When I first heard them say that the College of Cardinals had chosen Joseph Ratzinger, I was at work and the radio had a lot of static. I thought they said "John Ratzenberger" at first.

Yeah, are they limited to those names? I know someone who says she's a direct descendant of Pope Innocenti (I forget which number). I said that he couldn't have been too Innocent if he was fathering children while a pope.

Peaches-n-Cream 04-20-2005 01:08 AM

Am I wrong for being amused by Pope Dionysius? Was he sh80 also? ;)

From Mentalfloss.com's fact of the day-
They don't have to give up their birth name, but most of them do. The Pope is supposed to be a direct descendant of the apostle Peter, so most Popes take on another name to show that they are no longer a descendant of their parents, and that they are devoting their life to the church (so no worldly attachments).
:)

I'd be:

Pope Hilarius, so I could be 'the funny one'
Pope Stephen, so I could be 'Pope Steve!'
Pope Valentine, so I could be real popular on February 14. Guess hes the original funny Valentine.
Pope Lando, so people would think I was latin and exotic.
Pope Nicholas, so then I could be 'Pope Nick'

Kevlar281 04-20-2005 04:52 AM

I'd like to be 'Pope on a Rope.'

citydogisu 04-20-2005 09:02 AM

I think the word is supposed to be "successor," not "descendant." That said, the pope has the option of keeping his birth name, picking the name of a previous pope, or choosing a "new" name (which in a sense, John Paul I did, since there had been no pope with a double name before.) Often the name of a favorite saint is chosen, or there is another sentimental reason. John XXIII chose the name John because it was his father's name and because the church he was baptized was dedicated to St John. Peter is the one name no pope would choose -- too presumptuous.

Actually, the tradition of taking a new name was started in 533 by John II. His birth name was Mercurius or Mercury, which of course was the name of a pagan god. That's why he changed it. The last pope to keep his given name as pope was Marcellus II in 1555.

As for me,

Pope Linus,
Pope Lupinus (to balance the Leos),
Pope John Boy,
Pope Guido, or
Pope Shamalamadingdong.

Maybe the first female, Southern pope could be Pope Aree.

epchick 04-20-2005 04:21 PM

If I had to chose one from the list it would probably
Pope Hilarious
or
Pope Blessed Innocent

But I rather choose a NEW name, and i'd be

Pope Alicious

So I can go around saying hi, I'm Pope Alicious lol. dont ask me, i'm wierd!! :D

If you were Pope Lando, I wouldn't think you were latin and exotic. I'd think you were a Star Wars geek.
