Birds are crazy in chicago too, they'll fly right into you if you're walking by the lake.

Same here. I'm always scared that someone will push me onto the tracks, and that's not just in NYC, but any city with a subway system.

omegamcgee 07-06-2005 09:19 AM

I'm scared of ET. Yeah, like the movie alien. I hate his glowy fingers so much that I couldn't sleep with a nightlight when I was little, because it looked like them. I have a big theory about why ET is scary, not harmless like everyone thought (it was a trick, man!), but everyone just laughs at me.

I also really hate birds, and get scared when they are all around me. Ick.

Sister Havana 07-06-2005 09:26 AM

One word: NEEDLES.

tunatartare 07-06-2005 09:49 AM

Mushrooms.

A lot of people always make fun of me for it, but it's honestly like my biggest fear. I can't look at them, touch them, taste them, smell them, etc.

33girl 07-06-2005 09:51 AM

Bats.

I'm also scared of being on a hill in a car, having it conk out and go backwards down the hill. This was a nightmare I had constantly when I was younger.

I'm not afraid of mushrooms, but I find them absolutely disgusting. I will sit there for hours just picking mushrooms out of food. If I see one in a meal I freak out.

I'm terrified of heights. Especially bridges over water.

non-greek newby 07-06-2005 09:57 AM

 Chucky, Big Rollercoasters, and Very Deep Water.

Lady Pi Phi 07-06-2005 09:59 AM

Oh, and I wanted to add that Sponge Bob Square Pants freaks me out.

GreenKappa 07-06-2005 10:02 AM

parking garages always freak me out at night...

treblk 07-06-2005 10:24 AM

Scared of heights
scared of snakes

I can not watch scary movies by myself and at night, it's over for me, I won't be able to sleep. I have to watch those movies during the day, so that I can do something else to not think about the movie:(

TNPhiMu 07-06-2005 10:33 AM

#1---> SNAKES... I don't like 'em, in any form or fashion. BLAH!

#2---> going down ladders. I'm not scared of heights, and going up ladders doesn't bother me a bit... but I HATE going down ladders!

honeychile 07-06-2005 10:43 AM

I'm not "afraid" of a lot of things, but a LOT of things gross me out to the nth degree. At the top of that list is monkeys - blech.

xo_kathy 07-06-2005 10:47 AM

Cockroaches and wasps

Things under water - suken ships, large logs, etc. I was able to go snorkeling in Hawaii and it was pretty cool. But then this school of fish decided I was their leader and started following me and I freaked.

The dark - still sleep with a light on when I'm by myself

recentASAalum 07-06-2005 10:49 AM

I'm really afraid of getting stung by some kind of insect... which is weird cuz needles don't bother me... and this is some kind of fear I've developed in the past couple years...

I'm also afraid of walls of water... like in Titanic there is a scene where water just crashes and washes over the camera... I couldn't watch the movie because of that... the idea of it just scares the bejeesus out of me!!!!

An ex of mine was afraid of monkeys, not big gorillas, mind you, the little ones. I teased him mercilessly about it. They can be kinda creepy though, I dont' like that noises they make.

I am afraid of insects they are DISGUSTING and Pigeons are on my list too.
They like to nest on my neighbor's back door that opens out onto the landing that we share. You have to walk out there to get to the laundry area and more than once I opened the door to the laundry and one came flying out at me == shivers== YUCKY rats with wings.

ADqtPiMel 07-06-2005 11:43 AM

I'm terrified of heights and - don't laugh - standard poodles. OMGWTFBBQ THEY ARE SO FREAKY.

mu_agd 07-06-2005 11:47 AM

Heights and mice.

Rio_Kohitsuji 07-06-2005 12:09 PM

I'm not really scared of objects or animals, but I'm terrified of failure.

Oh....and those friggin' weird bird-monkeys from the Wizard of Oz...

greeklawgirl 07-06-2005 12:12 PM

I am terrified of snakes. I don't trust anything on dry land that does not naturally have appendages to move with. Come to think of it, eels scare the daylights out of me too.

Jill1228 07-06-2005 12:48 PM

Needles (I scream and hyperventilate), rodents, snakes, deep water, big assed bridges over deep water (ie Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel), disgusting insects (roaches and palmetto bugs), horror flicks, sharks (hell, with the recent news...who wouldn't be?)

I am scared of thrill rides (ie roller coasters) but I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE them...
I never met a coaster I didn't like (unless it was a wussy one)
Sistermadly knows I can holler with the best of them! :D

SigmaChiCard 07-06-2005 01:10 PM

snakes...i hate them i hate them i hate them
spiders...not as much anymore...but arachnaphobia gave me the phobia
crazy clowns...just a little bit...if it weren't for Stephen King's "IT" or Amsterdam where I was experiencing Amsterdam life when after midnight I was walking along a deserted alleyway when a clown on Stilts came running by

PoohsHoneyBee 07-06-2005 01:12 PM

i am afraid of roaches, mice, rats, frogs, snakes, scary movies, spiders, spider webs, aliens and just about anything that crawls

KatieKate1244 07-06-2005 01:34 PM

I am terrified of knives. I hate using anything larger than a steak knife. I'm also afraid of dogs. I got attacked last summer by one, and ever since then, I just get so scared around them.

That, and as much as I love roller coasters, I'm scared to death I'm going to get stuck on one.

damasa 07-06-2005 01:48 PM

I'm scared of white people.

I dont' know why but they just kinda freak me out.

Thats also one of my fears, especially on those island like platforms. I always stand with my back against something, like a post or the wall. You always hear about the guy/girl off their meds or something who pushes someone in front of a train.

And I'm scared of robots. As an undergrad, the school always got this robot called punchy or something that someone in a corner was controling to talk and follow you around or whatever. I was PETRIFIED of that thing; we had our greek tables set up one day and as Panhel VP Recruitment, I was over talking to the Tri Sigmas. The robot came by and I JUMPED behind their table, knocking over some crafts in the process, and ducked behind their table. I was seriously on the verge of a panic attack. It was bad news.

Oh yeah, can't forget bridges. They freak me out too.

WCUgirl 07-06-2005 02:36 PM

That they're all going to laugh at me.

Okay, that's my Adam Sandler joke for the day.

My real list of fears is:

*Bees, wasps, spiders, snakes and scorpions. Okay, pretty much all ugly bugs (let's face it -- lady bugs and roly polys are cute!).
*Not necessarily heights, but being near a ledge or an edge if it's high up.
*Failure
*Needles, anything medical-related really.
*Lakes
*Uncooked chicken. Yes -- I am scared to death I'm going to get salmonella and that will cause appendicitis.
*Suffocation. I won't let anyone put anything near my face.
*Drowning. I'm scared to death that my car is going to go off the road into a large pond or body of water and I'm not going to be able to get out.
*Flying
*Elevators. I'm a bit claustrophobic, and it took me years before I finally started riding them, but only if I'm going to like the 30th floor or something unreasonable for walking.

Yes, I'm paranoid. Ask my husband.

I know I'm missing some.

UKTriDelt 07-06-2005 03:01 PM

Being ANYwhere in the dark by myself. I can't sleep with a light on, but if someone else isn't in the house with me, I get freaked out.

Walking in bodies of water. I love to be IN water, but I hate walking out into the ocean and refuse to do it in lakes or ponds. The fact that I can't see what I'm standing on and it might be a crab or slimy thing is just too much for me. I don't like pool bottoms either (even my own), because bugs or dirt or Band-aids might be on the bottom. uck

christiangirl 07-06-2005 03:40 PM

Don't laugh, but I'm deathly afraid of being buried alive. I know that the probability is low, but still...I'm not being buried when I die, I want a nice casket in a mauselium or something, but I'm not going underground and I'm not being burned to death, just in case I'm still kicking and somebody missed my pulse.

tell us what you are afraid of.

My NYC fear is falling thru those sidewalk basement hatches.
My other fears include super deep water, diving boards and pitch black darkness.

Dionysus 07-06-2005 04:22 PM

VOMITING

Death is second.

Yes, I'm that scared of vomiting - me doing it or anyone else. How am I going to have kids? :(

ms_gwyn 07-06-2005 04:52 PM

I know that I am not of afraid of death, now DYING that is a completely different issue, that may be my greatest fear, but I have to do some soul searching to really find out my greatest fear.

Spiders are just unnatural, anything with more 4 legs to me are unnatural and spiders, man YUCK! Funny thing, I really like the movie arachnaphobia, but someone has to be near me in order to watch it. Most bugs creep me out.

I am afraid of heights, I have a super sensitive stomach (it drops in elevators), but I MUST have a window seat on airplanes (in my mind its different).

On the foods, I don't like tomatos, but their by-products like sauce are good. It is getting to the point (and I noticed this today with my lunch, which I couldn't eat) cut-up tomatoes COMPLETELY freak me out, get them away from me, yuck!

kddani 07-06-2005 04:58 PM

people who use tOgGlEcAsE and netspeak... they scare me.

Also I have a weird fear of birds that developed at the 2001 KD convention when I was at Disney. I swear, the birds kept on flying out of the trees at my head and i've had this weird ass phobia ever since.

Also very claustrophobic when driving... I HATE having a truck on one side and a barrier on the other.

Susan_Renee 07-06-2005 06:04 PM

heights
and
spending the rest of my life alone

I was just thinking about that yesterday! I can't even look at mounds of things with too many legs, seeing them all wiggling at once sends me straight over the edge (like ant hills)! If it doesn't look right, I can't take it, even if I'm not scared of that particular bug (and I'm not scared of bugs really).

Has anyone ever acquired a fear, like you weren't scared of it until you met someone who was? Like I was never scared of clowns till I got to college and all the girls in my dorms would tell me horror stories of the day they became scared of clowns, now you'd think I'm Chuckie from Rugrats the way I act around pictures of clowns! Same with spiders, they were never a big deal until I met my best friend, who's scared of them. Then, suddenly soooo much was wrong with them...

sageofages 07-06-2005 06:17 PM

Consistent fears.....

I have some that kind of sneak up on me depending on the moment...

Like the inability to swim in deep open water following the viewing of Jaws.....(even lake water!)

BUT...for my consistent fears..

I CAN NOT sleep with the closet door open. It must be latched and the light inside MUST be off. I will make Mr Sageofages get up and close it if he leaves it open before coming to bed. I invariably have scary dreams when I sleep with the door open.

Being underground. I never really liked tunnels etc. Basements are borderline. When Mr Sageofages and I were dating he took me too a "wild cave" near Indiana University....I can simply say NEVER AGAIN AS LONG AS I LIVE. I dislike being underground so much, my family is instructed that I am to be cremated and scattered ABOVE ground. shudder!

Having to bury one of my children. (no embellishment necessary)

Having to bury Mr Sageofages (we can close enough to that in May that I know it is still a major fear...ptsd)

I really don't like heights very much as well.

AGDee 07-06-2005 08:14 PM

bats (since I had one in my house many years ago)

bridges (driving over them)

tornados .. this one is weird. I'm not as afraid of them as I used to be. I used to have recurrent tornado dreams that were absolutely terrifying. I used to have night terrors too about monsters that made me afraid of the basement and windows in my parents' house. In my own house now, those fears have gone away.

dying alone on a Friday night.. this one too is very strange and it started when I was really really sick with Crohn's but they didn't know what I was sick from yet. I was dizzy and weak all the time and was afraid I'd pass out and die while home alone on Friday night and nobody would know anything was wrong until I didn't show up to work on Monday. Cognitively, this makes no sense to me, because who cares what happens with my body after I'm dead? Emotionally though, this seems like a terrible thought. Which leads me to my last one...

Going to my mom's house and finding her dead. Twice in the last few months I've gotten phone calls from friends/family of my mom's saying that they haven't been able to reach her and I have had to try to track her down. Since she's homebound, she should always be there to answer the phone so people freak out if she doesn't answer right away. Anyway, that's probably my most rational fear because it's understandable to worry about a sick parent that way.

Dee

ETA: Often, like a few times a week, as I'm falling asleep, I have this dream like vision that I'm driving and the car in front of me stops really fast. I can barely stop in time and my eyes pop open instead of finding out whether I crash or not. It's always just as I'm drifting off to sleep and it wakes me up with a start so I have a hard time falling back to sleep again because I'm so alert then.

ADPi Conniebama 07-06-2005 08:36 PM

OK I am petrified of spiders - I blame my brother for my fear of bugs in general, because, we use to have a pool, and he use to shake the basket, that you use to skim the pool with, over my head if I was in the pool while he was skimming it. Little ones, big ones, furry ones, it doesnt make a difference they are all evil.

But, I think my most unusual, irrational fear is of a closed shower curtain. I alway, ALWAYs, look behind the curtain. Whether I am at home or at someone elses house. I am laughing as I type this because I didnt even get scared watching psycho. But, something must have happened to me at some point to install this fear in me.
