MTV's My Super Sweet 16

I tried doing a search on this but couldn't find anything. Did anyone else watch last night's "My Super Sweet 16?" Was it the most annoying thing you've ever seen? This reminded me of being in 10th grade again, but to have one person exemplify all that annoyed me about some of the girls at my high school was impressive.

I also thought it was funny that her "ideal" place for her Sweet 16 was the same place my prom and a lot of my friend's weddings took place. I never would have chosen it as a Sweet 16 venue. But then again, I didn't and don't think that the lavishness of a party is an indication of love from your parents.

smiley21 02-02-2005 03:38 PM

i have been watching it the last few weeks. last night's episode.... that girl is so spoiled!!! and she was so snotty! it was like watching a car accident...just awful, but i could not turn away

SOPi_Jawbreaker 02-02-2005 03:42 PM

Oh, are you talking about that girl that started crying because her parents said they weren't getting her a car? She was soooo annoying and such a drama queen.

It's such a ridiculous show. I can't believe there are people out there spending $100,000 or $200,000 on their kid's 16th birthday. There are people out there that spend less than that on a house.

rho4life 02-02-2005 03:44 PM

So far, the girls who did their party in the hard rock La jolla was my fav ep. It's total train wreck tv, you don't want to watch the carnage, but you can't turn away. :)

WVU alpha phi 02-02-2005 04:20 PM

Where do these people have all these lavish sweet 16 parties? I'm from a pretty nice area and I don't know anyone who threw a huge bash for their sweet 16, and my friends said they don't either. I did get a car from my parents, but that was it.. no huge celebration or anything. Has anyone ever gone to a big sweet 16 like that?

bruinaphi 02-02-2005 04:38 PM

These are common here in LA. I went to quite a few parties like this in high school. Usually the parents and kids decide if they want to spend the money on a bar or bat mitzvah or Sweet 16. For those who aren't Jewish, they have the Sweet 16 to make up for the bar and bat mitzvahs. My friend Nicole had the first party at the new tower of the Century Plaza Hotel in their pink marble ballroom. Her theme was Cinderella's Going to the Ball and we all wore old fashioned ball gowns and the invitations were hand delivered in pizza size boxes and were printed on silk. It was OUT OF CONTROL. Of course, Nicole was nothing like Ava, and her parents were nothing like Ava's parents. I am sure Nicole's wedding had a hard time competing.

OleMissGlitter 02-02-2005 04:49 PM

I admit I've been watching it. Last night's show was crazy. That poor girl, oh I would hate to be around when mommy and daddy cannot provide for her anymore! My mother would have never let me wear clothes like that anywhere! I will say this, I am jealous that she went shopping in Paris!

_Opi_ 02-02-2005 05:51 PM

Ok, I'll admit it too...I watch the show on occassion.

Yeah, I'm really surprised by that girl's parents. Her mother takes her to Paris to get a new dress and her dad drops $200K for a sweet 16. I mean she sneaks off to Santa Barbara, and the next thing you know..her daddy buys her a truck. Talk about parenting

**although I secretly wish I had a dad like that.....you know, shed a tear, get a car**

ZTABullwinkle 02-02-2005 06:39 PM

I am so glad that I wasn't the only one who has this "guilty pleasure" and watched these train wrecks. Who has $200,000 to spend on a Sweet 16, let alone a wedding. Those girls were right...If this is her Sweet 16 party, what in the world will her wedding be like?!?

OTH, wouldn't you love to know what in the world these parents did for work as a living????

chideltjen 02-02-2005 07:48 PM

I had a friend in the bay who had a nice (not 200K though) Sweet 16. The parents rented out a hotel banquet hall and invited the whole family and her friends. And dress was semi-formal.

Though I had a friend who's mom through her a REALLY lavish Cotillion. Those are pretty much weddings without the grooms at the age of 18. A LOT goes into the prep.

But I did catch the show this weekend and I couldn't figure out what the hell it was... a special maybe? But a SERIES? Wow... MTV has really lost it's touch.

SSS1365 02-02-2005 08:05 PM

I caught a few minutes of last night's episode, and yes that girl was super annoying. I can't believe what these people's parents do for them! But I just love, ya know, like those people that say "like" all the time, and like, ya know, end every sentence like it's a question?

PM_Mama00 02-02-2005 09:59 PM

OMG I was gona post a thread about this earlier. That girl drove me up the wall!

I had a Sweet 16 at a hall, but I wore just a nice Sunday dress and my friends wore khakis or nice pants or whatever.

I like watching the show cuz it reminds me of my cousins in NY who had parties almost like those.

ASUADPi 02-02-2005 10:24 PM

Honestly I started watching one episode and the girl just annoyed me to no end. She was a total snotty bitch. IMPO. She was acting like it was her wedding or something. HELLO IT'S ONLY YOUR SWEET 16!!!!!!! Not that bid of a damn deal!!!!!!!!

(FYI I watch the one with the girl who was worried about her mom getting drunk. Plus she looked horrible in the dress she had made for her because she DID NOT have the body for it)

33girl 02-02-2005 10:37 PM

I don't normally wish ill will on anyone, but oh do I wish that Ava's parents would lose every dime they have so she's forced to go work cleaning bathrooms at Burger King.

As much of a monster as she was, I've got to lay some of the blame on her parents, who are obviously made of Jell-O.

Taualumna 02-03-2005 12:21 AM

I've never seen this show, but from the sounds of it, it is very tacky. Do these young people get any training before their sweet 16s? Girls participating in cotillions are trained, as are kids getting ready for their bar or bat mitzvahs.

I'm wondering if these are parents who are just willing to spend lots of money on their kids Talk about spoiled.

UKDaisy 02-03-2005 12:46 AM

I refuse to accept that drama-queen/princess style/i want everything therefore i get everything is acceptable.

I love throwing parties and such but give me a break. That just makes me feel bad.

I'd like to punch a majority of those girls.

Yup.... I'm from NY and definitely had friends whose parents spent more money on their Sweet 16 than mine will on my wedding (plus the cost of their own wedding. lol). If anything, I enjoy watching it because it makes me feel a lot better about how grounded I am (or hope I am at least). Plus, it brings back memories..... BUT, yeah, how about that mother who got totally smashed at her daughter's sweet 16!!???!! I can't imagine, and the father looked like he was in his mid 20s.... for the split second you saw him.

GeoffZ 02-03-2005 02:54 AM

This show is my guilty pleasure too. These kids are insanely spoiled. Ava has to be the worst so far. She is like 16 going on 6. The fake crying at the restaurant was riddiculous. It's her parents fault though.

I liked the first episode at the Hard Rock (just b/c of all the fights that broke out). What was up with the blonde girl shaving her legs in the kitchen sink? That's classy.

ShaedyKD 02-03-2005 11:03 AM

Dear MTV,

I don't think people's parents should spend $200,000.00 on a Sweet 16 party. For my Sweet 16, I had a slumber party and the next day we went to the skating rink. I had a good time, even though I didn't get a shopping spree in Paris.

Keepin' it real,
Karen

Dude, all these kids are spoiled beyond belief, and they just take it for granted. Yeah, $200K can buy a house, there's no need to spend that much on a party. Next week's episode feature's a guys 16th bday party...hopefully he won't be a b!tch like all the girls that have been on the show.

Yup.
You know, I loved it when Mom cut the credit card.
Ava, get your spoiled ass a job so you can at the least understand the value of money..

Dedicated2Delta 02-03-2005 02:32 PM

Credit Card!?!?

Cutting the credit card would have been the least of my worries. Let me, at 15 yrs old, sneak off to Santa Anywhere after my mother had told me no. I would have been grounded until I graduated from college.

But like everyone else is saying, it is her parents fault. Making her wait a day or so to get her car was a waste of time. They knew they were going to give it to her so they should have just given the truck to her on her birthday. If they wanted to teach her a lesson, they should have cancelled everything! No party, no truck, no shopping....just a day old cake from Super Walmart!

Hee, hee..http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/laugh.gif

My thing is the complete disrespect she has for her parents. The way she speaks to them and plays them.. sad, sad, sad.

Sure, give her a cake, but present it to her on a garbage can lid..

norcalchick 02-03-2005 04:35 PM

that would have been some good mtv if they didn't give her her big party and just gave her some meesly cake. or if they even forgot it!!

i think i cried on my 16th b-day. my parents forgot :( and in the middle of the day when they didn't say anything, i was upset so cried. then they felt bad and gave me some money to go shopping with my friends.

dzandiloo 02-03-2005 06:38 PM

My step-mom got carjacked on my 16th birthday...all my presents were in the trunk of the car. We were so overjoyed that the men who took her (at knife-point) decided to dump her w/o hurting her, that I completely forgot the day was my birthday for about a week....and the whole incident put so many things in perspective, I didn't even care about my forgotten birthday afterwards. (We never saw the car again, and the guys were never caught).

I watched the show this week, and was truly sickened by Ava and her parents. Uch.

ajuhdg 02-03-2005 06:51 PM

I remember my sixteenth birthday...

My parents forgot, because my sister was getting married around the same time! They all thought I was jealous of her, but I was just mad because they forgot! Then I went to this school dance and a total nerd tried to dance with me...but I wanted to dance with the school hunk, Jake. Then, I saw Jake's perfect girlfriend, Carolyn. I really wanted to die after that. Then I ran into the nerd again, and he wanted to borrow my underwear! The weird Chinese guy that my grandparents brought home got a date, and he'd only been there a few hours!

Well, my parent's finally realized that it was my birthday and they felt awful. I went to my sister's wedding and wore the dumb bridesmaid dress. A bonus though: my sister took a few muscle relaxers and it made her totally woozie! Then when everyone was leaving...they'd forgotten me again...I see Jake in his red Porsche right outside the church! We went to his house, he made me a cake, and we kissed on the table! It turned out to be a great birthday after all! *sigh*

Wait...maybe that was a movie I saw... ;) :D

Rio_Kohitsuji 02-03-2005 11:12 PM

I've seen this show once, the one with the 2 girls at the Hard Rock Cafe. I hated the blond, loved the brunette, she's wasn't as bitchy, heh :)

I plan on doing the same thing for my 22nd bday that I did for my Sweet 16.....a GIANT waterballoon/water gun fight. It was the BEST! Like seriously, my parents got those plastic pools, filled them up w/water and balloon, went nuts a the dollar store getting those el cheapo guns. Oh man, it was so fun

That sounds JUST LIKE MY 16th BIRTHDAY!

AznSAE 02-07-2005 10:35 AM

i saw a bunch of re-runs for this show over the weekend. what a load of crap! $100k-$200k on a freaking b-day party? if i was the parent, she would either get a car or a party, not both. i dont think i even got a cake on my 16th b-day.

Hahaha, after the first half of the first paragraph, I was like, "Hey, that's just like Sixteen Candles!" Duh....

Sister Havana 02-07-2005 02:01 PM

Way back in prehistoric times when I turned 16, I just had a slumber party and then we went downtown the next day. No big whoop.

ZTABullwinkle 02-16-2005 06:10 PM

For some reason, I just keep watching this train wreck. Did anyone see last night's? That girl was more than a bit snobby....Plus the price tag was over $400,000!!

It's my guilty pleasure too....Ava takes the cake....I have that one taped! One show...the boy lives in the next town up from me...however, our neighborhoods and income brackets are DRASTICALLY different...lol

GeoffZ 02-17-2005 01:15 AM

I think Natalie has seen Mean Girls one too many times. She was so obsessed with being popular. That came off as desperate.

I thought it was funny that Jackie, from the first show, showed up at this girls party. How many people in La Jolla did MTV go to?

FAB*SpiceySpice 02-17-2005 01:12 PM

I didn't see this weeks episode with Natalie, but last weeks with the guy Hart or Art or whatever the hell is name was...WHAT A DOUCHEBAG! And his dad, WTF...whose dad is THAT CONCERNED with being "cool"? What a toolbag. This show is so freakin' annoying and I can't stop watching it. Ava and hart should hook up, imagine that wedding.

My 16th birthday party consisted of inviting all my girl and guy friends from school (which was at the most like 50 people) and having them come to my house. We watched movies, jumped on the trampoline, ate a lot of pizza, and had cookie cake! I got a car on my birthday, but it was no brand new $70,000 Range Rover...and you know, I am ok with that. My cookie cake was SPECTACULAR...and it was huge, so I was eating it for like a month...yum. :)

Unregistered- 02-17-2005 01:26 PM

I've only seen the Hard Rock , Ava, Hart, and Natalie episodes and I see a trend -- these kids tend to come from "broken" homes where mom and dad have split or have since remarried. Oh my, do you really think that these SPINELESS moms and dads are just trying to fill some kind of void? "Sorry for traumatizing you for life by getting a divorce, honey...but here's a fucking Range Rover." And it's one thing to be bratty and shallow and materialistic, but really AVA, do you have to SOUND IT too?

Anyone notice the faces of most of their friends and guests in attendance? Sure, MTV likes show everyone having a good time, but I've seen many a "holy shit, this is just too much" kinds of faces.

My hope is that seeing this has come back to bite the kids in the ass...and that these parents have learned a thing or two. But I doubt it.

These chicks make Ali Hilfiger and Jamie Gleischer look like Mother Teresa.

i was home sick from work today and caught up on a few episodes.

ava= totally manipulative, ridiculous, and utterly annoying
hart= completely a geek with no friends...had to spend tons of money on a party to pretend like he had friends when in reality, no one likes him.
natalie= at the beginning, i kind of liked her, but then i just wanted to smack her. she didn't know 80% of the people at her party...who invites people to their b-days that they don't even know? seriously low self-esteem here...

and what about the losers buying invites to the parties? who are these kids? don't they have anything else to do????

AznSAE 02-17-2005 08:10 PM

yeah i caught the natalie one (as well as the rest). i would love to have mommy and daddy spend butt loads of money on an event for me :p.

mtv shoud do a "my 21st birthday party" show. this would be awesome to watch. hmm, they better give me some money for this idea.

Ava has got the be the BIGGEST SNOT . That red dress she wanted was totally inappropriate for a 16 year old IMO.

Natalie.. Umm Yeah... "I don't know 80% of the people here, yeah...to me that says LOSER.

Hart, WHINY baby... I don't feel good cause I drank too much red bull ??

I hope they all watch their episodes in a few years and realize how horrible they seem.
