For the Jennifer's....a question?
So if you go by the nickname Jen, or Jenn, to shorten Jennifer. Do people ever ask you, "Gin? Like the drink?"
Because here lately everytime I introduce myself thats what people say. "Gin? Like that drink. That's so cool." I want to say "yes, like the drink. My mom was a drunk and here I am." Does anyone else get this or is it just me? |
My name is Jennis. It's James and Dennis squished together and pronouned like "tennis" but with a "J." At least 90% of the people I meet end up calling me Jennifer, then Jenny, then Jen.
I don't really get asked the "Gin" question, but some idiots do occasionally ask me, "Why didn't your parents just name you Jennifer?" The best response that I can't say back of course is "Why didn't your parents stop before you were conceived?" |
I'm not a Jennifer - but I'm confused... I pronounce "Gin" and "Jen or Jenn" differently - is that not correct, or not how you pronounce them?

Plus, in Georgia, it's a nightmare because I also get "jEEE inis" heavy on the southern drawl. LOL! |

People call me: Janice (jaa-nis) Jenice (jeh-niece) Jennifer Jenny Jen Jan Genesis My ex-boyfriend's little sister couldn't say my name, so she called me "Jennet" and when my brother was a baby, he couldn't figure out my name at all, so he called me "Sisu." And my family calls me "J" for the most part. Sometimes "J Girl," sometimes "JC" and my mom calls me "Jacob" because my initials are JCB. |
My mother once worked as a french translator for the government and she wanted to name me Cheri (my dear, with the french pronunciation.) But she figured everyone would butcher my name so she named me Sharon instead. However, my middle name is Jeanette, which she wanted pronounced as jahnnette, but of course that didn't happen either. :D

People get Pen and Pin mixed up sometimes too. I would suppose it would be the same type of mistake. |
Those of us born in the 70s probably remember having multiple Jennifers in our classes. I always had at least two or three in my classes. When I participated in my local Junior Miss competition, there were four Jennifers out of the 16 contestants that year. (They went by Jen, Jenn, Jennifer and Jennifer, no Jennys.)
Useless info: there has never been a Jennifer on The Real World or Road Rules. Go figure. |
My name is Jessica and a lot of people call me Jennifer and I can't figure out why... I don't think I pronounce Jessica, Jennifer?!?!
|
There were 3 Jen.... girls in my pledge class. Jen J.; Jenn Smith, and Jennifer H.
|
I used to work as a receptionist and I would get all sorts of combos:
I've been: Jen Jenny Jeni Jennifer Jenn Janet Joan Janice Jan Jin Jon (which was weird because that was my boss' name and people on the other line would get all confused.) Jen-i (pronounced Jen-eye.) I stick to Jen but people call me all sorts of crap. |
I've never been mistaken for gin. :)
I tend to use "Jennifer" for business (especially over the phone..."Jen" can sound like "John") but I'm Jen to all my friends. |
I've always loved the name Jennifer. I used to name all my dolls Jenny when I was a little girl haha
|
When I joined my chapter I was told I had to be Jennifer because they already had a Jen and a Jenny. I was used to being Jen, so that was a change. When the other Jen graduated I thought I had my chance, but that fall we got an Alpha who went by Jen. She ended up being my little...actually, now that I think about it, all of us Jen-types were in the same family!

okay so legally mine is jennifer. i think it is a pretty name but wayyyyyyy to formal for me. parts of my family call me jenny, my friends and other parts of my family call me jen and my grandma who knows (yes i told her not to) calls me jennifer.
but never heard that one except for in middle school my friend oj dated a jen and they had shirts that said "gin n juice" |
i'm not a jennifer, but if someone forgets my name, i swear that 9times out of 10, they call me jennifer. it is the weirdest thing!

I introduce myself as Jennifer, but prefer Jen. I always wanted to be a Genevieve. Only my grandparents call me Jenny. I knew one woman who wanted to call me fur-fur but I refused.(she was a friend of my mom's). Sometimes I think I should hyphen with my middle name and become Jenny-Lynn :p Oh, and I had "Gin" happen to me just once. |

Kari Keri Kerry Karey Carrey Carey Karrie Kerrie Cari Cary ...and probably at least a few more I can't remember! :p It used to drive me nuts, but now I'm used to it. When someone asks me my name and has to write it down for something, I've gotten used to saying "Carrie, C-A-R-R-I-E" ...that coupled with having a semi-weird last name, which I also have to spell everytime, makes it kinda funny! |
My daughter's name is Jennifer, she was born in 1981 and guess what the # l girls name was that year? You got it "Jennifer"!!!
So when she started preschool we started calling her Jenna. She switched back to Jennifer in middle school and high school, but in college became Jenna again and still uses Jenna. |

Every time I hear it, I think of Jenna Jameson. I can't get the image out of my head. |
My boss in my Americorps program was a Jennifer. She would always introduce herself as Jennifer and her voice mail said Jennifer--but with people she knew she was always Jen. 1 N. She always wanted to be Jenna--but so many people were used to calling her Jen that she couldn't get it to stick.
She moved to Atlanta last year to start a new job...and there were already 2 Jennifers. 1 Jennifer and 1 Jenn (2 Ns). She decided now was the time to use Jenna--so everyone in Atlanta calls her Jenna...but everyone who's known her before calls her Jen. We make fun of her for it ("Who's Jenna? I don't know a Jenna!") Drives her nuts...:D |
Growing up, I always had a couple Jennifers in my class. Both were called "Jennifer", but we had to add the first initial of their last names Jennifer M and Jennifer H). UKDaisy, about why people are hearing "Gin" when you say "Jen" - the only thing I can think of is that you might have an accent. I see you are from/in Kentucky. I noticed that people from your region have a strong slant on words like kin/been/pen etc. I can definitely imagine hearing someone from Kentucky saying "Jen" and having it sound exactly like "Gin".
As for me, I often have people confuse my name for Helen or Ellen. .....Kelly :) |

Actually, if one thinks about it, for example Thomas. 2 sylabols.
Tom is so much easier to say, Jen-if-er. wow way to much breath and time! Use single sybilabal Names, uses less oxygen, time, and energy!:D Jane, Dan, Tom, Curt or what ever! Dont use My Air and Time! I dont have that much left!;) :p |
I go by Jen, but my family calls me Jenni. No one's ever mistaken my name for Gin though...
|
eww. i know how you feel - i am CONSTANTLY called Michelle and my name is MELISSA!! .... or, because i usually go by Missy, unless its something proper - people are like what? "misTy??" and im like noooooo  its actually frustrating for a while ....
and the whole accent thing - im from new york, and when i moved to vegas.. id say something and people look at me like i have 7 heads just because it comes out differently than how they say it. everyone loves to have me say "BOX" because it comes out "BAAAAX" to them... lol .. how random am i?? sorry for just rolling along here.. :p |
