Dallas/Fort Worth Greeks
Hi everyone! I am moving June 1 to the Dallas, Texas area and I am still looking for apartments. Does anyone have any suggestions for apts in the downtown Dallas area that has reasonable rent? Also I don't know anyone in dallas since I am from Maryland, any suggestions on fun places to go and hang out or if any of you would want to hang out that would be awesome!
You can respond here or pm me. Thanks!!! Dawn |
I dont know about apartments, but I did spend my summers there growing up (my oldest sis lives there) and its a great town. Upper and Lower Greenville Avenue is a blast!
Get involved with you alum assn and you'll make friends fast. |
I'll also be in the Dallas area this summer. I have an internship@ Southern Methodist Univ.

Check your PM's Dawn.

Oh my NO!!!! You don't want to live downtown. Trust me. There are some very nice new loft spaces downtown, but you are surrounded by DOWNTOWN. Too dangerous. Don't do it unless you are willing to live behind bars and I don't mean the kind with a band!
Just accept that you will have a rotten commute every day. We all do :D |

Try ApartmentGuides.com
You can sort by price,# of bedrooms ect. |
I live 20 mins outside of Dallas, but I work in Plano. I agree DONT live downtown. There is so much crime there!!! There are plenty of great areas outside of Dallas. It really depends on where you work/go to school. Addison, Las Colinas, Plano-all GREAT cities with fantastic apartments, dining, and shopping. PM me if you want....I have lived out here almost all my life!!
|
I will echo the "WHATEVER YOU DO, *DON'T* LIVE DOWNTOWN!!!!" sentiments. Too much crime, and way too scary!
There are a ton of nice places (and nice neighborhoods!) north of Dallas or in the surrounding area. If you're not really sure what kind of neighborhood the apartment of your dreams is, I would recommend calling the Dallas PD and give them the street name or zip code the apartment is in and they can give you the crime stats within a 5-mile radius. (I think some PDs have that info on their website even). |
I think we are all agreed that Downtown Dallas is scary:D I don't even like taking the bus downtown. The West Transit center is a interesting place. :D
I live in Carrollton and I love it. I love where I live. I'm about 2 seconds from George Bush and about 5 minutes from the Tollway. If you want a actual copy of the Apartment Guide, pm me and I can send you one. It comes out monthly and is about the size of a Stephen King novel |
Thank you all for your help I really appreciate it. Especially since I moving so far from my family and friends. Its always scary moving to a new place and your advice and tips will prove helpful I am sure. :)
Are there any good places to visit or to hang out while I am there? Greek love, Dawn |
There are a million things to do! Incredible shopping, fabulous restaurants, a couple of fun lakes, if outdoors is your thing. Do the touristy thing: see the infamous grassy knoll and the Kennedy Museum. Sounds corny, but it really IS interesting.
The Dallas World Aquarium is wonderful Dallas World Aquarium Tons of special events, festivals, art shows, etc. here all summer long. They are in the Friday Guide in the Dallas Morning News or even better, the Dallas Observer (free "alternative paper). |

I live about a mile (as the crow flies) from Southfork Ranch (where exterior scenes of the famous prime time TV soap Dallas were filmed). You'll be surprised that the pool underneath the balcony is nowhere near it in real life (that was a movie set) and that the house isn't as big as TV makes it look to be. Lakes - Ray Hubbard, Lavon, Lewisville are not too far away. Then there's always Fort Worthless (ducks for cover). Seriously, Fort Worth does have some nice attractions. Give one of us a holler when you get down to Big D and we'll be happy to show you around! :) |
i started my new job in downtown dallas this past wednesday. riding the bus and rail was an experience in itself. if you dont get on the right one, it will take you to the state of california (not really, but i got confused and it took me forever to get back).
anyone up for a GC get together sometime by the end of the year? how about at the state fair later in the fall? we can meet during the red river shootout or whenever. i hear the west end is pretty nice too. |
Fort Worth has good theatre with road shows coming through playing at Bass Hall - which is wonderful. I think "The Producers" is coming in the summer. You just missed Main Street Festival , and Mayfest is going on now. Downtown FW rocks!
|
I will be arriving June 3. So if someone has time to show me around that would be great! I will be living in Downtown at my internship site. I'll be flying down so I should probably learn the transit. I am good with the DC metro so who knows...
I LOVE sports, playing, watching etc. I am an exercise science major and my internship is with Baylor. ThetaLady, I got Your PM, GC get together would be fun! I have done a little research on dallas. I read a little about the botanical gardens I think it was. Also whats Hyde park like? if I am spelling that right. Dawn:) |

LOL! I was confused, Its lakewood park and the art gardens. I know I had read about a garden that seemed popular. I looked at the map to find local parks because I was hoping to find a rec center that may have sports clubs for adults.
Sorry about that blonde moment. :D |
I'm in Dallas. It's hot as HAYLE! Who else is in town?
|
I'm in Fort Worth. Glad I won't feel the heat until about 5pm, then straight to the Accord with A/C I go.
Have you ever been to Krystal's in Arlington? Rickey Smiliey (sp?) hosts this karoake night. I went last night and was throughly entertained. |

EVER A saint was born there dammit. But yeah, it is really humid there, thus a big reason why the saints family decided to move :( Viva La Sugarland! |
i work in downtown dallas.

Dont just do Dallas things-Fort Worth has just as much to offer. I live in Plano, and I agree that downtown Dallas is just too dangerous.
Nobody ever goes to Deep Ellum anymore. The last time I went there, it was DEAD! The time I went before that I saw a girl almost beaten to death! |

:p Take that, you unrepentant Houstonite... or is it Sugarlandite! :) ;) :D |

Most North Dallas residents tend to dine out and party in Addison, anyway. :) Other than the West End and Deep Ellum (which I've never been to since I've been living here), the sidewalks downtown roll up at sundown. Except on OU-saxeT weekend! :D (Though it's a lot tamer than the wanton drunken excess and debauchery fest it once was.) |

Have you been there in the last 20 years? Its all Paki now. I'm not making it up. Everything on 59 from 610 to New Terretories is all little New Delhi. Seriosly, you can drive down the freeway and smell the curry. If you are white and racist you live in the woodlands or stinkadina. How are they racist? No one there is white. Damn if you dont blow hot and cold. |
Maybe the North Texas GCers could get together and meet each other?

I am in Denton, but work in Plano. We went out to Deep Ellum last week for a bachelorette party, went to Coyote Ugly. It was sooo dead out there! We had fun, cause it was a bachelorette party, but if we had been out looking for lots of people to party with, it woulda been terrible. I prefer Addison and Ft Worth to party at.
We should get all the North Texas GCers and go to Flying Saucer! Woo hoo!! |
