Dorm pet
I need to find a pet that is small enough to hide in a dorm. But the problem is that I can't take it on the plane with me, so I need something that'll die in 8 months or less. I wanted a beta fish, but they can live for 2 years, so that's out. But I don't want something that'll die in 2 days, like a goldfish. Any ideas?

I heard Beta die after 8 months when flushed down a toilet.

Of course now I want one. Hey... I had a roommate that had a goldfish that lasted longer than two days. I've got one at home that has been around since my elementary school carnivals... when I was in elementary school. I think it's some sort of super fish. Fish tended to be the popular choice if you absolutely wanted a pet in the dorms. But if you are already setting a time limit on its life before you own it, perhaps you are not ready for a pet. |
When our daughter was away at school and missed "her" kittys, she volunteered at a local shelter. She went in a day or two a week for an hour or so and just petted (is that a word, it doesn't look right) the cats on her lap.
She loved it, and so did the cats. |
There was a brief time that a bunch of my friends all had betas. They'd have beta fighting tournements. Drop two betas into the tank, let 'em go at it until one shows to be more dominant, then declare a winner (don't think one ever died).
As for dorm pets, someone once told me that Oklahoma State had some kind of rule that said that you couldn't have any pet that couldn't survive being underwater for 3 minutes. |
Try a turtle, frog, or a toad-If you have to rid of yet you can always let in go at a park.
|
I used to have some betas that lasted almost 7 years & they had just been passed around a whole bunch. Started off in a college dorm room, passed on to another girl in the dorm who happened to be my next door neighbor, who eventually passed them on to my sister & then my parents.
You could care for a beta & then pass it on! But I tend to agree that if you're just looking for a pet with a short life span maybe you are not fully ready to care for a pet yet. |

I remember one time in summer camp, we're all walking in a field and hear squishing noises along with ribbits. You can guess what happened there. Some little snot wouldn't stop crying and I bet he wears pantyhose on his face and kills people. -Rudey |
This has got to be a joke, and a very poor one at that.
|
Get a Furby. You can take it with you, and you can turn it off when you want.
Seriously, if you aren't going to be able to care for a pet over vacations, etc., then don't get one. It's cruel to get a pet and then leave it alone on breaks and wish for it to die. |
I don't want to leave it on a break, that's why I thought if I got one with a short life span (and it would die of natural causes), then I could give it a respectable burial before I go home. But I do love that idea about the frog I love frogs! And my old roomate has 2 betas, I bet she'd take care of it for me over the summer, I didn't think of her. Thanks guys!
Anyway, I already have a volunteer commitment with a homeless shelter, I don't have time to go to an animal shelter. But after I graduate, I'm getting a ferret! |
If you are afraid, get a stuffed pet!
Hate to say it, but if you asked this question, You do not need a Dorm Pet. Just screw the guy down the Hall!:( YOU AINT READY! |

Bad idea. It can severely mess with the local ecosystem. Releasing pets is illegal in many states. |

Plus, most of the amphibians and reptiles in pet stores are not meant to be in the local climate, most are from the tropics. Your animal could freeze to death, or dehydrate if you're in a drier climate. Get a stuffed animal, or maybe find a shelter that does a "Doggie day out" where you can "adopt" a pet for a day, and return it near closing. My friends that live on campus/in the house/in student apartments love it. The dog park is so crowded on those days |

When I was in college, we had a guy friend I knew from high school who we called "Pet Rock" behind his back. He was pretty, but also pretty useless. He was in our bio class and would come by before exams to "study." We'd let him hold flash cards and make copies. Sometimes we'd bring him with us to parties. :) I'm sure there's some Pet Rock Boys in your dorm. Find a pretty one and feed him every now and then. He probably (hopefully) won't die at the end of the semester and then he'll go home to his mom and she will feed him. |

HEY! dont knock goldfish.. i bought my first goldfish while i lived in the dorms, he had a one gallon tank and was a lil cutie... well that was 3 years ago and he is still going strong! this year around october will be his 4 year anniversary... he has since moved up in the world to a roomy 5 gallon tank all to himself...he is kinda territorial since he was alone for so long, and doesnt like new fishies, he doesnt give them a chance to eat. I also agree with everyone else, you are NOT ready for a pet. The orginal question bordered very much on selfishness, no offense but think about the welfare of the animal before you think of your own personal time lines. had a good laugh from reading this thread though... been MIA in a while.. glad to see greekchat is still as crazy as always ;) |
I hope this thread is a joke. Why don't you get an ant farm?

So, with all of these restrictions, exactly WHY do you want a pet?
|
I've always had pets my whole life. When I went to college, I started some serious pet withdrawl. I see my pets in the summer, but when I go back, I get lonely in that room all by myself.

Or better yet, find some great campus clubs to join and get involved on campus-- that will keep you busy! Or you could volunteer at an animal shelter or work part-time at a pet store. Or, start a dog-walking and pet-sitting business!

My folks bought me parakeets to keep me some company when I was out of school for the summer, when I was little. They didn't bring me much company. It was a chore to clean up after them and to get them to shut the hell up when we were sleeping. After my last parakeet (that little SOB lived for like 13 years) died last December I promised my self I would never fool around with pets, especially small ones. I agree this is a funny thread. |
I won a goldfish at Greek Week Jamboree sophomore year, but I didn't want it and I couldn't find anyone to take it. So I tried to set it free in a pond (the one behind Dorsey Hall, for mu_agd's reference). I dumped him in and watched him swim around for a minute, after which a HUGE M'FING CARP came up out of the bottom and ate him.
I now feel guilty every time someone says the word 'goldfish.' |
