New York Locals

I am just curious what are the local sororities and fraternities located in New York. How do local sororities and fraternities show greek unity amoung themselves and with other local orginizations?

AEPhiSierra 06-13-2005 09:28 AM

I am not in a local myself but there are three locals on my old college campus, Brooklyn College.

Alpha Sigma
Gamma Beta Delta
Kappa Phi Chi

PeakSP03 07-18-2005 09:53 PM

I go to SUNY Alfred which is a school of all locals. Currently there are 8 recognized and active fraternities and sororities.

Fraternities
Pi Rho Zeta (Which I’m a brother)
Kappa Sigma Epsilon
Theta Gamma Theta
Mu Theda

Sororities
Alpha Beta Chi
Pi Nu Epsilon
Delta Lamda Rho

The only unity builder that we have is a lock in that we did last year, which we are doing again at the beginning of this year. We spent the night in a lodge, owned by the school, hanging out and bonding, and in the morning we had a long discussion on what things in the Greek system and the school system was holding us down the most. It was really fund and really helped start us in the right direction towards creating strong unity between some of the organizations that had little.

tunatartare 07-18-2005 10:14 PM

I thought that there were nationals at Alfred. I could've sworn I heard about a Lambda Chi Alpha chapter there.

lenoxxx 07-18-2005 10:15 PM

That would have been Alfred University, not SUNY Alfred.

Lambda Chi Alpha got thrown out along with all of the fraternities and sororities there in 2003.

if you go to www.localsororities.org, you can look through chapters by state and by letter.

PeakSP03 07-19-2005 05:53 PM

yea that was crap, cause a brother of a fraternity died over there and they killed the whole Greek System.

Locals still going strong
I'm an alumni member of Alpha Kappa Phi Sorority (Agonian). This is a regional sorority thru the New York college system. In 1957 NYS put a ban on national fraternity/sorority organizations, so all these groups had to cut ties with their national affiliation. The ban was lifted in eth early 1980s. Many local/regional groups still thrive at these campuses all over NYS. Many of these regional or locals do have more than one chapter and usually hold conventions to talk about tradtions, history etc. Many of them have websites, ours is http://organizations.oneonta.edu/sorority/akphi/ which has links to our other chapters. My Alma Mater, SUNY - Stony Brook (aka Stony Brook University) has a lot of locals and a few nationals and regoinals. I am a co-founder and alumna of a local sorority. I am not sure if this site is up to date or not, but it will give you an idea of what's there. Here's the link!

Do you mean NYS as in all of New York State? Because my chapter has been on campus since 1911 (Adelphi Universiy in Garden City, NY). Unless that didn't include private schools?

There are no locals at Adelphi, they were banned in 1992. I know there are a few locals at St. John's and Hofstra.

AGPhiBete 08-09-2005 06:44 PM

We aren't a local but we may as well be.... I'm the President of the only NYC chapter of Phi Beta Psi, a national, non-academic sorority...though our chapter is made up entirely of college aged girls, many of whom attend CUNY schools....and unlike many of the Phi Beta Psi chapters across the country, our chapter is run as much like a regular collegiate GLO as possible.

Right now, I am trying to get us more involved in Greek Life around the NY area...though it's hard because we are a) not on a college campus and b) not always acknowledged by other Greeks...

so its hard :-( if anyone is interested in planning some kind of get together, event, mixer, etc, let me know!

Greeek Life was banned in the mid 70's - mid 80's at all CUNYs that I know

The State University of New York system banned all non-locals (I think in the 1960's or 1970's.) I believe they thought it would give them more control over the groups which isn't really how things turned out. They allowed the national and regional groups to come back in the late '80's.

Actually they banned nationals in the mid-50's due to discrimination clauses in some of the nationals' bylaws. This is not to say all nationals there at that time had them, but some did, so rather than discriminate (har) they banned all of them.

Local Sorority

Theta Phi Gamma Sorority Inc. at CUNY Baruch, CUNY John Jay, and CUNY Hunter.

Most Multi-Cultural Greek Org in the CUNY system!!:)

klplovely 05-19-2007 03:40 AM

KLP is the only local organization on campus, out of the three other sororities and three fraternities. We're smaller than the other organizations, but we enjoy being smaller and more of a close-knit family.

Greek Week is the main form of support for Marist Greeks, where we cheer for one another unless we are directly competing. In most cases, there are no sore losers and we all congradulate one another. We won GW 2006 and got 2nd place GW 2007, so if anything, with 20 active members , it shows that size really doesn't matter!

When individual organizations sponsor an event, all of Greek Life supports them. KLP and Zeta Psi organize a Blood Drive every semester, and Tri-Sigma organizes Relay for Life. At both of these events, all Greek organizations are represented.

Greeks do receive a lot of support, especially from faculty advisors. I still wish Marist Greeks had more traditional events, like Homecoming, for example.

I am in a local greek letter organization, Chi Theta Sigma Fraternity Inc
we are located in New york and are always looking to work with other local organizations, you can contact us on our email, chithetasigmainc@gmail.com

All of NYU's 14 fraternities are national, but 3 of the 10 sororities are local (including my own). All 3 locals, along with 3 national sororities, make up the Panhellenic Council, so from that perspective, there is a great deal of balance on our campus. Most of the local orgs have been at NYU longer than the national chapters.

How old is your local? NYU is DPhiE's Alpha (as in founding chapter not Alpha of NY) which was founded in 1917 although we were off campus for some years at some point as it it is not 90 years straight.

Who are the other two NPC groups, AEPhi and AST?

The nationals were kicked out of the public schools SUNY etc. back then.

Many local organizations in the New York region do not band together to assist and help each other out. Now is this a bold and outrageous statement or somewhat hitting on the truth? I would love to say that t is outrageous, but who truly knows. I see so many NATIONAL Greek Unity events, but yet no local events. There are so many more organizations that people would like to know, but seldom do, because locals think so introspectively. Perhaps with the year 2008 arriving, some locals can put some events together and really publicize them. I would love to see a Greek Picnic this year or Step Show, or Community Service events from locals would be great. Even local networking would be great. Just some thoughts.

Serena_TPhiB 03-25-2008 07:09 AM

I was going to type ours, Theta Phi Beta, lol but I see my sister beat me to it like last semester! lol

But yeah, as far as sororities go on our campus it's us, Kappa Psi Delta and Alpha Phi Zeta as the locals and the nationals are DPhiE, AEPhi and AST. We'll also have have a new national this fall.

minitien 04-04-2008 09:47 PM

Do any of these local ones allow students from other school to join. (Say, I go to CUNY JJay, could I join one at CUNY Brooklyn???)

LunaP 04-13-2008 11:37 PM

Members here there, everywhere

Minitien,
Well, my org was founded at CUNY Hunter, but we do accept member from other CUNYs for the sake of expansion. We have a member at City Tech who is working with a group of interests there to get a colony started, as well as a girl who goes to Temple University. We're working our way around the east coast ;)

Browneyes12389 05-05-2008 04:22 PM

I know this topic is kinda old but incase anyone reads it another local sorority in NY is Sigma Chi Zeta at St.John's University

LunaP 05-19-2008 12:29 AM

Hey Browneyes! You guys are right by AD Greek right? We get our gear from them all the time, and follow it up with yummy scoops of Coldstone icecream ;)

<3 Luna

My sorority. Delta Gamma Pi, has a chapter at SUNY Binghamton. From what I hear, Binghamton will be opening up to national organizations this upcoming year. Could just be a rumor though...not quite sure. ;)

If any events are planned...please post! We have tons of alumna in NYC and then the sisters up at Binghamton...it would be great :)

_Nova_ 09-09-2008 10:38 PM

There's my sorority Alpha Sigma which has chapters at Brooklyn college, John Jay, Hunter and St.Francis. There's Gamma Beta Delta, AEPhi, Kappa Chi Phi, Sigma Chi Phi. The list is endless...if go to wikipedia there's actually a legit list of local sororities and coed frats there.

Quite a few -
Alpha Beta Sigma Sorority, Inc. and Beta Sigma Kappa Fraternity are two of them... Both being multi-cultural, the former is an Afrikan, Caribbean, and Latina Sorority, and the latter is an Afro-Latino Fraternity.

mayor13 10-04-2010 04:51 PM

Zeta Phi Lambda is a local chapter out of CSI in Staten Island. If anyone wants to get together for mixers let me know! We are still pretty small but are always down for meeting new Greek organizations.

Pantheta 01-14-2011 11:40 PM

We Admire all of You!!!

We are a local based in New York City, with members who live in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Maryland and Nigeria. We are not a conventional group, as most of us are in our 30s and 40s and are professionals. Most of our members didn't join (or couldn't join) more established organizations when they were in college and we have others who never even went to college.

Our primary focus is community service and youth development. Some of the service activities that we have done include: (a) mentoring and sponsoring a baby shower for a homeless pregnant teen and her boyfriend; (b) preparing and distributing survival bags for the homeless; (c) conducting a toy drive for a local public school; (d) securing donations of money and supplies to donate towards the disaster relief effort in Haiti; (e) supporting a soldier deployed overseas; (f) mentoring an incarcerated teen and preparing him for re-entry and (g) developing a youth chapter.

We are fairly new and have not really established an online presence as yet (but that is one of our goals this year). We just wanted to introduce ourselves and send a shout out to all of you and your various organizations. You are the standard that we aspire to and I really hope that everyone of you takes advantage of the opportunities that your affiliations present. For those of you who are still teens and still in your 20s, these are the best moments of your lives. Enjoy them under the watchful eye of us 40 year olds who are hating..... but then, God has been good to allow us to get this far! ;)

I am new to this forum and I look forward to hearing more about the exciting work that you are all doing and to reading up on some of the advice that you are offering that I hope will broaden our reach to those who are less fortunate.

I am remain faithful - you remain strong - and we are Sigma Theta Rho!

Be well everyone!
