Your City's Official Nickname?

Does the place where you currently reside have an official nickname or a certain meaning? If so, what is it?

CrimsonTide4 07-14-2005 06:26 PM

Charlotte = The Queen City

Named after Queen Charlotte, a Black queen who was also German. She gave birth to 13 kids (or was it 15 or 17? -- I need to look at her statue).

Wonderful1908 07-14-2005 07:13 PM

Houston= Bayou City

Obviously lots of bayous.

AGDLynn 07-14-2005 07:21 PM

Newnan - City of Homes

preciousjeni 07-14-2005 07:45 PM

I don't live there anymore but --

Athens, Georgia = "The Classic City" (named after Athens in Greece, I believe)

NiaX 07-14-2005 07:48 PM

Louisville,KY = Derby City

Home of the KY Derby

RedefinedDiva 07-14-2005 08:06 PM

New Orleans is called "The Big Easy" because everything is slow and easy-going. It is also called the "Crescent City" because of the crescent of the Mississippi River.

Albany, GA : The Good Life City  (so not true!)

Atlanta, GA: Hot Lanta ( because it is such a "hot" place to be I guess) or The City too Busy to Hate. Coined by the Editor of the Atlanta Journal or Constituation (when they were separate papers) Henry Grady during the Civil Rights Movement. Atlanta is actually looking for a "brand" right now. There is a committee for it and everything.

Edited to correct the name of the editor. I thought it was Ralph McGill, but it was Henry Grady

Gina1201 07-14-2005 08:56 PM

Syracuse, NY~ The Salt City

Salt was discovered in several swamps in Syracuse, which brought more settlers to the area, and eventually gave the city the nickname "Salt City".

soft&beautiful 07-14-2005 08:57 PM

Detroit=Motown or Motor City, made popular by Barry Gordy.

DW08 07-14-2005 09:07 PM

Windy City=Chicago

Because of the shear off of the lake, and its very accurate. In the winter, you can get your coat blown off and that hawk makes it feel a full 10-20 degrees colder.

pretty edAKAted 07-14-2005 09:36 PM

Mississippi - "The Delta" (where i am from originally);

And no, we do not still ride to school on cows nor does everyone pick cotton as a favorite past time. We don't run from KKK's and yes we are still kountry as before with a whole lotta southern hospitality! :)

(believe it or not people still ask these questions)
:D

*Steppin' up to the plate - clearing throat - "Ahem"

You done started it now.

Your city is called the Queen City (of the West). It was founded in 1788.

Charlotte, NC was founded in the 1750s - making us the first Queen City. Now you don't want none!

:p :p :p

But, what I found interesting about Cincinnati's history was that it was an important stop in the Underground Railroad.:)

PREACH!!!

Although their city is the QUEEN betwixt the 2 of police brutality cases.

Plus, Charlotte had its own gold rush BEFORE San Francisco. I learned that 2 years ago on my Black History tour of Charlotte. Charlotte also had its own declaration of independence before Thomas Jefferson sat and wrote his. :D

Y'all betta RECK ON EYES!!!

Soror, I went to this event and someone who was recounting Chicago's history said that the Windy City was a term used to describe all of the hot air blown by the politicians waaay back in the day. I'm thinking ok, this person has not felt "the hawk."

Ok, just moved here so I'm not sure. Sorors Abaici and Steeltrap may have to help me.

Los Angeles - City of Angels :)

I don't think that it's historical. I think that that is actually the translation from Spanish. Not sure.

So, if so, Los Angeles has the distinction of being the only city in our poll so far that is actually the same as its nickname - albeit in another language I guess. Na na na na na. LOL

funny how you got specifics on Cincy, but Charlotte is the "1750s"...yeah right! lol. But I was raised not to fights females, so I'm sure WenD08 will handle this "neophyte uprising" ^^ when she gets back. :)

You're right on Cincy's Underground RR legacy....and I hear that Harriet Tubman may have owned a condo there at one point. :p

someone earlier had asked about the "Glass City?" I think that is Toledo.

preciousjeni 07-15-2005 02:28 PM

Another Georgia one:

Madison - "The Town That Didn't Burn" (I guess more what it's known as than an official nickname)

Backstory: When Sherman came through on his "March to the Sea" during the War Between the States, he ordered his army to burn everything in sight including buildings, crops, tools, etc.

As the army neared Madison, Senator Joshua Hill went out and met with the officers, explaining to them that Madison carried no strategic benefit. Hill and the commanding officer made a deal that the only building to be burned would be the Town Depot to appease Sherman. But, all the other buildings, home and crops were left standing, untouched. The army then formed two sections and marched around the perimeter of the city, burning everything just outside the boundaries.

Every other indication of civilization on that March to the Sea was destroyed until the army reached Savannah. Sherman did not burn Savannah, but instead wrote a letter to President Lincoln stating that he was offering the city, unblemished, as a Christmas gift.

Because Madison was saved, my family home (known as the Atkinson Brick House) is one of only two intact Greek revival homes in the state of Georgia - and it is the only ante-bellum home with a raised dining room (split floor) and indoor basement kitchen.

*Gasp* No he didn't...

"Neophyte"??? What's that riff about???

"Not to fight females..." ? Hmph. I however make no such gender exclusions - *DE/tickledpink rolls up sleeves, takes off earrings, reaches into bag and pulls out the jar of Vaseline...* http://www.websmileys.com/sm/fingers/fing23.gif

Here's the website:

A couple of other websites also state "around, or about" (poor record keeping? - who knows...http://www.websmileys.com/sm/sad/533.gif) - but we still got you by about 30 some years. :p :)

Bethlehem, PA - The Christmas City

WenD08 07-15-2005 04:13 PM

okay, let's BOTH be Queens (first this and then the Wright Bros., why the battle between OH and NC?:p)
not Harriet w/the condo on the Ohio...:D speaking of the Underground Railroad, this is Margaret Garner Week in Cincinnati where the Opera based on her life has premiered, Soror Toni Morrison is here to see her work, just a lotta good stuff this weekend. b/c of the Freedom Center (you might've seen it on TV, Oprah was at the opening and everything:p) and how it shows Cincinnati as a stop along the road to freedom, we're kinda popular w/history buffs, like me.
maybe we should change the unofficial name...

Kimmie1913 07-15-2005 04:50 PM

Baltimore, MD- Charm City

I believe this was coined by the mayor, later Governor and current comptroller William Donald Schaeffer around the time Baltimore's inner harbor opened and increased tourism because he believed Baltimore to be charming! It is often referred to as a great big small town in terms of its pace and character.

On a side note- the sisterly affection of Phly's moniker always creeps me out. I mean "City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection" just has a connotation to me that is not good.
