Coke, Pop, Soda, Soda-Pop, Other?

Now this may have already been posted a million times, but I'm new, so shoot me.

What do you call it?

Coke? Pop? Soda? Soda-Pop? Something else?

bekibug 06-14-2005 10:12 PM

Coke. Or Co-Cola, depending on how long I've been around some of my relatives.

broomstick 06-14-2005 10:47 PM

you must be from the south?

I say pop... probably because i live in the midwest.

AGDee 06-14-2005 11:16 PM

Pop

Tippiechick 06-14-2005 11:22 PM

Coke... Or, I will also say Co-Cola (Pron. Co, as in co-worker, Cola) much like Bekibug does.

Coke is only for Coke, Pepsi, RC cola, Sprite, Sun Drop, etc. Dr. Pepper is Dr. Pepper.

luvtoscrap 06-14-2005 11:35 PM

It is called soda-calling it by any other name would be just wrong.

CUGreekgirl 06-15-2005 12:36 AM

Its all Coke or Co-Cola.

-yes, i'm from the south.

Like my location says, I'm either almost in Mississippi (home) or almost in Georgia (school), or travelling in between. :)

Glitter650 06-15-2005 02:33 AM

Soda

neonsparkles 06-15-2005 03:06 AM

Coke

Xylochick216 06-15-2005 04:54 AM

It's ALL coke... and yes, I'm from the South :)

My roommate freshman year called it pop... it always grated my last nerve (then again, she was just obnoxious)

Unregistered- 06-15-2005 05:00 AM

I'm sorry, when Coke is used for something not Coca-Cola or Diet Coca-Cola...that's just retarded.

It's soda.

Pepsi is Pepsi. Sprite is Sprite. Sierra Mist is Sierra Mist. They are not Coke.

That's just how it is.

AOII_Luv 06-15-2005 05:48 AM

I'm an Army brat, so I have lived all over, but I have lived in Indiana the longest, so far, before moving to Michigan. My family and I say "soda" while we live in an area where they call it "pop." It drives me a little crazy because people even refer to juice that is purchased in a bottle as "pop!"

AOIIalum 06-15-2005 06:04 AM

It's all Coke. The longer I live in the non-South, the more convinced I will be that it's always been all Coke and always will be all Coke.

PandaOnProzac 06-15-2005 06:57 AM

soda

Yep - its ALL coke ;)

Convo:
Person A: Want a coke?
Person B: Sure
Person A: Here you go (hands person B a Mt. Dew)

Taualumna 06-15-2005 07:47 AM

Canadians tend to say pop or soft drink (but the latter is seen more often in print)

KSigkid 06-15-2005 08:04 AM

Soda - like OTW said, a coke is a coke, pepsi is a pepsi, etc.

aephi alum 06-15-2005 08:37 AM

Soda is soda.

Coke is a specific type of soda (or a recreational drug).

Pop is what you do to bubble wrap.

AEPhiSierra 06-15-2005 08:59 AM

soda. and if you said anything else in nyc people would look at you like you're crazy.

for this topic check out: Pop vs. Soda

AOIIBrandi 06-15-2005 09:00 AM

Coke. Always has been, always will be.

Zillini 06-15-2005 09:05 AM

I grew up in Illinois and it's always been soda to me. I now live in the South and it drives people crazy. If you come to my house and ask for a Coke, you'll get a Coca-Cola. If you want something else, you have to ask for it by name.

Sister Havana 06-15-2005 09:16 AM

It's pop. Always has been, always will be.

kafromTN 06-15-2005 09:21 AM

It's Coke, pure& simple.

AXO Alum, you are so dead on, or person A will ask "what kind?"

ragtimerose 06-15-2005 09:33 AM

Where I come from, we call 'em "cold drinks". Barq's Cream Soda is especially known as "red drink".

mmcat 06-15-2005 09:36 AM

something to drink...
or get specific. if you want a coke, you get a coke. if you want fanta, you get fanta...ditto water.

Coramoor 06-15-2005 12:47 PM

Pop.

The reason it got that name is b/c when it first started to be sold in cans with the old pull tabs it would 'pop' when it was opened.

agdbirmingham 06-15-2005 12:53 PM

What a great map Broomstick! Very intersting!

I call it both soda and pop, but I try not to drink the stuff so I don't call it much of anything lately.

I've lived in the south for 4 years now and it still drives me crazy that people call everything "coke". That bothers me way more than the whole pop/soda debate. I can't tell you how many people complain about restaurants that serve ONLY Pepsi products. They make it sound like they're serving illegal drugs to young children! It's rather amusing!

A: Got any sprite?

Yeah. It's generic until you get to the point of ordering....

My Dad, who was born in Kentucky and spent his formative years in Indiana and Texas calls it "sodey-water" instead of soda water.

ETA: Pepsi sucks.

UKTriDelt 06-15-2005 01:10 PM

Kentucky's not Deep South, but here everything is Coke. The only time I use the word "soda" is when asking for a club soda... which never happens.

valkyrie 06-15-2005 01:12 PM

I've never understood referring to a beverage by anything other than its actual name -- I want a Coke, so I say Coke. I don't really care for anything other than an actual Coke.

Rio_Kohitsuji 06-15-2005 01:17 PM

POP!! :D

ZTAngel 06-15-2005 01:39 PM

soda

ISUKappa 06-15-2005 01:48 PM

I say pop and soda both, but use pop more frequently.

RedRoseSAI 06-15-2005 02:15 PM

According to that map, my county is 50-80% "pop". I must be in the 50-20% that says "soda" (or something else).

amycat412 06-15-2005 03:30 PM

soda.

AlphaSigOU 06-15-2005 03:51 PM

The hell with 'soda' or 'pop'... BEER! :D

PinkRose1098 06-15-2005 04:34 PM

As a child of Alabama, I say Coke. It's a hard thing to break and I always will say Coke even now that I live above the Mason - Dixon.

I love this statment!I'm the kind of girl who's not a friendly person without that morning shot of DP and I don't really like any of the other type of coke. I've started asking point blank "Do you have Dr. Pepper?" because I usually don't remember who bottles DP in a particular area.

LeslieAGD 06-15-2005 04:58 PM

Generally, I just call it by the brand name...
otherwise I alternate between soda and pop.
