110 years, and we're still beautiful and strong! I hope you all had a great celebration today or this weekend. 240,000 initiates, and over 170 collegiate chapters, the world's largest women's fraternal organization! |
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

In 1895, four young women at the University of Arkansas realized the need for the potential and inherent value of women. Ina Mae Boles, Jobelle Holcombe, Jean Vincenheller, and Alice Simonds approached Dr. Charles Richardson, a regent of the University and a national officer of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, to assist in organizing a women's group similar to the men's fraternities which were being established on campus. Working together, Dr. Richardson and the four undergraduates developed the structure of a Women's fraternity that would be national in scope. On April 5, 1895 the founders signed the first constitution and ritual. There were fourteen original members, including the Founders. They promised loyalty to goals which have proven timeless in content and application. Throughout its history, Chi Omega has focused on the personal growth of its members - academically, socially, and emotionally. The intrinsic worth of the Fraternity, resulting in the successful growth and development of Chi Omega. Founding of Chi Omega- (in the words of Dr. Charles Richardson, one of our five beloved founders) The immediate occasion of the founding of Chi Omega was a social call made by me one Sunday afternoon upon Jean Vincenheller and Ina Boles. Men's fraternities had recently entered the University, and interest among students was beginning to run high. Our conversation naturally directed to this subject. Although not a student, I was actively interested, having been instrumental in founding the first chapter at the University. Perhaps for this reason the young ladies suspected that I possessed special knowledge, and as they were anxious to have a fraternity of their own, they asked me to prepare a constitution, ritual, and plan of organization. I understood this. From the beginning I had in mind the possibilities of a general organization and developed the plan with that end in view. A great many considerations entered. First, I desired to make Chi Omega radically distinctive and not a copy of similar institutions. That there should be some points of likeness was practically unavoidable, but I believe that Chi Omega possesses as many distinctive features as any like organization and more than most. After the constitution and ritual were drafted, the even more difficult task of selecting distinctive signs, insignia and emblems was confronted. |
Hope all of you had (or will have) a wonderful Elusinia celebration!
This past Sunday the NYC Alumnae chapter hosted Letitia Fulkerson (SNV), Jane Rogers (President of the Foundation), Anne Emmerth (Ex. Director of the fraternity) and Angie Alpert (Dir. Chapter Services) at our Eleusinian Brunch. We had a great turnout and they presented a wonderful program called "Chi Omega Today". It made me even more proud to be a Chi Omega and I'm happy to report that this fraternity is being run by some amazing women! Happy Birthday to us!!! Here's to 110 more years! |

Happy 117th, Chi Omega!
Founders' Day is tomorrow... Anyone have any special plans?
|
I'll be going to the Eleusinia tomorrow night, which will also be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Charlotte, NC Alumnae Club.
Happy Founders Day, sisters! |
Happy Founders Day to all my Chi Omega friends!!! and I have many great memories of the Chi Omega chapter at UCSB which was right next door to the Theta chapter. We had a lot of fun with each other (in a good way!).
(By the way, your chapter at the University of Arizona is AMAZING!!! They really cleaned up at our Order of Omega Greek Life Banquet on Tuesday night. I know one of their advisors is on Greek Chat and I'll ping her to come and post about their successes.) |
Our Eleusinia was great! The special honored guest was SM Kate Scattergood. I haven't been attending a lot of alumnae chapter event, but I will try to start going to more, because I met and talked to lots of sisters who I would like to get to know better. I even met one from my own chapter who graduated a few years before I joined. Where I live now is not near where I went to school and our chapter closed 20 years ago, so she was actually shocked to find someone else from the same chapter at the event. Unfortunately we were too far apart that we knew absolutely nobody in common, but I was glad to see our chapter represented by two members!
|
My local Eleusinian banquet is not until next Thursday, so... let the celebration continue!
