i hate COPS...

i am soooooo upset.

i am up here are marymount-fordham university in tarrytown and i was sitting in the car with my girlfriend and we were eating lunch. a police car pulls over as i am reclined in my seat with my foot propped up on the dash.

he steps out the car and asks to see my license. i am ask him is there a problem and he tells me yes.

he says that security officers called gave them my license plate because i and my girlfriend were harassing the students at the school.

mind you the stretch that the university is located on is deserted. there is no one walking around on the college.

of course i was like what?!?!?!?!

then he asks me if i am intoxicated. i tell him no. he asks me, what is in the cup. i told him it was coca-cola when popeye's. he actually looks in my cup and smells it.

so you know i am pissed now.

then he asked me if i've been smoking weed. i am like what?!?!? he said there were some flakes on my pants.

the freaking flakes with crumbs from me eating chicken strips in my car.

then i asked him, was the reason he asked me if i was smoking weed because i have loccs or was it the facted that i had on one of my collector bon marley t-shirts. dude, said maybe.

needless to say, all i was doing was coming to visit maymount-fordham to pursue some info on grad school. he let me go and asked me were he can get a shirt like the one i had.

i think that tarrytown can kiss my ass.

funny thing i get harassed like this alot because of my loccs. it's the same thing, just because i have loccs. cops assume i am the dancehall queens of ganja.

anyone else constant harassed by one- time?

I'm really sorry that this guy was a dick and he did this to you.

AchtungBaby80 04-18-2005 08:48 PM

Cops seem to think that all persons under the age of 25 are either drunk or stoned...all the time. That's the first question they ask you when they pull you over, no matter what the reason was that they pulled you over in the first place--"You been drinking?" "You high?" It ticks me off, too, to be honest. Once a cop pulled me over for not having my headlights all the way on (hey, the street was so well-lit I couldn't tell!) and became totally convinced that I had to be drunk because I happened to be wearing a cocktail dress. He gave me the 3rd degree, hoping to trip me up asking all these questions about where my parents lived, where I lived, what I'd been doing that night, why I had a Vera Bradley overnight bag in my truck, why I was out on the road, where I was going, etc., and then became frustrated when my "drunk" self, who was completely sober, answered everything correctly. Since he couldn't get me for a DUI, he wrote me a ticket instead. Jerk. :p

I'm gonna ask my cop friends why they treat cute girls like that. ;)

Optimist Prime 04-18-2005 09:25 PM

a cop got punched in the face and then some girl stole another cop's car this weekend. You should come to Radford

That policeman sounds like a jerk. I'm sorry you were harrassed like that :(

I think it's the power trips...

I know a kid that I graduated HS with that just became a cop. Needless to say I can easily see this kid doing shit like that just b/c it gives him an ego boost.

In the words of Eazy E...Fuck the police.

OMG, you did not just say that!

I really hope you are joking. That's like saying to a rape victim, "well you were wearing that really sexy dress...I'm sure the guy just thought you really did want to have sex".

HotDamnImAPhiMu 04-19-2005 09:58 AM

Actually it's not. How is this guy a victim? The cop was DOING HIS JOB. Let's review:

* SOMEBODY called in this guy's plate number. There was a problem to start with.

* They were sitting in the car, loitering near a school on the side of an otherwise deserted public road.

* The cop asked a number of completely reasonable questions: have you been drinking? doing drugs? etc. -- reasonable especially considering the cop had a complaint related to THAT PLATE NUMBER and these two are just kind of hanging out on the side of a deserted road.

* Buddha admits, yeah, he uses pot.

Okay so what's the problem here?

The cop assumed Buddha uses pot? HE ADMITS THAT IT'S TRUE! That Buddha thinks the cop may have based this assumption on the way he dresses/grooms? Buddha admits this has been a problem in the past -- if it bothers you, change it.

This is like people who speed, then get pissed they were pulled over. You were speeding! And then you were a dick to the cop, and you're shocked you got a ticket?

The cop was doing his job, which was to investigate a complaint. You're not going to convince me a pot-smoking guy just chillin at the side of the road in a car with a plate number that's been called in as harassing kids at a school is in the right on this one.

Sorry.

The Cops in KY SUCK! I feel your pain! They have nothing else to do so they pull over random people and interrogate them. It's wrong and something needs to be done about cops that are on a power trip!

These are both valid points. OP hasn't said whether or not they WERE harassing people at the school or what happened with that. People don't tend to report license plate numbers for no reason. And the OP didn't deny it.

Also, a cop is doing his job if he sees a car randomly pulled over on a deserted road with people in it. You could've been in distress, broken down, ill, being kidnapped or raped, or very logically smoking up.

cashmoney 04-19-2005 10:45 AM

Dude, you just have to understand that cops are those guys in highschool that always wanted to be cool and popular but never were. Thats their whole problem. Thats why they harass guys like me and people like you, they wanted to be like us but never could. Most of them are ultra-conservative and they all seem to have the mentality of "The bigger the bust the better the boost" Thats why they're always looking to nail someone for drugs. But the fucked up thing is that many of them just take your shit for themselves. Sometimes they'll let you go and other times they wont. I'm almost positive many of them pocket some of the drugs they arrest people for but leave just enough for evidence.

One thing I've learned, and any guy whos had to deal with plenty of cops, is that you can't win with those fuckers. Arguing with them isnt going help a bit. You just have to suck up, say yes-sir and deal with some bitchin. The only two options are either getting a fine or going to jail......and I don't want either.

We had an incident once where this cop my friend Travis knew from his half-sister's side of her family tried to give him shit one night while out at the beach. And it wasnt just him but all of us him and his cop buddies were talking shit to. And it all had to deal with custody rights to his sister. Well, we were drunk and travis and a couple other friends had GHB on them in eye drop bottles and all of us were trashed. So when the cop started running his mouth and his little shrimpy ass cops buddies started to act like they were going to stomp us....out conversation went like this:

Cashmoney: What, am I supposed to be intimidated because you have a badge?

Cop1: What did you just say?

Cashmoney: You heard me, doughnut muncher.

Cop2: Thats it, up against the wall. Put your hands behind your back.

Cashmoney: Oh, so now your going to handcuff me after all of you walk up to us and harass us over a family issue between one of us and one of your fellow cops. Wait untill the news stations find out about this (keep in mind this is right when Jacksonville was having horrible publicity for dirty cops and while another cop shot an innocent person as well as a sherriff deputy going on a shooting spree before killing himself and his wife)

Cop3: Wait. lets see some ID. (they don't cuff me)

Cop1: I think the best thing for you guys right now is to go home and don't come back to the beach for 6 months.

Cashmoney: Why are you trying to come at me as if you have some authority as to where I can and cannot walk.

Cop3: Hey, buddy, careers don't matter here. From one person to another, don't let us see you guys around here for awhile.

Cashmoney: (as I'm getting ready to walk away) No, trust me, careers do matter a lot right now. (they werent catching on to the fact that we'd stomp those fuckers in the ground if they didnt have badges)

After that told told us to get the fuck on. But thats one reason why I can't stand cops is because of shit like that. They abuse their authority for personal reasons. Even though I was drunk and it happened 2 years ago.....I still remember it clear as day and I don't think I'll ever forget that night.

cashmoney 04-19-2005 10:47 AM

First of all, she's a she. Second of all, what are the odds that this is actually true? I'm not sure how much experience you have with the criminal "justice" arena, but COPS MAKE UP BOGUS REASONS TO BOTHER PEOPLE ALL THE TIME ESPECIALLY IF SAID PEOPLE ARE BLACK. Whether or not someone smokes pot or has smoked pot in the past has NOTHING to do with stopping her NOW. A police officer must have PROBABLE CAUSE to stop and question someone, but the funny thing is that police make up probable cause all the time ("Someone called in your plates" or "You have a cracked tail light") even when it's bogus. What's worse is that once the police make a bogus stop and the case ends up in court, depending on where you are, the judge will ALMOST ALWAYS believe the police over the defendant, so if the cop says your tail light was cracked or someone called in your plates, even if it's not true, you're screwed.

Hold the fuck up....thats racist as shit. Who says they do it more to black people than white people? What figures are you basing these statements off of? I don't know about you, but I see more white people pulled over on the side of the road than I do black people. Half the black people out there can't even afford cars. And i'd be willing to bet that almost half of the black people that do have cars arent pulled over thinking they have drugs or a DWI.....it's because their tags are expired. Same goes with Mexicans. Just because you only see those people on COPS on FOX, that doesnt mean its mostly them who are pulled over.

I think most cops are smart enough to understand that if this is questioned, it's a pretty simple matter to examine records and see if there actually WAS a complaint called in.

Again, I think I'm okay with that. S/he was sitting in a parked car on the side of a deserted highway in a car matching the description of someone who was harassing students down the road.

And, to be honest, judging from the tone s/he used here, sounds like s/he was giving the cop shit, too.

I have no problem with the way the cop handled this situation.

WHAT DID YOU EXPECT TO HAPPEN?

Were you taught English?

There is nothing wrong about saying you work in geology.

There are a lot of people that serve in different roles that work in any field. In marketing, there are the number crunchers, there are the sales folks, and there are the creative people.

Not everyone lists every single detail of their job when they say what they do.

Of course her being a secretary doesn't make her an expert on criminal law. That is not an issue of language anymore. And if you want to nitpick, who in here is a criminal lawyer and an expert?

HotDamnImAPhiMu 04-19-2005 01:51 PM

and not in HR. My title is "secretary," so Rudey's right, I'm not an expert -- but, I do work with cops/agents/law enforcement specialists all the live long day. Between making pots of coffee I have picked up a few things.

And crossing my legs, perched on peoples' desks.

And sleeping with everyone when they're "working late".

i was taught english and here is an example

i work for an HR consulting and outsourcing firm. my firm does many things including the following
-Human resouce consulting
-workforce management
-payroll administration
-benefits administration

i specifically work in defined contribution plan administration and implementation. i would not say that i work in workforce management consulting even though the people in the offices one floor above me do. i do not know anything about it.

similarily, i used to work for General Electric. General Electric is a huge company that works in many different fields including regular household appliances, light bulbs, aircraft engines, medical technology, and network television (nbc). I specifically work in their industrial systems division in which they built basically large scale circuit brakers for for factories and nuclear power plants. but to be honest, i would say that i worked in factory planning and management, because thats what i did. to say anything else would be wrong.

i'm not trying to nitpick, nor am i saying that i am a criminal justice expert (where the heck did that come from anyway), but there is a HUGE difference between being a secretary and being a cop, DA, public defender, legal aid, paralegal, ect. I believe that is the point that Lil'Hannah and myself are making.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 04-19-2005 02:10 PM

My point is, there is a big difference, but I didn't say I was a cop -- I said I work in the field, which is certainly true. If you've ever worked in a police station, law enforcement field office, etc., you know the support positions aren't exactly just typing and coffee making. There's a reason I have a security clearance, and it's not because of my killer pencil sharpening skills.

I contribute to the cases, investigative reports, and I've had some of the same training the agents have -- they're sweethearts & know I'd like to stay in the field when I graduate (and am eligible,) so they offer to haul me along to the firearms range, handcuffing classes, etc.

At any rate, the question re: my experience seemed to center around how familiar I am with cops/agents/law enforcement personnel & their morals -- and I would say I'm a veritable EXPERT at that. :) I was raised by them, dated them, work with them, live with them.

AND I MAKE A KILLER POT OF COFFEE.

Being an expert at hanging around with cops does not make you an expert in the criminal justice field. Just so we're clear on that. I also can't help but wonder -- if you were raised by cops, hang out with cops, date cops, etc. -- whether you are somewhat biased in your assessments of police behavior.

Rudey 04-19-2005 02:23 PM

Again, there is nothing wrong with that statement.

If someone told me they did workforce management consulting yada yada yada yada, I would tell them to tell me what their field is a lot quicker.

I work in banking. If someone knows more about that field and wants to know what I do, I let them know I work with high grade fixed-income municipal products including long-term/short-term (floating rate), taxable and tax-exempt bonds as well as derivative solutions. But very rarely do I just drop a bombshell like that on even my relatives.

So this isn't about language and thus technically what she said is correct. As for how much she knows, she isn't an expert and I do not see any criminal lawyers in this thread who are experts and disagree with what she said.
