Coke, Pop, Soda, Soda-Pop, Other?
Now this may have already been posted a million times, but I'm new, so shoot me.
What do you call it? Coke? Pop? Soda? Soda-Pop? Something else? |
Coke. Or Co-Cola, depending on how long I've been around some of my relatives.
|
you must be from the south?
I say pop... probably because i live in the midwest. |
Pop
|
Coke... Or, I will also say Co-Cola (Pron. Co, as in co-worker, Cola) much like Bekibug does.
Coke is only for Coke, Pepsi, RC cola, Sprite, Sun Drop, etc. Dr. Pepper is Dr. Pepper. |
It is called soda-calling it by any other name would be just wrong.
|
Its all Coke or Co-Cola.
-yes, i'm from the south. |

Coke

It's ALL coke... and yes, I'm from the South :)
My roommate freshman year called it pop... it always grated my last nerve (then again, she was just obnoxious) |
I'm sorry, when Coke is used for something not Coca-Cola or Diet Coca-Cola...that's just retarded.
It's soda. Pepsi is Pepsi. Sprite is Sprite. Sierra Mist is Sierra Mist. They are not Coke. That's just how it is. |
I'm an Army brat, so I have lived all over, but I have lived in Indiana the longest, so far, before moving to Michigan. My family and I say "soda" while we live in an area where they call it "pop." It drives me a little crazy because people even refer to juice that is purchased in a bottle as "pop!"
|
It's all Coke. The longer I live in the non-South, the more convinced I will be that it's always been all Coke and always will be all Coke.

soda

Convo: Person A: Want a coke? Person B: Sure Person A: Here you go (hands person B a Mt. Dew) |
Canadians tend to say pop or soft drink (but the latter is seen more often in print)
|
Soda - like OTW said, a coke is a coke, pepsi is a pepsi, etc.
|
Soda is soda.
Coke is a specific type of soda (or a recreational drug). Pop is what you do to bubble wrap. |
soda. and if you said anything else in nyc people would look at you like you're crazy.
for this topic check out: Pop vs. Soda |
Coke. Always has been, always will be.
|
I grew up in Illinois and it's always been soda to me. I now live in the South and it drives people crazy. If you come to my house and ask for a Coke, you'll get a Coca-Cola. If you want something else, you have to ask for it by name.
|
It's pop. Always has been, always will be.
|
It's Coke, pure& simple.
AXO Alum, you are so dead on, or person A will ask "what kind?" -Mark |
Where I come from, we call 'em "cold drinks". Barq's Cream Soda is especially known as "red drink".
|
something to drink...
or get specific. if you want a coke, you get a coke. if you want fanta, you get fanta...ditto water. |
|
Pop.
The reason it got that name is b/c when it first started to be sold in cans with the old pull tabs it would 'pop' when it was opened. |
What a great map Broomstick! Very intersting!
I call it both soda and pop, but I try not to drink the stuff so I don't call it much of anything lately. I've lived in the south for 4 years now and it still drives me crazy that people call everything "coke". That bothers me way more than the whole pop/soda debate. I can't tell you how many people complain about restaurants that serve ONLY Pepsi products. They make it sound like they're serving illegal drugs to young children! It's rather amusing! |

A: Want a coke? B: Sure A: What kind? A: Got any sprite? Yeah. It's generic until you get to the point of ordering.... My Dad, who was born in Kentucky and spent his formative years in Indiana and Texas calls it "sodey-water" instead of soda water. ETA: Pepsi sucks. |
Kentucky's not Deep South, but here everything is Coke. The only time I use the word "soda" is when asking for a club soda... which never happens.
|
I've never understood referring to a beverage by anything other than its actual name -- I want a Coke, so I say Coke. I don't really care for anything other than an actual Coke.
|
POP!! :D
|
soda
|
I say pop and soda both, but use pop more frequently.
|
According to that map, my county is 50-80% "pop". I must be in the 50-20% that says "soda" (or something else).
|
soda.
|
The hell with 'soda' or 'pop'... BEER! :D
|
As a child of Alabama, I say Coke. It's a hard thing to break and I always will say Coke even now that I live above the Mason - Dixon.

Generally, I just call it by the brand name...
otherwise I alternate between soda and pop. |
