What Was Your First "Real" Handbag?
This thread was inspired by kddani's first D&B handbag purchase :)
What was the first "good" handbag you ever purchased? I fondly remember mine; it was a little rectangular beige/brown Gucci monongram bag with a zipper on top and a shoulder strap. And a green and red fabric stripe down the middle. I bought it in 11th grade after saving part of my Wendy's paychecks for a couple of months. It was $120.00, which probably cost more than the rest of my wardrobe combined, but I didn't care 'cause I thought I was THE SHIT when I was carrying that baby :D It's a shame I used it to death; it would probably be considered "vintage" today! |
My first decent handbag was a Liz Claiborne that I bought in 9th grade.Cost me $80 in the early 80's.I bought it because I got tired of buying cheap purses that fell apart immediately. So my mom suggested that I spend a little money and get a better product, which for that time, it was.I have since moved up from there and now have a tremendous appreciation for Coach.
ETA:Instead of buying my niece an Easter basket this year,I am going to get her a small Vera Bradley and fill it instead. She likes little cute handbags too and I figured I might as well start her early on how to choose a good product. |
Oh, it was all about sporting some Liz in the 80s. I had one that was blue with little raised traingles all over it. Of course, it came with a l-o-n-g thin strap (remember those?), not like the chunkier short ones we have today. :)
|
Oh girl, I so remember the raised logo for the liz purse in the 80's. I had like 6 different styles by the time I was a senior in high school!! I have since moved on to various doonies (sp?) and coaches but I still smile when I see any style liz bag!!:)
|
My first real purse i bought in my Sr yr of high school and it was a Dooney and spent $70-80 on it. My first purse was actually those nylon ones in the early 80s theywere barrel shaped and the other one was nylon clutch with a velcro rip opening
|
My first real purse was a Liz Claiborne-bought it at Joske's (now closed)in 1986-I LOVED that purse-I used it until every corner had a hole. I finally had to throw it away :(.
|
my first was a coach that was like $200. i have upgraded to LV and now want a gucci. my dream is to have balenciaga, marc jacobs, and of coure a birkin. *sigh*
|
Like KR, my first bag was a Gucci.
Like KR, I knew I was THE SHIT when carrying it! :) (I still have the bag!) I am a handbag ho! Mr. 1228 doesn't complain that much...because he doesn't know how much they cost :D However, when we were in Vegas, I told him I was heading to the The Forum shops. As I was heading out the door I heard him say, "Stay AWAY from the Coach store!" Friggin party pooper! It has been a while since I bought a bag...I think its time It could be worse. I could be like my sister and be a shoe ho! (my sister is the black Imelda Marcos) Thank Goodness I love Vera Bradleys because they don't break the bank |
My first bag was a Louis Vuitton that my parents got me for Hanukkah when I was 16. It wasn't as popular back then as it is now so I didn't use it all that much when I first got it. I use it frequently now.
I had a few Nine West bags and Fossil bags after that but I didn't get a really nice handbag again until my senior year in college when my parents got me a Burberry for my birthday. Now I have a whole collection of nice handbags. My boyfriend actually just bought me a pink Prada handbag for my birthday which I love, love, love! |
I got a Coach bag (small saddle-type) when I was 16. It was part of my mother's campaign to get me to start carrying a purse and to be more feminine. I guess it worked, because now I buy at least two purses each season. :)
|
I think my first name purse was a Liz Claiborne :o that I bought in the 1980s, when I was in college. I rocked Lizes for a few years, before they fell out of fashion.
|
I got my first LV bag for my 18th birthday, it was the pochette. I remember my mom coming to the store with me knowing that I wanted some pricey purse which she was ok with but when she saw how small it was she flipped! Either way I must have trained her well because for my 21st birtday a few months ago she got me a Speedy 30! Now I'm on a mission for either a Chanel ligne cambon bag or an LV Manhattan bag. Wait list for both :(
|
I got a Coach for my 16th birthday. It cost something like $100.

I loved Joske's! We would come to SA from the Valley and Joske's was just so cool to a little hick from the valley! Too bad it's gone. I had three of those Liz Calibornes in green, blue, and purple. I thought was so cool! In high school, my boyfriend got me a Ralph Lauren green plaid. I loved that purse! I had 2 different styles in that plaid. I also bought my self a red coach "feed bag" style purse. Lately I've just had cute but not expensive purses. Not that I haven't looked, just haven't found one that is just right. |
Wow, I feel left out...I have no "good" handbag. :p
|
my first was a Burberry bag that was on sale for $350
|
I had almost all of the Liz Claiborne bags too. I started in the 7th grade. I think that was the 1984-85 school year.
|
I think my first one of a Kate Spade sam bag in black. I still use it today. It was given to me my senior year in high school. I love that bag! No one else had one there (and no one prob. does not...my hometown is not very fashion forward) My Kates, Louis', and Burberry all sit in their warm little bags on shelf in my closet. I am saving my pennies for a Marc Jacobs right now....but I think it will be a while before he joins the clan.
Does anyone want to reccomend me a good D&B...I don't want one of the trendy it bags...something a little more classic, but fun. |
Who could forget their first?
It was a navy Coach zipper bag that I bought at Rich's in Atlanta when I was a sophomore in college. It was my first purchase on my Visa card, and it cost $80. I thought it was exceptionally extravagant! Many D&B's, Kate Spades and Cole Haans later, I am officially a handbag addict.
|
I was a late bloomer. I didn't actually start frequently carrying a purse until I was into my sophomore or junior year of college. And then I would usually buy whatever I thought was cute at Target or on sale at Younkers (local dept store).
When I graduated from college, I starting buying more cute bags and this Christmas, my husband bought me my first Coach. I intend to obtain one good handbag a year, as budget allows. :) |
I got a Dooney and Burke when I was a freshman in high school. My father, the moron that he is, thought it would be a great present for a 14 year old.
My mom bought me a Brighton purse for my 16th birthday, and this last Christmas my boyfriend at the time bought me my first Coach purse. I'm now addicted to Coach. I want another! |
When I was in HS people didn't carry purses, but what bag you carried your books in really mattered. The cool girls had Le Sport Sac Travel Totes in various colors. My two favorites from that time were pink and black.
When I got to college purses were the "thing." My first real purse was a Coach. I LOVED that purse, carried it whenever I didn't have my backpack with me for a while and still have it. Of course, then I went to Italy, fell in love with Italian handbags and became a true addict. |
my first real bag was my all black leather coach bag that i got for my 19th birthday about a year and a half ago. i go EVERYWHERE with it and i love it :) im trying to suck my parents into another one this birthday ... or even this easter :)
|
I completely forgot about the Le Sport Sacs!! They were so popular when I was younger and everyone just to have one!! Then in high school everyone carried Espirit bags and Liz Claiborne purses!!
Now I've traded it all in for a big ugly diaper bag!! No fancy purses for me for a long time! |

:::stands on soapbox::::: I TOO AM A HANDBAG HO :) Well I get my "Ho" tendencies from my mom whose collection of coach, dooneys, LV's, and Kate Spades is so immense that she needs to display them in the "handbag ho museum"... anyways.. My first bag was when I was 21 I went and splurged on a coach with a matching wallet. It was the small hobo kind and the wallet fit perfect. It cost me somewhere around 580 ish. It was well worth it. I am now a full addict and have 5 coach bags, 2 coach wallets, and one dooney. :) unfortunetly my boyfriend wont buy me a purse...and often tells me to "STAY AWAY from the coach store" but im addicted :) Plus they are the bestest |
