Hate groups in your area???

I saw this on another board I belong to:

here is a link to a map of hate groups throughout the US:
http://www.tolerance.org/maps/hate/index.html

One hell of an eye opener! There are more than you think and they run the gamut

UlChiOCutie26 05-24-2005 03:35 PM

anyone ever been to www.stormfront.org??

I saw their story on HBO and decided to check it out because I was curious. It's so sad how ignorant some people are!

RACooper 05-24-2005 03:49 PM

Very interesting... and informative at the same time - specifically the 'Others' section on the map... many little sub-groups or movements that haven't caught the media's eye are mentioned - some hiding behind seemingly innocuous names.

Its all too easy to spot the crackpot "Aryan" assholes... but this site has given me a few more 'other' groups to add to my personal list of tools to keep an eye out for:
Chalcedon Foundation
Institute for Historical Review
Voz de Aztlan (never knew that they are so anti-semitic)
Barnes Review/Foundation for Economic Liberty, Inc.
Westboro Baptist Church (finally know who the fucking assholes behind the "God hates Fags" campagin are)
Charles Martel Society/Occidental Quarterly
Charles Darwin Research Institute
Order of St. Andrew (deeply offensive to me, being proud of my Scottish heritage - wonder what the Russian knighthood of the same name thinks).
Power of Prophecy (sigh... yet another virulent anti-Catholic group)
Lawrence Dennis Institute

Its too bad that there isn't a equally accessible site for Canada.

CougADPi 05-24-2005 04:00 PM

At least you can check for Social Justice Groups on the same page. I am pleased that there are over twice as many SJ groups in Washington as there are hate groups. Same with Oregon and Idaho. California has almost 4 times as many!

Old news.

This is why I laugh out loud when people go on and on about how "racist and regressive" the South (and parts of the Midwest) is and how "openminded and progressive" other parts of the country are.

Exactly. They make it seem like California, and SD in particular, is so racially progressive.......

There are morons who believe anything EVERYWHERE.......

That last statement was too easy a set up for any of you to turn it into a joke, so don't bother.

Not only are there morons everywhere, but there are groups of morons who have mobilized their resources behind a moronic cause.

People have stereotypical notions of where hate groups are, what they look like, and how they mobilize. There are members of hate groups all over the country who are CEOs with big offices and tailored suits, perhaps presidents of colleges and universities, DEFINITELY college students, so on and so forth.

hoosier 05-24-2005 05:17 PM

Sure, we're all against hate groups, but I'm also aware that The Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project is not doing anything about them - they want them to exist so the SPLC can raise more money.

Next year, they'll find 910 or more hate groups, and urge donors to help stop this growth.

I'll also bet that Osama bin Laden and his friends, who killed 3,000 Americans on 9/11, and minority hate groups like the Crips and Bloods, are not on the SPLC list.

Honeykiss1974 05-24-2005 06:14 PM

The Nation of Islam and the NEW Black Panther Party are on the list.

Tom Earp 05-24-2005 06:32 PM

I Hate everyone. Does that make Me normal?

These People are Very Tiresome.:(

Does Stupidy sound right?

Guess the best thing is to IGNORE THEM! :D :)

ZTAngel 05-24-2005 07:11 PM

Damn. I just moved from Orlando that has no hate groups to Atlanta that has 5. But, there are twice as many social justice groups in Atlanta than in Orlando.

Okay this is a list or resource covering US hate groups... not groups that hate the US.... and as for the Bloods or Crips - they are criminal gangs - not hate groups.

Aunt Bea's Country Buffet was hosting business meetings for League of the South.

The restaurant is right off Lexington Highway on Whit Davis in Athens, Georgia.

I don't know if they're still doing it but I've managed to get a number of people to boycott this establishment. Does anyone have any more information on Aunt Bea's?

How can you impune an Andy Griffith character?

Aunt Bea's Country Buffet
155 Whit Davis Rd. 543-0470

The saintly, cuddly Andy Griffith character from whom this Southern buffet eatery gets its name peers down from a virtually haloed portrait on the wall, watching diners file past on their way to the all-you-can-eat steam tables of veggies and fried meats. Aunt Bea's actually provides many more healthier options than you might expect, with sugar-free ice cream and traditional Southern cooking prepared with less fat than usual. Recommended for athletes looking to carboload for a low price and to families, who can relax and let their children examine the décor or watch the cult show on one of the many TVs around the walls. Lunch & Dinner, 7 Days. Checks/CC.

Any group that attempts to uplift their own by promoting hatred or oppression towards others is a "hate group." Both of these groups (or at least the more outspoken representatives) are viewed as doing both.

They'd looooove that. It gives them more time to do whatever they do. Don't let it BLOW UP (pun intended) in our faces.

Yeah, minority hate groups are on there but I guess you made this statement without knowing what a "hate group" is and exactly what the Crips and Bloods are all about.

on one hand i can see how there are a ton of hate groups in certain places, but wow, alaska? maine? isn't it just a little too cold to be all hateful up there?

Here I thought that the list is about American hate groups. Guess you learn something new everyday. What did I learn? That Osama bin Laden is an American.

RACooper 05-26-2005 02:35 AM

Speaking of hate groups, did anyone catch FOXNews today - specifically the Louis Farrakhan spot, with the New Black Panther (same assholes that blamed 9/11 on Israel) spokesman... it was nice to see racism, bigotry and revisionist history given a nice glossy image on the TV... hmmm I wonder - the guy sounded just like PHA/Shriner... has he been moonlighting as a spokesman for the New Black Panthers when he's not here on GC?

You should've left this a general topic w/o trying to call out a GCer. PHA Shriner isn't the first or the last GCer to have unpopular viewpoints that are deemed racist or prejudiced by SOME.

Heard this on NPR on the way in to work. Following excerpted from CNN.

DURHAM, North Carolina (AP) -- Three large crosses were burned in separate spots around the city during a span of just over an hour, and yellow fliers with Ku Klux Klan sayings were found at one location, police said.

The cross burnings Wednesday night marked the first time in recent memory that one of the South's most notorious symbols of racial hatred has been seen in the city.

Most of the hate groups in Illinois are in the Chicago area. Lucky us!

There is another link where you can find out information about hate sites. Stormfront has a kids page! That scares me.

Well, while there are hate groups everywhere, there does seem to be a proportionately larger amount of them in the Southern states. South Carolina has more hate groups than California, even though it has, oh, just slightly over 1/10th as many people. While that certainly doesn't mean that South Carolina is more racist than California, it may indicate that racism takes a more overt (or more organized) form there.

Then again, if you look at some of the Southern states (Georgia, for example), the divide between black separatist groups and pro-Aryan groups is closer to being equal than it is in many of the non-Southern states -- take Wisconsin, for example, where only one of the ten listed groups is a black separatist group.

I don't think you can infer much about the racism of various states based on a list of hate groups.

Funny, when I think of hate groups I generally think of the white supremacist groups in the upper plains and mountain states.

I suppose it depends on your personal viewpoint.

Mine was solidified when a radio talk show host friend was murdered by "The Aryan Nations." We worked in the same station in Denver.

He was Jewish and really took hate groups to task on the air. He was shot numerous times with a MAC-10 automatic wepon outside his apartment here.

That and how the national media (including news and movies) portrays these groups in a stereotypical manner.

Your experience gives you a more open mind and prohibits you from dismissing overt racism and hate groups as an overwhelmingly "Southern phenomenon." ;)

Well technically, Crips and Bloods are only hate groups when you don't pay for your drugs you got from them and they beat the isht outta you...

But I know a whole lotta gang bangers that dated any and everythang and the fish stopped moving when they walked into the room...

So, I don't see how much hate they have toward a specific group. Well, maybe against crack addicts...

Crack Addicts UNTIE!!!

ztawinthropgirl 05-26-2005 09:46 PM

Where my parents live (Clover, SC), the town has a Ku Klux Klan chapter. This is how I know this bit of information.

I was driving down mainstreet minding my own business. All of a sudden I see on my right these men dressed in white robes and the white hood things. I about had a dang wreck because it scared the sh*t out of me!! I had something like "you've got to be kidding me!" reaction as well. I was absolutely apalled. Good Lord knows I went directly home and told my parents because that's just creepy to have a KKK chapter in the community. Apparently, the KKK just had a parade in downtown Clover, SC. Some of them had their hoods down. I didn't think they took those off in such a blazing public location. The ironic thing is they had parked all of their vehicles and stuff in the local Southern Baptist church parking lot.

Well, I never said that I was disagreeing with you. ;) But I was just pointing out the fact that "California has a lot of hate groups, therefore the South is not as racist as people think" is faulty logic, given the numbers on the website.
