A question for the Pretty Boys from a Pretty Girl.....

I posted this in the APhiA forum, and thought I'd ask you guys, too! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Ok, this is about these scantily clad women in these videos (and everywhere else). Ok, me and my ex were watching TV the other day, and this lady said that she felt that men were immature the way that they have these women dressed in these videos. My ex got offended and said that women need to understand that that is what men want to see. Ok, I understand that sex sells. I also understand that men like to look at these women dressed like this. I bear no double standards. The D'Angelo video was sexy as hell. However, I wouldn't want to see men like this in every video.

My question is this: What else do men find physically attractive/sexy about a woman besides her being half naked?

Is it the presentation? Like the Bilal video for Soul Sista. I think that's a sexy video that was done much more tastefully than these boody bouncing videos.

Tell me what yall think!!

MIDWESTDIVA 12-26-2000 09:03 PM

Good question Ideal08! I am anxiously awaiting responses as well. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

NUPE4LIFE 12-27-2000 09:55 PM

To answer your question, for me it's the eyes. They say that the eyes are the window to a person's soul. I believe in that cliche. Now on to the scantily clad chicks in videos. I love it! I'm being honest. Now some of those videos are down right ridiculous. For example, the Cash Money Millionaires "Project Chick". But for me if it's done in the right it's all good. I hate videos when you know they're using hood rats. I'm not sexy the videos are sexy though. I'm saying that their are a lot of half naked chicks in there that look good. But I have to agree that Bilal's video is sexy. The women in the video are not your typical video chicks. I think that's why I love it.

I have to agree with N4L, the eyes are really sexy to me. As far as videos, I like to see scantily clad women, I can't sit here and say that I don't, but at some point I hope that a vidoe has more than just that.

Most brothers will answer that they like the half naked women. That's probably why I see so many brothers that I know when I hit Strip, ah I mean gentlemens's clubs here in DC. But as far as what I find sexy, I like women who are more naturaly beautiful. Someone who has to spend like hours in front of the mirror, and all that high maintenance, I don't find them all that attractive. Now she might be someone that I want to take to bed (sorry I am just being honest), but as far as her me being attracted to her, naw.

My friends always go for the highly visible, pretty girls that everyone is swett'n. I usually shoot for the classy sista with the natural and nicely toned body. That's what I find sexy.

Thanks, yall!! I appreciate your honesty in answering the question. Skeeeeee-Yo!!

Bobby Earl 01-06-2001 02:08 PM

I am sitting here at work and reading some of the previous topics that have been discussed over the last few months. I ran across this one and I also wanted to respond to Ideal08.

Unfortunately, sex does sell. Now, I grew up listening to Run DMC, Eric B & Rakim, Doug E. Fresh, NWA, 2 Live Crew, Too Short, EPMD, etc... So, I developed an interest in the lyrics and the originality of the beat in the music. However, within the last five to 10 years, videos are all about nakedness. I would be telling a lie if I said that some of those skimpy dressed women don't get my attention. Nevertheless, it is definitely sending the wrong message to viewers. In my opinion, it puts more focus on a black woman's body and not enough focus on her true attributes:
1) mind
2) soul
3) heart
4) love
*5) strength

However, I do think that when most (not all) brothers reach a certain age, we do finally transcend from that one tracked mentality.
It takes some brothers longer than others... 30, 40 or even 50 years old.
The only bad thing is that they we end up hurting so many women before we are mature enough to know and do better.

But those are my thoughts on this topic.

I AGREE!
MR. EARL, ARE YOU SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE?

Bobby Earl 01-08-2001 11:37 AM

Yes,
Unfortunately, I am speaking from experience. Sometimes, experience is the only way people will ever learn.

Bobby Earl 01-08-2001 02:53 PM

I have a question pertaining to this topic?

Do you think that the videos and other stereotypes of black women have an impact on how brothers see and interact with black women?

A lot of the videos and stereotypes emphasize on the physical attributes which might indirectly cause men to only see women for sex. This is what I meant about people getting hurt because one party is focused on longevity, understanding, and getting to know someone while the other is focused on sex. I know it takes more than a video to think this way, but the videos don't help.

I also don't like how the beautiful black women has always been visualized with "light skin", long hair, coke bottle shape, and brown or hazel eyes. By no means am I prejudice against light skinned ladies, but I just feel that there are many darker and less physically inclined sisters who have a lot to offer.

Now that I think ahout it, maybe this behavior is learned at a young age or influenced by the environment in which some men grow up under. I am from Louisiana and I know that a lot of brothers from Southern Louisiana (Lafayette, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Hammond, etc..) have this mentality whether they choose to admit it or not.

Does anyone have some more input?

AKA2D '91 01-08-2001 07:56 PM

Bobby Earl,

AKA2D'91,
I am a little throwed off. What do you mean by "Why Yo People?" Please edumacate me further...

If you are from the boot, you know that most brothers are crazy about those red-bones...and anything less is uncivilized.

AKA2D '91 01-08-2001 08:20 PM

LOL...I EDUMACATE for a living!

where are you from in LA?

Yes, I do know that ESPECIALLY, here in New Orleans, they LOVE those "down the bayou" peeps...

in other words, SERIOUS redbone! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Bobby Earl 01-08-2001 09:00 PM

I am from a very small town called Bastrop (about 15 miles from Monroe). I have only been in the BR for about 2 and half years. I think I first witnessed this epidemic when I went to Northwestern. It's really not that serious when I think about it, but it is a little unfortunate. I have seen some of the most gorgeous creatures known to man and many of them were not red bones.
To each his own; I guess.

Where are you from AKA2D '91? Did you cross in 91? If so, I know a few of your sands from Northeast Lousiana University (Monroe) that crossed in 91.

Bobby Earl 01-08-2001 09:07 PM

AKA2D'01

What does ROFTLMAO and LOL mean?
As I said earlier, I am a little throwed off so I must have been absent on the day the correspondance with the meaning of those two abbreviations was issued out.

Is this something that I should know or is it something I don't need to know?

Help me out educator..

AKA2D '91 01-08-2001 09:28 PM

If you are going to be a REGULAR on THIS or ANY internet chat forum, you need to know this...

ROTFL=rolling on the floor laughing
ROTFLMAO= rolling on the floor laughing my AZZ OFF
LOL=laughing out loud
IMHO= in my honest opinion
JMO= just my opinion

HEY, IT'S 91! NOT 'O1 http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

OH, I GUESS YOU WILL WANT TO KNOW HOW TO ADD THE "SMILIES" NEXT! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif

um, NUPES, help educate your brother, if I have left any out! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I believe I said '91 not '01. I know some AKAs who crossed in '91 that you may or may not know.

Thanks for the legend to this map. I will use it in the future. Why do I need my frat to educate me, when I have you to do that, huh?

Thanks Again...

Bobby Earl 01-08-2001 10:02 PM

Guess what AKA2D '91?

I want to know how to do the smiles...

Thanks in advance...

B.E. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif, in response to your question, I'm not sure how this will affect Black men's interaction with Black women. I do agree, though, that the videos don't help. I think that it's a matter of maturity. At least I would hope that by a certain age, men know what they want in a woman and in a relationship. I think the videos, like the Gentleman Clubs, simply create a fantasy. At a young age, men might chase around these type of women, but as they mature, they realize they want more than just T&A.

I do get a little tired of Black women's beauty being showcased as only light skinned, long hair, and perfect figure. I'm glad that women like Kelly Price, Queen Latifah, and Jill Scott are representing for us big girls! Unfortunately, as far as skin complexion, a lot of people still think that the darker you are the more unnattractive you are. I guess it's all about preferences. I love my chocolate skin, and wouldn't trade it for all the attention in the world. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Now, as far as men looking to women solely for sex, I think that's a given, anyway, regardless of the videos. But then again, I am cynical, biased, and bitter (I can admit that now http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif).

I also share your opinion...

I really don't find it attractive to see half naked women in videos. I think it's very unattractive. I wouldn't mind seeing my own woman half naked or better yet, butt naked in front of me in my apt. where only I can see her. I'm just not into provocative dressing women in public. It's a really big turn off for me. I guess that's why I don't watch those videos. Everyone is different though.

KAPPAtivating 04-20-2007 02:25 PM

I agree^^^! Half naked women in the videos are physically attractive, but to me you must be SEXY. Sexy is in the way a woman moves her body and talks with confidence (for me). I would much rather her walk in a room and be noticed by her walk instead of what she ISN'T wearing!;)

2 Quick questions for u or any of the other guys that want to answer . . . .

1: so, in ur mind what is provocative dress? Since spring & summer's coming up, how do u decipher what is provacative and what is dressing for the weather, 'cause when it's hot I know I definately wear less. :D

2: I was once told buy a guy that women are immediatly put into categories when men meet them is that true ???

I'd like to know the answer to that as well.

I've got another.

3: What is it that you notice about a female when you first see her. Or better yet, what is it that sets her apart from other females that may be in the area around her or are out with her (i.e. a clique of friends)?

black_princess 04-22-2007 07:54 PM

Looks like the "ask a man a question" thread in the Omega forum might be revived here :D but seriously inquiring minds would luuuuve to know the answers to these questions . .. don't be shy gentlemen, u won't be giving up to much info on "the game" ;)

black_princess I should have been the last person to ask this question to, but you asked so here's my answers. What I consider provacative:

1. Showing too much cleavage
2. Mini skirts
3. Daisy Dukes
4. Anklets
5. Tight painted on jeans
6. Come screw me heals (I'll have to explain that)
7. Stilettos
8. A woman who has a big butt and knows it and tries to wear whatever to show it off.

9. Showing her stomach, period. In any way.

There's more, but I pretty much can see them coming a mile away.
I can't speak for all men, but for me, yes I do have categories I put women in. I have three categories.

1. Strictly a friend
2. A slut (someone I don't even want to be around at all)
3. A long term faithful (one man) girlfriend (a classy woman who doesn't have to show body parts to be beautiful)

KAPPAtivating 04-24-2007 12:12 AM

For me, I think too provocative is when your ta-ta's are almost out of the shirt. Also if your skirt is so short that when you sit down we see your underwear (or lack of)....same goes for jeans too! The first thing I notice about a woman is her smile. I get a visual of what pictures would be like if we took them together.:D I have categories as well and they go like this:

1. strictly a friend (who lets me know how to decipher a woman's language)
2. the "meet my family" girl
3. "wouldn't let you meet the family" girl
4. "she might be nasty" girl

I just don't like ankle bracelets. What purpose do they serve? Everyone has their own opinion, but to me it looks rather ghetto.

I'm not saying women who wear them are trashy and ghetto, it just looks that way to me and women who wear them are put into the friend category.

I think it is moreso a thing that was passed along of 'things to look out for' a long time ago, most people don't feel like that about ankle bracelets now, but this is an opinion based thing. I don't care for anklebraclets myself.

One of my really good friends (just friends) thinks like PB in a sense. It dosen't bother any of us, because that is a preference.

If I brought a woman home to meet the parents and they saw the ankle bracelet, that would be bad news, but that's not why I don't like them. It just says something to me about the girl, that's all.

I can understand that. One day when I was around eleven or twelve, I asked my mother if I could get an ankle bracelet and she told me they were for older girls or grown up women or something along those lines.

I just didn't quite realize those thoughts were held. Love GC! You learn something new everyday!:D
