epchick's rush @UTEP
Ok....so this is my official thread! Yippee!!
I'm very excited yet worried to go through rush again this year. I guess i'm worried because I went through Rush last year (Fall '04) and so i know i'll be kinda embarrassed to see all the girls i rushed with last year in a sorority and here i am---in a rush group again. Y'all know what i mean? But this time i'll hopefully be able to do what i should have done last year (and i'll leave it at that---discretion! lol) I dont know how many groups will be involved this semester...but last year there were 3 groups. They'll all be names from my favorite show---Charmed. So, we have- Prue Piper Phoebe I'm just ready for recruitment and everything!!! Take care all! |
Good luck!
|
Go Miners...
I'm here for you epchick. pm me if i can help. good luck. have fun and see what happens. lol |
Best of luck to you. And there are more changes than you would think in a year!
|
Good luck!!! Don't let the last year thing bother you - just go in with a positive attitude and knock 'em dead. :)
|
Good luck! Keep an open mind and post LOTS of updates!
|
Good luck!!:D
|
Good Luck!!!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the names. Charmed is like my all time favorite show :D I'm just gonna have to go with Piper (because her power is the coolest. LOL) |

Anyways---I'm trying to convince my mom that joining a sorority will be a good thing for me. Of course we went through the same thing last year and she ended up being "ok" with it. So I guess we'll just have to wait it out. I'm just antsy, waiting for recruitment to start. |
Good luck! I love seeing Texas rush threads. What are the dates of your rush?
|
Quote:
I'm going to guess that it will be around the 1st or 2nd week of September because that is when it was last year, but i'm not sure. I'll be sure to find out on the First day of school. |
WOW! That university's website is nearly impossible to navigate. Plus, there was zero reference to anything Greek whatsoever! For some reason....in Texas...that surprises me!
When you find out the dates, let us know (the recruitment date thread only shows September). Good Luck and have fun! -Trish **edited 'cause I can't spell today!! |
I agree - it's a poorly designed website that only works partly well on IE. and I prefer firefox.
Anywho, try contacting the folks shown on this page: http://studentaffairs.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=20197 Quote:
|
I totally agree about the website---that's UTEP for ya! lol.
I actually tried to contact Mr. Warfield (he was the Greek Life advisor), but I got an email back saying that the link failed. On the main page of the Greek life, there is a different person shown as the "coordinator" so i'm guessing that maybe Mr. Warfield isn't there anymore. UGH! I guess i'mma have to do a mega- email spree! lol. |
Ok, so I didn't have to go too far. Thanks to mmcat for this information:
dates for formal recruitment will be sept. 6-10 with informal events the first two weeks of classes.... [EDIT]--I read through the "advice for rush addicts" and decided to change the color of all my posts, so y'all can find them easier! YAY for me! lol[/EDIT] |
Good luck. :)
|
Good luck EpChick. I'm rootin' for ya!http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmili...n/cheering.gifAnyone who watches American Princesshttp://www.handykult.de/plaudersmili...llows/king.gifmust be ok
|
i watched american princess too...
epchick, i am thinking good thoughts for you. |
So I got my recruitment form today. I was so petrified because the people that were in my rush group (last year) were up there and I just didnt' want them to recognize me and wonder wtf? ya know? Oh lord. But I just went up there...asked for a recruitment form, let them tell me all the information I already knew, and then walked away before anyone recognized me! lol.
The more I think about doing this, the more excited and nervous I get. I mean I know what to expect since I rushed last year, but I'm just scared. UGH!! Oh Well. I have like 2 weeks until rush! |
First of all, thank you so much for using a different color - it's so easy to find your entries!
Second, I am so looking forward to hearing how your rush goes, especially because this is your second time and how you're nervous about interacting with friends on the other side. My daughter will be doing the same thing next semester and I'm worried about how that will go. So I'm going to watch your story unfold and maybe that can help me help her when her time comes. Good luck - I hope it's a great experience for you. |
If you don't want to share I completely understand but what happened the first time around that makes you embarrassed that you are going through rush again?
I wouldn't worry. Yes, you will probably be recognized and yes you will recognize some of the actives but remember they are different houses now than last fall. They now have all their fall 04 and spring 05 new members and then the girls who graduated in Dec. and May are gone. I'm sure everything will work out and it will run smoothly :D |
Well...in a nutshell, I had a bad experience with another sorority after I took their bid (if y'all have read some of my more recent posts, you might be able to figure out some of what happened). And I feel like the girls that were rushing with me last year might feel like my feelings are insincere. I'm already a very introverted-shy person, and so just knowing that there are girls who are gonna be on that "other side" and having questions, is getting me pretty nervous.
On the Flip Side--I have a conflict. I just got in the mail a letter saying that my induction to the National Society of Collegiate Scholars is gonna be On the 8th of September (which is 2 days before bid day). I don't really want to go---I do really regret paying my membership for that NSCS, but my dad says it is a good opportunity and a good resume booster. I dont really want to miss the rush events that day though, especially since it is so close to the end, that is when it really gets important. UGH!!!! I guess I'm going to have to talk this over with myself (lol)....maybe I can get my money back from my membership or something, or just not go at all! Any advice would be helpful! Thanks all :D |
Stay in the NSCS!! Your dad is right-- it is a good resume builder and a great opportunity!! I am sure it will work itself out-- I am sure you are not the only one!! Good Luck!!
|
dont't run from....
however, what does the induction involve? is it local? can things be worked out? just don't run to run....look to have fun and try to figure out this sabrosa craziness... pm if you need me. |
I say Stick with NCSC but talk with the advisor. Explain that you are not going to be able to make the induction ceremony.
Most honor organizations (especially those like NCSC and Golden Key) prefer you to go to the induction but its not mandatory. I know lots of people who missed our Golden Key induction. You have already paid your dues so at worse they will induct you next semester. |
Good idea UCFStefanie-- see if you can attend next semester's induction if there is one!! If not, I know plenty of people that have missed induction cermonies-- but are still members of the org because they were accepted and paid the dues.
|
Not meaning to burst your bubble, but it might be worth your while to check out this website:
http://www.cageyconsumer.com/students/scholars.html This sounds very similar to the National Society of High School Scholars, in which many are "invited" to spend $60 or so to have their name in a book. |
Have fun and good luck during recruitment.
|
NSCS is based on GPA/academic achievement...so you have to have a decent GPA to get into the organization. Not everyone can apply-- you have to be asked to join-- and not everyone is asked-- just people who have done well academically. I would just skip the induction...not give up the whole thing just because you cannot make the induction. Believe me- it will look nice on a resume when you graduate...it may not seem like a big deal now but it will when you are looking for honors and achievements to put on your resume. Just my final 2 cents!!
From the NSCS website- What Is NSCS? Honoring and inspiring academic excellence and engaged citizenship for a lifetime. - NSCS Mission Statement The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is an honors organization which recognizes outstanding academic achievement among first and second year college students and encourages members to develop leadership skills through community service. The Society was founded in 1994 at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. NSCS has active chapters at more than 205 college and university campuses across the United States. Chapters are involved in service to their campus and local communities, as well as scholastic and social activities. NSCS members are also eligible to participate in a variety of activities sponsored by the Society. Scholarships and awards, leadership development activities, service programs, community building and information sharing are the focus of activities organized nationally. This Web site offers information about many NSCS programs and services. If you have additional questions, please contact us at nscs@nscs.org. Back to the regularly scheduled thread....... |
Well, I contacted the people from NSCS, but no answer back yet. So I just contacted someone from greek life (I don't know the coordinator's email, so just left "feedback" in the contact us section). So I guess i'll have to wait to see what they say. I know that last year, we had a Greek Barbeque on a Thursday, so hopefully that will be the same this year and then it won't conflict.
6 more days til Rush starts! YAY lol. |
I realize that I am a little late to this thread, and this is a little tangential, but...
My AXiD lil sis was the president of NSCS at the University of Washington last year (her senior year) - I'm not sure where the "Cagey Consumer" website got their info, but it really isn't at all true. She had the opportunity to attend conferences, partcipate in service projects, network, etc... I think she even received a scholarship. here's a link to the NSCS website at UW if anyone would like to check it out: http://students.washington.edu/nscs/main/ As for NSCS not being recognized by schools, the keynote speaker for this fall's induction is the UW president. PFFFT on Cagey Consumer. |
Hi all,
I actually got this message from the President of the UTEP chapter of NSCS: Hello epchick, You are already in NSCS now. The induction ceremony is just that, a ceremony. It’s only the formal part of it. You can receive your member card at our next general meeting (yet to be scheduled). If you can’t make it, don’t worry about. It’s not like we’re going to kick you out (you’re not the only one who has schedule conflicts), so need to worry. So yay! I'm in the clear now. I'm still kinda mift that the Greek Life office never contacted me back about this situation, but i guess that is understandable with what's about to happen (Rush). Now the only thing to worry about is me! lol. I continually get those feelings of "YES I WANT TO BE GREEK" and then other times (mostly when i'm with my family, lounging around watching movies with my cousins and stuff like that) that make me feel like I dont want to give all that up--especially since I want to continue in my dance class. But a girl i grew up with (who went greek at UTEP) told me that shouldn't be a problem. That there might be times when those things conflict, but for the most part I'll still be able to go to dance class, and i'll still have as much time to spend with my family as ever. All I know is that if I let my dance class (which i know i wont continue forever) or let my cousins (who i'll still have forever) get in "my way" (for a lack of better terminology) i won't be too happy. This is something that i've looked forward to since I was younger. Lol..don't I sound sappy? lol. So now I'm just ready for tomorrow to come!! I have orientation tomorrow @4, and this year's rush is shorter, so I wonder if they are going to be combining days, or just eliminating some events. I guess we'll see tomorrow! keep ur fingers crossed guys!! |
Relax hon! Being in a sorority doesn't define your existence or monopolize all of your time. I took difficult courses, worked 2 jobs, had a serious boyfriend, had friends outside of the sorority and went home a couple weekends a month with no problem. It's all about time management and there is enough time for everything!
Dee |
deep breathes here...
just relax if it's meant to be. it shall. if not. a different discussion. |
It's all about time management. I'm a Sigma, I hold a position in my service group Kappa Phi, I do orientation activities at the beginning of school, I'm in 2 academic honoraries, and I'm taking 18 hours. If you manage your time, you'll be able to balance all your activities, a sorority, and hang with your family.
|
hang in there sweetie....
|
Hi everyone I'm back from day 1 which was just orientation.
This year there are 5 sororities participating in rush. The three I already knew: Phoebe Piper Prue Then there were 2 other sororities that ended up joining in, a local and a new national sorority. Paige Patty. So after they split us into groups and showed us the "dos" and "donts" of what to wear for this week, we got to visit each of the sororities. First, I went to Phoebe. The girl that rushed me today was the same girl that rushed me last year---she even recognized me! She asked me why I was rushing again, and who I ended up bidding last year....but I was discrete and evaded the whole "who did u bid last year" question and just told her that last year I didn't follow my heart and I didn't go to where I belonged. There was another girl who gave me that "oh-I-know-you-from-somewhere-look" but she never came up and asked...so yeah. The girl that rushed me today would introduce me as "epchick...the girl that rushed last year" lol, but it was ok. After Phoebe, I went to Patty. This is one sorority that didn't do rush with the NPC sororities last year, so it was good to find out about them. A friend of mine is in this sorority, but I didn't get to see her :(. I stayed real quiet in this group, and i dont know why, but I was just pretty much a silent observer. The next group I went to was Prue. Ok, Prue is the sorority that I have history with, and one of the girls is my friend who ended up continuing to pledge after I stopped and so I spend most of my time talking to her. It was great seeing her again, I hadn't talked to her in sooooo long! Then I went to Paige. This sorority also didn't participate in rush last year (the rush w/ the NPCs). A VERY small chapter (5 members) but its all good cause you could see how much they care for each other. Again in this group I pretty muched stayed quiet...I guess b/c this one and Patty were the sororities that I DIDNT know about, and so I just wanted to absorb as much info as I could. The last group was Piper. Last year I really didn't like this group, but now my attitude has really changed about them. I found out today that the Chapter President of Piper was in my rush group last year, so that was cool---she is an awesome person. In this group was the first time I actually learned how you get a big sister---that was something I had not known. So yay! lol I'm really excited to go back tomorrow. Tomorrow is philanthropy night, and this was the event that I couldn't attend last year, so i'm raring to go. So day 1 down, 4 more to go! lol |
do you have a good feel for things?
are you happy? hope so... sounds like you could find a home. all the best |
Hey good luck!

My only obstacle this week is my mother. I showed her my schedule so she would know what was going to happen, and she really didn't seem happy at all. She acted like this last year also, I really don't know what her problem is. Hopefully she'll come around. |
