Dungeons & Dragons

Mr. Buttonz plays, and has been trying to get me intrested. How many of you play? Any advice or tips for someone just getting started?

AlphaSigOU 02-12-2005 02:46 AM

Played it once in college while in the dorms... never really got into fantasy role-playing games. Went through all the trouble of creating a character, and played it through only one game which lasted all night. I was dead tired and finally had to go get some sack time, so I let one of the other players handle my character... needless to say who promptly proceeded to give it a quick death.

Just be careful and don't let the fantasy rule your life. I've heard more than a few stories of D&D players gone off the deep end.

PM_Mama00 02-12-2005 11:09 AM

Some guys on our campus play. They hang out in the student org office. They wear satin-type shirts with anime kinda characters on them.

It's definitely not the "in" thing around here. No offense, but I don't get how people "role play". What's it all about?

cash78mere 02-12-2005 11:44 AM

there were several people, mainly men, in my high school who played all the time. they were obsessed with it and would talk about it non-stop.

they tried to get me to play once, but i didn't want to get sucked in because it didn't seem like my thing.

as long as you don't get too into it, i'm sure it's probably a great game or Mr. Buttonz wouldn't want you to play. good luck!

I think, if anything, most of us gave up D&D in junior high school.

Munchkin03 02-12-2005 12:58 PM

I've never met a person who's actually played D&D. Magic, yes. But not D&D.

Oh my god...what kind of loser doesn't know what MAGIC THE GATHERING is?!? Seriously, get a clue!

;) :p :D

I think my brother played D&D once and then I made fun of him so I think he stopped...sorry, that's all I know about the game. Have fun if you decide to start playing! :)

That sounds about right. I haven't played since 1982.

If someone like fantasy sports, gambling, and performing, than that person would enjoy D&D. It was fun, but its very time consuming if done right. You have to spend several hours each week, on a regular schedule, playing it. That's great when you're 14. It doesn't really cut it when you're older and you have a lot of things going on in your life. Also, you have to find a group of people that you enjoy spending all this time with.

So, if you have the time to spare, are willing to commit the time, and like the people that you'll play with, give it a try.

33girl 02-12-2005 02:27 PM

The first Mr. 33 played D & D. I tried to understand what was happening, but I just couldn't get it...their game and characters had been going on forever. It was like trying to get into LA Law or ER in the third season when everyone else already knows what is going on.

They weren't psycho into it, no costumes or anything like that - yes it was kinda geeky, but as far as I'm concerned no worse than playing Sims or PlayStation for 80 hours at a stretch.

If you want to try it out, (bear with me it's been a looooooong time since I thought about this stuff) you need to have a character that has powers on the same scale as the others in the game or you'll get killed really quickly and it'll be really boring for you. Don't be afraid to tell him if you really aren't into it. He'd rather have you say so than have you drag down the game.

But when does it get TOO out of hand, though? I've heard of thousands of D&D diehards going to D&D conventions and isht like that.

I think that there are conventions, and that was just over-the-top for me.

Also, like anything else that can suck up a lot of time, you have to have a schedule, and stick to it.

When me and my friends played, it was in one of our houses. We did not dress up. We usually ate pizza and listened to Led Zeppelin. It was half playing D&D and half hanging out.

When you're living your character's life outside of the game - i.e. if your character is a priest and you give up sex. Or when it interferes with your studies or life - you're playing instead of going to class. Same as anything else you get involved in, I'd say.

Conventions for stuff like D & D isn't any different, IMO, than the people who are straight laced accountants all year and when Buffett comes to town, they put on a grass skirt and get drunk and stoned enough for 10 people. And there are LOTS of those. Everyone needs some sort of outlet.

KSigkid 02-12-2005 02:36 PM

Never played, never really cared to learn too much about it. It never really interested me at all.

valkyrie 02-12-2005 02:43 PM

Does D&D have anything to do with furries, or is that totally different?

33girl 02-12-2005 02:49 PM

TWO DIFFERENT THINGS, YO.

:D

I'm sure there is some crossover as with many hobbies, but D & D player does not equal furry.

midwesterngirl 02-12-2005 02:54 PM

Why does this make me think of Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons?

shut up kiki!!!

i've actually heard of it because Seth Cohen plays it, but i honestly have no clue what it actually is. i don't know anyone that plays those games.

aephi alum 02-12-2005 03:48 PM

I've never played D&D, but my husband and his friends used to play back when they were in middle school. I don't think they had any very elaborate scenarios... they just created powerful characters with powerful weapons and beat up on the bad guys - or each other.

Has anyone played live-action role-playing games? At my alma mater, the Assassins' Guild runs several LARPs each year, some of which run for ten days! I played one once (a one-evening game), and my character actually survived (though he was about to get killed when the game ended - yeah, my character was a guy). It wasn't really my thing, though, so I never officially joined the Assassins' Guild.

Things like this definitely have their place, as long as they don't take over your life to the point where they interfere with school/work/family ... as with any pastime.

I played D+D for a while in High school and still enjoy it when I go home and hang out with my geeky friends. But our real joy was Vampire. Now THERE was a great game. Same premises, but much more live action based.

Optimist Prime 02-13-2005 01:01 AM

my advice is to you stop dating nerds and find a cool frat boy

kstar 02-13-2005 11:56 AM

Roleplaying is fun. It's very inexpensive, and a good way to just hang out with your friends.

If you get too into it, however, it's a bad thing. Just like you don't want your life to revolve around work, you don't want it to revolve around gaming.

LARPing, Live Action Role Playing, is one of the ways that you can get too into it. As are the conventions...

I however don't like D&D, though Ksir does. I run White Wolf systems, mostly.

There is nothing wrong with role playing, it is definately better than Everquest where you stare at your computer and only interact with other people through that, or vopnsole games where you don't interect with other people at all.

Where do you think some of us learned to play D&D? I met my husband through D&D at his fraternity. My freshman year there were 10 brothers and 3 pledges that played on a weekly basis. They played every Saturday from noon to 5-ish, ran out to grab food, and made it back to the house for Star Trek: The Next Generation at 6.

Yes, I *am* a geek. :P

Your enjoyment of D&D will depend on who you're playing with and what their playing style is. We game with one other couple, and with a second couple where the guy runs the table and the girl sometimes plays. It's a combination of storytelling and problem-solving, with the problems solved with a lot of dice-rolling and mathematics.

In long-running campaigns, you'll have people who are at 12th level or something, and have been playing those characters for years. If you come in at 1st level, yeah, you'll turn into paste during the first combat. Not fun.

In some areas, there are "Living Greyhawk" campaigns where you run your character through self-contained scenarios that usually take about 3-6 hours (4 hour average). Many people will have one low-level character (say, 3rd level, kind of a newbie), and one high-level character (say, 12th level, powerhouse), so they can switch them around. If you're playing in a low-level group, it's much easier to keep up.

I got frustrated with the 7-hour marathon sessions that kept on going for weeks at a time. The shorter sessions are much more fun.

And I agree that you can't let it run your life. If your main conversation with friends is that you just levelled your halfling rogue and picked up +1 mithril chain armor that gives you +2 to your AC and blah blah blah, you need to find a new hobby! But if you just play with friends on the weekend, no biggie.

If you like reading fantasy novels and watching fantasy movies, you'll probably get into it pretty easily. If you hate fantasy and hate doing math, you won't enjoy it as much.

[As a side note, there is a hierarchy of sci-fi/fantasy/etc fans. Allow me to say that regular D&D'ers are slightly above or slightly below Live Action Role-Players (I wouldn't dress up to play, no way), and everyone and everything is waaaaaaaaaay above furries. Ewwwwwwwwww.]

Corsulian 02-15-2005 11:13 AM

I was all about it like back in freshman year of HS...haven't really played it since though I did buy the computer game Neverwinter Nights just to bring back some old memories and cuz I actually had free time over winter break

I don't think so. But my husband and I were all over the cartoon three or so years ago when they were rerunning it on FOX on Saturday mornings.
