KiwiJuice08's Fall '05 Rush Thread!!

Well, recruitment is still a ways away, but I thought I would start my thread now! (Actually, I'm at work and I thought this would be a great way to procrastinate hehe). I'm rushing at a big midwestern school with lots of houses! I haven't quite thought of names for them yet, but I will do that sometime in the near future. I am super excited for rush, and as much as I'm loving my summer vacation, I kinda wish it was time to head down to school!! I am registered for recruitment, am in the process of getting all of my recs together, and all that's left to do is find something to wear to each event! Well, I suppose I should get back to work. I'll update soon!!

copacabana 07-18-2005 12:41 PM

Yaay another rush thread!! We're both rushing Fall '05 (though I'm in Cali, see my thread for details). Best of luck with everything:)

Jill1228 07-18-2005 12:54 PM

ASUADPi 07-19-2005 12:06 AM

Woo hoo to rush season starting up again!!! My addiction is getting some "food" LOL.

I hope you have a wonderful time going through rush. Keep an open mind and remember to just be yourself :)

KiwiJuice08 07-19-2005 12:29 PM

Names

Ok, so I have decided on names for all of the houses. I am naming them after famous showjumping horses, because I am an equestrian :-) In no particular order...

Gem Twist
Calypso
Untouchable
Touch Of Class
Royal Kaliber
Authentic
Sapphire
Casanova
Clasiko
Judgement
Nick of Diamonds
Fleur
Special Envoy
Stardust
Taylor Made
Fantasia
Oberon
Tom Boy
Bianca

Whew! Lots of houses!!

copacabana 07-19-2005 01:39 PM

Wow those are such cool names! Haha I always love how creative the names of horses are:)

ASUADPi 07-19-2005 03:09 PM

rooting for Nick of Diamonds, since you know our badge is a Diamond and we ADPi's kind of like diamonds :D

twhrider13 07-19-2005 04:13 PM

I love the names for the houses! I show Tennessee Walking Horses, and even though it's a whole different ballgame than show jumping, I still love all horse-related competitions. Your names for sororities are much better than mine would have been, though, had I named them for World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horses. There are 5 sororities on my campus, so I would have had things like Cash For Keeps ('00 WGC), Pride's Jubilee Encore ('01 WGC), Out On Parole ('02 WGC), The Whole Nine Yards ('03 WGC), and The Black Night Shade ('04 WGC). The sad thing is, those are some of the better TWH names! :D

Anyway, enough about horses. Best of luck with recruitment! Be prepared to get some odd looks when you mention that you ride horses, though. Or to hear things like, "Oh, my grandfather's cousin's ex husband let me ride one of his horses when I was 3!" LOL! It's something that kind of throws people off. I'll definitely be following this thread because I want to see how a fellow horse person fares. Good luck!

KiwiJuice08 07-21-2005 10:46 AM

hehe, I know what you mean about people being thrown off by the riding thing! Whenever I tell people, they are like "Oh! I've gone on trails before!!" I'm like, umm, not quite the same!! People really don't understand the concept of competitive riding!! Oh well. Thanks for all the good luck wishes everyone!! I can't wait to start posting exciting things about recruitment...just a little over a month!

I bought a dress for second invite!! It's pretty - light yellow, lacey overlay (kinda, don't know how to explain it) strapless. It's definitely cute and very proper looking! :-) Now I just need to find cute shoes and accessories to go with it, my pref dress, and my first invite outfit!

blueangel 07-21-2005 06:26 PM

As a fellow equestrian, I'm loving this thread even more!

BTW: I show hunter/jumpers

:D

KiwiJuice08 07-21-2005 09:25 PM

Me too!! How long have you rode hunter/jumpers?

my favorites

OK I am for Sapphire and Nick of Diamonds. (for the same reason as ASUADPi)

HAVE A GREAT TIME.

I love recruitment threads. (I think yours are the most unusual "house" names, way to be unique)

JKWildcat 07-22-2005 11:51 PM

hhaha those were great names! Good luck with rush from another fellow rusher and equestrian. ;)

neonsparkles 07-23-2005 03:38 AM

My big sis would LOVE your thread! She is on the equestrian team and has been riding forever! I still know nothing about horses and have never ridden one, but hopefully someday I will!

Anyway good luck on recruitment! I'm also in the Mid-West and I have to say the weather is usually pretty great for fall recruitment! The worst might be a little rain, but its not as hot as other parts of the country!

smiley21 07-23-2005 04:11 PM

can you tell us when recruitment is?

blueangel 07-23-2005 05:59 PM

I've only been riding for five years. Judo was my sport, but I destroyed my knees.... and riding is perfect! I just do local shows... I'm not that good, still just doing the low verticles... but I enjoy it! And of course, I love horses. I love just to be around them. I love the smell of hay and horse-poop. Somebody outta bottle that! LOL!

How about you... how long have you been riding?

KiwiJuice08 07-23-2005 07:00 PM

Recruitment begins the beginning of the 2nd week in September, and a week and a half later is bid day!

I started riding when I was in 1st grade, and I rode hunter/jumpers on the A-circuit up through High School - I was actually on my way to junior olympics when the week before we were supposed to leave, my horse injured herself and we found out she had navicular disease - definitely put my riding career on hold!! I quit for a few years, but I've been getting back into it and I'm joining the equestrian team down at school, so we'll see what happens!

haha I agree! Well, not about the bottling it part hehe, but there is something about the smell of a stable! My boyfriend thinks I'm weird, he thinks that horse stables smell like cow manure lol...but I don't think so. Horses have a different smell, and something about it will always make me feel like I'm at home! But maaaaybe that's because I spent most of my life at the stable :-)

blueangel 07-23-2005 09:36 PM

OK, I think that's amazing! You were in the A-circuit! <bowing down ala Garth and Wayne> I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy! :)

I know I'll never be great at riding, because I don't have that long, lean body that most riders have (I know, I know...my trainer keeps telling me about... Ann Kozinsky (spelling?). I have short legs and I'm not at all flexible. I have a tough time keeping my heels down because my calves are so stiff!

But, funny story... I started riding when I was 5. They put me right on horses (not ponies!!!) and never on a lunge line. Needless to say, I fell a lot.. and I developed a REAL fear of riding.. especially cantering.

So... when I became an adult, I decided that I was going to get over that fear. I just wanted to take lessons long enough so that I could finally canter. Then I was going to stop.. mission accomplished.

Well... little did I know that I was going to love it so much. The first time I cantered it was the most amazing feeling in the world! Not only had I conquered a fear I had for so many years, but it was really FUN!

Who would'a thunk I'd be jumping now! And... I even took a few indoor polo lessons. Now THAT'S hard!!! I think that's going to be my next endeavor.

I'm so jealous that your school has an equestrian team. That is so fabulous!

honeychile 07-23-2005 09:53 PM

My sister-in-law does dressage! I had no idea how many horse-people were on GC!

Good luck, KiwiJuice!

My school has this equestrian program, where, as I understand it, most/all of the tuition is paid for.
Also, the students get special consideration (like if they need to take a semester off to compete), and they get an internship with the Kentucky Horse Park.
From what I understand, it is a really good program.

KiwiJuice08 07-23-2005 11:55 PM

I'm definitely excited to get on the team! I can't wait to be back in the saddle on a regular basis :-) There is nothing like the feeling of being on top of a 1,200 lb animal while it's soaring over 6 foot fences...although I don't think I'll be doing much of that at school - I think they stick more to the hunters (3-3.5 ft usually) than the fast paced jumpers, but we'll see!

JKWildcat 07-24-2005 12:22 AM

I also did the A shows.. Until about a year ago I was showing a handful of horses every weekend.. But I quit, and now I miss it so much! My plan was for me to finsh my undergrad, go to law school, make enough money to pay for a super nice horse and be able to fly on the weekends to go horse show. However, I can't wait that long so I will be trying out for my schools equestrian team.. Should be a blast!

It is strange how many of us there are on GC. ;)

KiwiJuice08 07-24-2005 01:08 AM

One of the guys that I grew up riding against, is one of the top ranked grand prix riders right now...really makes me angry that I quit when my horse got injured!! Oh well. My goal is to compete through the rest of college, and when i have the means to compete full time again, I would like to try and get back up to the grand prix circuit. I know I could do it if I had the time and money, when I was 11 I was one of the top ranked junior riders, but after Beauty (haha yea..that was her name. Original right?) hurt herself, we just didn't have the 250 grand my coach wanted my dad to drop on another horse lol. Why does riding have to be the most expensive sport EVER?!?

Xylochick216 07-24-2005 10:01 AM

Good luck with recruitment :) (I know nothing about horses so I can't really contribute to the convo!)

KiwiJuice08 07-26-2005 12:37 PM

Well nothing too exciting to update, but I have all of my outfits together for rush!! I bought the cuuuuutest skirt last week (for first round), it's a little more on the dressy side, but I'm going to dress it down with a cute tank and strappy sandals. For second round I have my cute yellow sundress, and for pref a cute black dress. I wasn't sure if it was appropriate or not, but I talked to my bf's sister who just graduated from my school and she said it would be perfect! Sooo, now all i need to do is find a cute pair of shoes to go with the sundress and find jewelry!!

On a side note, John Mayer pre-sale tix went on sale today at 11 and I was buying for 2 shows - one of which sold out before 11:01!! Hopefully I can get them on Saturday when the go on sale to the public! I've been waiting 2 years to see that man back on stage - John has got to be my most favorite person in the world! lol...I could listen to him on repeat for the rest of my life and never get sick of him :-) So wish me luck!!

Well, I'm running a little late on the horse discussion, but I had to add this! I've always wanted to jump, be it hunter or jumper, but all I've ever owned are Tennessee Walking Horses--show Walking Horses, I mean--and you don't do anything (and I mean anything!) that might throw their action and consistency in their gaits off. But I know exactly what you mean about the "feeling" of soaring, even though mine is a different type. To me, there's nothing in the world like being on a REAL performance TWH. Your booty is only about two or three feet off the ground, you can see the horse's entire leg about four feet off the ground, including the top of the foot (chain, package, and all), from the saddle, and you have to keep your body back so you don't get popped in the face with that deep-shaking head. It's like straddling a rocket with all that power, although it's the most beautiful thing to me. Nothing on earth like it! :D

Ok, I'll stop waxing romantic about my Walking Horses. Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Buttonz 07-27-2005 06:18 PM

Good luck! I used to ride trails and stuff almost every weekend, I miss it so much!

epchick 07-28-2005 11:13 AM

That's awesome that your an equestrian!! I love riding horses, but there really is no place for equestrians in my city.

Good luck during Rush!! I know its a little premature, but i'm already rooting for Bianca (that's my best friends name) and Gem Twist! lol.

copacabana 07-28-2005 01:16 PM

Haha, I think I'll root for either Touch of Class or Casanova...what cool names!:D

Lily1909 07-28-2005 07:41 PM

Best of luck with recruitment! Have a great time!

KiwiJuice08 07-30-2005 05:18 PM

Just a little over 2 weeks until I move down to school!! and just a few more weeks after that until recruitment begins! I am so excited, I just wish it were closer and that I had more exciting things to update on! I've been trying to get all of my recs together, and while I have some, I am not having the best luck. I contacted our local pahellenic president and she said that they closed down a couple of years ago due to lack of membership, but that she would help me secure some recs if I sent her my info...so I did. I have not heard back from her and I tried calling, but have been unable to reach her :-( Well nothing more to update for now

I saw him a couple of years ago in Houston.... GREAT show!!!!

Oh, and if you see him live, notice how he "bounces" when he's singing.... Kinda weird (actually alot weird), but when you're that cute you can get away with it. :p

And good luck with rush!!! That is ALOT of houses!!!!!

I'm not sure if you want to say where you're going to school (understandable if you don't), but it seems to me like it would be one of those big southern schools.

*Makes note to check rush schedules*

GOOD LUCK!!!

EDIT: I have one possible idea of what the school might be, but I could easily be wrong. Haha

He is so funny when he sings!! This will be my 5th John concert...I must say he has gotten better about controlling the crazy faces he makes when he's playing guitar but not singing. So excited for the concert! But it is the saturday after bid day...so I'm hoping it doesn't conflict with anything :crosses fingers:

KiwiJuice08 08-21-2005 07:47 PM

Ok - a little pre-rush update!!

I moved down to school on Wednesday and I have just been getting settled in to my apt and getting acclimated to campus. Super excited for rush to begin...just under 3 weeks! That seems so far away! :-( I am glad that we have 2 weeks to get settled into classes before all the craziness of rush begins though. The weather here has been miserably hot since wednesday, and I'm hoping that it cools off a little bit before rush...otherwise I foresee a hot, sticky, gross first day of rush! Well, not much more to tell at the moment.
