Power Girls

http://www.mtv.com/onair/power_girls...ex_pr_main.jpg

Premieres March 10 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV

The life of a PoweR Girl at Lizzie Grubman's New York City PR firm is sometimes glamorous, sometimes stressful but always exciting. Watch as Rachel, Kelly, Millie and Ali plan nightclub openings and album launches, hobnob with celebrities, wrangle the paparazzi, pitch Page Six and shop, all while fighting for a permanent spot on Lizzie's team. Don't miss the drama take over their lives as these four young ladies try to take over the celebrity party circuit all under the watchful eye of Lizzie on PoweR Girls.

Canadian AOII 03-09-2005 05:14 PM

I am REALLY interested in seeing that show (too bad I probably won't get it on MTV Canada) b/c I want to go into PR. Knowing MTV it'll come off as something negative. Hopefully they'll surprise me! Too bad for me though this'll likely make the field more competitive to get into.

Lizzie Grubman is fug

Peaches-n-Cream 03-10-2005 12:43 AM

I wonder if she'll talk about her car 'accident' in the Hamptons.

FAB*SpiceySpice 03-10-2005 04:16 AM

I think I am going to go to the Hamptons and "accidentally" throw my SUV into reverse, injure a bunch of people, and spend some time in jail so that I too can have my own reality show on MTV!!! :D

In all seriousness though, I know I will watch this even though I hate Lizzie Uglyface Grubman

abaici 03-10-2005 05:02 AM

I don't get the appeal of Lizzie Grubman. I guess she's rich and blonde. But, she looks like her dad with blonde hair.

TheEpitome1920 03-10-2005 05:51 PM

I'll be tuning in tonight. PR seems kinda interesting to me.

Steeltrap 03-10-2005 06:49 PM

^^
I'm going to tune in. As a reporter, I do work w/PR folks.
Here's an article from 1998 in New York magazine that first detailed Lizzie Grubman and so-called "power publicists:"

I can agree with your statement. I graduated in Decemeber and I am still out looking for a job in PR.

KarenC725 03-10-2005 09:41 PM

Guess I've worked for the wrong PR companies! I've done PR for automotive mostly but never got to wear any of the clothes I've seen on the commercials. Well, I did go to the charity preview for the North American International Auto Show but that wasn't quite the same thing. I have a feeling they'll focus a lot more on the glam of it than anything else. Most of PR isn't glam unless you do get to work with P.Diddy....

Private I 03-10-2005 11:27 PM

My sister is majoring in Communications with a focus on PR but I still don't get what it is she's supposed to do...I always have a vision of Samantha from Sex and the City. Maybe I should tune into this show...

Rudey 03-11-2005 12:26 AM

She's a violent criminal and I shit out prettier things than her face.

I LOVED this show!!! I've always wanted to work in the entertainment industry and I think that this shows gives a glamorized look at the industry. The only thing I can't stand is Lizzie's eyebrows. But I will definitely keep watching.

GeoffZ 03-11-2005 04:15 AM

One episode and I'm addicted. This show almost makes me want to move to New York and do PR. Almost. I think I'd just like to work the door and hold the list.

It's funny, I remember seeing that Lindsay Lohan item in Page Six a few months ago. Now I know it was Lizzie. I loved that, "Who does she think she is?" lol

Lizzie could use some shaping, threading, plucking and her voice seems oddly masculine to me, but I enjoyed the show.

GeoffZ 03-18-2005 04:02 AM

Kelly was a hot mess in tonight's episode.....the bad extensions, ignoring her fiancee, stalking Paris (whose extensions were just as bad). She was all over the place. I can't see her lasting too long in PR.

I hate Lizzie's voice overs. You can tell she's reading right from a cue card.

Dionysus 03-18-2005 10:43 AM

Yeah you guys are right, this show is hyped, don't believe in it! Majority of PR/Marketing/Advertising are regular desk/office jobs. Not that there's anything wrong with desk jobs, but if you're looking for glamour, move to LA or NYC and try to get jobs at the top firms...which will be unlikely. If you're looking for a job where there will be interaction with tons of people, you may or may not get a chance to in these fields. I wish I found that out before my last semester in undergrad when I did that internship. :(

WCUgirl 03-18-2005 10:57 AM

I've never heard of this chick. I did a Google search, and all I got was pages upon pages of stuff about this show.

What's she famous for?

For backing her SUV into a line of people waiting outside a nightclub in the Hamptons and then calling them white trash before taking off.

Her father is a big entertainment lawyer in NYC as well.

Ahh. Thanks. I must have missed that one. :)

Steeltrap 03-18-2005 02:25 PM

Lizzie continues to be tough to look at -- leather skin, bad roots, smoker's voice, etc. But this show is strangely enjoyable. I'm sort of surprised that Lizzie didn't bust a cap into Kelly after complaining about her all during the show.

Walter's not that bad-looking.

PM_Mama00 03-18-2005 06:34 PM

So I'm graduating with PR in a month. Wow. I wish there were jobs like that here in Suburban Detroit. Wait... I wish all PR was like that. It's not AT ALL!

Press releases, media releases, flyers, pictures, websites, press conferences...

SO GLAMOUROUS.

MaMaBuddha 03-18-2005 06:41 PM

i guess that little bit of time she did in prison must have done a toll on her.

*someone tell the interns to make sure they don't walk behind the SUV*

Conscience Point was a hot spot in 2000 and 2001. I'm not sure about now. She 'accidentally' drove her SUV into a bunch of people after she called them white trash.

Lizard Skin? CTFU...I would think that she would have some dermatologist clients or something that would give her a chemical peel, etc.

Very true. Most PR firms work with local companies and plan events, dinners, create websites and do press releases. The larger PR firms in an area will do the same thing but for bigger companies. Not all that glamorous although you get to know a lot of people within the area. It's only a few PR firms (out of millions) that do the large-scale publicity events where they get to hobnob with celebrities. These jobs are mostly found in NYC, LA and maybe Miami. A PR internship and a college degree (even at a prestigious university) won't get you one of those types of PR jobs. The people who are hired for these positions usually know someone within the company or have a relative who is somewhat of a celebrity.

A lot of college girls will probably want to go into PR thinking that it's as glamorous as the show portrays it to be. Little do they know that they will most likely end up working for a small PR firm or they'll be working in the marketing/communications department of a company.

ETA:
Oh, FYI, the pay sucks at the smaller, local PR firms. A few of my friends and sorority sisters decided to work for these PR firms rather than work in a corporation's marketing department. The PR companies are smaller so you have more responsibilities when you start and you'll move up the ladder quicker. Downside: You'll probably get paid significantly less than a first year teacher. Needless to say, I took a marketing/PR position in a corporation's communication department. I like having enough money to eat. :)

I'm so totally addicted. It makes me wish I was still a PR major and not Pyschology now.
