Alpha Xi trivia
ok ... this is stolen from a couple of other forums .. but it sounds like fun ...
I'll start with a trivia question and whoever answers it correctly gets to pose the next trivia question ... let see what we know about Alpha Xi Delta and what we can learn.... Ok for starters ... We have 10 founders ... How many of the 10 founders married? |
6 married, 5 of them to Sigma Nus
When was gold added to the double blue? |
When we went national by installing Beta chapter in 1902.
How many of the Founders had Alpha Xi daughters? |
three founders had Alpha Xi Delta daughters. Alice Bruner, Bertha Evans, and Lewie Taylor.
Who were the youngest and the oldest founder at founding and what was the age span? |
The youngest founder was Alice and the oldest was Eliza or Lewie (both from 1867 and could find there birth date).
What year did Alpha Xi Delta join NPC? |
flirt and gcrose ... thanks for making me look this up ... I have always made the assumption that Eliza D.C. Everton was the oldest .. based on something dimly remembered from pledge class (yes we were pledges long ago ) lessons. But actually Lewie Taylor was the oldest.
(per my Alpha Xi Delta history) Lewie Strong Taylor was born July 18, 1867. Eliza Drake Curtis Everton was born Aug. 14, 1867. Both would have turned 26 that summer after the founding in April. The youngest was Alice Bartlett Bruner was born in 1878. She was 15 at founding. So the span of ages was 11 years. I've always liked the idea that Alpha Xi Delta has been composed of "non-traditional" students (ie older, younger, single and widowed) even from the beginning |

In honor of our upcoming convention... What year was the first National Convention held and where? |
First convention was 1903 in Galesburg, Ill.
When was Headquarters moved to Indianapolis and where was it moved from? |
FHQ moved in 1964 to Washington Blvd in Indianapolis from Evanston, Il.
Convention is held every other year... what years in our history have been exceptions to this pattern and what was the reason? |
Hmm, this one is hard!
Starting w/ 1903, the "odd" years were: 1904-I would assume b/c they hadn't started w/ biennial conventions yet, or b/c they wanted to hear the report from the Third Inter-Sorority Conference from the year before 1918 (instead of 1917)-Alpha Xi Delta's 25th anniversary 1937 (instead of 1936)-postponed so that additional funds could be made available to help chapters (this was during the Great Depression) 1943, 1944, 1945-cancelled due to WWII, and it was decided to postpone the 1946 convention until 1947 so that efforts could be focused toward the collegiate chapters 1951 was cancelled, I would assume due to the Korean War? 1959 to 1974-convention was triennial, after which conventions become biennial again 1993-Alpha Xi Delta centennial anniversary Who was the first recipient of the Order of the Rose award and in what year did she receive the award? |
The Order of the Rose was established in 1949 to honor fifty year members. It was first awarded to Edna Epperson Brinkman who also accepted the award for the other twenty-seven living members who were eligible. The women included Alice Bartlett Bruner, Bertha Cook Evans, and Lewie Strong Taylor.
When was the first edition of The Quill published? |
The Alpha Xi Delta of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority was first published in February of 1904. In October of 1964 it became known as The Quill of Alpha Xi Delta.
Who was the first Founder to enter Chapter Eternal and when did she do so? |
The first founder to enter the Chapter Eternal was Frances Elizabeth Cheney in 1901 (not sure the of the date) she was only 32.
How many chapter have been installed and how many are still active? |
Yikes, I'll admit that I am not 100% confident in my response - I can't find a really good list that includes both recently installed chapters and recently closed so I had to use my basic math skills (no one told me I was going to have to think) - but here goes:
We've installed 204 including our most recently installed Iota Mu at Lycoming College. We have 113 active chapters and 1 active colony. What was the original design of the Recognition Quill and what chapter is responsible for the current design? |
Hint?
You can find the answer in the most recent version of The Bonds of Sisterhood.
|
I really thought that I knew alot about our heritage until I began reading some of these questions! But here is one that I can answer (thanks for the hint=)
The original recognition quill was a black enamel triangle with the greek letters inside. It was changed at convention in 1922 by the Kappa chapter(UofI) to the miniture quill. Who received the first jeweled quill and what jewels were used? |
Cora Bollinger Block... Xi Love to my ELC!
it was made with a sapphire and two turquoise What was designed by 2 chapter sisters Zeta Chi in the wonderful state of North Carolina? |
The Fathers Pen was designed by two UNCW sisters.... in fact, I became friends with these girls when I was at convention in 1990 as UNCA's delegate. Kimberly showed me the design at convention - it was sketched on a piece of paper in pencil. She told me that they were going to submit their design to National Council for approval. They did and it was approved!
What is the Society of 1893? |
The Society of 1893 is for those individuals who put Alpha Xi Delta in their will to receive a portion of their estate after entering Chapter Eternal (sounded better than saying dying!).
|
^^^AXiDTrish, we need the next question!!!
|
Sorry....missed that part!
Ok, next question.....ummmmm..... Name give ALL the names the Quill Magazine has been called since it began. |
Ok, I'll give it a go:
The Alpha Xi Delta The Quill of Alpha Xi Delta What state is home to the most chapters of Alpha Xi? |
I'm assuming you mean active chapters, in which case it's Ohio with 12.
ETA: Forgot a new question. :) Here it is: When was the first alumnae chapter formed? |
The first alumnae chapter was Alliance, Ohio chartered in July of 1904.
Who was the first initiate (after the founders) and when was she initiated? |
Jessie Brown Robson, on Thursday, November 9, 1893. Our 100-Year History book says there was another recruit, but doesn't list her name.
When was our first Alpha Xi Delta songbook published, and who published it for us? |
Anybody? Need a hint?
|
Wasn't it a Sigma Nu who published our first song book? A founder's husband?
|
According to the 100 year history ...
"In 1900, the Delta Theta Chapter of Sigma Nu published the first Alpha Xi Delta songbook and presented the pale-blue edition to Alpha Chapter on Founders Day, April 17, 1900." When was the Symphony written and approved? |
Can some one give a hint. I can't find the answer anywhere.
|
1924. It was written by a committee of three AXiDs -- Helen Willis Lynn, Almira Cheney and Alice Matthews.
Beta chapter, our second chapter, was founded in 1902 from an existing chapter of P.E.O. on Iowa Wesleyan's campus. Gamma, at Mt. Union College, is our third chapter, and it was also founded in 1902. From what existing group was Gamma chapter formed? |
the S.L.C. club...which began at My. Union in 1894, added more than 100 members.
|
When Lombard College was closing and was merging with Knox, which group at Know became A Xis?
|
Okay - this isn't an answer to the question, but a question I have from another thread.
In the other thread they list the groups that are called sorority and those called fraternity. In the list Alpha Xi Delta is shown as being a fraternity, changing to sorority then going back to fraternity. Anyone know if this is true? |
Quote:
"Since 1893, Alpha Xi Delta officially had been known as a sorority, which means "sisterhood". In 1913, however, and after much discussion, the title change from sorority to fraternity was made. " |
As many times as I've looked at that book - I've never seen that! Learn something new everyday. Does it say why they made the change - since this is one of the most asked collegiate questions (Why are we a fraternity?) I'm sure it in the Bonds, but I haven't looked at one of those in a while - I know, bad advisor, bad advisor. :D

There was much discussion, but basically, since the use of the word "sorority" was in the minority of women's Greek organizations, they chose to go w/ the word "fraternity." |
Quote:
In what year did Alpha Xi Delta have to close our first chapter (not Alpha chapter, but the first chapter to ever close)? |
According to the "Every AXiD chapter ever" thread, the first closings were the Chi (reopened 1992-98, U. of Kansas) and Alpha Alpha (U. of Pittsburg) chapters, both in 1935. Since no months were given, we'll just say they both went first.
If you know the answer, go for it, but this is mainly to satisfy my own curiosity: Why were the pearl and diamond chosen as official jewels of the Fraternity, when sapphire could have been chosen because a) blue is a Fraternity color and b) it's kind of historic, since at least one of the Founders had a sapphire set in her Quill? |

I know! I think a Quill would be so pretty set with alternating sapphire/pearl or alternating sapphire/diamond. The all-pearl (like mine) and all-diamond (we have one in our chapter passed from president to president) are pretty, but I think sapphires would make them stunning.
