All sorts of programs, specifically in line with the Five Point Thrust.

This is Greek Life, but if certain people make certain comments this thread will become a nuclear weapon and threaten GC civilization as they know it.

The taliban at it's finest...Like if I said Amy needs to get some sugar cane and lighten up?

We had a program called Delta Night at the Apollo. That was great!

Do you have a chapter?

My chapter recently held an AKAnomics seminar where information was presented on buying homes, life insurance, wills, savings, etc.

Is that one of AKA's national programs, or was it something your specific chapter created?

That sounds like a great program. In light of the Terri Schiavo case, wills (including living wills & power of attorney documents) are something that no one is too young to have.

Economics is. The program was just held with that in mind.

And I agree that people need to learn about those issues earlier in life, given how it's not guaranteed to you. Especially if they have families that may survive them.

Around '97, my chapter had a similar program for Economic Development. We explicitly did a good credit seminar and talked about the potential "evils" of credit card use.

We have a similar program still in development for Seniors. It teaches about interviewing, budgets, hooks them up with mentor alums, etc.

Tough to put on though if your chapter has only had its charter since '02.

Oh that's a great idea. Would be good to also provide our alum and undergrad chapters with info on Living Wills given all the publicity surrounding the Terry Schiavo case right now.

How so?

My chapter has had its charter since '92 and we have successfully put on such large scale programs with no more than 10 Sorors on the yard at one given time and as little as 2 Sorors.

The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, emphasizing math and sciences for girls 11-14.

Seniors Program addressing health, wills, and other issues for Seniors (not college seniors).

Annual Literary Luncheon featuring a Black author.

Annual International Day of Service promoting AID awareness and prevention.

Still wondering why Ten's and Imp's posts were deleted.

Annual Crimson and Cream Days at the State Capitol meeting with state legislators about issues facing the Black community. Held in conjunction with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Catholic Charities Furniture Warehouse, again in conjunction with Kappa Alpha Psi to collect and organize used but well maintained furniture to be distributed for free to folx in need.

Still wondereing why threads keep getting closed.

St. Joseph's Children's Home mentoring and tutoring children in the Child Abuse/Neglect system.

Annual scholarship program for high school seniors.

Mostly because until recently, our senior classes have been pretty small -- 1 or 2 at a time graduating. We had a drop off in recruitment immediately following our chartering, and even then, we only had 31 members total.

It's tough to get those programs off the ground, because it's generally assumed that there will be alums that are say.. older than 25, and more further along in their careers.

I can think of maybe 1 or two of our chapter's alums in the area that could offer much in the way of career mentoring.

I guess we could make an effort to hook up with the 2000+ alums in our city so that we could make this work, but, unfortunately, our other chapters in the area haven't done much more with their alums than ask for money (one just completed a 2.5M rennovation of their house, the other is in the middle of a 1.5M rennovation).. I figure in 5-10 years, we'll have our own chapter alums out there, we'll have networking down better, and, hopefully, we'll get someone with the initiative to get it done.

kt,
It sounds like the biggest difference is that our programs are more community based as opposed to sorority based. They are given for other students and people in the community, as opposed to just for the members.

Unless I am imsinterpreting your post.

AKA_Monet 03-23-2005 08:32 PM

That's often the case. There is an option to make our programs community based. But, as a former active, with Greek Week, philanthropies, and a full social calendar, we're lucky to get done what we can.

HWGLO's are not, in my opinion organizations created for the betterment of a community. They are for the betterment of the individuals. For example, we do philanthropies to help our members to understand the value of giving back to the community, not necessarily for the value of the act itself.
