PHOENIX -- Wayne Gretzky, the NHL's all-time leading scorer, will be the new coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, the Arizona Republic reported on its website Sunday.

Gretzky, the team's managing partner, is expected to be introduced as coach Monday, multiple NHL sources told the paper.

Team spokesman Rich Nairn told the Associated Press he could not confirm the story. He said the team had no events scheduled for Monday.

There had been speculation for several months that Gretzky would move from the Coyotes' front office to their bench. But the nine-time MVP had said he would wait until a new collective bargaining agreement was in place before deciding whether to coach.

The newspaper also reported that former Detroit assistant coach Barry Smith would be one of Gretzky's assistants.

Former Coyotes player Rick Tocchet or interim head coach Rick Bowness will be Gretzky's other assistant, according to the report.

Gretzky, who is the final year of a five-year contract with the club, is a longtime friend of Coyotes general manager Mike Barnett. Barnett said the day after the new NHL collective bargaining agreement was reached last month that Gretzky was very interested in the coaching position.

Barnett, Gretzky's former agent, said the decision would rest with the hockey great and his family, who currently live in Los Angeles.

Gretzky retired in 1999 after 20 seasons in the NHL. "The Great One" helped the Edmonton Oilers win four Stanley Cups, and is the NHL's all-time leading goal, assist and point producer in the regular season and playoffs.

Gretzky has already committed to serve as executive director for Team Canada at the Winter Olympics in Turin in February.

The Coyotes have a new $220 million arena, which they have yet to play a full season in. They moved to the Glendale Arena in December 2003, but they didn't get opportunity to open a season there before the lockout began.

In Atlanta, the eight owners (of both NBA/NHL) have gotten into a fight over an NBA free agent, and the one who is the NBA governor (team rep) has tried to veto a player signing, and has sued the other seven.

Who know what will happen if some expensive hockey player comes along.

Some big name was signed by Atlanta. Bobby Holik was signed to a three-year 12.75 million dollar contract. He was with the New York Rangers.

I haven't heard anything about a suit though...

Bertuzzi, 30, was suspended indefinitely for sucker-punching Colorado Avalanche rookie forward Steve Moore during an NHL game played in March 2004.

"I find that the appropriate discipline to be imposed for Mr. Bertuzzi's conduct on March 8, 2004, is the suspension that has been served to date," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman stated Monday.

Bertuzzi's suspension lasted the final 13 regular-season games of the 2003-04 season and the Stanley Cup playoffs, which, for the Canucks, translated into seven more games.

Bertuzzi remained under suspension throughout the 310-day lockout and prohibited from playing in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey , two world championships and any European pro league.

He also forfeited $501,926.39 US in salary and hundreds of thousands more in endorsements.

"A total suspension of approximately seventeen calendar months, from the date of the incident, is the appropriate sanction to impose in this case, given the nature and severity of the act in question and the overall totality of circumstances," Bettman continued.

As Bettman alluded to, Bertuzzi wound up charged by Vancouver police and later pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm.

He was sentenced to one year's probation and 80 hours of community service.

Part of that probation was that Bertuzzi not engage "in any other sporting activity involving Mr. Moore as a participant."

"Mr. Bertuzzi is on notice that will be held strictly accountable to a higher standard than other NHL players for his on-ice conduct during the 2005-06 season," Bettman cautioned.

Moore later filed a civil lawsuit in Denver against Bertuzzi and head coach Marc Crawford, ex-Canucks forward Brad May and GM Brian Burke and Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Canucks.

Bertuzzi formally requested to be reinstated April 27 in a seven-hour hearing with NHL officials at the league offices in New York.

Bertuzzi and Moore both took part in the hearing for approximately two and five hours, respectively, yet did not meet.

Afterward, the NHL claimed it needed to digest everything before rendering its decision on Bertuzzi.

"I believe that Mr. Bertuzzi is genuinely remorseful and apologetic for his actions ... and the consequences that have flowed from such actions," Bettman said.

Moore, now an unrestricted free agent, sustained a broken neck and cuts and still suffers from post-concussion syndrome which prevented him from exercising until recently.

"He is trying to train," said Tim Danson, Moore's lawyer.

"He's trying to get back to where he was. There's challenges, he's moving along.

"He is determined to make a full recovery and resume his NHL career. However, he has suffered very serious injuries and a serious head injury.

"He has to defer to the experts with respect to where he goes from here. Even if you make a full recovery by appearances, concussion injuries are a different kind of injury."

Bertuzzi, meantime, is slated to earn nearly $5.27 million US this season, his 10th in the NHL.

A two-time all-star, the Sudbury, Ont., native has 198 goals and 260 for 458 points with 911 penalty minutes in 628 NHL games with the New York Islanders and Canucks since being drafted 23rd overall in 1993.

"We're looking forward, as he is, to seeing him back on the ice," Canucks general manager Dave Nonis said.

Hockey Canada, too, wants Bertuzzi available for the 2006 Turin Olympic Winter Games.

"We will invite him to our training camp," Team Canada executive director Wayne Gretzky told TSN.

"He's an elite player and I expect him to have a great year and be part of Team Canada come February in Italy."

First overall pick of 2002 Entry Draft was youngest goal scoring leader in NHL history in 2003-04

COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed All-Star left wing Rick Nash to a five-year contract, club President and General Manager Doug MacLean announced today. As is club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Nash, 21, won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the NHL's goal scoring leader in 2003-04 when he tied Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk and Calgary's Jarome Iginla with 41 goals and added 16 assists for 57 points in 80 games. At age 19, he became the youngest player in NHL history to lead the league in goals and was the first teenager since 1987-88 (Edmonton's Jimmy Carson) to score 40 goals in a season. He also led the NHL in power play goals with 19, ranked 12th in game-winning goals with seven and appeared in his first All-Star Game.

In his first two NHL seasons, Nash collected 58-38-96 and 165 penalty minutes in 154 games, all before the age of 20. Only seven players in league history have scored more goals before their 20th birthday than Nash's 58 and his 41 goals in 2003-04 rank fifth-highest among teenagers in league annals.

"In my opinion, Rick Nash is the best young player in the world and I am thrilled for Rick, our organization and our fans that he is going to remain a Blue Jacket," said MacLean. "At 21 years of age, he has established himself as a true superstar in the game. He is a supremely talented player on the ice and a tremendous person off it. I believe our team is poised to take a major step and Rick is certainly going to play a significant role as our franchise continues to grow."

At the 2005 World Championships, Nash helped Team Canada capture the silver medal as he tallied 9-6-15, added eight penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of +7 in nine games. He led the tournament in goals, ranked second in points and was named to the All-Tournament Team. In 2004-05, Nash played in Switzerland and helped lead HC Davos to the league championship. He tallied 26-20-46 and 83 penalty minutes in 44 games, ranking second in the league in goals. In 15 playoff games, he notched 9-2-11 and 26 penalty minutes to rank third in playoff goals.

Nash was selected by Columbus with the first overall pick of the 2002 Entry Draft and made his NHL debut on opening night, Oct. 10, 2002, scoring a goal in a 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. He was just the eighth No. 1 overall pick to score a goal in his first game and the first to do so in his draft year since Mario Lemieux in 1984. Nash went on to register 17-22-39 and 78 penalty minutes in 78 games that season. He tallied 2-1-3 at the Topps/NHL YoungStars Game during All-Star Weekend, was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team and was a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's rookie of the year.

Prior to joining the Blue Jackets, Nash spent two seasons with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. He collected 63-75-138 and 144 penalty minutes in 112 career games, including 32-40-72 and 88 penalty minutes in 54 games in 2001-02. He also tallied 1-2-3 and two penalty minutes in seven games at the World Junior Championships that year, helping Canada win the silver medal. He was the OHL's Rookie of the Year and a member of the Canadian Hockey League's All-Rookie Team in 2000-01 after picking up 31-35-66 and 56 penalty minutes in 58 games with the Knights.

Detroit, MI -- Red Wings sign Osgood to one-year contract

The Detroit Red Wings announced Monday that they have signed veteran goaltender Chris Osgood to a one-year contract. As per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not released.

Woooohooo! I love Osgood!

Steve Belkin is the governor in question suing his fellow owners. The argument is over the signing of Joe Johnson, a guard who was a member of the Phoenix Suns.

It's turned into quite a nasty fight for a guy who's a solid enough player, but not really a superstar. I'm not sure why he'd pick to play for the Hawks over the Suns anyway (when the Suns would have matched the deal he got from Atlanta), but maybe that's just me.

Detroit has a whole new coaching staff, too. I'm kinda said, I liked Barry and Joey Kocur. :(

Where is Hasek? Is he still with Detroit? Or with Buffalo? Is he even coming back.

I am beyond pissed off!!! :mad: They didn't even lose that game, it was stolen from them. That goal should have been disallowed...from every angle, there was a clear kicking motion. I really don't know how I didn't break something last night.

Nice to see nothing changes when it comes to the red wings. What the heck happened on that last goal that they gave up? It was a 1 on 3 yet that guy waltzed in alone. They have to get a new goalie for next year. Get rid of Legace and let Ozzie walk and sign Loungo and bring up Howard full time to be the backup.

Even with the bad call on the third goal, it seemed like as soon as Edmonton scored their 1st goal, the Wings stopped playing. They had dominated the ice the first two periods and poof, they were gone. They gave up 3 (or 4 according to the ref) goals in ONE PERIOD.

I was so hoping for a dual Red Wings/Pistons championship. Can you imagine how fun that would have been? <sigh>

Full focus on the Pistons now. Shoot, the Tigers are playing well this season too.

ETA: I walked around depressed and angry all day cuz of those Wings. Tomorrow, we focus on Pistons only :)

Canucks trade Bertuzzi, Auld and Allen for Luongo, Kraijicek and a 6th round draft pick in today's draft.

The rumour of the Canucks picking up Luongo and sending Bertuzzi to FLA has been around for a while now. I am a little upset to see Allen go though, he is an awesome, gritty defenceman.

Here's hoping Luongo doesn't get swallowed by the goalie death trap that appears to exist in Vancouver.

Well aware of all of that. Not a very Southern bunch, quite true, and the Royal Bank of Canada swallowed Centura Bank quite a few years ago -- around here the Royal Bank of Canada is RBC Centura. (RBC Centura/Center. Get it?) I have an account there.

But definitely a team that has been embraced and cheered for both on and off the ice by the locals -- rednecks and transplants alike -- and by the community as a whole. Folks really don't care that the players didn't come from 'round here, anymore than Green Bay Packers fans care if the team isn't from Wisconsin. The locals definitely claim the Hurricanes and consider them adopted locals.

Which is what Redneck Hockey is really a reference to -- the fan base as much as the team.

Wow, I can't believe no one wrote a post for this topic (myself included) this entire season. Oh well.

I don't think anyone in Vancouver could have predicted the season that was. So incredible. And now off to the playoffs... Game 1 is this Wednesday night - round one vs. the Dallas Stars. The last time we played the Stars in playoff hockey was 1994...

Oh, and I'm so ecstatic that the Leafs didn't make the playoffs... <ducks and covers from GC Leafs fans...>

Were Toronto and Edmonton the only Canadian teams that didn't make the playoffs?

I have to cheer for Tampa Bay, since they are our new affiliate next season and the Blackhawks (surprise, surprise! NOT!) didn't make the playoffs yet again. It isn't going to be easy to beat New Jersey, but it is possible.

Montreal didn't make it either :(. It's just Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa.

The wings look good this season but the key is Hasek. I am nervous about the Calrgary series, Kiprusoff is one of if not the best netminder in the biz right now.

I like Buffalo in the east but man, 1-8 in the west are pretty close talent wise.

I want to see how Calgary fans treat Bertuzzi in game three.

Yeah, the Quebec Nordiques and the Winnipeg Jets didn't make it either, even though they were reincarnated as the Colorado Avalance and the Phoenix Coyotes (they didn't do so great).

Am going with the sentimental pick of cheering for the Pens in the playoffs. My first real hockey exposure was obtained when we moved to Pittsburgh, so without the Penguins I wouldn't be the CBJ fan I am today.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Don Cherry is bringing his loud mouth and louder outfits south of the border.

The outspoken former coach of the Boston Bruins, who has been a fixture on CBC's Hockey Night In Canada telecasts for more than 25 years, will make his U.S. broadcasting debut as part of NBC's Stanley Cup playoff telecasts, the network announced Tuesday.

"A lot of people have written that what I say up here I would never get away with it down in the States," said Cherry, the Bruins' coach from the 1974-75 season until the 1978-79 campaign. "I'll just go on and do what I have to do.

"In the States, they wanted me to go on one time in Pittsburgh. Jaromir Jagr, it was when he had long hair and he was with Mario Lemieux and I said, 'There's Mario and his daughter.' It didn't go over too good. That was my last time in the States."

Cherry will be teamed with Brett Hull, the never-shy former player who is in his first season with NBC.

"Better get some plaids," Cherry said.

Hull will also to contribute to CBC's coverage in Canada.

"He tells it like it is," Hull said of Cherry. "If they did it on a regular basis, he would be just as popular down here as he is up there. Part of the thing that's missing, not with just hockey, but in all coverage in the American sports world, is some personality. I think that's why you see a guy like Terry Bradshaw, as popular as he is.

"He's not just Mr. P.C., going, 'That was a nice catch and throw."'

I'm glad Sunday's overtime only lasted 7 minutes - thank you Taylor Pyatt. It sucks that tonight's game starts at 5 PM PST - I'll just be getting in the door... but that means an earlier finish, one would think...

Calgary who? I am worried about the series now that it is in the Saddledome. The flames have looked like fools in the first two games but they will come out strong tonight.
