I wonder if this is the same Tannis Vallely who played Janice, the young genius on Head of the Class. If so, Tannis, why don't you hook up Robin Givens with a part. She needs a comeback:D

Unfortunately, they're going to do Jen like that because Amurrica (sic) doesn't want to see her. They want to see Beecee outta H-Town, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx.

TTT:)

Circuit city were giving out promotional t-shirts with each $9.99 (on-sale) soundtrack cd they sold, and I found out after they sold out. :( I can't find one anywhere in my area...

Still BLUTANG 12-24-2006 05:47 PM

just bought tickets for the 8pm show tomorrow!

OhSoVeryLadylike 12-24-2006 06:09 PM

This is one of those times when I am GLAD I live in lil ole Bastrop, La. I will have NO TROUBLE getting in to see this tomorrow after dinner!!

MeezDiscreet 12-24-2006 08:58 PM

i saw it on the 18th. on a scale of 1-10, i give it a 7. jennifer sang the hell outta "and i am telling you!!!"

Still BLUTANG 12-26-2006 10:03 AM

Jen sent chills down my spine and brought tears to my eyes singing "and i am telling you."

the movie was done very tastefully - i'm no fan of remakes but it didn't FEEL like one. If my mom hasn't seen it yet i'll be taking her this weekend.

AKA2D '91 12-26-2006 04:18 PM

Jennifer did a GREAT job. Her rendition of AIATY... was GREAT. She brought tears to my eyes as well. I have the soundtrack, but to SEE it in the movie was PHENOMINAL.

Everyone did a great job. Beyonce's performance was good. However, JENNIFER was THE STAR. SHE should have been nominated for Best Actress, regardless if she is a rookie in the industry.

I saw the film in Houston. When Beyonce sang "Listen", all you could hear were *crickets* and *silence*. I was surprised, since it was her hometown.  However, when Jennifer finished "And I ..." folks were applauding and standing to their feet.

I'm interested in seeing what the numbers were. When we arrived at the theater, there was a long ___ line. We puchased our tickets in advance, so we thought we would not have a problem getting into the theater. NOT! I had to use tactics l acquired for RC and Boule to save seats for the fam. LOL :p :D

Good movie! Great entertainment! This will become a part of my DVD collection.

Ditto on everything in this post, no need to type it twice! :D

I wound up seeing the movie twice because we had some EXTREMELY loud talking teenagers sitting right behind us the first time. But the second time around was actually better, and Jennifer's rendition of "And I Am Telling You" brought tears to my eyes both times...

My mom keeps saying "How did Fantasia beat her on American Idol?" LOL

OOhsoflyDELTA#9 12-26-2006 05:51 PM

I was really impressed with the movie!!! Jennifer was outstanding!!! When she sang "And I am...." the little hairs on my arms were standing up....I felt all of Effie's pain at that moment....In my opinion Beyonce did well..along with the rest of the cast...I can't wait to get the soundtrack...two thumbs up from me!!

ETA: we had to go to two different theatres to actually see the movie...it was sold out at the first one and the line to buy tixs for the last screening was hella long....so went deeper into the 'burbs the line was long but we got in with no problem...this was the first time that I've gone to the movies on Christmas Day...never knew it was such a big deal...

Honeykiss1974 12-26-2006 06:08 PM

Thanks yall for the reviews. I too am NOT a fan of remakes and I honestly hadn't planned to see this (especially with Bey as the lead because I don't think she can act her way out of a paper bag) but yall's comments make me want to see it. :)

Keep 'em coming...

MeezDiscreet 12-26-2006 06:29 PM

actually, Beyonce ISN'T the lead although preview and commercials would have you believe she was

Oh. my. gawd! YES!

I wish I could rewind back to 1982 when I could have seen this on Broadway. If Jennifer Holiday was anything (probably better or more intense) than Jennifer Hudson's performance, I would need a whole box of Kleenex. I can revert to how I reacted to the character's from the Color Purple on Broadway...just sobbing! LOL

The ending of DGs....wooooo! sniff! sniff! :D

It was so-so. My mother agreed. I think Jen and Beyonce did a good job, but the plot was blah. It seemed like every other movie about artists making it big, nothing stood out.

MsDJ80 12-26-2006 11:45 PM

I'M SOO ANGRY BECAUSE IT WAS NOT RELEASED IN MY CITY...I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL JAN 19, 2007 TOO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!

The Movie was Great!

I saw the movie this afternoon around 1p, and I still have chills from Effie (Jen) singing And I'm Telling You! Jennifer was absolutely phenomenal! AKA2D, you could said it best, Jennifer clearly is the star in this movie. She was the main character in the movie the entire time. Beyonce did a great job as well. I loved her song, Listen. It's just a pretty song.

The movie overall was great. I am going to see it again with my entire family. Chills. I love music so this just made me want to sing or something.

Great, great movie. I hope this cast wins Oscars. Especially Jennifer.

teena 12-27-2006 06:41 AM

I saw the movie and I thought it was OUTSTANDING. Jennifer sang another song that blew my mind ( I cant remember what it was about). I think that Bee is seriously overexposed because she wore Listen out and every one in the theater was like *yawn*. I LOVED Eddie Murphy in this film. He sang surprisingly well. I was like  when he performed at the tribute.

I heard that Jennifer Holiday felt shut out when they were making this movie. I wonder why JHoliday could never really catch a break.

Remember the original was done 20 years ago. Its the nuances of the industry and singing groups from that time that makes it different. It borders on being a true story.

eduakator 12-27-2006 08:07 PM

Just came from seeing the movie. It was good. Jennifer did a wonderful job. Simon didn't like her weight on American Idol. Who cares??? Sistah can sangggg! Ms. Bee was OK. I am a music lover so I will be seeing it again.

Proverbs31 12-27-2006 09:11 PM

I saw it and loved it! We left right after dinner and thought we got there in enough time and sure enough it was sold out! We came back for the next showing 45 minutes early and there was a long line to get into the actual theatre to sit down! But it was definitely worth the wait. When Effie performed "And I'm telling you", folx were shouting like they were in church lol.

Target has the soundtrack for $12 and I believe there are about 20 songs.

Lyoness 12-28-2006 12:16 AM

Dreamgirls Soundtrack

Just to let you all know, there are 2 versions: a. 1-disc that has whole songs and b. 2-disc deluxe version that includes whole songs plus snippets that the characters would sing + different versions of AIATY (dance mix) and another song.

Why are people really surprised that Eddie can sing? I was even more blown away by him than I thought I would be. Jamie Foxx was on Tavis Smiley talking about Eddie's performance and what he(Eddie) conveys with just a glance. This man needs an Oscar!!! I LOVE all of the songs that he sang. I wish Anika Noni Rose had been able to sing a little more. This woman did win a Tony after all. There apparently was a song in the play that she (Lorell) sings but they decided not to add it to the movie. Oh well. I will be getting the 2-disc version and I can't wait until the movie comes out on dvd. There will most likely be some type of deluxe version. It will join my collection of great black movies: The Color Purple, etc.

There was applause and some ppl stood after JHud sang AIATY... This seems to be the case all over the country. I think she did Flo Ballard, JHoliday and the role of Effie in general very proud.

Hopefully my comments didn't spoil anything for those who haven't seen the movie. Go see it asap.

If you are willing to travel an hour and a half, they are showing it here in Greenville/Spartanburg. I'm probably going to see it tomorrow night after I get off from work.

I also have the 20-song soundtrack. I really enjoyed it.

OOhsoflyDELTA#9 12-28-2006 09:44 AM

how the movie was released in certain cities is confusing...it was released in Charlotte (Yay!!) but my LS is po'd that it wasn't released in Greensboro....so she has to go to Winston Salem to see it, which in my mind is more of a small city then the Boro...they never let on that it would be a limited release on 12/25 did they????

ETA: Circuit City has the 1 disc soundtrack for $9.99...picked it up yesterday and loving it!!!

jitterbug13 12-28-2006 09:49 AM

I wanted to see it while I was home in Charleston and wondered why there were no listings for it in the paper. When I went to look up times on Yahoo Movies yesterday that's when I found out they are not showing it in Charleston. But at least they are showing it here in Greenville so I will get to see it without traveling far.

redblackdelta 12-28-2006 12:18 PM

I liked it but had a hard time taking Eddie seriously. I felt him when he had his melt down and that was it. Everytime he took the stage I saw all of his past characters wrapped up in one. From James Brown (RIP) on Saturday Night Live, remember his skit "Hot Tub", to Randy from "Sexual Chocolate"
to Donkey from Shrek, it just seemed like Eddie brought them all out and expected us to see a new character. We don't until he brings his works out.

1browngirl 12-28-2006 04:50 PM

I saw the movie today. I loved it! I agree with everyone else, Jennifer Hudson was great as Effie, her singing and acting were all on point. Beyonce was ok, which has me wondering why she's nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe when she was definitely in a supporting role. Jamie definitely had me hating him as Curtis.
