March of the Penguins

Did anyone see this yet? What did you think? I'm going to see it with my mom after work tonight.

CutiePie2000 07-25-2005 07:11 PM

I want to take my niece to see it, since her Grade 2 class studied penguins for about 6 months, due to the teacher being obsessed with penguins.

tunatartare 07-25-2005 10:42 PM

Ok so I just came back from seeing it and I seriously have never ooh'd and aah'd so much in my life. I highly recommend it. It was so amazing and adorable.

Is it something to take a five year old to? Had to cancel on my neice this weekend, and thought that maybe I would take her to this.

tunatartare 07-26-2005 11:00 AM

Yes. There are a few sad moments in it, but overall I think it would be good for her. There were a few little kids there when we went.

bcdphie 07-26-2005 12:02 PM

I found this documentary absolutely fascinating. And cute to boot!

epchick 07-26-2005 03:23 PM

What is the point to this movie? Because (i might be the only one who thinks this) but a movie all about penguins---ones that aren't cartoony and talking--- does NOT seem all that interesting.

I haven't seen it yet, but I think (as per the synopsis) it's a documentary about penguins and how they have to journey hella far, in order to their nesting grounds to mate, reproduce, etc, carry on the species. I am sure that you catch my drift.

Does a hungry seal make an appearance? ;) :p

I absolutely love the previews! It looks like such a cute movie.

wrigley 08-10-2005 02:56 PM

I saw it last night. All I can say is wow. I think that Morgan Freeman did a great job as narrator. The cinematography(sp?) was fabulous. The colors were so sharp. I liked how they were able to film so close to the animals without appearing to disturb them.

I don't know if I'd take any child under 7 to this. I got sad at the some of death scenes and I'm a grown up. But the funny and touching scenes make up for it.

I wasn't into penguins before I went to see it. I have a new appreciation for them. The time seemed to go right by when I watched it.

GeekyPenguin 08-13-2005 11:39 AM

I loooooved this but I think we all know I have a soft spot for penguins. :D

honeychile 08-15-2005 01:19 AM

I've always loved penquins (supposedly, they make good house pets, so long as they can splash their feet a bit!), and really looked forward to seeing it. We missed the first 5 minutes, but I absolutely loved it!

I was freezing by the time I left, though!

Did you ever read the book Mr. Popper's Penguins when you were little? After my third grade teacher read it to us, I wanted to get a pet penguin so badly.

blueangel 08-16-2005 08:30 AM

That's exactly why I won't go see this movie. Why does every single documentary on animals have to have all those death scenes? I particularly won't see elephant documentaries because they always show abuse and poaching.

Because penguins get eaten! It happens! They freeze and starve too!

Are you a vegetarian?

Seriously! I couldn't help but think of how so many of the penguin emotions are so human!!

Yes definitely. The part where the mother pecks at her frozen baby to try to bring it back to life made me wanna cry.

ms_gwyn 08-16-2005 03:04 PM

I posted this in another thread:

I saw March of the Penguins this past week.....

man is that movie wonderful.....I just think how we complain about our lives and seeing what these Penguins go through every year....we really have nothing to complain about.

Morgan Freeman did a fabulous job of narration.

--------

Yes some of those scenes were very hard to take. When the mother lost her child and then attempts to take another.....
when the "new" couple loose their egg, when transfering....

Thank G-D they did not show younglings dying b/c their parents didn't come back....that would have been way to hard to take (like the youngling looking and waiting and the other parent having to leave)...that would have broke my heart.

But it is also a reaffirmation of life.

...and people die too. It happens! Shall we sit down and watch videos of people dying?

Why can't we celebrate the animal kingdom without having to always see gruesome death?

You and your media cohorts have no problem airing it on the news. We already do that.

::cues up Elton John::
it's the ciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiircle, the ciiiiiiiiiiiircle of life...

If you were a broadcast journalist, you would be fired making assumptions like that :D

I am not a general assignment news reporter/writer/producer/photographer/editor/anchor, therefore I do not "air it on the news" (meaning death).

There are many types of broadcast journalists... those who strictly cover entertainment news, religious news, sports news, etc. Not everyone belongs to the "If it bleeds, it leads" school of journalism.

That is why I am NOT a general assignment reporter, nor a crimebeat reporter, nor a foreign correspondent.

Now, back to the matter at hand... penguins. I am not a sadist, therefore I do not enjoy watching people or animals suffer. I do not feel it is necessary to include in every single animal documentary. It is time to celebrate life.

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it! :p

Rollergirl2001 08-16-2005 11:17 PM

I want to go see this movie. There's been many speculations that the movie may get an Oscar nominee. It would be great if a family film gets nomiated for an Oscar. It would prove that the movie don't have to be rated PG-13 or R to get an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, because many movies that get an Oscar nomination are either rated PG-13 or R.
