Founders Day

Since Founders Day is coming up and alumnae associations/chapters are holding their annual luncheons I thought it might be fun to start a thread and sisters could discuss how their luncheon went.

Ours is this Saturday and I'm always looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to seeing another Delta Gamma sister who I haven't seen in years. I'm so excited to see her again!!!!!! I'm also excited to see other DG alums, alums in general and meet some of the Gamma Rho collegians.

I love participating in Jewel Degree and I'm excited to do that.

I just look forward to Founders Day.

Plus, I get to wear my new pin with my guard and I'm excited to do that.

polarpi 04-28-2005 03:17 AM

I love Founders' Day, and part of me is excited - but it'd be better to ask me when it's all over! :D ;)

CougADPi 04-28-2005 11:38 AM

I posted part of this under "random" but I'll post it here too! Upsilon had its Founder's Weekend last weekend. It was lots of of fun. My big D and her Big D were there as well as one of my little ones (and all her littles). I think we figured out that there were 7 generations of our "family" there last weekend. (We're going to post pictures on VV eventually) It was really cool since my Big has been in Europe for the past couple years so I haven't really seen her in quite awhile!

We did Jewel Degree (for 4 new Pi's) and Alpha Ceremony (for 1 new Alpha) which was fun. Its been awhile since I have been to an Alpha Ceremony and apparently we have been doing it wrong (!?!?) so it was interesting to see it done "right". We also had a formal dinner that night at the house (which looks even more amazing in person...I had only seen the completed remodel in pictures). Sunday we did the 50 year ceremony for the 1955 pledge class. Unfortunately only one member could make it, but it was moving none-the-less.

Next year we (the Pi's) are hoping to out number the collegiates at Founder's Weekend. Only about 6 of us were there, so we are going to try and work on spreading the word better!

Ok, this is long! Sorry! :)

scho5148 04-28-2005 01:28 PM

Denver AA will be holding a Founders' Day brunch on Saturday, May 14. This year we will be offering Jewel Degree. I believe we have 3 people receiving it. Last year we performed the 25- & 50-year Ceremonies. (We actually had a member celebrate her 75th ADPi anniversary in 2003!) We plan to rotate the anniversary ceremonies and Jewel Degree every other year.

I'll let you know how everything goes!

I read this in Random and since you're posting here, I'll ask -
If these young women go thru the Alpha Ceremony at Founder's Day, how long is their Alpha Period???? Does school go another 4-6 weeks past Founder's Day? (Where I advise, the collegians are in Finals or near to it when we hold Founder's Day.)

ASUADPi 04-29-2005 08:59 AM

They might be a carry over for the fall. I remember there was a girl we offered a bid to in the spring 98. She accepted but she was a carry over to the fall. If memory serves that is when she actually participated in her Alpha ceremony (with the other Alphas from FR).

Question: is Alpha ceremony "required" to be done as soon as the girl accepts her bid? If it is (b/c it is too early as I type and my brain isn't working this early) some chapters do COR up until almost the last day of school, if the ceremony is required then you would have to do it, even though everyone knows that the NM would be carry overs til the fall.

I'm not sure if I'm making any sense at all. That is what I get for trying to type things at 5:55 in the morning.

skerbow 04-29-2005 09:55 AM

Alpha Ceremony must be completed within the first week of accepting a bid. I think it might even be within the first 48 or 72 hours. I can't remember the exact requirement. But yes it is. So they most likely are carring her over until the fall. Or they could be doing what UNT did many years ago. They take a few girls in late spring, intiate them over the summer and they can actively participate in recruitment. UNT has done it both ways, but the summer initiation seems to work well, most of the time.

Yeah, she will carry over to the fall and will most likely do Alpha Education with the Formal Recruitment Class. I was a Spring carryover as well. Its quite common with Upsilon who excels at COR! :)

MiamiADPi 04-30-2005 03:45 PM

Gamma Delta had our Founders' Day luncheon today and it went very well. The Ft. Lauderdale and Miami AA's are amazing and we're so lucky to have their unbelievable support. Our graduating seniors took part in Jewel Degree and they will be missed terribly. We also had to say goodbye to our fabulous TCC who was with us since August when we began our recolonization. She was instrumental in our development and growth as a chapter. Of course we'll still keep in touch, but it won't be the same without her next year. I hope we make her and all of ADPi proud as we continue to develop and strengthen our sisterhood.

(I just want to brag about one of our graduating sisters who was awarded "Most Outstanding Senior Woman" at the University of Miami. She is truly outstanding and brilliant. I know she will go far in life and bring joy to all those around her. I'm so proud to call her my sister.)

Also, last night we had Black Diamond Formal at the Raleigh Hotel on South Beach. A good time was had by all.

These two events were a perfect closing to a year full of wonderful memories and new friendships. As much as I'm looking forward to summer back home in NY, I know I'll be counting the days until I'm back in Miami with the best sisters a girl could ask for. I began the school year feeling out of place and alone in a school of 10000, and now having come home to Alpha Delta Pi, have 87 sisters who I treasure with all my heart.

"These are the moments, I thank God that I'm alive. These are the moments, I'll remember all my life. I've found all I've waited for... and I could not ask for more."

I just got back from the Phoenix Alumnae Association/Gamma Rho founders day and it was fantastic.

Our speaker is director of the RMH in Phoenix and she was amazing. I totally want to volunteer there. (On a side note I went by RMH and got a tour, some of the rooms were decorated by coporations or individuals and I decided that ADPi needs to decorate a room).

I got to see two Delta Gamma sisters and I was so happy to see them again.

I got to see my friend Amy, who I just saw in March at her wedding but she hasn't been to an alum event in over a year, so that was really nice.

Plus, I found out that a Gamma Rho senior has been selected to be a TCC. So to all you collegians out there, you might get a Gamma Rho TCC next school year (and for the life of me I can't remember her name).

All in all Founders day went extremely well and ran smoothly.

FirstAndFinest 05-03-2005 08:55 AM

I'm exhausted!

I helped out with Jewel Degree for two chapters on Sunday! First, I drove down to Philadelphia to help out at Eta Chi (Villanova). The chapter had a lovely brunch and then all 4 alumnae present conferred Jewel upon 15 graduates.

Then, I drove out to Staten Island, NYC, for a Tea Party-themed Founder's Day. There, we had 6 alumnae to perform Jewel for another 15 seniors.

I really felt good about being able to help out! (HX was a last minute plan.) I am very excited about picking up 5 new members for our alum chapter!! One of whom wants to take on a position!! YEA!!!

Well, Founders' Day for me was bittersweet. It was really hectic being in charge of everything and running around like a chicken with my head cut off :D, but then I also was having to be strong for my girls, too.

But, how many people can say they've had the International President at their Founders' Day celebrations?

Excellent!!! Hope you (or someone) took lots of pictures!! Having Mrs Goddard there is something to shout from the mountain top - hope the collegians put that in their chapter-alumnae newsletter (and if they don't already have one, that would make a great start for one)!

Our historian may have done so - I unfortunately didn't bring my camera (after a long debate, I decided not to, but I wish I would have)

One of the chapters will probably do so, but we'll have to wait and see :)

honeychile 05-08-2005 09:30 PM

Those chapters who can hold Jewel Degree and Founders' Day at the same time are soooo lucky!! We have Jewel Degree towards the beginning of April, and will celebrate Founders' Day next weekend.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is that there is ALWAYS at least one senior who is behind on her financial obligations, but can't understand why she can't receive JD because of it. It's heartbreaking from the Alumnae point of view, but we would be shirking our responsibility if we went ahead and did it otherwise. *sigh*

I doubt very much if it applies to anyone here, but if you're a senior in arrears, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE talk to your alumnae, and at the very least, get a payment plan started!! Not only will you NOT be able to receive Jewel Degree without it, but the whole Chapter will be ineligible for Diamond Four-Point!!

nauadpi 05-10-2005 03:16 AM

I am looking forward to going to a founders day luncheon on Sunday. My chapter never did anything for founders day because we ended school before it and there was no local alum association. So I am so excited to be able to go to one this year. It is being held by the Peninsula Alum Association and the Silicon Valley Alum Association. Also we are getting the chance to recognize multiple alumnae reaching 25 and 50 years of membership.

emleepc 05-10-2005 10:09 AM

My chapter never did anything for Founder's Day either.....but this is something I would like to see done in the future. Hopefully I can help pull this off.....

honeychile 05-10-2005 11:11 AM

Actually, this will be the first time I've been to a Founders Day celebration in May! Since my chapter got out of school in early April, we usually held Founders Day in February (when our chapter was founded).

FirstAndFinest 05-10-2005 07:19 PM

I'm seriously considering driving on Sunday to my chapter of initiation to help with Jewel Degree. It's a 4-hour drive - each way! If I leave by 8AM, I can get there for 12, have lunch, Founder's Day, then Jewel Degree. I can probably be back on the road (I-95) by 2-3 and home by 6-7.

Am I insane???? (scroll up - I went to 2 different chapters last Sunday, in 2 different states, neither in the state in which I live!)

Oh, the things we do for sisterhood! No, I don't think you are insane. If that is what you really want to do then go for it. Do you happen to have anyone that will ride with you, so it doesn't seem long and boring?

skerbow 05-11-2005 10:04 AM

Nope, you're not insane. If I was in TX, I'd be doing the same.

In UT, I don't get to attend a founder's day. This will be the first year without one for me in 7 years.

This just got me thinking - any way we can do an online Founders Day celebration? Ideas?

FirstAndFinest 05-14-2005 10:59 AM

OK, I'm going up to my chapter to help with Jewel Degree! My DH thinks it's strange that I'm driving more than twice as long as I'll actually be there, but he's used to me coming & going at all hours for ADPi!

There will only be a handful of us Pi's but this will be the first Founder's Day & Jewel Degree "in recent memory," as the email stated. I think that's an understatement! I'd never heard of Founder's Day/Jewel Degree during my collegiate years. I have no reason to believe it was brought back in the interim, either. I am so happy to be bringing back this tradition that has been "lost" at my chapter for so long.

Oh - and I didn't find any other sisters able to go up on such short notice, so I'm going up by myself. I think I'll pop in that ADPi CD from the Alpha Pi Chapter and sing ADPi songs to myself the whole way up! (what a SIGHT that will be at 8AM on a Sunday... hehehehe!)

Founders' Day 2006

I got to experience my first Founders' Day at Upsilon today (4/22/06). I also went through Jewel Degree (after only being a Delta for 2 whole days). It was fun, and the ceremony was great! Though I'm going to have to see if I can get more info on it.

I'm looking forward to coming back in August to help my chapter out w/ Formal. I am DEFINITELY coming back in April for Founders' Day 2007 (as an alumna). I can't wait to go through Jewel Degree for the graduating seniors!

ASUADPi 04-22-2006 11:45 PM

Our Founders Day is next week. I'm so excited. He he.

So, because Brianna's a dork (but y'all love me :D) I'm going to list the reason I'm excited...

1) I get to wear my pin!!!!

2) I get to do Jewel Degree and Carrie is going through, which is so exciting!!!!

3) I get to see sisters that I haven't seen since either convention or Christmas.

4) Our guest speaker is an ADPi (woo hoo)

and last but not least...

5) I get to take all the stuff we collect to RMH. That just brings warm fuzzies to my heart knowing we are helping them out. I love our philanthropy!!!!!!!

erikasue 04-22-2006 11:50 PM

I had to borrow a pin from a sister b/c I haven't gotten mine yet. This is a crazy story for me but I actually went through alpha-neophyte-delta-pi in about 8 weeks. My big and I BOTH went through Jewel Degree together. LOL

Jewel was rather interesting. Wish I could get what was said in writing b/c I want to remember what it all meant. :)

Yeah, unfortunately you won't get your pin for awhile and it will probably got to your NMC (at the house) instead of you directly. (That is how mine was). The pins take a good 8 weeks to make. A mini hijack- which pin did you chose?

I've done Jewel Degree so many times that I almost have it memorized. I adore doing Jewel Degree. It's one of my favorite things to do in the spring and fall.

I guess I qualify as an ADPi dork, too! I'm going up to my chapter AGAIN this year!! The sister who is chapter advisor with me, and driving up to Quinnipiac with me this WED, is going to drive up to RI with me on SUN, too!

Then the next SUN I'm going to give Jewel again, at the chapter I advise. We'll have 5 alums, which is kinda sad considering how many of that chapter's alums live on that same island!

Then 5/21 we're trying like crazy to get more alums to the NJ founder's day and jewel. I have 2 alumnas who want to receive the degree and 3 to confer it. If anyone knows any NJ-area alumnae who would be interested in attending, PLEASE pm me!

Bump

I'm heading to Eta Chi tomorrow for a Founders' Day Tea & Jewel Degree! I'm soo excited because I found a bunch of violets in the park today. I'm going to dig some up, put in small pot and bring 'em along! I'm really excited about this bc the women I met at Preference were so nice and intelligent and very appreciative of all the alums there.

Unfortunately, I just couldn't go to FD that was for today. As it stands now, I'll go out there for Jewel in a couple weeks.

I'm trying to find a location for the Alumnae's FD/JD... date's 3 weeks away, what am I waiting for?!

ASUADPi 04-28-2007 09:27 PM

I had such a wonderful time at Founders Day.

I got to see a sister, who I haven't seen in a while, and she's pregnant and I was so excited for her!

We raised $575 for RMH and I couldn't have been more thrilled! Sisters really stepped to the plate. Tables started competing with each other and who could get the most money. LOL.

I got to talk to a member of GC and that was awesome.

I just love FD!!!!!

polarpi 04-28-2007 11:08 PM

I'll update you guys next Sunday about our FD here - I've been trying to get organized and finding out which seniors of the chapter here are planning to go through Jewel Degree, then get those names to the chairperson of JD, and I have to remember that I said I'd bring a raffle prize, and...and...and :p

honeychile 04-29-2007 12:06 AM

I saw this for Mother's Day, and thought, they would be perfect for Founders Day centerpieces! I'm sure that they could be easily made.

Aren't they cute?

What do you do to raise money at FD?

I just dug up a bunch of wild violets from the park & planted in a little pot! SO CUTE! I just love FD and Jewel!!!!

I mentioned to a sister who would be talking that we needed to remind sisters about the donation to RMH. I wanted to raise money to buy the house pots and pans. Well this sister told the sisters at founders day. She had been at the house for the pancake breakfast in March and had seen firsthand how little the house had. So we just told the ladies that they needed the money and they rose to the occasion!!!

Poor FD, I hope you feel better soon!

Our Founders' Day went well yesterday - had approximately 45 women there, new positions (I found myself "moved up" to VP of the association now!), and a lot of fun. 9 of the local seniors, and another woman who never went through Jewel Degree when she graduated went through the ceremony, which was great - a total of 9 alums stayed, so we did the women in two groups, and most of the first women through the ceremony helped out the second time! :)

She's been warned! Once you get Cheryl going, she's a ball of fire - she was President one year, and Sister of the Year another!
