A POEM FOR SGRho

What's up ladies,

I don't know how many of you are members of the Golden Luv Affair group of yahoo but for those of you who aren't, it is a site where Iotas and Sgrhos can converse with each other. At our school (The University of Southern Mississippi), your sorhors hold a very special place in our hearts. It is with this golden luv that I composed a poem in honor of you ladies.
RHOYAL WOMAN
(BY MERWIN “PRODIGAL SON” BROWN)

1922, who knew that this year would give birth to a sisterhood so pure, so true?
You see, in 1922, seven school teachers decided to reach us with a vision, no better yet a mission, given to them by divine intervention
To light a torch and spread the fire of hope and desire
Into the hearts of young women so that they can see the future, be the future, and lead the future generations during a time when our nation was still facing the challenge of changes
But that was then, this is the present and it’s evident that the love you women carry in your hearts is heaven sent
You understand that the works you do, are not only for yourself but also for the community
So that the seeds of goodwill will grow fruitfully
Fostering a sense of unity, so little girls can sit and dream, “one day I want to be a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority!”
Woman, with the strength you possess you must be blessed.
You strive to achieve nothing but the best, you never settle for less
The road you trod is nothing but a test
But you will be victorious because you believe in “greater service, greater progress”.
The fear of God is in your hearts, you answer to no man
You’re a queen to be, a living legacy, and forever and always to me……

A Rhoyal Woman

Fraternally yours,

Brother Merwin Brown.

Thank you Iotas for the love

Prodigalson of Iota Phi Theta, I just want to say thank you for the beautiful poem and that you represent what a real fraternity man is all about, showing respect and giving love, and recognizing the differences that each organization brings. I have been an SGRho since 91, and I have heard a lot of mean comments about my sorority. I appreciate that you recognize our beauty, intelligence and service to community. Everytime I meet someone, they automatically assume that I am DST or AKA, because I am pretty. To me, that is insulting, because they act like I am not the norm, and that SGRhos do not represent beauty and class. I don't know why we are disliked so much and really don't care. We have done nothing but show love and respect for everyone. In Sept. 05, my daughter was wearing a t-shirt that said that she was going to be an SGRho when she grew up, and while visiting her dad, his friend who is a Kappa approached her and told her that SGRho is the least of the sororities that she should join and that she should choose a better sorority when she grows up. I feel that this is very inappropriate, because this guy didn't know me and he doesn't know how that may have influenced my daughter's opinion about SGRho and her mom's choice to be in this sorority. I happened to run into this guy at a classic and he couldn't believe how beautiful I was and couldn't keep his eyes off of me. Then I confronted him about his statements to my daughter and he became very indignant and admitted to saying it and that he still believes that SGRhos are sorry, fat and ugly, and that he has a big problem with us. I can't understand for the life of me what we could have possibly did to any other organization to get this kind of response. Every sorority and fraternity has people of all shapes, sizes, colors and differences; so why are we singled out? In addition, if I have on paraphanilia, people look at me as if I am from mars or something. I have been on campuses where there are only DSTs or AKAs and I was the only SGRho, but they were so surprised at how pretty and lady like I am and that I actually was an SGRho, that they had to nerve to question why I had joined SGRho or they made the statement that I just made the wrong choice. I have had men and women approach me and question my decision for joining SGRho and I am constantly told that I look and act like an AKA and could have easily been admitted if I had tried. These types of responses are derogatory and people don't realize how offensive they are. So, I have to give praise where praise is due. Thank you for the love and thank you for recognizing our distinctive, classy and elegant qualities. Also, in 91, we were real tight with the Iotas as well. I dated an Iota when I was on line and am glad to see that the love still exist.

SigmaPearl00 11-01-2005 04:56 PM

I think I shed a tear! That was so very touching and I loved it! That is also the first time I have heard my sorority be praised to that degree and I appreciate you for that. I too am mistaken or looked at kinda crazy when I report to other greeks that I chose Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. I am always mistaken for an AKA or DST. But I will always and only be true to my GOLD and BLUE!!

msprissyroyal22 11-01-2005 05:13 PM

I am sure that many of our Sorhors could report the same thing that you and I have regarding being mistaken for other sorority members. That just go to show you that we have it going on and that people should not generalize or stereotype people. Additionally, I would just like to pose the question of what are the characteristics of an SGRho, DST, AKA or ZPB? If someone could explain that to me, that will really help me out. I am constantly told that I have the characteristics of an AKA, but what are those characteristics? I am not putting in sorority down, just trying to get clarification on what the distinctive characteristics are and how people can just look at you and judge which sorority you look like you are a member of.

SigmaPearl00 11-01-2005 05:54 PM

I don't know what the "GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS" are supposed to be for any Sorority. All I know is, I love my sorority and I would not change a thing. I would hope that people are accepted for who they are and what they want to do for the sorority. Not for what they look like. But I do sadly understand what kind of world we live in. (People are constantly judged by what they look like). STEREOTYPES!

It's all just really ignorance and I don't really care either. I have heard the same comment from men (and it usually is always men  who make the ignorant comments). Why would you ASSume that I am an AKA?? Because I am attractive and my conversation and personality (according to those who don't know me well) comes off as being "stuck up". I am so tired of hearing this.

Most who make these ignorant assumptions are not very well-traveled or exposed.

Soror, I'm sorry that this has happened to you. The statements that you have heard I am fortunate to not have heard. My daughter wears the same shirt. Her teacher is an AKA. We joke all the time (well she started it ;)) I am surrounded by AKA's and DST's and everything else. I guess I carry myself in a way that some would think twice before approaching me with some bull sh-- ignorant statement.

I have yet to meet one Soror who was "sorry, fat and ugly"

Thank You

I hear you all

Hey Sorhors,
Thanks for the responses. These are true accounts of what I have experienced over the years. There is this one guy that I know and everytime I have contact with him, he makes a joke about SGRho. I questioned this guy about his hatred for our sorority and his response is always, yes the sorority with the big girls. I hate being around people that like to make us the butt of some people's jokes. Okay, we are not the largest or most popular, but every sorhor that I have met has been classy, intelligent and down to earth. I rather be humble and have the Love of God in my heart, and show respect to my fellow man/woman, than to walk around with this condescending attitude thinking that I am God's gift to greekdom.

bro_strawter 12-08-2005 05:15 AM

While I have a great respect for all the sororities of the D9, and greeks in general, I must say that Sigma Gamma Rho has always been my favorite. As a freshman in '96 at TSU, I will honestly say that the ladies of Alpha Beta was the first to assist me, and offer me guidance. I found that quite intriquing, especially considering the fact that they had no idea my mother was also a member of the sorority. I've always said that if I was female (in which I'm not) as far as a sorority is concerned, I would have only considered Sigma Gamma Rho. "Greater Service, Greater Progress" speaks volumes to me.

Keep up the good work, and continue to hold the visions of your founders in the highest of light.

quteepie22 12-08-2005 02:11 PM

About a year after I was inducted into Sigma, I spoke to a friend of mine who I hadn't spoken to in about a year and a half. We were on the phone talking for a while and I invited him to one of our events that we were having. I really did not know that he wasn't aware that I was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho and I kept saying that we were having a fundraiser and we this and we that (referring to Sigma) and he asked "who is we? are you referring to you and James (my husband)". I quickly responded, no Sigma Gamma Rho. After I said that he was shocked and responded with " You are a Rho.I would have never thought you were interested in Sigma Gamma Rho, I thought probably Delta maybe but not SGRho". I was very offended and I asked him why he would think like that. He really had no answer and said "Well, the Rhos are cool too". (Yeah he kept calling us Rhos!!)

It really bothers me too when others make it seem as if Sigma Gamma Rho is second best to other sororities. Most of the time, I just brush it off my shoulders and wear my letters proud because in my heart I know the truth, my sorors know the truth as do our supporters. We are very beautiful (in every sense of the word), strong and intelligent women (just to name a few of our qualities). Whoever can't see that is really blind.

I LOVE SIGMA!!!!

The fact that others don't "get it" is what makes us so special.;)

I had a class with an Omega who looked at my t-shirt and said, "you must be really smart. I thought you had to be smart to get into that sorority."

I've observed as a teacher (and from my own experience growing up) it is always that super smart kid who sits alone, not following the crowd, that gets hated on the most.

I HATE HATE HATE being called a Rho...I've hung on many a misguided man (several who were Greek themselves) for referring to me or my beloved sorority as "Rho"...

I blame the Phi Betas for this...if they chose to use their first letter like everyone else we wouldn't have this confusion.
