Knitting: new campus fad?
_LOGAN, Utah (AP) - Utah State University student Mike Vilven is minding his knitting -- literally. He crochets wristbands for his frat brothers in Sigma Chi. He also made a ski hat he can wear with his Air Force R-O-T-C uniform. Vilven is one of a growing number of young knitters in the Logan, Utah, area. Vilven says needlework is the perfect thing for relaxation. He says it's a way to be productive while doing nothing. Vilven admits he took some ribbing from his frat brothers over his knitting. But Vilven tells the Herald Journal they soon stopped laughing and wanted him to make something for them, too.

In the fall semester, the chapter of KKG here would knit in the freshman girls dorms once a week. They invited the girls to join them and used it as a sort of recruitment event. :) I had a bunch of AXiDs in a class once, and they always used to knit in class. I'm not sure it's a "fad", though.

If I lived in Logan, Utah, I'm sure I'd be knitting too.
Actually, I want to learn how to knit or crochet. It seems like fun. |
I love knitting. I've made scarves for a few of my sisters and am working on a blanket for my big.
|
I too love knitting... I make a lot of presents for people...
I also thought I would add that for a while much of my chapter had been doing needlepoint... But back to knitting... Currently more people are coming out about doing it and as a result more people are wanting to learn... |
i suspect it's relaxing

My grandmother taught me how when I was a lot younger... but recently I've taken it up again - if only to repair/alter some of the things she knitted me. |
I would like to learn, but the people I know who know how to knit can't figure out how to teach a left handed person!
|
I'm not Greek, and I can't knit (although I'm pretty good at other kinds of arts and crafts), but my friend who IS Greek actually knitted me a pair of slippers. They're really cute :)
|
I knit... and I enjoy how many teachers are so fascinated by it that they ask me questions about how I learned instead of asking me to stop when I knit in their classes.
I've also seen a few girls knitting during chapter because we all know it can be LONG sometimes! :) |
I want to learn! Is it something you can learn from a book or is it better to have some one teach you?
|
Another knitter here. :) It is very relaxing, right up until you discover you've been decreasing by the wrong amount for the last 20 rows, and you have to rip it allll out and do it again. :p But if you're doing something nice and straightforward, it's a great thing to do with your hands while you're watching TV or chatting with friends.

woohoo!
I LOVE KNITTING! All my things come out lopsided. But, hey, it's so much fun!
|
A real person is best for learning to knit, but if you're looking for a book, I recommend Stitch n' Bitch: The Knitters' Handbook by Debbie Stoller. I learned from it, and am still picking up useful ideas from it.
Happy knitting! |
a girl on my floor tried to get a "knitting night" on our floor every week. Sadly it never hapned becasue most people are anti school spirit and would never do anything with people from the floor.
|
i knit and cross stich. i've done stuff for my tri delta family, my fav is a knitted pillow with our pledge pin cross stitched on. it gets passed down (or hopefully it will be when my little finally gets a little)
|
I knew how to knit once. I made a really short scarf :-)
I do know how to sew though... |
I knew how to knit when i was younger, forgot and tried to learn from a book. I could do the stitches but what i did either was too tight or too loose. I never figured out who to get inbetween. I don't really have the time now so maybe when life settles down i can find someone to help me.
I do find this tread funny. I read this book about telling if a school is a party school or not by seeing how many frat parties vs. how many knitting circles where on campus. Nice to hear that college students actually do knit. And in class. I think that would get someone introuble, interesting. |
I don't knit but there are a lot of women on the train I take who knit on the way home.
|
Crocheting is awesome, I love it! I'm the only person I know under the age of 40 who does it, though.
|
Our Panhellenic council did an All Sorority Social which involved knitting in rocking chairs. :)
|
I've started knitting. It really is a great way to relax. I'm not very good at it, but I'm getting better.
I haven't heard of too many guys knitting though. |
My old roommate knits, she did scarves for family for xmas. I never really had an interest in it, but my grandmother taught me to cross stitch and I loved it. I made something for my little brother when he was born(19 years ago) that we still have somewhere. I was 8 years old at the time, and so proud of myself!
|
I have always wanted to learn to knit or sew but I don't have a lot of patience to sit and do something repetitive. Is it easy to learn?

I like crocheting and knitting both, but my real passion is needlepoint. I want to retire so I can just sew all day.
(from the way teachers are leaving around here, it might be sooner than I had anticipated. ) |
**BUMP**
I'm bumping this thread because I just started knitting!! I like it so far, but it's not as easy as I thought it would be. Any tips?? |
Start with scarves. Get the knit stitch down until you can do it in your sleep :) Then do the same with the purl stitch. Christmas presents of scarves are easy and fun (And if you use the fancy yarn can be cute)
My biggest accomplishment is a hat. Look for really easy patterns on the websites of yarn companies once you feel like you can follow one. |
Find a knitting store that will help you out. I couldn't have done most of my projects without the owner of a local store. She fixes all my mistakes, helps with the hard parts, etc.
Also, stay away from socks and mittens until you really know what you are doing. I found them both very hard. |
I just got into knitting too. My mum taught me years ago, but I didn't like it when I was a teenager, plus I had a difficult time with it and tended to give up easily on things back then.
Anyways, I just picked it up again last weekend: my alumnae chapter was knitting scarves and mitts for a local charity for one of our service projects. I had such a fun time with it, my mum gave me some needles and yarn over the long weekend, and I've been practicing away (casting on and knitting). I find it's great while watching tv; I need to be doing something, and usually I just snack if I get bored. Plus, it's a great way to keep my stress levels down while watching hockey - I wonder if I will look like a total weirdo if I bring my knitting to GM Place  . Once I get half decent I want to knit some mice for my kittens - I believe the pattern was in the Stich N' Bitch book. |

I agree with lauralaylin. A lot of knitting or general needlework stores offer classes, and that's a great way to learn. Or see if you can find a relative or friend to teach you; I learned from my mother.
I knit mostly simple projects. The most complex thing I've knitted is a cardigan. I'm currently working on a baby blanket for a friend of mine who's just had her first baby... it's a 4x3 grid of 12"x12" squares. (The squares are knitted; I just have to get around to sewing them together, hopefully before the kid goes to college. ) If there's anyone close to you who's expecting a baby, that's a great project. Or, you can make a 4x6 grid of 12"x12" squares as an afghan. You can knit every row (garter stitch), alternate knit and purl rows (stockinette stitch), or try a simple pattern like ribbing. |
my grandma taught me how to crochet, embroider (by hand), sew and needlepoint when i was growing up... i use to make lil baby scarfs for my barbies and everything.
i took it back up again when my grandma passed away last year. my grandma use to make these beautiful afghans for my family, whenever someone was expecting a baby. i still have mine, from when i was born. she'd put so much time and love into it, it was so great watching her making it... when i found out that my closest cousin was pregnant, i decided to take over my grandma's tradition, and started making her an afghan. it's still not complete - but she's not due for another month. i know it will mean a lot to her, and if my grandma was still here, i know how proud she'd be. |
I'd love to make a scarf, or an afghan one day! But I'm still working on a little square . . .
I've heard that crochet is easier than knitting, so if I'm unsuccessful with knitting I'll definetly be going back to the craft store to buy some crochet materials! |
