I'm having my wisdom teeth out tomorrow...

I'm really scared, guys. I don't wanna lie back, relax, and count backwards from 100!!! I've never been knocked out before. I saw that movie about the woman who ended up pregnant even though her had a vasec. and it turns out she was raped by the dentist when he put her out. Ever since then, I've been firmly against the whole "count back from 100" procedure, but it's necessary for this (I'll freak if I'm awake). I know it'd never happen to me, my mom will be right outside, but I'm still scared to death of what goes on when I'm not aware or not in control of my actions (which is why I don't drink).

AAAAAAAAUUUUUGGGGHH!!!!! IdonwannaIdonwannaIdonwanna!

I'll see you in a couple days...I hope....*in a dog howl* "They're gonna put me to sleeeeeeeep......" *whimper*

Jill1228 08-04-2005 03:24 AM

Hon, relax...it's not that bad. When I had it done, I don't even think I was able to count to 10 before I got knocked the hell out. Ya wake up with a mouth full of cotton. I was more relieved to have the damn things out. Mine were impacted and PAINFUL!

Good luck...just relax

moe.ron 08-04-2005 04:01 AM

Got mine out about 4 years ago. Relax, cause the pain will come after the surgery. You'll be eating through a straw.

cashmoney 08-04-2005 05:29 AM

Here's a tip:

inhale really deep when you're sucking on the gas and when the doctor keeps asking you if you're feeling any different keep telling him no and continue to do so until you start making some wise ass comment about him or if you start making comments about the DA's legs. After that its a stroll down the yellowbrick road.

KSigkid 08-04-2005 07:50 AM

Don't worry about it so much - I had two taken out last year. They only used a local (I wasn't knocked out) and I was fine. Honestly, the worst part was going off of the Vicodin.

Just relax, take a deep breath, you'll be fine.

xo_kathy 08-04-2005 09:41 AM

It's really not bad...unless you wake up in the middle like I did...but even that wasn't so bad. Seriously! You'll be fine. Good luck!

JenMarie 08-04-2005 09:47 AM

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You don't remember a thing while out cold and then you wake up and just want to go to sleep again. At least I did. They gave me Vicodin. I hated that stuff because I couldn't eat anything and it tore up my stomach. Jamba Juice will be your best friend.

lauralaylin 08-04-2005 11:58 AM

There will be others in the room, not just the doctor. He'll need at least one assistant. So don't worry about being raped, although that is a very scary idea.

When I got mine out, the doctor said something like "Hey look at this, the nerve here is very close to wear I'm cutting. You may have permanent damage. Here, sign this waiver." I freaked out and started crying, but it all ended up ok. No damage or anything, although I don't like that doctor. The worst part for me was coming out of the anesthesia. Being that out of it is really freaky. I'm glad your mom will be there with you. I have a friend who was picked up by other friends after her surgery, and they let her sleep on her side. She was in so much pain.

Good luck! I'm sure it will be fine. :)

christiangirl 08-04-2005 12:47 PM

I leave in 30 minutes. I would like all to know that you at least gave me a nervous chuckle before I go in. Nearly all of you had some horrible story to tell only to end it with "You'll be fine." WHAT KINDA SUPPORT IT THIS!!! lol...*whisper* "the GC kind..."

Love ya. Peace out.

emleepc 08-04-2005 12:51 PM

Don't worry. I had mine out (all of them) 10 years ago. No problems at all, and I came home and ate scrambled eggs, cause I was so hungry.

Relax.

dekeguy 08-04-2005 12:52 PM

I had two out a couple of years ago. Local anesthetic so I was awake, but I didn't feel a thing. They gave me some cotylenol but I just went to sleep for a few hours after I got home and never did need the pills. Soft food for a couple of days (Crabmeat omlette, creme brulee, cheese souffle, Bavarian Cream, geez it was rough! Don't sweat it. Actually, unless the Doc recommends a general I'd go for a local, the pain killer lasts longer and it doesn't hurt anywhere as much when you come back to earth. Also, assuming the Doc is a recognized professional and a member of the ADA he will have an assistant with him not only to help but to serve as a witness that all was done correctly and you were fully respected while under anesthesia. Good luck and don't worry about it.
By the way, I did get the munchies when I came back to earth so you might want to stock up on soft food that tastes good. She- crab soup, lobster bisque, poached eggs with hollandaise, trust me, you want to have easy access to good soft chow.

I should have thought of eating that when I had my wisdom teeth out. That's not a bad menu, especially when you're in pain.

Honestly though, I was able to eat almost normally by the end of the day, so I really had nothing to complain about.

BobbyTheDon 08-04-2005 01:08 PM

five years ago when i had it done, I came with 4 extra teeth.

I left with 4 less teeth and one less right wrist.

yes, I type with ONLY one hand now.

christiangirl 08-04-2005 05:35 PM

From the way they were talking to me, you'd have thought I'd be out for days. I'm actually pretty okay, but I freaked out for a minute when they got started and again when it was over. The nurse or whatever put the mask on and said, "Just relax, this is just plain oxygen, breath through your nose." They hooked me up to all these monitors to watch my heart rate and respiration and whatnot, which was kinda scary, especially when they strapped me to the table. Then, when they put the IV in, she asked, "Do you feel tingly?" and rubbed my arm. Automatically, my whole body started tingling and I'm thinking "It wasn't till she did that, what the hell kinda Jedi mind tricks is she playin?!?" Then I felt a little warm and fuzzy. After a few minutes, they put an extra tube in the mask without telling me what it was. I just stared at the ceiling for awhile thinking, "Dang, I've been laying here for awhile, when do I start counting?" As soon as I'd thought it, this new lady was poking me in the leg singing, "Wake uuuuuupp" At first I started to panic, realizing how much time had passed without me knowing, but I was so disoriented all the freaking out was in my head, I couldn't freak out physically. When I realized it was really over, someone brought my mom in and they talked to me till the room stopped spinning:rolleyes:. She put me in a wheelchair and took me outside 'cause there's no way I could've walked at that point, I'm still swaying a little bit. They gave me a rose (fake) for my bravery and that was it. My mouth is still bleeding so I put the gauze back in. I can't really talk and I look like a chipmunk, but I MADE IT!!! Woo-Hoo! Thanks guys, I know I was being a wuss, but I couldn't help it. :D

Jill1228 08-04-2005 05:39 PM

Glad things went well. I remember I cried...probably because i was so friggin relieved that I had no more pain! :)

Schmeer 08-04-2005 06:11 PM

It's not fun, but it's not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. Most people are so knocked out from the pain meds afterward they barely remember. You will drool a lot and it will hurt - but it gets better in no time.

ADPiZXalum 08-04-2005 06:12 PM

When I got mine out, it was the shortest doctor's visit I've ever had........I arrived, had surgery, and was out in 45 minutes. I dont' think I made it to 8 counting backwards from10..........I was out like a light and 2 seconds later I was awake. I only had two so that was good. I looked down at my feet and realized I was wearing my shoes and asked the nurse who put them on and she told me my mom was just there and went to get the car......then i started looking for my glasses and squinting bc i always squint when i look for my glasses (usually because I can't see!!) and I realized they were on my face! So I asked her, how'd my glasses get on my head? And she said, honey, your mom was just here. Ohhhhhhhhhh ok. It was funny. The next day my mother drove me back to Waco and the NEXT day I had to be back at work lifeguarding. Day one back at work I got to sit at the entrance and do wrist bands bc I was on painkillers, but being in 100+ degree weather on pain killers and in pain isn't good so I left. The next day I went on the stand and blew my whistle at some kid and started crying because oh man that hurt sooooooooo bad.

CutiePie2000 08-04-2005 07:07 PM

Well, if you don't want to be knocked out, you can always have your teeth removed like they did in the Wild West and just have a shot of brandy beforehand.

LightBulb 08-04-2005 07:27 PM

Just don't use straws or you'll get the dreaded *dry socket*... oooh they warn you about that one.

Mine was fine though. Only took pain meds for a day.

Hope your recovery is quick :)

christiangirl 08-05-2005 12:15 AM

I feel gooooooood......

Man, forget diamonds, this girl's best friend is sittin' right over there in that percocet bottle...:D :D :D

MeezDiscreet 08-05-2005 02:01 AM

i had all 4 removed at once and my dentist was really good. they gave me headphones with soothing sides (and to this day, i can't get even a cavity done without music), gas and novacaine (sp?). i slept through most of it except when they were working on the toothe that was impacted, i just felt a little pressure.

my doctor also gave me a list of things to do before and after (iron pills, tylenol every few hours). i also ate tuna fish a lot those first few days. i had minimal swelling and pain.

blueangel 08-05-2005 08:07 AM

I had two taken out, and was surprised at how easy it was. The dentist just gave me novicane. Aside from the crunching sound, it was no biggie.

I did look like a chipmunk that night though.

mmcat 08-05-2005 08:13 AM

three of four were cake. novacaine and not much else.
the last one was at an angle. still novacaine, but antibiotics and pain killers on this one.
yes, some drooling. yes, some straw action. but you do get better real quickly.

ADqtPiMel 08-05-2005 09:34 AM

I actually kind of enjoyed getting them taken out. I got to sleep for like 3 days straight and eat milkshakes and mashed potatoes. Plus it didn't hurt that bad - I didn't even need the Vicodin.

xo_kathy 08-05-2005 09:52 AM

Alright, now that it's done...

All 4 of mine were boney (sp?) impacted so I HAD to be put out because they cut open the gum and basically bust on a chisel until the tooth breaks into small pieces they can remove. OK, fine. When I woke up I told them I had a dream of being punched in the face. They all chuckled and said "Oh, that wasn't a dream. You woke up in the middle while we were breaking a tooth." Nice. Then they said I should always be sure to mention this epsiode any time I go for surgery. So now I'm paranoid that I'll be one of those people who wake up on the operating table and can feel everything but can't say anything b/c they are too groggy.

AND, I puked when I got home (and I NEVER puke so it was very traumatic!), AND the pain pills made me nauseous so I had to stop taking them AND when my boyfriend came to visit me a couple days later (it was summer break and we lived in different cities) he broke up with me!!! It was a bad experience all around! :(

aephi alum 08-05-2005 01:12 PM

Glad everything went well. :) Follow your doctor's instructions and hopefully you'll be fine in no time.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted at once when I was 19. I was lucky - the extractions weren't all that complicated. I had local anesthetic. When the oral surgeon got to the last tooth, either the novocaine was wearing off or the block hadn't been done right in the first place, because it hurt like he!! - so they re-did the block, waited a bit, then the tooth came right out. I had some ice pops, soup for dinner, and the next day I was eating solid food again.

My husband, on the other hand... has had such complications with his teeth. This is what happens when your parents don't have dental insurance when you're growing up. He's having extractions done now that should have been done ten years ago.

SmartBlondeGPhB 08-05-2005 01:51 PM

Yep, follow the doctor's instructions exactly.

I had mine out right after my freshman year of HS and my mom was determined to follow the instructions. Kept waking me up to change the guaze which was a big pain but I was eating scrambled eggs for dinner and had no bruising so the end result was great.

I don't remember being on strong pain killers, but then I was only about 14 (yes, my dentist was shocked that I needed them out that young).

ZTAngel 08-05-2005 01:54 PM

My surgery wasn't bad at all. I had local anesthetic, nitric oxide, and some fun stuff in an IV. I was hooked up to heart monitors and blood pressure monitors. Kinda scary.
I did wake up in the middle. I felt some needle-like jarring in my mouth and started to whimper a bit. I remember the oral surgeon asking if I could feel it. I shook my head yes and then can't remember anything else. Like xo_kathy, I have to mention this to the doctor if I ever need surgery. I'm petrified too that I'll be one of those people who wakes up in the middle of a major surgery (shudder).
The day of the surgery, I was pretty groggy afterwards and only remember bits and pieces of it. I remember my mom taking me to McDonald's after the surgery so I could get a strawberry milkshake. I came home and slept. Some friends stopped by to visit and they said I would just mumble incoherent things. Fun with painkillers!
The next day, I was fine. I even went out to dinner with my then boyfriend's family and was able to eat (slowly) some chicken and pasta. I think I took only a few of my Tylenol-3 prescription and moved onto regular Tylenol 2 days after the surgery. I had a bunch of pills leftover. My father used up the rest for when he had migraines. :(

I had some pretty heavy bleeding yesterday, but I'm alright now. I'm ambivalent about percocet. :D Ooh, that stuff had me tripped out for awhile. I was on here typing, and my eyes started to cross. Then, I couldn't type right 'cause my fingers were trembling. Then my arms and legs got really heavy and when I stood up I got nauseous and dizzy. I went to lay down on the couch and immediately felt better. When my friend called, I had to move to another room and everything came back when I got up, but when I laid down again, I was fine. After that, I was pretty energetic, I went to sleep around 2 am. I only needed them yesterday, I've moved on to rapid release Tylenol. You always hear it used in movies in jokes, but now that I've taken them, I must say I'll look rather fondly on this time in my life....

Dionysus 08-05-2005 04:31 PM

I was told that I needed my wisdom teeth extracted at 16. Hmmm...they still have not been removed. They don't bother me, so why should I have oral surgery. That's just scary.

Because if they don't come in all the way or come in at an angle, there might be parts of the tooth you can't clean well. Then, it will decay in your mouth and possible that decay will cause infection in the surrounding tissue and other teeth. That's why they took mine out, they were decaying in my mouth.
