NPC Convention Sites

Hello NPC Sisters! Best wishes to those of you who will be attending your inter/national convention this summer. It seems like often we use the same hotels for these functions, so I thought it would be fun to share where we've been & where we're going!

Chi Omega
2006 - Washington, D.C. - Marriott Crystal City
2004 - San Antonio - Marriott Riverwalk
2002 - Palm Desert, CA - Marriott Desert Springs
2000 - Orlando, FL - Marriott World Center
1998 - Tucson, AZ - South Pointe Hilton
1996 - Tampa, FL - Innisbrook Resort
1995 (Centennial Celebration) - Memphis, TN - The Peabody, et al
1994 - Houston, TX - Hyatt
1992 - Orlando, FL - The Peabody
1990 - Palm Desert, CA - Marriott Desert Springs
1988 - St. Louis, MO - Adam's Mark
1986 - Scotsdale, AZ - The Camelback
1984 - Scotsdale, AZ - The Camelback
1982 - Scotsdale, AZ - The Camelback

DGMarie 06-09-2005 02:16 PM

DG was at the Marriot Crystal City in 2004. The hotel is like 1 stop on the DC metra from the airport. I would recommend taking it if you are flying in because it is so fast and so convenient, clean and cheap. I think I paid like $1.50 each way for the 5 minute trip. It was much faster and cheaper than a cab or shuttle bus.

OleMissGlitter 06-09-2005 02:44 PM

AOII's Convention that I attended:

New York Marriott Marquis 1997 (Centennial Celebration)
Marriott Marquis NYC

Norfolk Marriott Waterside 2003
Waterside Marriott

Atlanta Marriott Marquis 2005, June 25-July 3, 2005
Atlanta Marriott

I'm waiting for them to have one in Memphis or New Orleans! That would be so awesome! I know they have had one or two in New Orleans already!

Dee

I also attended Atlanta in 2001 and Chicago in 2004. My goal is to pull a Jane A. Graf -- I think her record is 26 consecutive Conventions now? :D

To add on to Dee's AGD list, here are the ones pre-1981. It's interesting to see where Conventions have been held before -- some places I've never heard of, and I'm sure some of these venues have since closed. How fitting that Conventions were held in bigger cities and hotels as our membership grew.

Notice how a few Conventions were omitted to reflect the war conflicts. Have other GLOs done the same thing?

1907-Alpha Chapter House, Syracuse, New York
1909-Alpha Chapter House, Syracuse, New York
1911-Masonic Hall, Athens, Ohio
1913-Lathrop Hall, Madison, Wisconsin
1915-St. Albans, Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota

1917-Because of war conditions, Grand Council acted in lieu of National Convention, meeting at the Delta chapter house, Minneapolis, Minnesota

1919-Hotel Tudor-Nahant, Massachusetts
1921-Northshore Hotel, Evanston, Illinois
1923-Hotel Phoenix, Lexington, Kentucky
1925-Olympic Hotel, Seattle, Washington
1927-The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan
1929-Hotel Syracuse, Syracuse, New York (Twenty-fifth anniversary Convention)
1931-Huntington Hotel, Pasadena, California

1933-Omitted, as was done in the case of several fraternities, because of the economic conditions of North America

1935-Chateau Frontenac, Quebec, Quebec, Canada
1937-Troutdale-in-the-Pines, Evergreen, Colorado
1939-Essex and Sussex Hotel, Spring Lake, New Jersey
1941-Grove Park Inn, Asheville, North Carolina

1943-Omitted because of war conditions
1945-Omitted because of war conditions

1947-Banff Springs Hotel, Banff, Alberta, Canada
1949-Hotel Roanoke, Roanoke, Virginia

1951-Omitted because of the conflict in Korea

1954-Chateau Frontenac, Quebec, Quebec, Canada (Fiftieth anniversary Convention)
1957-Hotel del Coronado, Coronado, California
1959-French Lick-Sheraton Hotel, French Lick, Indiana
1961-Hotel Colorado, Glenwood Springs, Colorado
1964-Wentworth By The Sea, Portsmouth, New Hampshire
1966-The Empress, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
1968-Tan-Tar-A. Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri
1970-Marriott, Chicago, Illinois
1972-Del Webb TowneHouse, Phoenix, Arizona
1975-Crown Center Hotel, Kansas City, Missouri
1977-Oklahoma Center For Continuing Education, Norman, Oklahoma

That hotel is absolutely beautiful.

I remember walking into the hotel for the first time 4 years ago and was in AWE of its design and atrium.

I was almost tempted to just lay down in the lobby and stare up to the top because the atrium was just...WOW.

The food was pretty good too. :)

honeychile 06-09-2005 10:33 PM

This year, our Convention is at The Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort, Phoenix, AZ.

We alternate between Conventions & Conferences from year to year. Our recent conventions have been at:

2003 – The Westin Galleria, Houston, TX
2001 – Marriott Marquis, Atlanta, GA (150th Anniversary)
1999 – Registry Resort, Naples, FL
1997 – Westin La Paloma, Tucson, AZ
1995 – Omni Netherlands Plaza, Cincinnati, OH
1993 – Marriott Desert Springs Resort, Palm Desert, CA

OTW, I think most sororities suspended "major" operations during WWII. The first time I ever heard of Gamma Phi Beta was at my mother's cousin's house - she had this big old photo of her sorority (GPhiB) all sitting on the wings of a plane & gathered around it. Very military chic!

I second this. I also want to note that I only left the hotel once arriving but I believe I walked 25 miles in those 4 days. That hotel is not only beautiful but it is HUGE. Make sure your shoes are comfortable because the meeting rooms are quite a distance from your hotel room! We also got to see the Atlanta fireworks from the windows of the hotel.

FloridaTish 06-10-2005 08:10 AM

Not meaning to hijack your thread...

but I loved the Marriott Marquis, as well. My senior prom was held there and I also had a corporate Christmas Party there one year. I remember back in the 80's when the hotel was completely trashed after a New Year's Eve celebration at the hotel. People were throwing soda machines and potted plants off of the balconies into the atrium. It was total mayhem and was a major item on the news in Atlanta back in the 80's...

End of hijack!

Just how many floors does this hotel have, anyway? I swear I hate heights...and atriums...you should have seen me at Centennial at the Marriott Marquis in NYC. Terror doesn't describe it :)

AGDee 06-10-2005 02:35 PM

I honestly don't remember how tall the place was. I think I was on the 9th floor for that one. It's not supertall, from my memory.

ETA: Just checked their web site which says it is 50 floors, a bit higher than I remembered!

I stayed on the 42nd floor and I made sure I had my back turned so I faced the elevator door at all times.

I ditto what Dee said, though. That place was huuuuuuuge and I too did a lot of walking! Dress comfortably and don't forget to bring a jacket or sweater!

Whether it be 26, 25, 20, etc. consecutive conventions...these women never fail to amaze me. It's so awesome to see them, some of them very elderly and frail, still celebrating sisterhood after all these years.

Sidenote about Jane:

The first time I met Jane was in 2001 in Atlanta. Me and the girls from Hawaii had shipped over a bunch of orchid leis (mind you, these were fresh flowers) from Honolulu to give to Council, members of our VST, and other special sisters. Anyway, Jane received a lei at the Foundation dinner on the first evening. By the conclusion of the convention 3 days later, the string that once held the lei only had two flowers still intact.

Jane still wore that "lei" proudly as she was wheeled around in her wheelchair!

I can't wait to see her again next year in California!

AngelPhiSig 06-11-2005 01:57 AM

Well Ive only attended our Leadership Training School - the thinger held when we dont have convention.

I think the last few years we have had the convention in DC.

LTS had been at the Hyatt in New Brunswick NJ the two times Ive been/am going to it.

July 2-something - 31st!

AXO Alum being green with envy!!!!! Our convention at WDW last year was at the Hilton at Downtown Disney. My CP & I called it Ghetto Disney - we had a lovely view of two roofs meeting together from our window. The best was the guy out there eating his lunch one day while we had the window wide open getting dressed (no - we didn't THINK that someone would be sitting out on top of a roof in July in Orlando!)

Not to mention the new carpet & paint everywhere - STINK city!

Next year is in Chicago.

NeonPi 06-13-2005 07:37 PM

2001 was at the Marriott Desert Springs Resort, Palm Desert CA. Personally I loved this resort, but boy i'm sure glad we were inside - 110 F on concrete). It was also where I won my Rose Award, so it will always be special to me ;)

After Convention, AOIIAlum will post where we are going in 2007 (still DAMN hot)

A counselor friend & I both think that most people go to Banff because they like saying "Banff" and loved Rocky & Bullwinkle! ;)

We have two "Jane Grafs" - I'm sure that someone knows how many conventions they've attended & their names, but they're both in their late 80's!

I'm terribly disappointed that I won't be at this year's convention, but I have a very important wedding to attend.

NO!!!!!!! mr. honeychile & I are due for a little chat, though.

The very first baby I ever held is being married, and "Wild Horses" (hee hee) couldn't keep me away! It will be a couple days after the Convention, but Mr. Visa said I couldn't do both. :(

Since I won't have any time between business sessions and meals, I'm thinking an extra day (either before or after, haven't decided which yet) is in order. I'm thinking of staying an extra night or maybe even two. This place looks too gorgeous and I already know that I'm scheduled from 8 am-11:00 pm daily, including registration day and the day we leave!

I went to both Chicago conventions and Atlanta, so I also think this will be a nice change. Ironically, the few that you and I have attended are the few that were in urban settings. Most of the time they have been in fancy resorts (thinking Scottsdale, Tarpin Springs, etc).

I'm crossing my fingers that the resort setting will help me save on $$$ this time around. The Chicago and Atlanta nightlife broke the bank the last time! ;)

I'm thinking about staying an extra day as well...and maybe even hitting up LA to visit friends and sisters after Convention's done!
