RENT! the movie

Well the first trailers are out in the theater. The movie is to open November 11th. Most of the cast is the original cast. Supposedly the voicemails and tune ups have been cut from the movie.

krystle 06-02-2005 12:06 AM

I'm so excited.

Theres a site somewhere where the cast members are "blogging" whats going on as they do it, I'll have to find it for y'all.

Edit:; Found It!

moe.ron 06-02-2005 03:52 AM

I'm more excited about Sweeney Todd the movie. Now that a perfect musical.

RedRoseSAI 06-02-2005 09:22 AM

Now if they included the "Lease" song from "Team America: World Police" THAT would be funny!

Jaggergirl 06-02-2005 02:54 PM

niiice. The blog is a fun idea. So are they shooting the whole thing in SF? To me Rent is really tied to NYC but San Francisco definitely can work.

I think I read something that because of noise ordinance laws, they can't shoot in NYC past 10pm, so they don't get to shoot as much as they want there. But some things will still be filmed there.

Jaggergirl 06-02-2005 03:01 PM

makes sense. That's New York's loss. I actually saw the show on stage in San Franicsco and the city definitely has the vibe that supports the play. I wouldn't be totally upset if they moved the whole thing there.

Boo to them cutting the voicemails and tune-ups. I wonder how it will sound and look. Hopefully it will be done as well as Phantom was (at least I thought Phantom was great in my book)

Sister Havana 06-02-2005 03:49 PM

I'm optimistic about the movie since it's got most of the original cast in it. I can't wait!

GreenKappa 06-03-2005 12:48 PM

I guess something had to be cut in the move from the stage to a movie, but I'll miss the vms and tune-ups too...hopefully they'll find a way to build the parental pressures and Mark's moments into the film in other ways.

Let's hope not. If it's anything like Phantom, it'll be a flop.

I think they set on phantom too long to make it into a movie and thats why it flopped... Rent is almost to long... but Bohemia still works... i think itll be a hit

moe.ron 06-06-2005 05:15 AM

I still have no idea how the musical got the Pulitzer. The book is a mess.

I think part of the reason Phantom flopped was that they set out this HUGE publicity campaign on TV (ads every 15 minutes), but didn't release it world-wide for a month later. As a result, by the time it DID go world-wide, the world was "over it" and just decided to get the DVD. The limited release x 1 month didn't help their campaign at all...

Hopefully they'll be smarter about it with RENT.

sugar and spice 06-06-2005 03:42 PM

Honestly, I don't think there's any way that RENT won't be at least a moderate success. It is one of the few musicals I can think of that really transcended the typical theater audience, especially among younger adults. Unless it completely sucks (and with so many original cast members, that seems unlikely), there will be plenty of Rentheads going back to see it multiple times.

valkyrie 06-06-2005 04:21 PM

Haha I thought someone was going to recommend a movie to RENT! Does anybody still do that, or do we all just get Netflix now?

I just put Devil's Playground in my Netflix queue, if anyone wants to talk about renting movies. It's a documentary about Amish kids going on rumspringa.

Haha, I'm pretty jealous.

Actually I'm going to run down to the local indie video rental place and see if they have it. They had American Pimp a few years ago, so we rented it . . . it was interesting.

Netflix is our best friend!!!! I only go to the movies now when there's a movie I "have" to see on the big screens!! (eg, Star Wars, Titanic, etc.)...otherwise, I'll put it on my "list" and wait for the movie to come to me!!

KDAngel 06-07-2005 02:35 AM

So my favourite musical!!! :D

MissMonika 06-08-2005 12:44 AM

I can't wait. I saw the Musical in San Francisco. I have been in love with it ever since

Hey quick question...was Taye Diggs in the original cast or was he someone that they added on? I see him singing in the trailer and I was like:eek:, I didn't know that he could sing!

He was in the original cast. I believe that's how he and Idina met.

Really? What part did he play? My husband has the original Playbill and Program from Broadway (he saw it when it first opened) and Taye Diggs' name isn't in it anywhere...did he come in at a later time??

aabby757 06-08-2005 04:08 PM

Yes, Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel met while part of the original cast members of Rent.

I read somewhere that Idina said it must of had something to the with the fact that she mooned him every night!

Taye wasn't an original cast member in Wicked but he played Fiyero for a short time. I won't give away his character for those of you who haven't seen it. He did play against Idina's character Elphaba and Glinda too. He was amazing. He has a beautiful singing voice.

And smoking hot if you ask me!

Jill1228 06-09-2005 01:16 PM

Saw the trailer last night before "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" -- "Seasons of Love" has been running through my head ever since.

The QuickTime version can be seen here.

I am so geeked!!!!!
OMG! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! You have made my evening!
Of course I started singing along to the trailer!

"Seasons of Love" is one of my all time favorite songs...Bar None!
And if I hit "refresh" and play the trailer one more time, Mr. 1228 might have a fit! :D

I am so going to see this movie on opening day! I haven't been this stoked about a movie for some time.

(Yes I have seen the play a few times, I must confess. I have the book and have played the soundtrack to death!") :D

Time to hit "refresh" again! :p

Am so excited about the movie - I am going to haul out my 2-disc Rent soundtrack and listen to it while I drive to work... :)

Very good. I wondered who would do that!

I got out our old soundtrack today, but one of the kids either has, or lost disc number one sometime in the past.

The only piece I really miss is "Glory," otherwise I can live pretty much with disc two.

a.e.B.O.T. 10-15-2005 04:49 PM

55,210!!! really excited, can not wait

DeltAlum 11-04-2005 02:23 PM

The first network commercial I've seen for the movie was on in prime time last night.
