I have a question for some of you, who would you consider American Royalty and what do you base your choice on?
Me, I consider Bill Gates and his family to be American Royalty. I base it on the fact that the Gates's are the most wealthy family in America and possibly the world. If I based it on political power as well as money, I'd say the Bush family is our "monarchy". They've had two family members become presidents which was never done before and its a good chance JEB will be the 3rd family member to become president eventually. -And no, the Kennedy family is not American Royalty. |

Prince William makes me melt like butter on one of my grandma's homemade tortillas!!! hahaha |
Technically he holds no royal title, but Queen Elizabeth II is his grandma:

Does anyone else find it kind of interesting that so many countries still have "royalty"??
I think I'd be a little upset if my tax dollars and my money was going to support their lifestyle. But then again, I guess we do spend $10 to see bad movies to support our "celebrities". |

But if I was forced to choose, I would have to say American Royalty would be whoever the Hawaiian Royal family was....King Kamehameha, etc. I'm sure that there are some hot royal descendants around....(paging OTW for her knowledge / input....) |

I don't think America has any "royalty," at least not these days. Although if we did, I think the Kennedys and the Bushes would both have to be included. |
I remember as a kid we'd go on field trips to Iolani Palace -- former home of King David Kalakaua and Queen Lydia Lil`uokalani until the overthrow. I remember being in awe at the grandeur of the place. It was so big and beautiful.
I still get the same feeling after all these years. |

I mentioned that to my own mother, who replied, "They don't like the Queen, so they're coming here to see the King?" And sugarandspice is right - as anti-monarchist as my friends are, they surely love the tourist money that the Royals generate! |

Felipe de Borbón y Grecia, Crown Prince of Spain This man a beautiful...yummy...... Of course Prince William...i'm just so glad that Harry got cute, I was worried there for a while |
I knew a prince. He married a friend of the family. It wasn't that big of a deal. There are all sorts of people, including royals, living in NYC.
I agree that the Monaco royals are really great looking. EWWWW I just googled images of Prince Albert. I had no idea that I would see such dirty pictures. EWWWWW! |

Is the palace still there? |

Well for starters there's not a whole lot of them left. And even fewer go on to public office these days. And even fewer stay out of a scandal. Ted Kennedy is an ancient relic from a world few people today can relate to. They relatively have no political influence anymore outside of Mass. Most people look at them like they're a joke.....like Ted Kennedy never really working a day in his life. It was different with Joe Kennedy and Joe Jr. and JFK and RFK. Those guys worked hard at what they did. But since them the family has declined. You could argue that John Kerry is a Kennedy and that he had influence. Well, thats true, but he didnt win the election and he will be forgotten in less than 10 years. And besides, look who was running against Kerry for the democratic nomination...Howard Dean??? C'mon. That guy is a bigger joke than Kerry. Fact is, the Kennedy family got its power quick and easy......and they lost it quick and easy. Its as simple as that. |
HIS ROYAL HOTNESS! DAYUMN!
What she said! All 3 she mentioned are hella fine!
Who needs coffee when there is a HOT thread like this? :D Drool! http://www.my-smileys.de/smileys2/drooling3_2.gif Quote:

Damned shame that much of the furnishings of the palace were sold off to the highest bidder at the turn of the 20th century; I'm glad to see that much of it is finally coming back to their rightful home. |
With regard to the British monarchy it is actually a very good deal for the British people. When the Monarch dies his/her estate passes to the next Monarch, but, the new monarch assigns the crown estate to the British government to be administered. The civil list is what pays the Royals for performing their duties. The civil list is funded by the earnings of the crown estate. The earnings of the crown estate are very much larger than the funds paid into the civil list and what is left over goes to the government to the general fund. The monarch also inherits the previous monarch's PERSONAL estate and has for some years now paid regular income tax on that as well. So, the Royal holdings are used by the government to defray the expenses of the monarchy, the residue (worth millions of Pounds Sterling) go to the people through the general fund, and the personal income tax on personal holdings goes to the government's inland revenue dept. just like anyone else. The tourist value of the Royals is worth quite a lot and they actually cost nothing and contribute millions to the public purse. The anti-monarchists like to gloss over this rather interesting point.

Yep, it's still there, 123 years after it was first erected. The only official state royal residence went neglected for many years after the overthrow, but supporters began a major restoraton in the 1970s -- around the beginnings of the "Hawaiian Renaissance". And, like Chuck said, it was around this time that the exterior was used as the HQ for Hawaii 5-0. http://www.iolanipalace.org |
