A "D" from the State, But on Magazine's Honor Roll

A D from the state, but Hillsborough High is named the 10th best school in the country by Newsweek.
By RON MATUS, Times Staff Writer
Published May 10, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hillsborough High School in Tampa earned a D grade from the state last year. And under federal standards, it fell far short.

But on Monday, Newsweek magazine named it the 10th best high school in the country.

In the country.

Hillsborough was one of 16 Florida high schools to rank in the top 100, including five from the Tampa Bay area.

"We knew we were good," principal William Orr said. "But we didn't know how good."

The Newsweek list is based on a single factor: the number of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school, divided by the number of graduating seniors. The students don't have to do well on the tests either. It matters only that they take them.

Test scores? No.

Graduation rates? Nope.

Closing the achievement gap between whites and minorities? Forget it.

Critics say the formula is simplistic. For example, a school's rank can actually improve if it has a high dropout rate.

Mine is #31

Lincoln Park HS in Chicago

WOO-HOO!!

For those in the DC area, I'm not surprised that the list is full of No. Va. and Montgomery County. I am surprised that Wilson in DC got way higher that Eleanor Roosevelt in PG, since they SWEAR Roosevelt is LIKE THAT.

HOLLA AT A MUSTANG!

I don't agree with the basis of the testing (the number of kids in AP and IB classes means nothing... how are they doing? How's the rest of the population doing?) but I can say for one that I agree with my high school being on the list, at least based on what was going on while I was in school. I know that in my experience IB was like a whole other school within the school, but the administration and a few really dedicated parents made sure that EVERYONE got the same excellent education there. THAT'S what makes the difference... staff and parents who actually care.

My high school is in the top 25. :D I'm not surprised - they have a ton of AP offerings.

The number of AP/IB tests taken divided by the number of graduating seniors isn't the world's best way to rank-order schools, but it's a start.

AOIIBrandi 05-11-2005 09:20 AM

My High School is not on there because they "test" for admission. Although many people would say there are at least 3 schools in the area (mine included) that are better than #2 on the list.

That doesn't tell you anything about the quality of the school. I'd be interested in seeing the data on how many students actually passed these tests. I'm sure the list would be a lot different (and my school would be a lot lower on it...)
Hey! I went to Stanton too! What year did you graduate? I'm C/O '96.

Munchkin03 05-12-2005 08:08 PM

My school is in the top 150, as is the other IB school in the district. The other school in my district, which isn't an IB school but was pretty good, is in the 600s.

Schools that I've always heard about being among the best, like Staples in Westport and New Trier in Winnetka, are even lower. It's a weird methodology.

My school slid in at the bottom. I never thought my school was fantastic so I'm not surprised Salem High is 1178.

Were you surprised by how many of the VA Beach schools were on the list? Every school that I ever had the slightest chance of attending was on the list so maybe I'm just used to excellence. :D

This list has always been crap, it's purely based upon something like "# of AP tests taken per student". We offer a butttttload of APs...go figure.

#113 Torrey Pines HS. I've always hated my hs :] We were #73 two years ago. Whoops. Actually it says we were 110 last year, I totally remember us stupidly boasting we were #73 or 75 in the nation a while back. Whatever.

Oooh you went to Torrey Pines? Fancy!

I went to Granite Hills HS in El Cajon, CA and we're not on the list. Big surprise. There's a reason they call it Hell Cajon.

Looks like my school Whitney Young Magnet HS made the list. I am not surprised but I am surprised at the #.

yangstar 05-26-2007 08:45 PM

Because it's hotter than hell there? I don't know how many schools in the SE San Diego community get awards, I just loved being a part of the Poway Unified before HS and the buttttload of awards they got every year. :]

Good link! I'll have to forward this to my younger siblings/cousins in high school.

I am disappointed though because there is not a single school from the area I grew up in on the list.

f8nacn 05-26-2007 09:43 PM

My high school is on the list!!! Woodrow Wilson Senior High School - Washington DC - #343!!! Go Tigers!
