Positive Greek Films

Is anyone aware of any films that depict Greek life in a positive way? I can think of several that show the ugly side, but none that highlight the positives. Thanks for your help!

Animal House: the greatest pro-Fraternity film of all time. Revenge of the Nerds: Kevin Costner. Ozzie & Harriett: no kidding; the 1950's TV series occasionally centered around the fraternity antics of Rick Nelson and his Kappa Sigma fraternity brothers at USC. Three in the Attic: 1960s movie that took place in the atmosphere of UNC's fraternity system.

What exactly would you consider positive? Just something that does not involve drinking?

Road Trip has that part where they stop by the fraternity house.

I loved Legally Blonde.

Pumpkin didn't involve drinking but showed stereotypical sorority cattiness.

I can only think of Legally Blonde

Anyone know if Amanda Brown (writer of the novel) is Greek? If so, is she a DG?

honeychile 03-20-2005 01:37 AM

Shannen Doherty did a Lifetime movie, "Friends 'til The End" which was somewhat psycho, but the sorority is shown in a positive light. I don't remember if they ever name the sorority.

I don't know about her, but one of the screenwriters (Karen McCullah Lutz) went to JMU and was Greek. Don't know which sorority, though. She just wrote a novel called The Bachelorette Party which is supposed to be decent.

So embarrassed to admit that I know this, but it was a fake sorority called Delta Lambda.....but the movie was filmed at USC and they showed the outside of the Alpha Chi house!

I guess positive would be one that shows the community service and academic side and the relationships, I guess what could be considered a different look at Greek life besides the drinking and partying. I am trying to put together a vignette that will show interests a look at GReek life. I have all the 'negative' titles named, but I've never heard of Amanda. I will definitely check that one out.

None.

IowaStatePhiPsi 03-21-2005 04:07 AM

i honestly tried to think of one.
The closest I could come up with was the fraternity in PCU.

This is ridiculous, I am racking my brain and I can't think of any.

It's so funny that as Greeks we want campus officials to see us as positive, as leaders, as civically engaged and after more than 200 years of GLO existence, we can't come up with even one. That is scary.

You are absolutely right. Unfortunately, that doesnt sell movie tickets. However, I did think that THE END of Sorority Boys did show things in a positive light. Although I cant say much for the rest of the movie.

What is PCU? I've never heard of that.

PCU

PCU is a great movie!!

It has Jeremy Pivens, John Favreau and David Spade in it. I reccommend renting it when you get a chance. Any movie with Geroge Clinton and P Funk in it cannot be bad either.

I would really to see a film that gives a true look into Greek culture. Yes, we aren't perfect, but we do so much compared to many other groups, that I think mainstream american culture should be made aware. Films like Aninmal house and alike are funny and for comedy, however have slapped a name on Greek culture that we are trying to shake. Is that bad? No, not necessarily, however we should make it known that we are more than social "perfectionists".

I totally agree! Like I said earlier, it is disturbing to think that after hundreds of years of rituals, community service, acedemics, etc., the thing that people think or remember about Greeks is excess and drunkeness.

And ok, I agree, that stuff is not the "sexy" stuff, but especially in sororities, women are loking for more substance and I wonder how we are meeting that need. I think without joining or becoming a "groupie", it makes it hard for any person to know what we do besides drink and party.

Greek Zone has a long lists of some I had never heard of - http://www.greekzone.com/pgs/info/movies.html - most of the plot summaries are not exactly positive...

Optimist Prime 03-27-2005 03:57 AM

GOING GREEK

seriously you need to watch it

for real real, not for play play

AlphaPhiBubbles 03-28-2005 12:23 AM

While perusing the video store I spotted a movie called "Delta Delta DIE!" and got a giggle out of it...especially the cheese factor in the description. I believe the movies plot had to do with either killer sorority girls or some kind of event that kills an entire sorority. i want to say its the former, cuz thats awesome.

Sorry if that was irrelevant to the topic. I think that "positive greek film" is kind of a tricky subject, cuz I think legally blonde is pretty positive but it could be seen as negative because of how stereotypical the girls act. Same might apply to other movies.
