I am excited, but hope the actors are as good on screen as they were in the theatre. There is a big difference in technique.

Some can do it, others can't.

Jill1228 07-09-2005 08:03 PM

I have watched the trailer 525,600 times :D and I am so stoked!

RedMusiq4U 07-09-2005 08:44 PM

I'll definitely go see it since I haven't able to go and see the Broadway version :( ........

lauralaylin 07-09-2005 08:44 PM

The trailer was unbelievable. I knew nothing at all of Rent before it, but after it played my friend and I looked at each other amazed. It looks just amazing!

I heard it's the original cast. Is that the true original cast or the original Broadway cast? I'm guessing it's the latter since a lot of those people are really famous now.

Jill1228 07-09-2005 09:35 PM

It is most of the original cast (ie original broadway cast)

Rosario Dawson is taking over the lead, and Tracie Thoms (Wonderfalls) is taking over for Joanne. Everyone else is from the original cast

Especially since Rent is not the normal musical, its a rock opera so EVERYTHING is sung, and therefore the animation and expressions and choreography are completely different from the approach they are going with the movie. Which I like, cause afterall, its a new direction, so where would be the art in mocking something that is already done. I heartily believe that the director is still staying true to Jonathon Larson, so the movie should rock.

OMG the trailer made me cry.

But I don't recall Jesse L. Martin (L&O) being in the original cast of Rent but that was definately him in the trailer.

It was cool seeing Taye Diggs though.

OMG I cannot wait. Does anyone know the release date? All the trailer said was this fall.

edit:
Never mind answered my own question, according to the site the movie opens 11/11/05. A week before Harry Potter.

ASUADPi 07-10-2005 01:33 PM

Check out the site. It gives a listing of how many minutes there are until the movie opens. Clever.

Jill1228 07-10-2005 01:44 PM

Jesse...damn what a fine man!
Yes, we was in the original cast of Rent. Tom...Collins :)

He is, isn't he!!!!

When I checked out the official site I read the biography of Jesse and it stated that he was the original Tom Collins. I think I need to go find my RENT CD. :)

Is it November yet? All the good movies come out in November.

a.e.B.O.T. 07-10-2005 06:30 PM

Am I the only person that think Rent is overrated? The libretti is a mess. The ending was a cop out. I still don't know how it won the Pulitzer.

DeltAlum 07-11-2005 09:13 AM

Sorry,

I saw it twice -- NY & Denver -- and really liked it both times.

I would tend to agree with you, but it's one of those shows I like in spite of its shortcomings.

moe.ron 07-11-2005 10:03 AM

Music wise, it was alright. Lots of catchy tunes that get stuck in your head. I feel that the complete package isn't the greatest. I hope the movie does well because it will pave the way for other musical movies.

Not unlike La Bohème, actually -- a fairly weak story/libretto held together by some great music.

Exactly, when Daphne came back to life, I was like WTF? Like I said, the ending was a cop out.

a.e.B.O.T. 07-11-2005 03:14 PM

Its not a cop out. There isnt suppose to be a big finish. Its year in the life sort of thing. It ended cause youve seen a year... secondly, we have seen several copy cats or close doings to Rent, but 10 years ago, this was some hot new shit going on, especially for everything else the early 90s put out.

Sorry but I'm a stickler, it's Mimi not Daphne.

Oops, sorry bout this. You guys might appreciate this from Forbidden Broadway:

THIS AIN'T BOHEME

Quote:

ALL
This ain't Boheme!
This ain't Boheme!
This ain't Boheme!
MARK
There was a guy named Giacomo
Who wrote an opera long ago.
"Boheme," it remains;
"La Boheme," we obliterate.
As we go against the grain,
You'll go insane and we're glad.
Did I mention the tension
And moves from fifth dimension?
We're starving for attention,
Full of pretension,
Need intervention.
A convention of spoiled 20-somethings going mad.
Precocious, obnoxious
Kids re-inventing hair,
And Cher! and Vanity Fair!
Aren't we cute, to boot?
Here, the grungies hoot!
We're such a famous fad!
We aren't the Met! Forget
That musical gem!
ALL
This ain't Boheme!
Yeah!
The songs!
MARK
It's rock! It's ultra-bluesy!
Gold McDermott! Lizzie Swedos!
MAUREEN
Stevie Wonder! Leonard Bernstein!
Then Puccini! Sondheim! Sweeney!
ALL
Style!
ROGER
It's styled completely wild!
Hand-held mikes and facial fakers!
MIMI
Dingy lighting! Metal platforms!
Children raging! Messy staging!
ALL
Plot!
Prostitution! No solution!
Some pollution!
Generation X! Encounter!
Counter-revolution!
Everyone has lost their voice, it's true!
(variously)
I have! And me! And me! And me!
(in unison)
And you, you and you!
It's actors screaming and belching and screaming but
Not reaching any high notes!
MARK
So if some patrons quake with fear
Let's remind all of them:
ALL
This ain't Boheme!
This ain't Boheme!
This ain't Boheme!
This ain't Boheme!
This ain't Boheme!
MARK (over the above)
But now that we are the mainstream,
What is out of the mainstream?
How do we offend?
What's the new trend?
We need a show! A new show!
The opposite of "RENT" ain't "Boheme";
It's Oklahoma!
ALL
Yeah...
It's Oklahoma!
It's Oklahoma!
It's Oklahoma!
O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A!
Viva la...
Oklahoooooooma! YO!

(Groan from Daphne Rubin-Vega)
("Musetta's Waltz" plays)
ANTHONY
Close-up on Daphne, now dying from exhaustion after doing "RENT" for only six months! Will Adam be able to revive her with his new hit song?
ADAM
Daphne!
DAPHNE
Moo!
ALL
She's back!
DAPHNE
I swear, I died! I was goin' through a tunnel--the Lincoln Tunnel, I think--goin' towards a warm white light, leavin' dingy New York for good.
ALL
Oh my God!
DAPHNE
And I swear, I saw an angel in gold lame and she looked like...Lady Tiang, from "The King and I". And she said:
LADY TIANG
Go back! Go back home to Broadway. It isn't dead, yet.
ADAM
Wow...
ANTHONY
Hey! According to the "Boheme" libretto, you're not supposed to come back! You're supposed to be dead!
DAPHNE
Yeah, but...
ALL
This ain't Boheme!
This ain't Boheme!
This ain't Boheme!
