005 01:05 AM

He is two years old but he is very small. He is a Siamese Dwarf and weighs about 5 pounds.

My husband is allergic to cats and dogs but not rabbits. Go figure.

blueangel 08-14-2005 01:18 AM

How cute!!! We had litter box trained my bunny, but then she started pulling out the wall to wall carpet strand by strand-- and when we caught her chewing on electrical wires and the console TV-- it was outside in the hutch! But I still brought her in a lot to play and get exercise.

radioZTA 08-14-2005 01:25 AM

The first week, Lucky chewed a wire on our brand new stereo system. He has also destroyed part of a wall and nibbled on furniture. My husband called him "stew" for about 3 months.

That is why you see toilet paper rolls surrounding him in one pic. He also has his own cardboard box and phone book to tear up plus he gets to nibble on the newspaper everyday after we're finished with it.

FSUZeta 08-14-2005 10:50 AM

larue, i love your bunny!! and you are so right about the strawberries-i think that we are showing our age. i do not remember anything about the strawberries during my time at fsu and blueangel and i were pledges at about the same time. i thought it was just me having forgotten. by the way, that would be a great FRED topic-when did we start using the strawberry as a symbol?

FSUZeta 08-14-2005 10:54 AM

i have met many national officers who always stressed that zta does not have a national mascot. i wonder if the strawbery story was dusted off and put into action because the chapters wanted a national mascot?

good grief!! now i have images of zetas in giant strawberry suits, singing and dancing in unison.

OrigamiTulip 08-14-2005 11:02 AM

radioZTA, your bunny is too precious!

ZTABullwinkle 08-16-2005 09:24 PM

Larue-

I have heard about the bunny, but I have never seen pics of him. He is SOOOOO cute!!!

zlam,
meredith

radioZTA 08-16-2005 10:27 PM

Thanks, Meredith! He is SO high maintenance but such a cutie! (sounds like a boyfriend I had in college!) ;)

I had a white rabbit while growing up. He liked to lift the small metal bars between the two rooms of his outdoor house by using his teeth. Must be a rabbit thing...drove my grandpa crazy at first trying to figure out who took the bars out then we saw the little bite marks....

As much as I liked my chapter's Tutle mascot, I liked the bunny the best as a second choice!!
