North v. South Diatribe

because we always love to have North vs. South debates, what do you think of what's said on this website:
http://fuckthesouth.com/

adduncan 03-20-2005 05:03 PM

I think it's a temper tantrum posted by an ignorant, frustrated, and very small person.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 03-20-2005 05:14 PM

That's a lot of the f bomb.

I wish I had more cause to use the term "the f bomb".

cashmoney 03-20-2005 05:22 PM

he's got some points....but if it wasnt for the south and mid-west, all those fuckers up north would then bitch about food being too pricey because they'd be importing all of it from us had we kept the two countries apart....not to mention all those transplants from up north wouldnt be living here in Florida because we'd tax the fuck out of them. But what the hell, he's just pissed because living up north he doesnt get to see the sun that much this time of year. :D

ADPi Conniebama 03-20-2005 06:34 PM

My father is a "damn yankee." And for all of you yankees who don't know what that means.

Yankee - A northerner who visits the south.
Damn yankee - A northerner who visits the south and stays.

I do not think that all "yankees" think the same way that this "gentleman" thinks (well I hope they don't), but, I do think that liberals think that way - f-bombs and all. My father is a republican and a local politician and he would definately disagree with this writter.

As a true "bible beating, Jesus Freak, Card Carrying Republican with a gun permit and a gun in my glove compartment," I believe there is no better place to live in the world then the South.

I think that liberals are so very mad at George Bush and his conservative politics and are more mad the there are more of us then there are of them. (please find a pic of the red and blue counties [from the 04 election]http://www.kieranhealy.org/blog/archives/000943.html it is much more impressive then the red and blue states - there are alot of red northern counties)

This "gentleman" said so much with out saying anything of importance and it showed me more of his ignorance then his intellegance.

Yes, I have seen the statistics of welfare recipients and the red and blue states however please look at the statistics of welfare voter registration. I mean I am not on welfare and do not receive any "yankee" assistance - and I VOTE.

Last but not least . . . Liberals are the ones who keep raising welfare and are wanting to keep people on the government payroll so they should be happy that their money is going to some non working red-stater and not into their own pockets. If it were up to me we would drop the "have more children get more government money" thing that liberals love so much and I could keep more of MY MONEY.

Sorry for the rant but I am a proud southern woman with a great private school education and a university degree and I love all of my yankee sisters - liberal or conservative - and I just wanted to give a small rebuttle to that very disgruntled liberal.

(forgive the spelling errors)

Because it's amusing and interestingly put.
Why are you posting to the thread if you don't like it?

Leave me alone, Tom, and stop visiting any thread I make to complain about it in some way.

I, kddani, am now officially joining the ignore-a-moderator campaign

I think the only point made by this, er, person that could be called valid by any stretch of the imagination is the one about hypocrisy and homosexuals, but s/he really could've stated the case a little better. When you bring yourself down to the supposed level of the people you're ranting against, you lose credibility...fast. As for the rest of it...hmmm, well.

kafromTN 03-20-2005 07:21 PM

This guy must be jealous b/c the South is truly God's country, especially with all the beautiful, dignified southern ladies we have down here, the wonderful clean air, the openess, the hills, mountains, trees, animals....it brings a tear to my eye thinking about how much better it is down in the South than up in the North.

And by the way it is not damn yankees, it is damnyankees (it's one word) ;)

I was born and raised in the South, and ran like hell 2 months after my 18th birthday.

They didn't call it the "Great Migration" for nothing. :)

I think the rant is hilarious. I've heard it the other way around for most of my life, and I don't take either half seriously.

Have any of the people who talk about how the South is the best place ever actually lived anywhere else?

ADPi Conniebama 03-20-2005 09:01 PM

Wait, you are correct, I was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama . . . I went to college in Florence, Alabama . . . after graduation I moved to Birmingham, Alabama . . . then 5 years later I moved back to Huntsville, Alabama.

I have visited. . . New York City - the people were extremely nice to me and didn't take advantage of me and laughed with me about my accent (which they said they loved) and I had a great time.

I have visited . . . Indianapolis . . . beautiful city - people were very nice and pleasant and helpful

I have visited . . . San Fransisco (?sp) people were very nice that I dealt with and the city was beautiful . . . at the same time I visited all of the area around there except Oakland and I had a great time.

Lemme see Texas-Oaklahoma-Boston-New Jersey I have visited lots of American States and so far I have enjoyed my self and they were nice places in their own rights BUT I WOULDNT WANT TO LIVE THERE.

That is how God made us all different with different interests, wants and desires. I understand why a person would want to move away to get a specific career path started, however, I have found no personal reason to move out of the south.

Anywhere above the Mason/Dixon line is not for me. Actually I consider some of Tennessee to "northern" for me. But, ALL of America is beautiful from the desserts to the mountains from the flatlands to the swamps . . . . (wow I may brake into song)

I guess my point is I do not think that a "yankee" is an ignorant - mean - s.o.b - just because he/she is from a blue state that is rediculous. "people are people" whether yankee or redneck.

ADPi Conniebama 03-20-2005 09:59 PM

I was just kidding. But, I once went to Oktibbeha County, Mississippi (Just south of Jackson) and they (my mothers family) considered me a yankee and they didn't know what I was doing there.

I was there for a funeral for my mothers cousin and wow that IS the south. They just considered me "another big city yankee" which was kind of funny 'cause I am just from north Alabama.

ALSO, Sorority girls lets not forget where female secret societies ie, . . .sororities or female fraternities . . started . . . Macon, GA. I know that is kind of off of the subject but I just wanted to pour salt in the wound. And, I am sure the writer of that awful website couldnt care less about sororities - in the south or north or west or east.

I was just reading this old thread (from 2000) about the different races and ethnicities and I thought again about being angry at anyone because of where they live (don't get me wrong the guy who wrote that site is an idiot - in the true sense of the word) however I am going to try not to write any thing else negative or try to answer anything negative on North vs South or the different races.

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND HAPPY DAY!!

honeychile 03-20-2005 11:23 PM

You almost feel sorry for someone whose vocabulary is so limited and anger is so palatable that he or she resorts to such vitriol. Maybe somebody didn't get into William & Mary or Vanderbilt? Or maybe was jilted by someone who knew how to form a sentence with the f bomb?

Either way, this person is more to be pitied than anything else. And if you don't believe me, check the "facts" as given - they're all several years old.

FWIW, until recently, I considered myself as a product of both the North and the South, having spent an equal amount of time in both.

ADPi Conniebama 03-20-2005 11:52 PM

I know, honey, I was angry at him at first (I don't know why I am assuming it is a him but I am going to go with that ) but my mother always told me that anyone that has to resort to swearing must not have a good vocabulary and to attempt to discuss anything in a rational manner is a waste of valuable time and grey matter.

So, I wisely decided not to respond to him. I mean I doubt he is reading Greekchat but if he is then maybe he will learn how to express himself without being vulgar, so as to allow people who may or may not disagree with him to respond with the same respect that he gives his readers.

(and just so I am clear again his "links" are very lopsided and not fact like he thinks)

I'll take that over a kamoto any day.

I was going to post something incredibly mean after reading this (not mean to you Rob ;) ) but I will bite my tounge. I never have and never ever will live in the south b/c people with southern accents are just something I can't get over and I hate hot weather...yuck. I can't wait to move further north...I'm thinking Greenland maybe. :D

HotDamnImAPhiMu 03-21-2005 12:16 PM

Funny. That's how I feel about northern accents.

Private I 03-21-2005 12:45 PM

I've got mixed feelings about the South, having half-grown up in Tallahassee, but the one thing I DO enjoy is the weather. My sister in Boston has like the world's largest collection of winter coats and that's just not for me.
Although when the temperature hits 117 what with humidity and all, it kinda makes you change your mind.

My solution? Spend Sep-Apr in the south, and then head to the Adriatic for the rest of the summer to cool down=)

I agree.

But if you haven't been to heaven on earth yet, try Makena on Maui, Kalihiwai on Kauai, or Haleiwa/the North Shore on Oahu.

Susan_Renee 03-22-2005 08:51 PM

personally, i love living in the south. i definitely wouldnt mind going north for a while, but i'm positive i'd end up back down here. maybe not here in arkansas, but definitely somewhere in the south.

Would you all consider WV northern or southern?

(Kinda off topic)

ladygreek 03-22-2005 09:46 PM

Born and raised on the Mason/Dixon line. So some folx think I am from the south, others say I am from the north.

But having lived in Minnesota 30+ years, there is no question now that I am a northerner. :)

West Virginia is kind of in that backwater, redneck, trashy part of the east coast. Its where all the people with no money go snowkiing during the winter months because they cant afford Colorado, Montana or Utah. People there live in actual tracktor trailers instead of "mobile homes". Ive even seen people there living in school buses. Almost every 10th person I'd talk to that was from there was missing teeth. Most of the people there are fat and listen to 90's Billy Ray Cirrus type of country music mixed in with a little Lynardskinner, Def Leopard, Motley Crue and Nelly. They think only gay people listen to Electronic Dance Music (house, trance, break-beats, drum-n-bass or progressive) and they have only one university that only half the people out there can name.....WVU. Not to mention the school is only known for its cokewhores, binge-drinking and shitty football team.

So, I'd say its northern. :D

I have to say that West Virginia is part of the North, because it's the one state which CHOSE to be part of the North.

Which is not to say that it doesn't have some beautiful areas, especially if you're into rock climbing & such. Of course, since my brother was in one of the "Wild & Wonderful West Virginia" commercials as a climber, and is written up for naming & pioneering many of the climbs, I'm somewhat forced to say that!

This is actually true. I just want to know how they got out to the island in the middle of the Kanawha River.

That's only about half the state. The other half listens to NPR or Britney Spears
They think only gay people listen to Electronic Dance Music (house, trance, break-beats, drum-n-bass or progressive)
Actually, many people here like techno.
and they have only one university that only half the people out there can name.....WVU. Not to mention the school is only known for its cokewhores, binge-drinking and shitty football team.
I have mixed feelings on WVU. I do love the Mountaineers, however, my school is a satellite campus, and they don't like to give us the money the school needs for basic stuff, like building repairs, or decent equipment.

So, I'd say its northern.
My friend in Columbus, OH, just told me WV was southern. She also told me I had a "cute Southern accent."

All in all, thanks for the Great State bash.

The state is both. The northern part of WV is northern. The southern/western part of WV is southern.

One of my elementary school teachers said something to the same effect when we were about 10 and the boys in the class started swearing during breaks a lot. I think it was meant more along the lines of knowing what's appropriate for what situation and having a large enough vocabulary to convey the same meaning without the potentially offensive words.

Wow, that was nasty for no good reason.

I agree with what bekibug says -- part of being mature is knowing when swearing is appropriate and when it isn't, and having the vocab to fall back on when it's not.

First of all, KSig was quoting ADPi Conniebama, not me. I just happened to agree with her (and her mother) - and bekibug, and HotDamnI'mAPhiMu, and many others.

Being mature does not always equal having a good vocabulary. One who depends on excessive profanity negates any real chance of having others think that they are either mature OR have a decent vocabulary.

First of all . . . you did, in fact, make a fallacious connection when responding to my post. You said:

Quote:

The original post was extremely condescending, and implied that swearing was a substitute for poor vocabulary skills. This is patently incorrect - swearing is, in no way, a substitute for poor vocabulary. While there may be social decorum issues attached, and I'd like to thank all of you guys for beating that horse to death, there's absolutely no connection between swearing and intelligence/vocabulary. That's insane.

I would like to posit for you that it is excessively sensitive to deny someone's point simply because of swearing - especially considering the fact that we are not in 'polite company' or another such socially constricting situation. You are all adults - if you cannot see past a bit of colorful language and dissect the larger point therein, you are less taking the moral highroad and more copping out from rational, adult conversation.

Maturity must be manifested in the ability to deal with people and situations outside of your sphere of comfort without turning the nose up or putting another down. We are not children - you can examine a euphemism for sex or fecal matter without becoming rosy in the cheeks, and if you cannot, then you have little to no basis for cutting on another's maturity. In fact, especially in the case of honeychile, this sort of implication is par for the self-righteous course - how about you address the issues presented, rather than the presentation style? Wouldn't that be mature?

Bottom line: if you decide not to take someone seriously because of swearing, YOU are proving yourself just as limited as the one doing the swearing.

-RC
--fucking a guys, stop being ridiculous

HotDamnImAPhiMu 03-23-2005 12:13 PM

I think the point is less that dropping one f bomb is distracting, and more that if you're peppering your speech so throughly with swear words that they're taking the place of every noun, adjective, and verb, it becomes (a) hard to understand what you're saying and (b) hard to take you seriously.

I don't think anyone's that worked up about one or two words.

Except my mom. Who told me yesterday ladies don't say "shut up".

kddani 03-23-2005 12:14 PM

gotta give a bravo to KSig RC's post.

I'd rather see someone curse than see dozens of people look down their noses at someone b/c of the words they use. It's not like we're talking about cussing up a storm at a fancy dinner party with royalty here.

Ivory tower is crowded today ;)

bekibug 03-23-2005 12:32 PM

Indeed, it is crowded, so I came out onto the nice breezy balcony for some fresh air :)
