What do you not miss about college?

When I talk to other grad, all they continue to talk about is "What did you miss about GL and college?" so I have a new question:

What do you not miss about college?

I do not miss:

--paying dues (sorry)
--annoying roommates
--rising tutition rates (yikes)
--overly expensive textbooks
--cafeteria food
--boring teachers
--campus parking
--greek rivarly
--homework on the first day of classes
--super small dorm rooms
--working on group projects with slackers

These are all I can think of right now but I'm sure there are more.

The only problem is that in the 'real world', you still have many of those things:

--annoying co-workers/neighbors
--cafeteria food were you work
--boring/annoying managers
--parking were your work
--super small cubicles
--working on group projects at work with slackers/backstabers/etc.

aephi alum 07-19-2005 05:54 PM

At least, at work, you only have to eat the cafeteria food at lunchtime... and if it's truly atrocious you can brown-bag it. It's not like you've bought a mandatory meal plan and you have no choice but to eat Aramark food three times a day all semester. :p

I do not miss:

-- Having to share a room intended as a double with 2 other girls (who were evil, btw)
-- Being worked like a dog and having to pay for the privilege, instead of getting paid
-- Overpriced textbooks
-- Working on group projects with slackers (although, yes, this has often happened to me at work as well)
-- LOUD roommates and suitemates
-- Not being able to have a car (on-campus parking spots for undergrads were scarce)
-- Cafeteria food (fortunately we had a declining-balance plan, and the balance was refunded if you didn't use it... I learned to cook real fast ;) )

I don't miss the drama of being around girls who act like the sky is falling when the smallest thing doesn't go right for them!

OleMissGlitter 07-25-2005 04:27 PM

Well, since I work for my Alma Mater now, I still have to put up with the traffic and the parking on campus. I guess something that I don't miss is living in such small spaces, granted I did love all my roommates from the AOII house and the dorm, but gosh, those small rooms can make you go crazy! I definitely don't miss the price of textbooks these days! I've heard of students paying now almost $500 for books! That is wild!

Ditto! I also don't miss having stuff taken from my shower basket (just because you want to try my $25 conditioner and it's on the rack in the bathroom with everyone else's shower baskets doesn't mean you can have it); having to eat a meal at noon and 5PM; having weekly Sunday night meetings; having to share a room with someone else; people's loud music and drama; boy hours and dry housing rules!

Awww. I know this was awhile ago but yay for my sisters back in the day! Hehe. :)

I miss it ALL!!!!

All of you make valid points... The parking, the tests, the food.

BUT, I still think I would go back in a second and take all of that over this crappy working for a living thing. :p

AOIIalum 08-08-2005 03:34 PM

I don't miss going to class.

I also don't miss registration, especially when the one class you need is cancelled or rescheduled to another semester.

I don't miss being broke all the time and trying to work when I could fit it around insane class schedules and sorority meetings.

I don't miss getting caught in the elements while walking all over campus.

I don't miss commuting for my entire collegiate experience and dealing with curfews at home, etc.

Having said that, I'm crazy enough that if I could go back 22 years and do it all over again, I just might. Maybe.

Munchkin03 08-08-2005 06:47 PM

1. CHAPTER MEETINGS.
2. Paying dues ($25 a year is waaaay better than $300/semester.)
3. Wearing flip flops in the shower
4. Having to swipe a card to get into a building.
5. Having to sign guests into your building.
6. FINALS.

aggieAXO 08-09-2005 04:57 AM

no money
writer's cramp
parking (thank goodness the vet. school had its own parking lot)
living in College Station (Austin is much prettier)
not being able to take vacations in the middle of spring or fall, now I can take off whenever I want (and have money to do it)

ShyViolet 08-15-2005 09:18 PM

1. Exams
2. Chapter Dues (ours weren't too bad, but it's nice having the extra money)
3. Departmental drama (there's not as much as at my undergrad uni)

I have found that most of the undergraduate drama is still present at the postgraduate level, and I'm sure it'll be there when I finally enter into academia proper after my PhD. C'est la vie.

Pearls4Life 08-20-2005 12:53 AM

Good One

I miss those rude a$$ people in administration at TSU, Tennessee State University! Lawd they would make me wanna catch a case.

I also miss being on the yard skipping class for dumb stuff like hanging in the student union game room....dam# I was silly! I wasted time. :D

ZTAngel 08-22-2005 01:51 PM

I don't miss:

- Coming home from a long day at school and having to study for 3 exams I have that week
- Slackers in my groups
- Sorority house drama and gossip
- Paying $1200 a semester in dues which didn't include t-shirts, philanthropy donations, etc. Come on- we're poor college students!
- Being broke all the time
- Annoying roommates/neighbors
- Socials which required buying all new clothes for the theme or buddy socials that required buying a buddy gift
- Campus parking or lack thereof

Tom Earp 08-22-2005 06:30 PM

HMMM, Actually, I wish I was still there. Beats hell of working and being there at 7:00 every Day!

Ask Your GLO how Much Risk Management Costs today?

Raises the Heck out of Dues!

Dealing with Financial Aid

IluvSirFidel 10-04-2005 01:30 AM

Ugh...I miss college sooo much, and what sucks is that all the stuff I don't miss I'm still dealing with cause I'm in med school.

For example:

1) Studying for an Organic test when there's a swap....(Oh, wait, I study even more now....social life, what?)

2) Looooong chapter meetings (ooohhh....even longer classes and study groups.....)

3) Terrible parking (I go to school in downtown Memphis. Nuff said)

4) Ditto on the people taking your shower stuff. But that doesn't happen anymore.

5) Trying to persuade my sorority sisters to come hang out at my boyfriends fraternity house (They were a smaller not-as-cool house. But I loved them!!)

acuisla 10-04-2005 10:14 AM

I don't miss
--buying groceries on $40/week (hello, ramen!)
--bitchy roommates
--my parents holding the purse-strings (probably the biggest thing!)
--professors who gave grades based only on the comprehensive final exam (I'm not *that* much of a masochist!)
--paying dues
--being clueless about the world

KillarneyRose 11-20-2005 01:32 PM

I most definitely do not miss not having two nickels to rub together.

In fact, my best friend was up here a few weeks ago to run in the Marine Corps marathon and we met up to shop at Pentagon City and as we were wandering through the mall she said, "Remember how a bunch of us used to hit the stores before every mixer to find new outfits?" (she and I weren't close friends until my senior year) and I just looked at her and said, "Are you nuts? I was one of those people who had one cute outfit and wore it at every mixer for a year!"

texas*princess 11-20-2005 02:06 PM

- 8 am classes
- annoying roommates
- raising tuition rates
- paying a ton for a little itty bitty textbook
- paying an arm & leg for parking
- having to work all the time to pay sorority dues and trying to balance work with school/sorority and still being broke (One of the MAJOR things I love about being out of college is the grown up paychecks! :D )
- petty drama and trying to always stay out of it
- professors that sound like the Clear Eyes commercial guy
- waking up at 6 am to be one of the first people to register so the critical classes wouldn't be full
- certain people bitching that everyone needed to pay the large chapter dues and then making everything mandatory so that no one had time to WORK to get money to pay the dues and them not understanding that not every college kid has everything handed to them by mommy & daddy. hehehe sorry but that one I just never understood !

Daylong hangovers
Lethargy

A Random DphiE 01-18-2006 09:21 PM

finals & research papers [aka allnighters]

the ironic part is that i'm going back to all of that... [grad school]

KSigkid 01-26-2006 11:02 AM

I don't miss trying to hold down a job, a babysitting business, while still trying to do well in school. Adding fraternity business on top of that, I remember why I didn't sleep all that much.

Honeykiss1974 01-26-2006 12:15 PM

~the food
~the parking
~the financial aid department staff
~dorm hours (we had curfew and "visiting hours" for members of the opposite ex)
~mid-terms and finals

Tom Earp 01-26-2006 05:05 PM

WHOA, You are not still in school? You are Not a COED anymore!

Dang, I am and have been looking for A Younger Women from Kansas where Peeps are Sane!

What is funny, when I had 2 roomates and We had an Apt. above a House, We went to the Grocers Weekly and bought what We were going to eat for the Week. Damn, We did eat good!:D

Never heard of Raymond Noodles and was below our standards of dining!:D

Oh, Fried Chicken, mashed taters and White Gravy. Potatoe salad, BBQ Beans, Bean Salad, Roasts, Fish, Salads, Hot Dogs maybe once a month, burgers the same. Fish, Mac & Cheese with Tuna and other meals!

We never told anyone what We had as We were Frugal with Cash for Food!:D

Honeykiss1974 01-26-2006 05:29 PM

LOL Oh gosh no. I graduated from college in '97.

Hey wait! It just accured to me that my ten year college reunion is next year. - That should be fun. I'm sure me and my friends could come up with tons of stuff to add to this list

ADPi Conniebama 01-26-2006 06:27 PM

I do not miss . . . wondering if I would get asked to the "insert fraternity here", " insert fraternity party here" (i.e. EX derby days date party)
I do not miss . . . not making any money but wanting everything.
I do not miss . . . having all of the time in the world but not knowing to appreciate it.
I do not miss. . . being single.
I do not miss. . . dorm rooms . . . I do miss the chapter room.
I do not miss . . . "Power hungry professors." I mean come on give me the homework and back off. I didn't enjoy the unnecessary pressure of some lame paper just to prove that I could finish something. . . I guess that doesn't explain my disdain appropriately but you might know what I mean.
I do miss - spell check yea why doesnt greekchat have spell check.

xo_sue 01-27-2006 01:27 PM

-trying to find a date for the formal
-seeing someone on campus wearing my clothes (we left doors unlocked so your closet was up for grabs)
-electing new officers (too uncomfortable trying to pick between sisters)

But...I'd do it all over again in a New York minute!!! :)

I don't missed shared showers and having to wear shower shoes

Tickled Pink 2 02-27-2006 10:53 PM

1. Being hungry or broke or both most of the time.
2. Roommates who talk on the phone all night when you have a class at 7:45 am.
3. Classes that start at 7:45 am that you have to take becuase you need the credits.
4. Band practices where you have to crab walk, run around the University at 5 am in the morning, or practice/ march in 95 degree heat.
5. Drunk roommates who throw up all over the floor.
6. Loooooooooooong registration lines.
7. Nasty cafeteria food.
8. Working in the cafe so you get to see what they put IN the NASTY cafeteria food.
9. I also hated shower shoes & sharing showers with other women.
10. PANTY RAIDS (but our retaliation JOCKEY raids were fun, though :D ).

A Random DphiE 02-28-2006 12:02 PM

parking tickets

I suppose the thing I don't miss was the ever recurring question of whether my BAC or my GPA would be higher for the semester.

Tom Earp 02-28-2006 11:43 PM

Actually, I miss nothing, wish I was still there.

Early riser, had all classes in the AM! Started a Local that took a lot of time and fun to do and be with My Brothers.

But, in to days economy, the costs are going up and is harder to keep up even though money was tough back when. Hell, I worked in a dorm washing, waxing and polishing floors, but used it to keep My dancing skills up!:D

Law class was another situation. But dringking with Profs and flying with one. Good Times.

Hell, even ate well, not dorm food visa a vi! We cooked, boy did We cook! Oh, food to!;)

Advice, stay in school, I did until I got Married!
