Oprah's Legends Ball

I'm surprised that there is not a thread about this. But over the weekend Oprah through a Ball to honor African American women who she feel has paved the way for her and others. It was a black and white ball and from the stuff I saw on the news it was some fine sista's there. It was a who's who of Black and White Hollywood. Damn Oprah, where was my invite! I heard it was no press there so I don't know if anyone can find pictures of the event.

AKA4MJ 05-17-2005 02:52 PM

FYI

They're pictures of a view of the guests on oprah.com.

Steeltrap 05-17-2005 05:57 PM

I saw some pix. Yahoo made it impossible to post pictures, so I can't link it. I saw a picture of Soror Star, wearing a nice white dress, w/o BGA.

NUPE4LIFE 05-17-2005 08:28 PM

There are pictures at editorial.gettyimages.com. I know ST will be able to post the pics from there.

You could have at least given us the link, man.

There was an article on yahoo news.

Oprah hails Legends

May 17, 2005

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Oprah Winfrey rolled out the carpet for a lavish tribute to pioneering black women, then strolled it herself in a red Vera Wang ball gown. Guests including Usher, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were on hand for the Legends Ball on Saturday night.

The talk-show host joked with friends and praised the 25 honorees, including Coretta Scott King, Diana Ross, Maya Angelou and Cicely Tyson. ''These are women who, when I was growing up, made a difference for me,'' Winfrey told reporters. ''The first time I saw Diana Ross and the Supremes on 'The Ed Sullivan Show,' it changed my life.''

I agree... Janet Jackson is slowing getting bigger and bigger and Patti, Dionne or Ashanti wasn't looking to hot.

kiml122 05-19-2005 07:15 AM

I think it was Oprah's Monday show that she showed the party. I happened to catch it because I wanted to see this woman that lost 360 pounds.

But I saw some other pics, and guess what...BGA is there...she didn't leave home without him. If I knew how to post the pic I would.

AKA2D '91 05-19-2005 02:24 PM

As I go back to the picture. Patti seems like she's been under the knife...AGAIN. She almost reminds me of the late Celia Cruz.

Cali_Keisha 05-21-2005 12:15 AM

I believe they are airing the show on Tuesday. Oprah is looking like a DIVA in that RED dress. Also that pant suit was cute too but I don't know if she changed at the ball or if that was a picture from somewhere else.

I like SOME of the dresses that people were wearing, tuxes and opera ball gowns are back. Please, Patti go back to your hair color that reddish brown does nothing for you.

skywalker20_99 05-24-2005 11:48 AM

Angela Bassett looks stunningly beautiful - as usual. Not too sure about Debbie Allen's Gone With the Wind dress.

Marie 05-24-2005 11:56 AM

I have to give it up to the older ladies b/c Nancy Wilson and Cicely Tyson are doing the damn thing!

ladylike 05-24-2005 12:50 PM

I have to give it to some of the women. They had to roll around in chicken grease and then stuff themselves in there with a shoehorn but they got into those dresses.

These two are still together? Well allright then! S-S-S-S-S-solid...solida as a rock! :o :D

My college buddie's brother (Kwaku Alston) did the photography. He is BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!

I remember in college she would tell us that her brother is in school for photography and stuff, and almost as soon as he graduated he blew up! I didn't have the chance to meet him because I didn't go to my friends graduation or wedding!:(

LionOfJudah 05-26-2005 09:06 PM

Kudos to Oprah

My sister were at the event. They are talking about it like they were at the Oscars or something. They spent mortgage payments for their dresses. But I think it is great that Oprah truly knows "we" are here because "they" paved the way.

Lots of folks have emailed me for information on the poem, "We Speak Your Name," which Pearl Cleage wrote for Oprah's recent bash honoring black women. I have contacted Miz Pearl and received this response:

you can tell folks the poem will be excerpted in the oprah magazine in august and plans to publish it are in the works. :-)

So there you have it.

Tayari Jones

We Speak Your Names", the poem I wrote for Oprah Winfrey's Legends Weekend last year, is now in bookstores! There is also an audio version from Black Stone Audio, which I recorded with an introduction and biographical information about the women who were honored as Oprah's legends. The weekend (and the poem!) will be featured on a special May 16, on ABC-TV at 8 p.m. I thank all of you who wrote me about the poem and I appreciate your patience! Enjoy the special!
Peace!
