Digital Camera Advice Needed!
Hello everyone! I need your help!
I've been using an ancient Kodak digital camera for the past two years, so it's time for an upgrade. I take my camera almost everywhere and I'm looking for a small, yet powerful camera. I don't need anything fancy schmancy, just a simple point and shoot. I want a camera that I can easily pop in my pocket when I go hiking, or in my small purse when I go dancing with friends. Any suggestions? I've been looking at the Canon SD300 and the Kodak Easyshare LS753. I would love to hear from anyone who has experience with either of these cameras, or any other models you really recommend. Thanks so much!!! ~J |
I like my Nikon Coolpix. It's really small, and the pictures look good.

I have the sd300 and love love love it! anything specific you want to know?
|
The more I read about the Canon SD300, the more I'm leaning towards buying it. Is it pretty easy to upload the pictures onto your computer? How is the picture quality?
I read on some sites that they recommend buying a second battery so you don't have to wait as one recharges. How is the battery life? Thanks! :D |
I have a Kodak EasyShare CX7430. It's a 4 megapixel camera, so I'm not sure if you need one that high. But it's cute, light (for a 4 MP camera), and takes pretty good shots.

The Canon Powershot ELPH is a great camera -- 5.0 megapixel (so you get great shots) and it's so tiny you can fit it in your pocket. Bonuses: auto-flash & red-eye reduction, dedicated print/share button, so getting pics is easy, comes in pretty colors.
Casio EXILIM 5.0 - great shots w/ 5.0 megapixels and even skinnier than the Canon ELPH Fuji FinePix 4.1 - smaller than the above 2 cameras, but costs just as much.. if it were me, I would just go with a 5.0 MP Sony T-1 5.0 MP is a newer camera, great crisp shots, and a very thin design so you could definitely pop it in a pocket or purse. It also has a great LCD screen to preview pictures or video There is also a company coming out with a "Flat Photo" (or do they spell it "Foto" ?) camera... supposedly it's really thin, but I dont remember which Mfr. it was from DXG-305V 5-in-1 Digital Companion—3.3MP Digital Camera, Video Camcorder, MP3 Player, Voice Recorder and PC Camera -- this was a top-selling item not too long ago. If you're looking for versatility, if you don't think you'll need 5 MP, and you want a compact design, I would recommend this one. However, for me -- if I'm going to invest in a new camera, I would go "all out" and invest in a really good one w/ a ton of MP, but that's just me :) |

- picture quality is amazing! it even has a macro zoom that gets the tiniest details :) the guy at best buy said 4.0 is all you need unless you are enlarging beyond 8x11 .. which I'm generally not. he said anything above 4 makes no diff unless you are blowing it up huge - battery life is AMAZING! my old camera used to eat batteries like crazy and this has the longest battery life ever. I charge it every few WEEKS and I take pix all the time. Also, it charges fully in an hour or 2.. second battery is a waste I highly highly recommend this camera -- it's tiny, has a big window and I love the features. Only downside? sometimes the flash is too bright, but i'm sure theres a way to fix that (plus there are all different settings -- i'm prob not using the right one) and you can turn the flash off. |
My mom is a graphic artist and she SWEARS by Canon cameras. She has one that has 12x zoom--talk about pictures with quality!
Some of her pictures are posted on my MYSpace site--the ones of St. Croix....check it out. If u need more advice, PM me. http://www.myspace.com/ulchiocutie |

I would love to get one of the really thin digital cameras but i dont know which ones are good. dont want anything really fancy. just as long as it takes good pictures. suggestions anyone?
|
I've read that Canon and Sony are the best in digital cams. Consumer Reports is a good resource for this too. Those flat ones are cool. Anyway good luck ! Dig cams are so fun.

thanks to the Walking Infomercial aka WineNSilverBlue advice, I just bought a Canon sd300
Yeah, so those douches at Canan gave me a 16mb memory card. I can take 6 pictures with it. Gag me with a spoon. Now I have to spend another 50-100 bux to get a dope memory card? I guess i gotta whore myself on Sunset. |
It's not that bad -- you can get a decent memory card for about 20-35 bucks depending on how much space you want. But yeah, that was the one thing that annoyed me about my camera too.

Another glowing endorsement of the Canon Digital ELPH series. I love mine--it's smaller than a pack of cigarettes, and takes amazing pictures.
Sony is also a great camera maker---I took one to SE Asia when I was there this past winter. I used the VGA setting, which is primarily for screen (lowish resolution) display, as it allowed me to take 170 pictures on each Memory Stick. They look amazing onscreen, and are even pretty good printed out (4 by 6 inches). For full resolution pics, the results are just as good. |
My grandmother just gave me her digital camera - a Canon PowerShot S400. She is completely anti-technology and never used it. The thing is, the only thing she gave me was the camera. No box, no book, nothing. I have been playing with it trying to figure everything out and now the "low battery" signal is starting to show.
Does anyone know anything about these cameras? Do I just need to buy a battery or am I going to need to get a charger? I asked my grandmother but she has no idea and says if anything else came with the camera - she didn't know where it was. This is my first digital camera, so I am just as clueless as my grandmother! HELP! |

I just want to reiterate what I said in the other camera threads. Cameras are not little computers so I don't understand why people want tiny cameras. I would get a good 5 megapixel camera with a good lens. I'm very happy with my Panasonic Lumix camera that uses a Leica lens given that those Zeiss lenses go for thousands of bucks. Sony's lenses are not special lenses so it's a marketing ploy. What I am trying to figure out is how much it would cost to get a camera that can take night pictures. I don't know enough about that and every digital camera I have seen has some issues with graininess or not focusing well enough at night. I don't know if it gets better once you move out of the $500 range and if I have time I'll try and look for some website that has info. -Rudey |

http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/con...2&modelid=8777 I googled the name of your camera and the word instructions. I hope this helps. This page has instruction manuals: http://alpha02.c-wss.com/inc/ApplServlet?SV=WWUCA900 |
My dad has the 770 and he loves it - he took it with him to Alaska and the pictures turned out awesome.
10 megapixels, however, is a little overkill if all you're going to do is print or order 4x6s. If you are doing 8x10s or poster-sized, however, the quality with the 770 is going to be a lot higher than cameras with fewer megapixels. If you find a particularly beautiful landscape and want to frame it I'd go with the 770. |
