Let's talk about Tequila.

So, my new love is tequila. It makes me very happy and always provides a very happy buzz, but admittedly I am but a novice when it comes to tequila knowledge. I enjoy a good margarita as much as the next person, but last night I discovered the joy of drinking shots of decent tequila (Cazadores), which is how, as I understand it, tequila is meant to be enjoyed. I want to try El Tesoro next, because I've heard nothing but good things about it.

What's your favorite kind of tequila? Do you have any good stories about adventures had after enjoying some tequila?

lifesaver 06-11-2005 11:36 PM

Oooh. Lets not. Had bad experiences with tequila in HS.

Theres a huge fan base of 'sipping tequila' here in SA. THe good stuff isnt taken in a shot, but sipped.

Couldnt tell ya anything else about it tho.

UKDaisy 06-12-2005 12:30 AM

Its all about Jose Cuervo.

Most tequlia's will make me sick. But Jose seems to go down smoother than most. Although Jimmy Buffet's tequila is pretty good too...only not 8 shots of it ;)

mmcat 06-12-2005 12:38 AM

look out for the worm though

AlphaSigOU 06-12-2005 01:27 AM

Big difference between tequila and mezcal (sometimes spelled mescal) - while they are distilled from the same agave plant, tequila's name is a 'controlled origin' name; only agave plants grown in the Tequila region near Guadalajara can be used in tequila production. Mezcal has a coarser taste than tequila, and Monte Alban's pickled gusano (worm) is nothing more than a gimmick.

Excellent site on tequila and mezcal: http://www.ianchadwick.com/tequila/

Here's my favorite tequila adventure: I was at a party. I had just broken up with my boyfriend, so I was kind of grumpy with men in general. Nevertheless, the cutie bartender at the party was making up for it and providing me with free shots all night. I told him I would drink anything except tequila (bad experiences previously), so he hooked me up with free vodka, et cetera . . .

To make a long story short, they ran out of everything except tequila, so this (very cute but very drunk) bartender decided that he could sneak the tequila by me in order to get me drunker by pouring ROOT BEER over it and disguising it. I don't know what I was thinking -- I was waaasted -- but I downed a shot of root beer-tinged tequila. There was no time for me to prepare for the reaction and three seconds later I was puking in the corner of their living room.

Needless to say, neither the cute bartender nor I got anything that night.

Okay, maybe that wasn't the kind of tequila story you wanted, but that's all I got. Tequila + Heather = not friends.

The four stages of tequila:

1. I'm rich.
2. I'm good-looking.
3. I'm bulletproof.
4. I'm invisible.

One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor! :D

PhiPsiRuss 06-12-2005 07:59 AM

I've never gotten a buzz off of Tequila. I feel nothing and then - boom - I'm wasted.

You forgot my #5 - I'm sick!!
I like it, but it definitely does not like me!

Oh, it's Sunday morning and the sun is shining,
In my eye that is open, and my head is spinning.
Was the life of the party; I can't stop grinning,
I had too much Tequila last night.

Jose Cuervo, you are a friend of mine.
I like to drink you with a little salt and lime.
Did I kiss all the cowboys?
Did I shoot out the lights?
Did I dance on the bar?
Did I start any fights?

Now wait a minute, things don't look too familiar,
And who is this cowboy who's sleepin' beside me?
Well, he's awful cute, but how'd I get his shirt on?
I had too much tequila last night.

Jose Cuervo, you are a friend of mine.

Instrumental break.

Oh, those little shooters, how I love to drink them down.
C'mon, bartender, let's have another round.
Well the music's playing and my spirits are high.
Tomorrow might be painful, but tonight we're gonna fly.

Jose Cuervo, you are a friend of mine.
I like to drink you with a little salt and lime.
Every time we get together, I sure have good time.
You're my friend, you're the best, mi amigo.

Tequila and I don't mix. I don't really even like margaritas unless they're well-mixed or heavily flavored.

CarolinaCutie 06-12-2005 10:01 AM

Although I'm not big on taking shots in general, a tequila shot every now and then is fun. And I drink margaritas almost everywhere I go... mmm tequila.

My ex-boyfriend calls tequila "te-kill-ya." ;)

All of the off-campus houses at my school have names (for example, I live in "AA").

My diamond sister (little) lives in "Looks Te-quil-ya."

True That.

Remember:

Te-kill-ya can make You Sleazy!

Used go to a bar where a bunch of hung out after work. Each Night was a different Hinky Dinky (Drink of shots). WOW that Mexican stuff would become DEADLY!

Whoa Nellie, replacing tires from bouncing off of curbs gets expensive.

AchtungBaby80 06-12-2005 04:45 PM

Tequila hates me, too. And I hate spending the night hugging the toilet bowl, so I don't drink it. :p

Kevlar281 06-12-2005 06:39 PM

100% pure agave is the only way to go

Peaches-n-Cream 06-12-2005 06:44 PM

Has anyone ever tried a tequila called Q or one that begins with the letter Q? I tried it a while back before it was on the market. I thought it was good.

Had a few run-ins with Jose and others back in college. The following day generally consisted of others telling me the stories of what had done the previous night. We would do upside down margarita shots with it... some very fun and rough nights.

ambición6 06-13-2005 02:17 PM

oh man, whoever though Jose Cuervo is good tequila is off their rocker. bleechhh!!!

I have to agree with valkyrie, Cazadores is very good tequila. so is El Patron. they go down smooth and dont give you hangovers.

my in-laws brought back this awesome bottle of tequila when they went to mexico in may. unfortunately, i forgot what it's called, but it went down sooooo smooth! another unfortunate thing, its not available here in the US.

HBADPi 06-13-2005 02:20 PM

Jose and I broke up sophomore year and we have never reconciled since. I havent forgiven him for making me spend the night before my first formal hugging the toilet.

Umm Jose's Reserva de la familia and Anejo are actually pretty good.

If I had to drink tequila, I'd probably go with the Reserve, a Porfidio, or Herradura.

ETA: http://www.alcoholreviews.com/SPIRIT...lapacult.shtml those are some reviews.

Both are quite good, in my opinion - I'm more of an anejo fan, but reposados can do the trick, depending on the mood.

As far as anejos go, Cuervo and Herradura are two solid ones, and Don Julio is probably the most widely-known, although I would tend toward the Cuervo. It's a little bigger, with more body, and while i'm not 100% sure I agree with the reviewer's comparison to MM, it does have some qualities comparable to good bourbon.

If you're feeling like something summer-y and refreshing, try a "truckers' marg" (or 'tx special'), with something like El Tesoro, chilled, and Squirt soda.

ISUKappa 06-13-2005 04:00 PM

I've heard Cactus Jack is pretty good.

Just like Hawkeye is topnotch vodka.

UKTriDelt 06-13-2005 04:41 PM

Tequila and I do not get along one bit... Jose and Cabo Wabo have both made me sick the morning after, and I generally do *not* get sick from alcohol... I'm more of a sleeper when I've had too much. Tequila made the days after Cinqo de Mayo and Derby quite interesting and nothing I'm willing to repeat!

Rio_Kohitsuji 06-13-2005 06:09 PM

Ahh, tequila and I are good friends..yes in deedy :)

Once evening my boyfriend and I were eating out and decided it'd be safe to have a couple Tequila Sunrises with dinner (the bartender made them umm...strong). Ya know, being tipsy in Linens-N-Things is more fun than what you would expect....:D

I have always been a rather big tequila drinker.
Mr. Jose Cuervo has been a good friend of mine for several years now. :)

MaMaBuddha 06-13-2005 10:56 PM
