Unexpected sisters

I was wearing my letters one day in french class, and about half way through the class, my prof randomly tells me "I'm a Theta you know." I looked at her in amazement because it was totally unexpected, and it was about 3/4 into the semester. Have any of you fine ladies had experiences like this?

*note* I'm not new to this board. I was previously Lanie2008, but I created that name pre-rush. Now that I'm an active member I can have a name that says I'm a Theta.

I found out last year that my cousin's wife is a Theta from my own chapter! But she was there in the early 90's! That news was pretty cool. I probably never would've known had i not had a letter sweatshirt on the day I met her!

I discovered after a couple of months that our favorite babysitter is a Theta. No wonder I like her!

Me and one other girl went to sell tickets for our Rock the Casa event to our Sociology teacher. Turns out, she was a Theta. She's a great prof too.

New story: I lost my phone charger while I was visiting one of my Theta sisters in Minnesota (I'm from Washington State), and when I went into the T-Mobile store the girl that helped me and sold me my replacement charger saw that I was wearing letters, and told us that she was a Theta from South Dakota!!

I wasnt reminded of it until this past Sunday, but summer of 2002 some of us in my chapter decided to go to Kings Island amusement park outside of Cincinatti, OH to finish up our recruitment retreat. When we got off the ride "The Beast" (worlds tallest and longest wooden roller coaster) to look at our picture while on the ride, the girl behind the counter recognized our letters and said she too was a Theta from Ohio State's chapter!

I nannied a little girl last summer and found out a few weeks into the summer that her mom is a Theta! I was wearing a Greek Week shirt, and she asked what sorority I was in. I was so excited to find out that I was nannying a legacy :)

New story, I was at Pike Place Market with my family and a friend, and I was wearing my letters. Well a lady walks by me and says that she's a Theta Alum from the Psi Chapter, which I later looked up and is the U of Wisconsin. It was just cool that Theta brought me together with a complete stranger.

I am studying at the University of Denver's Publishing Institute this summer and the first day a girl asked to use my pen (which said Kappa Alpha Theta on it) and it turns out that she's a Theta too, from Denison University! She is one of my good friends here, and she's even from Chicago, like my family, so I'll definitely keep in touch. It's exciting because Theta found me my first friend here at Denver!

New Story... (I hope this keeps on happening) I'm a camp counselor during the summer at a Girl Scout camp, and I was doing check out a couple weeks ago. One of the mothers came to check out her daughter, and I was wearing a fleece with Kappa Alpha Theta on it... Turns out that she was a Theta at Wazzu.

One of my Theta housemates from last year is a counselor at a Girl Scout camp in San Diego, CA. Just thought I'd post that--she's quite obsessed with being a Girl Scout. :)

LoggerTheta 08-28-2005 11:33 AM

This is a little off topic, but being a Girl Scout was one of the reasons I decided to go Greek in the first place. I mean after I graduated high school, I was no longer a Girl Scout in the sense that I was an actual member. I'm a leader now, but it's not the same. I went Greek because it was something very similar that I could devote the kind of passion to that I devoted to Girl Scouts. That and it was an awesome way to meet some of the most awesome ladies that my school has to offer! Haha.

I went over to my chapter last month to help my grandsis sew a kite pillow for initiation night and talked to the ritualist for a few minutes. (I got to know her during my last year and trained her in to the office!) Anyhow, I asked who she had helping with initiation that weekend. She told me she ran into our old choir director (from last year) at the music building on campus while wearing a shirt with letters. It turns out that the director had been a Theta in South Dakota in college...Who knew! We spent the whole year in choir and I wonder how many times Kristen and I wore letters to class, and the director never said anything! Small world! (No wonder she was so lenient when I had to leave a few minutes early for chapter stuff...)

I had been initiated for about a week in Theta when I had to go on a trip to Chicago for my job. I was so excited because I also had been wearing my Theta flip flops all week. When I was on the plane coming back to Dallas the lady in the seat next to me noticed my flip flops and told me that she was a Theta from University of Texas in Austin! I was so floored because all of my sisters had been telling me that I would meet Thetas everywhere but I never believed it until then!

My camp counselor, Holly Brubach, was a Theta at Duke. She was very encouraging about rush, and has now made quite a name for herself. Holly's written three books (which I know of), was the Style Editor at the New York Times, has worked for Prada, and is now involved in the project mentioned below:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Holly Brubach, a noted journalist, author and fashion designer, is buying a nine-story building in downtown Pittsburgh and is planning to convert it into luxury condominiums and a retail space, a published report said.
Brubach, a Pittsburgh native and former style editor of The New York Times, is purchasing the Granite Building at Sixth Avenue and Wood Street, which was built in 1889-90 as the German National Bank, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Brubach will use two floors of the building as a personal residence and offer the remaining space - enough for five condominiums - for sale. A top floor apartment will be used for short-term rentals.

You're more than welcome! I think every one of us wanted to be "just like Holly", and I was positively on Cloud Nine when she gave me a rec!! If you google her, she has a pretty impressive resume!

I was at a tanning salon here in Columbus (I'm an Ohio State Theta), and was waiting for one of my other sisters to get out of her bed. I was wearing my lettered sweatshirt. Another girl walked past me, saw my letters and stopped. Turns out, she was was a Theta at Cornell... small world!

I am a paramedic. The other day we got a call for a 53 year old lady having chest pains. When I knelt down to take her blood pressure, she noticed my bracelet with Kappa Alpha Theta on it and said she was a Theta too! Her daughter was also a Theta, and she was standing in the room as well! It was soooooo exiting. I gave her the star treatment in the ambulance and as soon as I got all the information for my report, we talked about our Theta experiences all the way to the hospital!

It made my day! We see so much chaos out here everyday, and to walk into a home and find not one but TWO Thetas was incredible!

ThetaPrincess24 05-30-2006 04:01 PM

I hope her chest pains turned out to be a fluke and nothing serious :)

I was at a Junior League meeting recently and one of the women, Kerri, stopped me and asked where I was a Theta. I wasn't wearing letters or anything, but since we have a few Theta Alums in Junior League so I thought that was how she knew. Turns out she Googled our Alumnae Chapter because she wanted to get more involved and she saw my name on the Board roster.

She & I actually work together, but in different departments, and she had never mentioned being a Theta. I was so excited. She went to Univ of Arizona and I think both her Mom & sister were Thetas there! So her new daughter could be a triple legacy!

Bonus - she plans to get more involved with our Alumnae Chapter! Go THETA!! :)

ps. I got involved with Junior League due to the Thetas I know who are members. In fact the Admissions Chair the season I joined is a Theta in our Alumnae Chapter. I was Girl Scout from age 5 thru 13 and I think that sororities, Girl Scouts, and Junior League all complement each other! Think someone had a similar post about that here!

OKAY!!! I have ANOTHER Theta experience!!! My friend and I were in the mall yesterday, and walking by the Dippin Dots counter I saw a lady with a bid day tshirt on. I almost lost my balance when I noticed it was a THETA BID DAY TSHIRT!!! So of course my knees got weak and I was having trouble piecing a sentence together, but I walked over to her and about scared her half to death. I almost screamed "OMG YOURE A THETA?!?!?!?" I finally got around to saying "I'M A THETA TOOOOOO!!!" It was so cool. Turns out she was a brand spankin new Theta from Ole Miss.

YET ANOTHER Theta experience...about two hours ago, I went to check my mail and a girl and guy walked by and the girl had a Theta shirt on. I know I about scared her to death, too, but I can't contain myself when I see another Theta. She said she had just moved into the apartment complex about a week ago and we've already got plans to go out this weekend!!! Sooooooooo exiting!

I was at Bed, bath, & Beyond back in February registering for my wedding. We were at the front desk waiting for someone to come back from the registry dept and I'm wearing a Theta pullover jacket. This lady came up to me and said she was a Theta too from UK's chapter. So we just started talking like we knew each other. I got her reinterested in joining the alumnae chapter again too heh heh :)

I was new in Cincinnati, with a new job. Our boss had a big cookout and invited everyone to come, including familes. Well, I struck up a conversation with the wife of a co-worker. We were talking about college, and she said "You were Greek, weren't you?" I said yeah, and when I replied that I was a Theta, she grinned and said "I knew it! Me too!" (she pledged at UK). It was pretty cool. I've also seen Theta's from Ohio State and Ohio Weslyan at Cedar Point and have struck up convo's with them as well.
