amazing race 7 speculation

CBS announced today that The Amazing Race 7, the seventh edition of its resurgent two-time Emmy winning reality series, will debut Tuesday, March 1 at 9PM ET/PT with a special two-hour premiere episode.

Beginning the following week, The Amazing Race 7 will air Tuesdays at 9PM ET/PT, the same time period in which the sixth installment of the series is currently airing.

The announcement means that The Amazing Race 7 will premiere only three weeks after the finale of The Amazing Race 6 -- an unusually short break that would appear to conflict with the network's previous publicly stated programming strategies.

Last fall, CBS cited a desire for a "cool down" period following The Amazing Race 5's highly rated summer run as its reason to postpone The Amazing Race 6's originally announced September 25 debut until later in the season. "We've seen (evidence) that it really helps to put a little space between one version and the next," CBS Vice President Kelly Kahl told Daily Variety at the time. "We want to let the audience breathe a little before we bring the show back."

However, according to Zap2It.com, CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler cited the ratings momentum that The Amazing Race 6 has continued as the justification for the quick turnaround during today's Television Critic Association Press Tour.

The discrepancy would seem to be explained by only a few possibilities -- either CBS has truly changed its programming strategies in the past few months, or perhaps it was being less than forthcoming with the fact that its decision to delay TAR6 had less to do with a desire for "downtime" and more to do with holding the then resurgent series back to serve (as it eventually did, and as we speculated at the time) as a replacement for its first weeknight casualty of the new fall television season. Welcome to Hollywood.

The Amazing Race 6 will end with a two-hour finale on Tuesday, February 8. The Amazing Race 6, which regularly wins its time period in key demographics, is currently averaging 11.27 million viewers, a 4.5/11 rating/share in Adults 18-49 and a 5.1/11 in Adults 25-54. The Amazing Race 7 -- rumored to be featuring Survivor: All-Stars couple Amber Brkich and fiance Rob Mariano competing as a team -- began filming in late November.

Given TAR6's finale date and the fact that Survivor: Palau is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, February 17, it had been speculated that CBS might use The Amazing Race's downtime to move Wickedly Perfect, the new reality series that it is currently airing in Survivor's Thursday time period, to The Amazing Race's Tuesday time period for the balance of its ten-episode run.

However, as part last week's Survivor: Palau premiere announcement, CBS announced that Wickedly Perfect would be exiled to the Saturday evening time period originally intended for The Amazing Race 6 and most recently occupied by The Will -- which it yanked from its schedule following one low-rated episode broadcast.

CBS's The Amazing Race 7 announcement means that like last week's Survivor announcement, The Amazing Race 7's broadcast run will take it through the May 2005 Nielsen ratings sweeps period -- toward which CBS appears to be directing its younger-skewing programming (even more so than usual) in an attempt to ensure that it succeeds in capturing the Adults 18-49 demographic May sweeps win as the capstone to its record-setting season.

While CBS has led all broadcast networks among total viewers for each of the last two seasons, the Adults 18-49 title (won by NBC the last four years, with Fox placing second) has long-eluded the older-skewing erstwhile Tiffany Network. Earlier this fall, CBS won the November sweeps period in Adults 18-49 for the first time since 1980 -- a feat it no doubt hopes to duplicate this May.

Demonstrating the enormous difference that one season can make, season-to-date, CBS is first in Adults 25-54 (4.9/12) with a 0.4 lead over second place ABC (4.5/11) and first in Adults 18-49 (4.0/11), 0.1 ahead of ABC (3.9/11). NBC is third for the 2004-2005 season in Adults 18-49 (3.7/10) and Adults 25-54 (4.3/10) while Fox is -- as it has for each of the past two seasons -- counting on incredible numbers from American Idol 4 (which premieres tonight) to salvage its season.

ms_gwyn 02-09-2005 12:59 PM

you all know that I love this show....but I am worried about over saturation

AznSAE 02-09-2005 02:15 PM

the amazing race needs a greek chat team. does anyone want to be my partner for the next season? i promise i won't yell, be bossy, piss you off, and be all wacked out ;).

smiley21 02-09-2005 02:33 PM

For season 8, they are casting families. I do not know how exciting it could be with kids. This could the beginning of AR's downfall which is really sad. But I really do not want see kids running all over the world. I suspect there is an age requirement like above 18. Let's hope

valkyrie 02-09-2005 02:34 PM

I don't watch Survivor but I can't believe they're putting Amber and Rob on TAR -- how LAME. Now they can have 900 teams who are either ACTORS or MODELS or FORMER REALITY SHOW CONTESTANTS.

I am so there, everyone that I've asked in the world have denied me.

I could be wrong (it happens), but I doubt families means kids, at least kids younger than 16 or so. If for no other reason, I would think liability concerns would keep kids out, even if nothing else did.

I would expect families to mean siblings, parents and grown kids, married couple and in-laws, grandparents and grown or college age grandkids, etc.

ETA: I checked out the Application Form for TAR8 at CBS. Team members must be at least 12, and if they are under 18 a parent or legal guardian must also be on the team.

I don't want to loose the love of this show....but this is getting pretty close pushing the envelope for me.

I want real people damnit, that is what makes this show great. NOT BARBIE DOLLS...and the family show....that will just be a headache....

Sister Havana 02-09-2005 04:30 PM

CBS has The Amazing Race 7 page up now, with the new teams. No models this time, but we do have Miss South Carolina 2002 (she's on a team with her boyfriend, who was a POW in Iraq). Other teams in the mix: a set of brothers, grandparents, two best friends teams (one male, one female), a gay couple, a set of grandparents, an off-and-on dating couple with a 17 year age difference, a set of roommates who look like the Paris Hilton Lookalike Twins, a married couple, and a mother-son team.

valkyrie 02-09-2005 04:58 PM

Oh man, I wonder if my dad would go on with me.

bcdphie 02-09-2005 04:58 PM

I am waiting for them to allow Canadians on the show or for a Canadian version.

cool!!! i updated my thread starting post

looking at the grandparents, i am wondering.....is it common for a man to be named Meredith?? could be just me, but I have never heard of that name for a man...

MysticCat 02-10-2005 10:30 AM

Meredith started out as a surname, and it used to be very common (still is in some places) to give second or third sons their mother's maiden name as a given name.

My guess is that it was more common in previous generations to run across a man named Meredith. The one famous male Meredith that comes to mind is Meredith Wilson, who wrote The Music Man.

smiley21 02-11-2005 07:09 AM

Phil said this season is the most exciting. He says that about all of them. I hope this one is extra good. I see a lot of interesting teams. I think it is fascinating to see how different people react to these situations.

smiley21 02-28-2005 03:53 PM

starts tomorrow!!!

AznSAE 03-01-2005 11:18 AM

damn!!! i cant watch it because i have class tonight with a midterm.

Sistermadly 03-01-2005 12:01 PM

Someone PM me when the Survivor trash have been eliminated. kthxbi.

Sister Havana 03-01-2005 12:06 PM

I set my DVR. :D

dzandiloo 03-01-2005 12:44 PM

I learned this weekend that Susan of the mother/son team is a DZ...need to confirm that, but I know who I'll be rooting for this season!!!

RedAngel 03-01-2005 07:33 PM

Looking forward to this season as well. If we are lucky the survivor duo won't last long.

DaffyKD 03-02-2005 03:46 AM

I can't stand Debbie and Bianca or the on/off dating couple. Everyone else I can tolerate, at least for this week. If all the teams would forget about Rob and Amber and concentrate on themselves, they would all be better off. Let Rob and Amber shoot themselves in the foot on their own time.

DaffyKD

GeoffZ 03-02-2005 04:01 AM

I'm already over Amber and Rob. It's funny how alot of the teams are gunning for them. My favorites so far are the Mom (she's so cute) & Son, the Boyfriends, and the Brothers.

I can't believe Debbie & Bianca got $10,000 each. I could go home happy with just winning that.

mmcat 03-02-2005 09:37 AM

beautiful visuals...but you expect that.
rob and amber are going to learn quickly that the game is rough and they are targets.

valkyrie 03-02-2005 12:47 PM

The only people who annoyed me were -- I think it's the on again/off again couple -- the guy who kept saying "suck it up" -- dude, STFU, and of course Rob and Amber. I didn't particularly care for the pageant girl either. Everyone else was fine so far, but I missed the first hour.

SATX*APhi 03-02-2005 03:18 PM

I also missed the first hour, but I don't like two teams: Debbie/Bianca for being annoying and Ray/Deana because they remind me of Lori/Bolo from Season 6. I don't think I saw the Rob/Amber drama so I have nothing against them winning at this point.

ms_gwyn 03-02-2005 03:32 PM

The only thing that annoyed me about Rob and Amber, was Rob kept repeating, "we already won a million dollars", i really wanted Amber to say...um honey...I won the million and remember two words...pre-nup

The guy who kept saying suck it up, I was yelling at the tv...um hello altitude adjustment, STFU

The Mom and Son team is cute

but I don't have any favorites yet

polarpi 03-02-2005 04:47 PM

I'm actually okay with all the teams - Ray and Deana are annoying, though.

ms_gwyn, I was thinking the same thing when Rob said that - it almost looked like Amber did the "yeah, sure" smile/smirk into the camera and just let Rob go on talking about "them" winning the million :)

Looking forward to next week's episode already!

dzandiloo 03-02-2005 04:54 PM

I'm actually OK w/the Rob/Amber team, surprisingly...I think it's b/c I'm already used to his personality. I thought he would bug me more. I love how Amber just smiles when he says stuff like "we already won a million...."

I already really dislike Debbie/Bianca, the "lifelong friends" (whatever that means, kissy-kissy-love-you-blah-blah-blah). If I was POW/Beauty Queen, I would definitely remember them when it comes time to yield someone for their little "go to the middle sandpile" instructions. Not smart to be cut throat that early.

Also don't like this seasons cross b/t Lori/Bolo/Jonathan/Victoria. They need to go.

Sad to see the hillbillies go (did anyone else love the subtitles when they spoke?). They should have been around a little longer for comedy's sake.

Rooting for my DZ sister & her son, though. Thought they did pretty well, but her som needs to lay off trying to form alliances with everyone he meets.

The1calledTKE 03-02-2005 06:04 PM

I can't believe CBS is doing a reality show about Amber and Rob's wedding for the fall season. I bet cbs is paying them good money for that too. How much more money do they need?

azdtaxi 03-02-2005 08:02 PM

I love the boyfriends ... they are my favs they kept say the funniest randomest things

ZTABullwinkle 03-02-2005 10:25 PM

Part of me is really rooting for the ex-POW (who I recognized as soon as I saw him come out of the helicopter) and the pageant queen. I was really rooting for the two friends from South Carolina...how funny was it when they got out to pull the wagon because the guy was petaling too slow!!!:p

I think I am going to tire of the boyfriends very quickly. As for Rob and Amber...GRRRR! He was too annoying on Survivor, now I have to listen to him on Amazing Race? Yuck!

Shit, I'd probably do the same thing...all for the money.

They probably had dinner with Trista and Ryan or something.

AOTTAdvisor 03-08-2005 11:22 AM

Okay, I do think this season is going to be good!
I LOVE the boyfriends(they cracked me up!) and I liked the mother/son team, too. I did NOT like the blonde barbie twins and the "life long friends" who were WAY to kissey and huggy. The POW and the beauty queen was kind of on my nerves, too.
So sad that the hill billies got Philiminated but there subtitles were HYSTERICAL!!
Rob and Amber aren't as bad as I thought.....I agree to just let them be and they will shoot themselves in the foot!

valkyrie 03-09-2005 01:34 PM

Rob is an asshole.

Ali*Z 03-09-2005 03:03 PM
