If You Go To/ Went To Miami...

do you get annoyed when people get your school mixed up with the other Miami?

James 01-29-2005 02:07 PM

I get confused with Miami Ohio as a location when people are talking about going to school in Miami.

mu_agd 01-29-2005 04:21 PM

YES!!

MiamiADPi 01-29-2005 04:58 PM

We all know that there is only one true Miami..... and that's Miami, Florida. Go Canes! ;)

I don't understand how people can get them mixed up so much. I'm actually surprised how often I get asked if I go to Miami of Ohio, esp. since I'm a frequent wearer of orange and green. Seems pretty easy to keep 'em straight to me..... U. of Miami - Florida. Miami U. - Ohio.

Oh well.

Yea, exactly. I always end up saying Miami Ohio.

ADPiAkron 01-30-2005 11:52 PM

Miami University in Ohio is located in Oxford, Ohio....so you could always say Miami of Ohio or Miami University in Oxford, Ohio!! Gotta give my support to the Miami of Ohioans.....my sister is a Red Hawk!!

MiamiADPi 01-31-2005 12:27 AM

and ADPi totally took over this thread. lol

The big push lately is "UM" and not "Miami", which it's one syllable shorter, so maybe that's the reason for the big push. lol- But when I first got on GC it totally slipped my mind that there are so many other schools that go by UM, so anytime I'd see UM in a sn, I'd get a bit excited, then realize that we don't have those GLOs here, so they couldn't possibly be talking about U. of Miami, Florida. oh well, I'll have to do more recruiting to get more of our current Greeks on here.

Miami of Ohio is where Beta was founded. I went on a road trip there last year with a few guys to check it out. I know that WV always gets made fun of for being hillbillies and not having teeth and stuff...but I swear in Oxford I saw more rednecks and people without teeth than I ever have in WV.

IowaStatePhiPsi 01-31-2005 08:48 AM

gotta go with Miami University over University of Miami.
The whole Miami Valley is a beautiful place.
Drive along Trenton-Oxford Rd. over to Collinsville and up to Eaton on Hamilton-Eaton Rd. and you pass the farms my family owned after they migrated from the hills of Virginia.
Hike through the woods around there and stop along exposed rock croppings or stream beds and you can find fossilized corals, trilobites and other ancient sea life.

University of Miami- over run with developments and hurricanes.

In Oxford? really? I would agree with you if you said Hamilton or Middletown, but i don't recall ever seeing that in my years at Miami.

Um yea. Unless you didn't go anywhere near the campus and were hanging out at like, Big Lots, there are no rednecks at Miami. I don't think I've ever seen a hillbilly student here.

I really got annoyed with people confusing UM (in Florida) for the one in Ohio... when I would tell people that I go to Miami, they'd automatically assume Ohio, which I found rather strange considering I've lived in South Florida all my life

Maybe, but this overdeveloped city allows me to lay out and get some sun in the middle of winter when back home they're getting 20 inches of snow. For a Northerner campus looks like a resort and with south beach minutes away and Key West within a few hours, who could complain? Gorgeous blue water, seasonable temps all year, amazing tropical animals and wildlife, ah, I love it. :)

Munchkin03 01-31-2005 12:49 PM

Miami was a University before Florida was a state.

I'm just saying.

It's a valid point, though. Miami of Ohio was founded just a few years after Ohio University. O.U. was 1804, I believe Miami was 1808 or maybe 1811 (?).

In any event, both have been around a long time, and it is frustrating to be confused with newer or larger schools (Like Ohio State in our case)

Thanks. I just went to the Miami (Ohio) website and discovered that.

I knew it was around then. Appreciate the correction.

can't forget the abundance of crocodiles :)

When I was a student at OU (the University of Oklahoma, not the University of Ohio ;)) many native Okies thought I hailed from that wide spot on the road in far northeast Oklahoma instead of that vibrant, cosmopolitan city by the sea in Florida!

BTW, the wide spot in the road in Oklahoma is pronounced "My-am-uh"; "My-am-ee" is how the Magic City is pronounced. (Unless you're from Latin America; many pronounce it "Mee-am-ee". :D

Just remember... when you're up to your ass in alligators, it's hard to remember the primary objective was to drain the swamp! :D

ok this is kinda off topic.. but what about the other schools in miami

namely FIU...

I cant tell you how many times people ask.. ohh so you live in miami??? oh so you must go to UM... grrr NOOO i live in MIAMI and i go to FIU

anyways i had a professor once who said.. UM is the university who doesnt know what city it is in.. he said they should rename it the University of Coral Gables....LOL i laughed when i heard this but when i told my boyfriend i got an earful..

for the record...i have nothing against UM... my boyfriend is an alum

regardless walking on the campus of FIU is sad at times cause more people wear UM gear than FIU gear... there was a funny pic and article in our student newspaper ... here i hope these links work

Thanks, but FYI, it's Ohio University. Remarkably enough, that's why we know it as O.U.

Just yanking your chain since, as you know, I have a close relative at "that other O.U." The younger one.
