What's your GLO's creed?
Assuming every GLO has some form of public/exoteric creed, I thought it might be enlightening for each of us to share.
I'll start. SAE's creed is The True Gentleman. The True Gentleman The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe. - John Walter Wayland |
Alpha Gamma Delta has the Purpose
http://www.alphagammadelta.org/images/purpose.gif To gain understanding that wisdom may be vouchsafed to me. To develop and prize health and vigor of body. To cultivate acquaintance with many whom I meet. To cherish friendships with but a chosen few and to study the perfecting of those friendships. To welcome the opportunity of contributing to the world's work in the community where I am placed because of the joy of service thereby bestowed and the talent of leadership multiplied. To honor my home, my country, my religious faith. To hold truth inviolable, sincerity essential, and kindness invaluable. To covet beauty in environment, manner, word, and thought. To possess high ideals and to attain somewhat unto them. This shall be my Purpose that those who know me may esteem Alpha Gamma Delta for her attainments, revere her for her Purpose, and love her for her womanhood. |

The Creed of Alpha Delta Pi
I have my copy framed and sitting on my dresser to remind me everyday of what I should strive toward! :) |
Upon her retirement as grand president, Caralee Strock Stanard gave a keynote speech in which she proposed "The Creed of Alpha Delta Pi."
Caralee ended her speech with these instructions: "A creed is a way of life. Alpha Delta Pi's creed is yours and mine, building our footsteps as we go through sunshine and storm, teaching us that if only we have it so, everyone will have her long fair summer day of sun. Our sky is gleaming blue and white. A silvered canopy by day, with stars by night." The Creed of Alpha Delta Pi I BELIEVE in Alpha Delta Pi. <> I BELIEVE that my sorority is more than a ritual or a symbol; that it is a way of life. <> I BELIEVE that the principles established by our founders in 1851 are enduring attributes, exemplifying the highest ideals of Christian Womanhood. <> I BELIEVE that our open motto, "We Live For Each Other", expresses the true spirit of fraternity, and that by living this motto my life will be enriched by true friendships and by unselfish service to mankind. <> I BELIEVE that the privilege of membership in Alpha Delta Pi brings the responsibility of doing the best in whatever I undertake, always remembering that leadership requires confidence tempered with humility, and courage blended with tolerance. <> I BELIEVE that I must strive to become a well-balanced person by following the dictates of our diamond-shaped badge: first, strengthening my own character and personality; second, watching my attitudes towards my fellow-beings; third, recognizing the value of high educational standards; and fourth, developing faith and loyalty. <> I BELIEVE that these four guide-posts, guarded by the stars and the friendly hands in the Adelphean bonds of fellowship, will lead me to achieve a rich and useful life. ~* ~ Caralee Strock Standard ~* ~ |

Phi Kappa Psi Creed
I believe that Phi Kappa Psi is a brotherhood of honorable men, courteous and cultured, who pledge throughout their lives to be generous, compassionate, and loyal comrades;
I believe that I am honor bound to strive manfully for intellectual, moral, and spiritual excellence; to help and forgive my Brothers; to discharge promptly all just debts; to give aid and sympathy to all who are less fortunate; I believe that I am honor bound to strengthen my character and deepen my integrity; to counsel and guide my Brothers who stray from their obligations; to respect and emulate my Brothers who practice moderation in their manners and morals; to be ever mindful that loyalty to my Fraternity should not weaken loyalty to my college, but rather increase devotion to it, to my country, and to my God; I believe that to all I meet, wherever I go, I represent not only Phi Kappa Psi, but indeed the spirit of all fraternities; thus I must ever conduct myself so as to bring respect and honor not to myself alone, but also to my Fraternity; To the fulfillment of these beliefs, of these ideals, in the noble perfection of Phi Kappa Psi, I pledge my life and my sacred honor. Written by John Henry Frizzell, Massachusetts Alpha 1898, and Kent Christopher Owen, Indiana Beta 1958, Adopted by the 1964 Grand Arch Council. |

I believe in fairness, decency, and good manners. I will endeavor to retain the spirit of youth. I will try to make my college, the Sigma Chi Fraternity, and my own chapter more honored by all men and women and more beloved and honestly respected by our own brothers. I say these words in all sincerity: That Sigma Chi has given me favor and distinction; that the bond of our fellowship is reciprocal; that I will endeavor to so build myself and so conduct myself that I will ever be a credit to our Fraternity. - George Ade, Purdue 1887 |
No open creed here.

Being steadfast in every duty small or large. Believing that our given word is binding. Striving to esteem the inner man above culture, wealth or pedigree. Being honorable, courteous, tender, Thus being true to the womanhood of honor. To serve in the light of truth avoiding egotism, narrowness, and scorn. To give freely of our sympathies. Written in 1912:
Alpha Phi Creed I believe in my Fraternity. I believe in the friendships formed in the springtime of my youth. I believe in its high ideals which lift me up beyond myself. I believe in its earnest drive for good scholarship, moral character, and genuine culture. I believe in it as a shrine of international sisterhood wherein I may find love and loyalty, sympathy and understanding inspiration and opportunity. I believe in it as a creator of good citizenship, helping me to do my work well, to live in harmony with others, and to serve my country and to trust in God. I believe in my Fraternity. I believe in Alpha Phi. |
THE STUDENT CREED OF PI KAPPA PHI
I Believe that the ideal chapter is made up of men Who are bound together in a common loyalty which transcends any personal selfishness. Who realize that membership means personal responsibility in bearing their share of the financial burden of the chapter and the national organization. Who bring credit to the fraternity by striving to attain the highest possible standards of scholarship. Who safeguard the reputation of their chapter by keeping careful watch over their personal conduct. Who uphold faithfully the traditions and activities of their college. Who prepare themselves diligently to shoulder their full responsibility as citizens. I Believe that my chapter can become an ideal chapter, and I shall do my share to make it so. |
I suppose this would be the closest thing to a "creed" we have. Really, it's kinda the same thing.
The Symphony of Alpha Xi Delta These things, do we earnestly desire: A clear vision of life, that with gracious and kindly hearts we may share in both joy and sorrow and bring into living reality the sisterhood of women. An appreciation of real merit and worth, steadfastness of soul--that without bitterness or defeat we may encounter misfortune and with humility meet success. These things O Lord, help us to instill within our hearts that we may grow in courage and graciousness and peace. |
There's a short creed, and a long creed.
Here's the short one: To believe in the life of love, To walk in the way of honor, To serve in the light of truth, This is the life, the way, and the light of Sigma Nu. This is the Creed of our Fraternity. |
Lambda Chi Alpha's Creed
We believe in Lambda Chi Alpha and it's traditions, principles, and ideals. The crescent is our symbol, pure, high, ever growing and the cross is our guide denoting service, sacrifice, even suffering and humiliation before the world, bravely endured if need me, in following that ideal.
May we have faith in Lambda Chi Alpha and passion for it's welfare, may we have hope for the future of Lambda Chi Alpha and strength to fight for its teachings. May we have pure hearts that we may approach the ideal of perfect brotherly love. Oh yeah. |
Way to go, Jeff!!!
I was going to post our creed tonight.....but you beat me to it!! You are gonna make one great brother of our bond when you get iniatiated!!! :) :) :) :) |

The Creed of Zeta Tau Alpha:
To realize that within our grasp, in Zeta Tau Alpha, lies the opportunity to learn those things which will ever enrich and ennoble our lives; to be true to ourselves, to those within and without our circle; to think in terms of all mankind and our service in the world; to be steadfast, strong, and clean of heart and mind, remembering that since the thought is father to the deed, only that which we would have manifested in our experience should be entertained in thought; to find satisfaction in being, rather than seeming, thus strengthening in us the higher qualities of the spirit; to prepare for service and learn the nobility of serving, thereby earning the right to be served; to seek understanding that we might gain true wisdom; to look for the good in everyone; to see beauty, with its enriching influence; to be humble in success, and without bitterness in defeat; to have the welfare and harmony of the Fraternity at heart, striving ever to make our lives a symphony of high ideals, devotion to the right, the good, and the true, without a discordant note; remembering always that the foundation precept of Zeta Tau Alpha was love, “the greatest of all things.” -- Shirley Kreasan Strout |
The Creed of Tau Delta sorority is "To Thine Own Self Be True". Which means that we value the individuality and creativity of each and every member and recognize their uniqueness and a pillar of strength.

Alpha Chi Omega has a symphony, which is very fitting since our history is seeped in music and fine arts.
To see beauty even in the common things of life. To shed the light of love & friendship round me; To keep my life in tune with the world that I shall make no discords in the harmony of life; To strike on the lyre of the universe only the notes of happiness, of joy, of peace; To appreciate every little service rendered; To see & appreciate all that is noble in another, be her badge what it may; And to let my lyre send forth the chords of love, unselfishness, sincerity. This is to be my symphony. image of symphony on my chapter's website |

We don't have a creed :(
But we do have a Purpose:) HE PURPOSE OF DELTA DELTA DELTA shall be to establish a perpetual bond of friendship among its members, to develop a stronger and more womanly character, to broaden the moral and intellectual life, and to assist its members in every possible way. IT SHALL ALSO BE THE PURPOSE OF DELTA DELTA DELTA to promote and develop mutually beneficial relationships between the Fraternity and the colleges and universities where the Fraternity has established chapters, to develop qualities of unselfish leadership among its members, and to encourage them to assume, with integrity and devotion to moral and democratic principles, the highest responsibilities of college women. I believe the second part was added later...or at least thats what our Field Consultant who was acting as New Member Educator told us. |
AOII
The Object of Alpha Omicron Pi
The object of the Fraternity shall be to encourage a spirit of Fraternity and love among its members; to stand at all times for character, dignity, scholarship, and college loyalty; to strive for and support the best interest of the colleges and universities in which chapters are installed, and in no way to disregard, injure, or sacrifice those interests for the sake of prestige or advancement of the Fraternity or any of its chapters. Mission Statement Alpha Omicron Pi is an international women's fraternity promoting friendship for a lifetime, inspiring academic excellence and lifelong learning, and developing leadership skills through service to the fraternity and community. One motto, one badge, one singleness of heart. |
The Creed of Alpha Tau Omega:
To bind men together in a brotherhood based upon eternal and immutable principles with a bond as strong as right itself and as lasting as humanity; to know no North no South no East no West but to know man as man; to teach that true men the world over should stand together and contend for supremacy of good over evil; to teach not politics, but morals; to foster not partisianship, but the recognition of true merit wherever found. To have no narrower limits within which to work together for the elevation of man than the outlines of the world. These were the thoughts and hopes uppermost in the minds of the founders of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. -Otis Allan Glazebrook, 1880. |
Alpha Sigma Phi Creed
Brotherhood is the development of lifelong human relationships based on respect, mutual love and support.
Alpha Sigma Phi provides opportunities for its members to experience Brotherhood through the creation and maintenance of Chapters. By experiencing Brotherhood, the members of Alpha Sigma Phi grow stronger intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically and spiritually, thereby becoming more empowered to enrich society and improve the quality of life. The chaotic state of moral and ethical values within our society has prompted many of our members to urge Alpha Sigma Phi to expand and strengthen the Brotherhood experience. In addition, increasing numbers of men desiring membership have expressed their eagerness to experience Brotherhood. In response, Alpha Sigma Phi will actively work to create new chapters and to create an environment of respect, mutual love and support, in each chapter. Further, in support of Our Reasons for Being and our motto "To Better The Man," Alpha Sigma Phi will provide programs and services that assist each member to: Pursue high scholarship. Seek a deeper awareness and understanding of self and others. Recognize the qualities that make self and others unique and needed. Demonstrate responsible leadership. Exemplify integrity, patriotism, and respect for the opinions, beliefs, actions, cultures and principles of others. Serve others. Invite without prejudice men for membership. Possess self-confidence. Exercise autonomy. Demonstrate behavior, which exemplifies the Fraternity's Code of Conduct. Alpha Sigma Phi will have succeeded when its members are successful in developing lifelong, meaningful relationships that enrich society and improve the quality of life. |
The Star and Crescent shall not be worn by every man, but only by him who is worth to wear it. He must be a gentleman ... A man of honor and courage ... A man of zeal, yet humble ... An intelligent man ... A man of truth ... One who tempers action with wisdom, and above all else, one who walks in the light of God.

Chi Omega Symphony
To live constantly above snobbery of word or deed; to place scholarship before social obligations and character before appereances; to be, in the best sense, democratic rather than 'exclusive', and lovable rather than 'popular'; to work earnestly, to speak kindly, to act sincerely, to choose thoughtfully that course which occasion and conscience demand; to be womanly always; to be discouraged never; in a word, to be loyal under any and all circumstances to my Fraternity and her highest teachings and to have her welfare ever at heart that she may be a symphony of high purpose and helpfulness in which there is no discordant note.

(After all these years I have the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose more firmly memorized than the P.E.O. Objects and Aims! Phrases from the first sometimes slip in when I recite the other. I was in Beta Sigma Phi for a couple of years and still remember parts of that creed, too.)
Here's the O&A, and an editorial from a former president expanding on it. http://www.peointernational.org/reco.../pres-desk.php The objects and aims of this Sisterhood shall be general improvement which shall comprehend more especially the following points: To seek growth in charity toward all with whom we associate and a just comprehension of and adherence to the qualities of faith, love, purity, justice, and truth. To seek growth in knowledge and in culture and to obtain all possible wisdom from nature, art, books, study, and society. To radiate all light possible by conversation, by writing, and by the right exercise of any talent we possess. To aim at self-control, equipoise and symmetry of character and temperance in opinions, speech and habits It shall be the chief duty of each member to consider thoughtfully the full import of P.E.O. This will include a sincere regard for our influence in the community, a careful consideration of feeling when speaking, and a determination to do all we can at all times and under all circumstances to express a loving concern for each sister. |
Well we call it a credo but it is the same thing.
We, the members of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity, believe that the development of the individual as a responsible, mature member of society is the primary goal of the university today. We believe that fraternity offers to the university community a unique, desirable and successful means of achieving this goal. In fulfilling the purposes of fraternity, we dedicate ourselves to the principles of: INTELLECTUAL AWARENESS Fraternity creates an atmosphere conducive to the expansion of the individual's intellectual horizons, the interchange of ideas within the academic community and the pursuit of scholastic excellence. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Fraternity requires the individual to commit himself and accept his responsibility to participate. INTEGRITY Fraternity generates a standard of personal integrity--a framework for the individual to maintain honesty, exhibit loyalty and retain a sense of self-discipline. BROTHERLY LOVE Fraternity inspires and express the interrelation of the individual with his fellow, his pride in the institution and respect for the wisdom of its tradition. |
