Do Any of You Own a Gun?

I'm thinking about taking classes to learn how to fire a gun. After that, I would be eligible to get a permit to carry a concealed fire arm.

Do any of you own a gun? Have you taken any classes to learn how to properly fire one? If you own a gun, ladies, what type do you have?

...it ain't THAT bad in the Alpha forum is it? :)

No, I don't own a gun but I fired one on a shooting range once. Hit my approximate target 7 out of 10 times.

....a word to the wise is sufficient.

Stop. Being. Messy.

TheEpitome1920 03-02-2005 01:49 PM

I dont own one and I doubt I ever will because they make me nervous. However, both my parents own them, I'm not sure which kind.

mightymouse94 03-02-2005 01:54 PM

Being in the military, I have been trained on several types of guns. I presently do not own one, due to me having a child, for protection I choose a Boxer breed of dog.

honeychile 03-02-2005 02:16 PM

I have two handguns. I was trained first for a job that I had, but took the NRA Personal Protection Course as a refresher. I can't say enough good things about the NRA course, EVEN if you never get a firearm! They teach you some really good ways of protecting yourself without the use of a gun, and how & when to use it. You get to practice on several different types of handguns (automatic, revolver, etc) with trained instructors.

The way our course went, we had six hours of basic instruction, lunch, then six hours of weapon instruction, all on a Saturday. The next Saturday, we had from two to six hours of Rifle Range usage. IF you're going to get a gun, I highly recommend going to the range, because you learn range etiquette & such. I shoot a 96% moving, 98% stationary target.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me!

SKEEphistAKAte 03-02-2005 02:46 PM

Nope, don't have one but is at the top of my wish list.

Steeltrap 03-02-2005 03:16 PM

I have thought about getting one from time to time, particularly if I end up alone and not in a relationship.

Thanks. What kind do you have? I don't know anything about guns; only that they can kill. Since I'm always on the road and such, a sista needs protection. (insert my favorite smilie with the pistol here) LOL

I hope my classes wouldn't be held on Saturdays. I'd never get started or completed. :o

SKEEphistAKAte 03-02-2005 03:58 PM

Thanks for the info. honeychile.

Are there any places that make custom guns? I have an idea in my head of what I want my gun to look like.

AKA2D '91 03-02-2005 04:00 PM

HC one of my LSs (back in the 90s) had the cutest gun. The handle was pink, trimmed in chrome. :o

SKEEphistAKAte 03-02-2005 04:00 PM

^^ sounds like what I want!! Can you ask her where she got it from?

AKA2D '91 03-02-2005 04:05 PM

Ummmmmmmmm, that was 13 years ago. :o I'll inquire. If she has it or remembers having it :o, I'll let you know. :D

Naw. Do I look like a hood-rat chick?

SkeeWee14 03-02-2005 08:45 PM

My temper is far too quick to own one. I came close to getting one in college, but then I made a list of people who could possibly catch a bullet if I flew into a fit of rage. HC there were more than seven people on that list? I figured getting a degree from Jail House University wasn't worth owning a gun.

See, that's what I'm thinking. I do have a quick temper at times, so I worry about having one.

Maybe. Maybe not.

Sorors SW14 and ST: I think when I was younger, I would have had this concern. Since I'm more seasoned, I think I've mellowed. :D

All of my friends say that about me. (I can't for the life of me figure out why  ) But I really don't think that I would shoot someone out of anger. I like to think that I have more self control than that.

1savvydiva 03-02-2005 10:34 PM

I want to get one. My first serious boyfriend was a police officer and he bought me a gun, but wouldn't give it to me until I was properly trained and licensed. I went to a few classes, but didn't stick with it, so no gun, lol.

I live alone so I think about it sometimes. I have pepper spray and a whole bunch of knives though. :p

Queencece 03-02-2005 10:50 PM

Okay....

I am currently looking for classes and have found some through NRA. I want to own one too, but to go to the range to practice.

I work at the Police Dept and they gave me some tips on what to do and how to get a permit.

I can't wait to get to the gun range! I'm a little excited!

I found some classes that are for $60 and are near Landmark Mall. I think I will see what's poppin for the summer time.

Q

Conskeeted7 03-02-2005 10:55 PM

I will have my permit by the end of the summer. I am taking the classes that are required for a conceaed weapon permit. Although I probably won't carry a concealed weapon, I want to be allowed. I'm not sure what type of gun I'll get, but I'll continue the classes and learn about shooting and caring for different ones until I decide.

AKA_Monet 03-02-2005 11:02 PM

I dunno up here where I live if the NRA is all that active... But my dad took me out shooting once in the "woods" where I shot a 22 and a small semi automatic pistol...

I was only 14...

Since that time, my dad has a Glock, 357 Magnum and some other semi automatic pistol... He really believes in home defense... But, he does not USE his guns, which are EXTREMELY unsafe...

I do recommend a GOOD class on how to aim and fire, with proper care of your weapon...

My husband has some sort of pistol in the house... But we may get a gun lock if we ever have children...

But I will NEVER forget when I live in Dallas, Texas (God Bless Texas) right down from the major hospitals that deals with alot of gunshot wounds was a shooting range that had a marquis. They would always adverstise things like "2 for 1 38 Special for your loved one with ammunition..."

Besides, folks are too crazy and unmedicated in SoCal to have concealed weapons permits...

That's why the course is wonderful - you get to try out a LOT of different guns, and see what you feel most comfortable with (and not afraid of).

Good rule of thumb: Never aim unless you plan to shoot. Never shoot unless you plan to kill.

If you can't dig deep down inside and realize that you can kill someone, don't get a gun, as you'll only freeze up should you need to use it - and end up dead.

I have a Lady Smith & Wesson revolver, and that's what I keep with me most of the time. The handle is smaller, and fit my hands nicely. I also have a .357 Magnum, which is what I first trained with. I pretty much use that for target practice, because it's bigger & heavier. I prefer automatics, but I have a nasty habit of getting my thumb in the way & I'd like to keep it! :) You'll also want a headset (your hearing can be pretty well destroyed while you practice) and goggles (to keep the gun residue out of your eyes. The course will also teach you what YOUR state laws are, so you can keep within the law. It was one long day, and the one shorter range day, but I suggest that you consider practicing several times before you carry. States differ, but it was pretty easy to be licensed to carry a concealed weapon for both my mother and me.

My brother has a really nice range, with both stationary & moving targets, so I practice there. Most of the NRA instructors are only too happy to sponsor someone in their course for their own range - ask around at the class and find the most convenient one for you.

One last thing (for now): if you have children, or have company with kids, PLEASE make sure you have a good place to store & lock your weapon! No matter what, kids are curious, and will play with a gun if they see it. FWIW, when kids are around, my locked guns are in my locked car in the garage!

Good luck!

Jill1228 03-03-2005 03:25 AM

Nope don't have one...guns give me the heebie jeebies. I think Mr. 1228 wants to get one pnce we permanently move to the US but i vetoed that one...heebie jeebies

kiml122 03-03-2005 08:56 AM

Yes we actually have 2 in our house. Have I ever shot them...only went to the shoot range once. My S.O. wanted to make sure that I knew how to use it. Why are the guns in the house, well my S.O. was robbed at gun point at his place of employment about 10 yars ago the Saturday before Christmas and he has had one ever since. He actually has a license to carry it.

Going to the shooting range once was enough for me. Do I think that I would be able to ever shoot someone if I had to....not really sure.

Thanks for the info. I see I'm not the only person contemplating a purchase. :D

LOL @ kids are curious! If they FEAR of whatever is put into them, they won't touch anything (speaking from experience). :D I understand what you are saying.

Re: Do Any of You Own a Gun?

I don't own one and never will b/c anything that has the power to snuff out life like that scares me. My friend has one and I hate it when he even takes it out to clean it. His is pretty small (I think) but I don't know what kind it is.
If we ever got married, I think that I'd ask him to get rid of it. A sister is fine with a good home security system. :D

NRA

I am scheduled to take the FIRST Steps Pistol class on the 19th of this month. I can hardly wait.

For those in Northern VA, the cost is $75 and the instructor is Mike Wilson located on S. Reynolds St. Anyway, if you want more info here is the website:

http://users.rcn.com/sybaris/

This is where I am going to take my lesson. Its only one Saturday and its two parts. Classroom and range. Pretty good deal.

After you obtain a certificate of completion, then go to the local police department (APD) on Mill Rd and they will help you from there.

Just wanted to help. Happy shooting and be careful! Did I mention I was really excited!

Ok, this post is hilarious! :)

But I have a question for all of the folk getting trained in busting a cap in somebody's behind. LOL
Question: What do you say when you shoot someone and the police arrive and take you to jail? What if the person dies and you don't have a self-defense defense b/c the person did not have a lethal weapon, but was only going to snatch your purse. I'm an atty but not a criminal atty so I don't know the law (and it is by state) but ya'll need to come up to speed on the law of your state as to what is self-defense when you use your "baby .22s." LOL

I have frequent shooter miles at the shooting range so I have pretty good aim. The law here where I reside is if you are being attacked, robbed, or what have you, you are pretty much good using self defense as long as you don't shoot the attacker in the back.

A fire arm can come in handy and they are more for then busting caps....

A while ago, I came home from work and I was thinking....I gotta go use it bad....to pull in my drive way to find a Cujo (a big dog). I opened my car door and Cujo attempted to attack me. I am like I gotta go bad, so I called 911 and was like there is a Cujo in my drive attempting to attack me....the operator say Ma'am we have no officers in the vincinity...I can get someone there in 20-30 minutes . We all know 20-30 minutes for the po po is like 2-3 days...so I pulled out Cinnamon, rolled down the window and shot up in the air.....Cujo went scurring away....I got to make it to the Ladies Room just in time.

You know here in Lowsyana, anything goes. LOL Naaaaaaaaaaa.

I spoke with an officer. He informed me of my rights. If a so and so attempts to come in my place after the alarm has sounded and he has been warned...POP! POP!

If after I have locked my place and am on my way to my car and so and so wants to do something after being warned...POP! POP!

If a so and so attempts to car jack me (and I don't have time to reach for my PIECE)...he can have the car! :p

Please never shoot a gun in the air. If you are ever in this situation again just shoot the dog or aim at a solid wall. Just where do you think that bullet goes after you shot it in the air ?
