(Los Angeles, CA - June 2005) Principal photography has wrapped on The Gospel, a contemporary drama about love and redemption set in the world of gospel music and the African-American church. Starring Boris Kodjoe (Showtime's Soul Food, Love and Basketball) and Idris Elba (HBO's The Wire) the film is written and directed by Rob Hardy and produced by Will Packer and Executive Producer Holly Davis-Carter.

Shot entirely on location in Atlanta, The Gospel also stars Nona Gaye (Ali, The Matrix). Tamyra Gray(American Idol, Boston Public), Clifton Powell (Ray, Woman Thou Art Loosed), Omar Gooding (Baby Boy) and Keshia Knight Pulliam (The Cosby Show) co-star, joined by gospel superstars Donnie McClurkin and Hezekiah Walker, who make their feature debuts.


The Gospel features original music by urban gospel music perform/producer, Kirk Franklin and performances by some of the biggest names in the genre, including Yolanda Adams, Martha Munizzi and Delores Winans affectionately known to many as Mom Winans. Gospel music fans can also look for a soundtrack to accompany the film, some time in the fall. "We were able to assemble this amazing cast because our actors and heavyweights in the gospel industry like Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin and Yolanda Adams read the story and said it felt genuine to them _ that it was a drama about faith that they could relate to," says film writer/director Rob Hardy, who likens it to the biblical story of the prodigal son with elements loosely based on his own life.

Fellow producer, Will Packer, a longtime collaborator and friend of Hardy's says the two of them, together with the film's executive producers Holly Davis-Carter and Fred Hammond, shared the desire to bring a dramatic, faith-based film to the screen. 'This is a labor of love for us because we believe in the values espoused in this film," says Packer, a southerner who was raised in a church with predominantly African Americans. "Because no matter what trials and tribulations you go through, with faith you can overcome them if you lean on that higher power," Packer concludes.

And its' that message, says Davis-Carter a veteran Hollywood talent manager turned producer that motivated her to help them get this film made. "We believe there's a need for more stories about morality, redemption, faith, hope and recovery," she says. "Those values are what this film's all about and what people will respond to very deeply."


Set against the backdrop of modern day Atlanta, The Gospel stars Boris Kodjoe as a hot R and B recording artist who's at the top of his career, yet estranged from his family who are southern Christian leaders in his hometown church. When Kodjoe's character, David, learns that his father (Clifton Powell), the Bishop of their church is ill, he returns home. There he is forced to face demons from his past that strike at the very core of his being. He discovers that his childhood rival (Idris Elba) is poised to become his father's successor at the church and has married his cousin (Nona Gaye) as well. While being met with hostility from family members, he also discovers disloyalty within the music empire he is building _ all while struggling to make peace with his family, God and himself _ in The Gospel.

I know. The temperature is expected to drop drastically by this weekend. I suspect lots of folks will be sick then. :(

I know I will be sick. Here in MI, it's been in the high 80's/low 90's since Friday and it's supposed to be in the low 60's/high 50's by tomorrow and lower this weekend. I've been taking vitamin C drops and just drinking lots of water and trying to get as much rest as I can. *sigh*

Saw the movie....I give it a C+. Ill let others see it first before I give my input.:rolleyes:

Well I say go see it cause apparently there were some people in my group who loooooved it. I have my various reasons for why I ranked it so low. I think the content was very good. But some people feel that because it is a Christian movie than you cant rank it low. But I beg to differ.

I SAW this movie...I thought it was aiight. 3 stars. Idris Elba, nice!

Not so impressed with the movie or Boris Kodjoe's acting...his character was unconvincing, IMO. Can he really sing?? And the movie had some loose ends.

It just seems like actors are trying to capitalize on the success of black "church" movies.

Totally agree. No he CANNOT sing. Those were voice overs, during the credits they listed the people who were doing the voices. I wish they used the same voice throughout... cause did you noticed his secular voice sounded NOTHING like his gospel voice??

And.....who was responsible Boris' wardrobe??????? He was tacky that whole movie!!

And his haircut! He looks better bald. Aaaand I never realized how hairy he was until this movie. I know men are supposed to be hairy but dang.


No it wasn't you. They rushed the end for the sake of time, I guess.

I thought they rushed the beginning and the end. Boris had some FUNNY acting scenes and needs to work on his acting, lol. Didn't notice his wardrobe. He is too pretty and reminded me of Shamar Moore...towards the end, I wasn't attracted to him anymore.

This is the first time I saw Idris Elba...I had to check out the cast list to find out his name because there is something super sexy about this man. His mannerisms and way he speaks, etc. He just seems very manly IMO. Add me to the fanlist :)

If someone could share a pic of him I would really appreciate it, lol. I searched for his pics in Google Images, but they are all so small.

Edit: I didn't know he was British...from the movie, I think he disguised his accent pretty well.

Thats a fyne chocolate man right there. He actually was waaaay better in the movie than Boris. And Boris was supposed to be the headliner.

Great movie
 

I saw the movie and LOOOOVED it. Of course it didnt have the cursing, violence and sex which is prolly why some people didn't like it. Lets face it thats all we are used to watching, so when something comes along without all that, it loses the attention of audience members.

PS: The music was really nice too, will be buying the soundtrack

Saw The Gospel Today:
 

Overall, I liked the message in the movie, but the movie itself got a C- from me. This is why I think so:

1. The story was really choppy. It jumped around too much.

2. The action lagged in some spots.

3. The whole movie seemed rushed and I couldn't enjoy it fully.

4. Boris did not seem believable, and I think this was hampered by the fact that he didn't sing, and that his acting seemed halfhearted. His wardrobe person needs to be fired. His clothes looked rather yucky.

However, I did love the songs and I will be buying the soundtrack.
