Question about the movie "Sideways"

Two questions, one an opinion, one a factual:

1) Why was Miles so aprehensive about going into that one winery, the one where he drank the bucket you dump the leftovers into?

2) What do you think happened at the end. If you notice, the plants in front of the house are different, so I think she already moved...

UKTriDelt 06-06-2005 12:37 AM

I'm pretty sure the reason he was so reluctant to go into that winery was because they were more "commercial" and were more based on aesthetic appeal than actual quality of wine. Remember how there were loads of people coming in off of buses, pretending to know a lot about wine? I think Miles resented the fact that the vineyard was more out for monetary gains than for making a truly good wine.

As for the last scene... my memory has failed me

DeltaSigStan 06-06-2005 12:40 AM

Gotcha. Thanks

We were thinking of getting into wine, but we'd end up buying 2 buck chuck, a jug of Rossi and a box of franzia, so what's the point?

KDAngel 06-07-2005 02:36 AM

I so don't get what all the hype about this movie was for. I absolutely didn't like it AT all. BLAH!

Co-sign! I thought it was humorous at times, but definitely not even close to being one of the funniest movies in the history of ever.

2002 Firestone Syrah. ;) From a tour of the Santa Ynez valley Memorial Day weekend.

Their 2001 Reserve Merlot was very good too, but to quote Miles, "I'm not drinking any fucking merlot" lol

I thought it was funny. I thought they were loser-y. But, it was funny. The merlot line alone made it worth the time.

DeltaSigStan 06-09-2005 04:04 AM

Ok, I'm pretty sure that wasn't directed at me, but I just wanted to clarify that I DO NOT think this movie is one of the funniest ever.

Rotten tomatoes has it at 98%.......I believe it's around an 85%, but that's based on percentage of good vs. bad reviews.

Agreed! Parts made me chuckle, but I came out of that movie basically regretting the last hour and a half. Watching people be miserable is not my idea of a good time

DeltaSigStan 06-09-2005 04:20 PM

I think it was good up until they met with the girls....it's not that they did a bad job, it's just the plot got convoluted with two more "main" characters after we spent so much time just watching those two.

Rudey 06-09-2005 04:53 PM

This is why I wished this movie had only played in select theatres like it did in the beginning as opposed to hitting the major theatres later.

Y'all are a bunch of unappreciate phillistines :)

add me to the "hated it!" crowd... no snaps with a twist here. Acting wasn't all that great (though what was there to act? The plot wasn't even mildly entertaining). Maybe people REALLY into wine liked it or something....

Well when you said "Watching people be miserable is not my idea of a good time", I didn't understand how you took a comedy and made it into an upsetting film.

Also, most independent films have tended to be focused on darker subjects...

This wasn't the most independent of films but when it was first shown, it was only in select theatres and I appreciated the film before people started making quotes about merlot in between their Napolean Dynamite verbage.

Though I respect you for branching out from the usual blockbusters, whether or not you were the first or the last person to see it doesn't change the quality of a film. I, too saw it when it was only in certain theaters, and that didn't help me. I appreciate indie films for their unique cinematography and quirky subjects, but this movie just seemed to lack that for me... The main characters were either unhappy 90% of the time, or cheating on their fiancee. It's all just a matter of personal opinion

SigmaChiCard 06-27-2005 02:07 PM

does sideways really qualify as an independent film? i mean it still cost $12M and it hit nearly every theatre in america...I'm not sure indie film and that really go together that well.

from my experience guys loved the movie & girls hated it. Could it have anything to do with a distinct distate for the Wings guy being a prick?

What you said doesn't make sense.

Part of the indie appeal is that it isn't in widespread release. This wasn't early on.

Part of the indie appeal is touching on more emotional subjects. It doesn't make sense that you would like independent films but this one sucks because it had unhappiness in it.

And also, there was quite a bit more than unhappiness in this and ultimately it was happiness with everyone being satisfied.

It hit every theatre after some time in its screening. Prior to the buzz about it, it was only in select theatres.

Quite a few of the indie studios are owned by the major studios and the distribution often goes through them anyway...

Maybe so. Sideways is the worst movie I've ever seen in my 26 years of life and I've seen some STUPID movies.

I remember once when I was in high school, my friend and I decided to get this weird little basketball movie. It turned out to be a home video-type thing about playing basketball and stuff. I'm not talking documentary either. Imagine some kids putting a video on the side of a basketball court and then playing a game. That's how bad it was. I have no idea why it was even at Blockbuster. So weird.

But, with Sideways, I couldn't even finish it! I was so mad that I'd rented it based on reviews.
