Snapping instead of clapping
Cool or not?
Please discuss. |
So cool that you have to combine it with hissing.

I snap almost automatically now.
I've decided it's one of the least cool things I do. |
Whoopie Cushions
Snapping vs. clapping? The cool thing to do is neither. Get everyone in your group to bring whoopie cushions to events. When something worthy of mass approval occurs, everyone sits on their whoopie cushions.

Snapping now drives me crazy...

But seriously... we clap. We've had guests act surprised when we clap them into meetings. They tell us that other chapters either clap ONCE or snap. But I'll admit, I do snap sometimes. (Only if I don't have a free hand.) |
We clapped and I'd always be the smartass in the back of the room snapping at meetings...it a few girls started doing it to be smartasses as well but it never caught on, thank goodness.
|
I know my chapter snaps and I think some of the other sororities on my campus do also (correct me if am wrong buttonz.) I personally think its nice and we always do it during a chapter or events if someone has a great idea or says something really funny. Its just easier to do since it only requires one hand. But there are always 1 or 2 sisters that just can't snap for the life of them.

Snapping? Sounds kind of "In Living Color"/"Men on Film" to me.
But what do I know -- I've got a musical background, and musicians stomp instead of clapping. |
hmmmm i don't know about snapping... it just seems a little too "legally blond" for me ....
|
We snap, mostly just because clapping is too loud. However, other chapters do "quote marks" which is the finger motion you do when you air quote something.......puts the whole snapping thing into perspective in my mind, at least we're not just waving our fingers in the air:)
either way i've always felt weird snapping... |
It is so much quieter to snap than clap. if you agree and start clapping, the person has to stop speaking. I hate the snap, but it is more efficient at 2am and you just want to be done chapter.

My undergrad chapter has been snapping since we were installed 3 years ago. Its what our national consultants taught us to do. However, when I have talked to other chapters they do not snap. So I guess its preference.
:) |
The only time I've seen people snap instead of clap was in an informal setting, such as camp or something else, where the speaker/whomever was in charge wanted to group to be more laid back and silly.
I didn't know people did this in a formal setting. |

My chapter has snapped since I was initiated back in 1996 and I'm sure before that time they did as well. They still snap and I encourage it because it is more uniform and polite when you have over 250 members in a chapter.
|
I always thought our campus' chapter of Kappa Delta did the "quote" or "ditto" motions bc their local mascot is Woodstock (you know.. the little yellow bird from Peanuts.) Maybe I'm not thinking about the right motion though. They do their fingers and they move their arms back and forth.
Our chapter use to both clap and snap. When we had speakers or were at an event we would clap, but other times we would snap, like in a meeting or something. I guess bc we always did, I dont find it wierd. |
My chapter snapped (a little) during chapter or informal meetings that were members-only, which, as others have said, makes sense if you're in a hurry to get things over with and don't want to interrupt. But I can't imagine doing it in public.
|
We snap. I agree it is alot quieter when you have 50+ women in a room. Kappa Phi has always just clapped, although I find myself accidentally snapping in there all the time. :)
|
I never heard of snapping instead of clapping.
|
I HATED the whole snapping thing before I joined KD. Another sorority had a good number of members in another group I was involved in, and they would ALWAYS snap, even if everyday conversation. THAT was annoying.
It meeting, if you're following Robert's Rules of Order, only one person can speak at a time. We used snaps to place emphasis on stuff- like if someone talked about something to raise money or get something cheaper, i'd snap (as treasurer!). It kinda was like an "i agree" or "hell yeah" kinda of thing. We never did it outside of meeting. We'd always clap for guests |
Actually it's funny because my chapter is the only chapter in our region who doesn't snap. When we attend founders day or a training conference with other chapters, they'll all be snapping we'll be clapping, and the new girls are like "WTF ?!" Then the oldies have to explain, OH yeah, the ohter chapters snap. It's just not something we've ever done for some reason. Maybe we're just the loud, obnoxious chapter. :)
|
We're the only sorority on campus that claps instead of snaps... going through rush, the snapping drove me crazy (but it does make sense why they do). When I got to my chapter and they clapped, I was relieved :) Of course, now being on the other side during rush, I almost wish we snapped during the parties (like when we're showing our video) because the clapping really does drown out other stuff.

We snap, and I think that as a whole, most of Beta Theta Pi's chapters snap.
We've always been told that it dates back to some of the earliest chapters of Beta, those that existed sub-rosa due to anti-fraternity sentiment. Clapping was way too loud and they would have been caught as a fraternity, leading to a number of things - including expulsion from school. I'm not sure that it's entirely true, but it makes sense. I'm also not sure who told me that, but it's something that we learned about very early on. |
I haven't experienced a Beta chapter yet that doesn't snap. My chapter snaps for everything. And there's not much more I can say that's different from what's been posted... it's not as loud... it's different... yada yada yada. It just gets weird when you do it work or in church or whatever. ;)

Like AEPhiSierra said, most of us on campus snap. I can't snap for the life of me though!
|
I like snapping however...
I swear it took several months after graduating to stop snapping automatically when I agreed with something. Fortunately, all of my close friends were in sororities but I would definitely get some weird looks when it would happen in public or with my new co-workers! |

But this makes sence, as it's almost impossible to clap and hold up your tuba at the sane time (especially the BBbb, I can barely hold that thing up and do anything!) |
Snapping is cool if you were the first people to invent it . . . if your previous membrs copied it from another group cause they thought it was cool . . . well that makes it kind of dorky.

As you said, bands (and orchestras) almost always stomp, because they are holding instruments. In my experience, choirs often stomp as well if they are seated rather than standing and are on stage with a band or orchestra. |
My chapter used to snap primarily. I never did though. I can't snap. I've tried since Kindergarten when we sang "if you're happy and you know it"...I was never happy during the snapping round.
so I always clap. Now the chapter is about half and half. But we rarely have cause to clap or snap in meetings just at regional or founder's day. |

I'm almost sure we are the only ones that snap (out of the sororities) on our campus. (which makes events interesting) but I do know that a few of the fraternities snap, they tend to do it less than we do though. ;) |
