Need suggestions for an office plant

So I have this huge new office (poor me, right?) but it's super empty looking.

I want to get a plant or two, but I have somewhat of a black thumb.

Can anyone give me suggestions on plants that can survive the office? Nothing too expensive :)

I'm looking to Carnation especially here!

carnation 08-04-2005 06:21 PM

Spathiphyllum (peace lily) or sanseveria (mother-in-law's tongue)!

ZTAngel 08-04-2005 06:24 PM

I can't even keep real plants in my home nonetheless my office. I managed to kill my bonzai tree and those things need hardly any care.

ragtimerose 08-04-2005 06:27 PM

Do you have a window in your office? Try an African violet. They like about the same conditions humans do: not too cold, not too hot, not too wet. If you don't have a window, they'll grow under fluorescent lights!

Besides, they're lovely plants. :)

Get some goodluck Bamboo or whatever it is they call it. I've named my plant "the gladiator" because he simply wont die.

Try a Boston fern.

kddani 08-04-2005 07:19 PM

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'll have to look into them.

I have 2 HUGE windows, and we're on the 36th floor with no buildings blocking us, so I get a ton of light pretty much all day.

Another dumb question, would I want to go to a nursery or something to get it, or can you get okay ones at like Walmart? :p Yes, i'm pretty much plant-retarded.

JenMarie 08-04-2005 09:11 PM

I got my office plant at Target... it was pretty cheap.

I have a baby arelco (??) palm because I misread the label and thought it said "leaves grow 4-6" when actually the whole thing grows 4-6 feet!

I should have gotten a cacti... but a lot of coworkers had bamboo plants.

SuperSister 08-04-2005 09:12 PM

An aloe plant is also a good bet, they're almost impossible to kill and don't need water that often.

DolphinChicaDDD 08-04-2005 09:19 PM

I like spider plants b/c they are supposed to suck up negative energy associated with computers. Or at least thats what I was told.

Tippiechick 08-04-2005 09:20 PM

Fake plants. They're gonna live no matter what.

aggieAXO 08-04-2005 09:21 PM

I am surprised no mentioned Ivy. Hard to kill and likes sunlight or shade. Needs minimal care.

Ivys are great, and when they start to look puny they perk right up and really quickly with some water.....I know tha sounds stupid, but I mean it happens really quick!!

WCUgirl 08-04-2005 11:25 PM

I had bamboo at my desk, but the problem is that they're sort of finicky. If you have air blowing directly on them, it will kill them, and they like sunlight.

The only spot on my desk where they could get sunlight was directly under the a/c vent.

I had to take them home.

tunatartare 08-04-2005 11:31 PM

Another vote for cacti here. I used to have a miniature bamboo plant at home and it was nice and all but it smelled horribly.

valkyrie 08-04-2005 11:46 PM

A venus attorney trap.

tinydancer 08-05-2005 12:04 AM

I have both ivy and peace lillies in my library. The ivies just grow and grow - they seem to like the flourescent lights. I just water them when the look droopy. The peace lillies do really well, but they take a lot of water - and I tend to get busy and forget about them.

All four big plants have lasted about 4 years so far.

Co-sign. I am sure to feed mine at least one cup of coffee per week.
My violet is especially sentimental...long story, but suffice to say that if I kill this plant, my mother would turn into supermom and fly me to a distant planet and leave me there. I have no window, but it flourishes under the fluorescent lights. HOWEVER, the office changed to some kind of low-engery bulb and my plant started to die (I still wonder what that light is doing to me!!!).

I have actually seen "silk plant duster" in a spray bottle. You can dust your silk plants and make it look like you are spritzing them!!!!
Good grief.

I'm putting in another vote for cacti here. They are the only plants I haven't managed to kill yet. Even when I forget about watering them for, like, two months at a time. :p

Peace lilies get potbound really fast and if they're taking a lot of water, it's time to move up a pot size!

CSUSigEp 08-05-2005 07:36 AM

Cannabis!

Yes, it's probably time to do that. This will make a good project for my library helper kids. They did it last time and loved taking the plants outside on the patio and playing in the dirt!

LightBulb 08-05-2005 06:46 PM

Cacti

Yes, my idea is winning!!!

lol, nothing yet. Too busy working and I have to move to a new apartment next week!

Maybe i'll get a couple. Though cannabis or venus attorney trap might be useful for getting through the day.

GeekyPenguin 08-11-2005 10:01 PM

I would get a piranha that eats tobacco.
